despite some concerns raised by the trailer/marketing, i am still excited for the wish movie. a lot of that has to do with king magnifico.

that being said, i approach it from a different direction than a lot of other people excited for a “classic disney villain.”

first of all, yes. i, too, love the camp and melodrama of classic disney villains. i love that they express their wishes through big bombastic musical numbers, and said musical numbers are often the best in their movies. i like how queer-coded and fun they often are. i like the sass, the drama, the energy.

where i disagree with a lot of people is with this notion that disney movies “don’t have villains” anymore. i don’t think the likes of hans (frozen) and tamatoa (moana) are less evil than "classic" villains - they’re plenty willing to kill with a smile on their face.

i think what people ACTUALLY miss is the big performance around it all. the aesthetic. someone who does these things while being a major character (so not tamatoa) and deliciously, obviously evil while having fun with it the whole time (so not hans). i think it’s that specific combination people are missing. we still have villains, they’re just either not as “fun” or not as “important.”

of course, that take is less punchy than saying disney doesn’t have villains because "steven cringeyverse destroyed western animation and now companies are too scared to make real villains >:( !1!!!"

yeah i never understood where that came from. if anything, redeeming villains is more controversial than killing them. especially in america, being punitive is the norm. forgiveness is cringe. yet so many act as if there was some big consumer and/or corporate pushback against the idea of villains…? at some point?? i guess????

someone must've forgotten to tell that to disney tv animation, where you’ll find everything from bill cipher to belos in the modern era. (also, other companies exist? dreamworks is not some indie studio, they’re fully willing to have big, campy villains.)

but yknow, people like to feel like underdogs. they like to feel like they're somehow oppressed because some animated media don't have classic villains anymore... despite there still being plenty around. you can’t just like villains, you have to make it everyone else’s problem. like disney is obliged to do the same character tropes in every movie. or villains are "dead."

what actually happened is just… some writers at disney decided they wanted to do different things. that’s it. so you now have a handful of movies where the villain is either a minor character, or nonexistent.

it’s not a conspiracy, it’s not a concerted effort to destroy villains. it’s, at most, a trend. because some writers wanted to push against the previous status quo. and now other writers who grew up with that want to have more classic villains, because that’s what they see as exciting and new. it’s just a cycle of trends and countertrends.

anyway. long tangent aside, i’m actually very excited for king magnifico. in part for a classic villain performance (he gets a song!!) - but also, it sounds like he might scratch a particular itch of mine.

which is to have a big, dramatic, irredeemable villain… who is still a human and has an understandable pov.

yes, you can combine these things. it’s not common for disney, but a lot of what we consider “great movie villains” throughout history have been this exact combination. they have to be defeated, they refuse redemption, they are 100% committed to their goals and will not budge - but they also GENUINELY BELIEVE in those goals.

what i’m really asking for here is a sincerely motivated character. someone who is a villain, but doesn’t SEE himself as a villain. someone who isn’t lying when they try to endear themselves to the hero or promise to make the world better if they join forces. it’s just that they are completely misguided about what would be good for the world, and nothing will persuade them.

whether someone is a villain, a hero, or anywhere in between, i think asking a character’s motivation - and playing those motivations straight, rather than just as a mask for plain selfishness - is key.

as i’m saying this, you might notice that it’s not actually too far off from what i like in other characters. jasper in SU is basically this in her "main arc” in season three. she refuses help, she’s a huge dick to everyone… but she also 100% believes in homeworld as an institution and is actually, genuinely selfless. even if it means her own corruption, she refuses help, because that would betray her cause. which she values above her own life. and by rebecca sugar’s own words, jasper doesn’t even believe she deserves help.

the common thread here is really tragedy. someone you can root for and against at the same time.

so how does this relate to king magnifico? well, jennifer lee (writer for this movie & also the frozen movies) just had an interview where she talked a lot about wish, and in specific, having a classic disney villain in magnifico.

she illustrates a lot of what i’ve been talking about - that there is no grand conspiracy at disney against villains. they just had different stories they wanted to tell. there was no mandate either for or against villains, not in this movie or any other. they just did what they wanted to do with those stories. (btw, that’s not me saying there isn’t pressure at disney to tell certain stories and not others. it’s just that the concept of a villain isn’t as important to the corporate side as, say, not making elsa gay.)

anyway. what makes the king magnifico portion interesting is how lee talks about exactly what i’ve been saying. they knew they wanted a classic disney villain, but it sounds like they still want him to be different from other such characters. namely, they wanted to find the benevolent side of him, how he genuinely believes what he believes and DOES want what he thinks is best for the city of rosas.

and the plot totally checks out - basically, he decides whose wishes come true. and that’s really interesting, because a wish can be anything, good or bad. it sounds like he really wants to prevent what he sees as bad wishes from coming true, and is too conservative in what he allows or not. and his way of being kind about rejection is to remove those wishes from people’s hearts if he cannot fulfill them.

that’s SUCH a great concept for a villain. it speaks to issues of control, of agency, of being in the paternalistic position of deciding what is “best” for everyone else. it gives me a little bit the wizard of oz (as in the wizard himself, who is a charlatan trying to maintain a pleasant status quo, even if it’s a lie), and a little bit white diamond (controlling the lives of others, but genuinely believing you are being selfless and heroic about it / steering people on the “right” path).

reading that interview, my excitement for this movie went from like a 2/10 to a 8/10. jennifer lee seems to have a real interest in creating characters, not just stock tropes. elsa is one of the best disney princesses (fight me) for exactly the same reason.

another great concept talked about here (which you also see in lee’s frozen, with anna and elsa as opposites) is that of duality. there’s a lot of talk about magnifico and asha being two sides of the same coin, both initially believing in this system and wanting what’s best for the city. and from there, they divert to their opposite paths in what specifically they think is right. the interview talks about them as if they were this thesis and antithesis about what’s right for the city, needing to reach a synthesis. in talking about this concept, they included this illustration:

notice the similar poses. both have their hands behind their back (commonly used to convey a character is hiding something), their feet pointed out, and give the world a pleasant smile. asha has a darker color palette in a world of light, magnifico is a ray of light in a dark space. it's interesting for its duality.

so yeah. all in all, i’m still excited for wish. i want to take alan tudyk goat out back and shoot it for a quick, humane death… but failing that, i’ll just pray his role was hammed up for the trailer. please tell me it’s not that insufferable. please.

because i do really like everything else i’ve heard about this movie!! i like that asha is described as this idealist with “dumb courage”, like maybe she’ll actually have some character flaws and need to learn?? (maybe? hopefully?) i like everything i just said about king magnifico. i like that we have this blend of 2d and 3d animation, that’s such a clever concept for a “100 years of disney” celebration.

so yeah. i will be watching. never have i ever prayed for chris pine to save a movie, but today might just be the day!

now what do you get when you cross the most reliable, unkillable dual sport of all time with a diesel engine? you get the Kawasaki KLR-650 HDT, the M1030-M1, a finicky monster used by the US military. perfect for the unkillable Miss Militia, a connoisseur of finicky military equipment. it can go anywhere and use anything for fuel, but it was literally designed to run on jet fuel.

Velocity’s a speedster right? so obviously he’s gonna get an ultra fast liter bike, super sport, 200hp, etc. WRONG. you fucking idiot. you fucking moron. personally i don’t subscribe to grimdumb f(c?)anon that he perceives real time when he’s speeding. that’s stupid cape design imo. he can go fast as his heart desires with his power. yknow what he can’t do with his power? rip up the fucking motorcross track, doing flips and jumps and shit. radical, man. so he gets a two-stoke ripper, the Yamaha YZ-250.

Battery, on the other hand, is a girlboss who needs to get stress relief via a supersport liter bike. she’s dealing with assault all day, can you blame her? so she’s getting the Honda CBR1000RR-Fireblade. liquid cooled, 999cc, inline four, with a top speed of 190mph it really doesn’t get much faster than this, folks.

now if you take the dual sport Kawasaki, give it the suspension of the Yamaha motorcross, but the tires and street performance of the supersport, you get the Supermotard class of bikes. the crackhead hooligans of the bike community, these are the bikes that are doing wheelies in residential areas, jumping over that grassy hill near your office building, and squealing around corners as the back end slips out. can you tell i have a favorite type of bike. now, who’s our resident crackhead of the protectorate? why, Assault, of course! So he’s getting the king of supermotos (and the bike i will probably be purchasing in may), a Suzuki DRZ-400SM

loud, annoying, and entitled Triumph gets the Harley Davidson Softtail, the bike of choice for obnoxious wannabe hell’s angels, the bike of choice for your balding 50yr old dad, or for the kid who wants so badly to be relevant and accepted amongst the boomers he calls friends. idk where Triumph fits into this its kinda just a vibe yk he’s a nepo baby, he gets a harley

and finally. the perfect bike for those with mobility issues/those concerned about safety due to preexisting medical conditions, Director Piggot gets a Harley Davidson Trike and she fucking slays on it, understand? girl power.

Isagi didn't expect to catch feelings for you because he only ever thought of you as his best friend since early childhood, but it really shouldn't have been surprised when he started getting butterflies in his stomach every time he saw you. It took him quite a while to confess his feelings because he didn't think you'd feel the same way. But when you won first place in an important competition, Isagi just couldn't hold himself back anymore. He pulled you into a hug like he always does when congratulating you, just this time kissed you as well. At firat, he was very embarrassed about it, but you kissed him back immediately.

Nagi always wondered how you were able to put so much effort into ice skating because it looked so hard. You always offered to teach him and encouraged him to find another hobby besides gaming, but he never bothered to actually do that. You were happy to find out he started playing soccer because of Reo and supported him from the first moment he mentioned it. Nagi always came to watch your performances if he had the chance to, so of course you promised to do the same and came to watch all of his soccer matches. It didn't matter to you that he was only part of a school team, you always knew how much potential is hidden inside of him. The invitation to Blue Lock only proves you right.

Fyer and Falbi from twilight princess!! how good of clowns are they?

I already reviewed Fyer for a prior ask, but I will add that sad clowns are a real trope in circus performances, and can be very fun. I just dont think Fyer is putting on an act, I think he's just depressed.

Falbi: So like on a basic level he falls to many of the same trappings as other characters I've been told to review. He is a clown costume just to stir up business. However he is implied to have worked in the circus with Fyer, so it is completely possible he's earned his uniform even if its being used for evil.

Yknow, he has the energy, he's cheerful he's vibing. I do feel he is putting in the effort even if he is not doing an actual clown show.

However.

He is really really scary. I see this man and I want to go home. He has the potential to be a real solid clown in theory but in practise I'm SCARED AND I miss my MOMMY.

Hesitant 5/10

you all enjoyed that other bullet fic-esque post i made so i have another one

wild west aziraphale and crowley:

crowley is drunk in a saloon when aziraphale arrives

the moment he walks through the doors, everyone just hears a slurred "AaNGeEL!" from across the room

aziraphale, startled and a bit concerned, advises that maybe crowley should sober up

"nahhh this is the whole fun 'round here 'ngel. watch."

and then he does some dumb shit that gets him into a fight with some big name cowboy

but through some impressive lying and fanangling and overly implying crowley says things that he doesn't

aziraphale ends up taking crowley's place for a duel

(that actually makes the bullet catch a bit funnier, actually. second time aziraphale's being shot at like this)

here's the kicker, though:

aziraphale doesn't want to SHOOT a man??? are you MAD?! hes an ANGEL for hell's sake

he's not going to endanger a human!

crowley sobers up enough to attempt to make a plan with aziraphale

in the end, aziraphale tells crowley that he's just going to miss on purpose!

and then do a miracle so he doesn't get hit, himself.

a draw! that's easy enough

"are you sure you can do a miracle while shooting a gun? takes a lot of focus for both, yknow"

"im quite aware of my own capabilities, thank you."

during the duel, things don't go exactly as planned

aziraphale, ever the angel, is going to follow the rules. 10 paces. then turn and shoot.

this cowboy does not give a fuck and he turns on pace 5 and shoots

crowley's "AZIRAPHALE!" rings through the crowd as aziraphale gets hit in the back

he runs and all but slides to the ground next to aziraphale

the cowboy loads his gun again but crowley gives one SNAP in his direction and he's GONE.

he turns into a cactus, he disappears, he literally dies, i don't know but he's OUT OF THE PICTURE

aziraphale isn't even hurt, actually, he's just shocked

"but... that's not fair!! that's cheating!"

crowley moves to miracle the wound but aziraphale stops him

there are humans watching. he can't just be healed immediately!! that would draw far too much attention, which they really don't need right now

crowley rolls his eyes, but gets another idea

cut to aziraphale playing dead in crowley's arms

crowley gives a very exaggerated "WELL! MY FRIEND IS DEAD! I MUST TAKE HIM TO THE BURIAL GROUNDS! CIAO!"

they get to a more hidden area. an abandoned building perhaps.

"outstanding performance, angel. five stars."

"yes, yes, now put me down. this is utterly humiliating."

"i dunno, angel, i think this is a good look for you."

"crowley."

he puts aziraphale down and aziraphale moves to miracle the wound

but the wound has already been fixed. as has the hole the bullet made in his coat.

he gives crowley a pleasantly surprised look

before he can give any compliments or praises though

crowley cuts him off with "i think i need a drink. you coming, angel?"

random late night thoughts on my famous jimmy junior concept (specifically w/ tinimmy)

jimmy jr moved away in his sophmore year of high school because his mom got him accepted into a really good and well respected performing arts school in california. mom moved to california to live with him while he auditioned and studied and dad stayed behind with andy and ollie (they both missed their mom and jimmy jr SOO MUCH but they'd get to visit during the summer and spring/winter breaks)

tina and jimmy jr continued on again off again dating thru 8th 9th and 10th grades but they were always friends so tina took it super hard when jimmy jr moved away </3 she dated a few guys after him but honestly despite being a hopeless romantic she never felt much of a spark. i think she just missed him too much & never got over her first love. she vowed off dating until after high school

she definitely cried everyday for WEEKS when he actually moved away and stopped hanging out with her friend group w/ tammy and jocelyn. she still kept in contact with zeke but he had a pretty busy life at that point too yknow how it is

jimmy jr would call and text with tina and their friend group sometimes but he got really busy w/ school and life so they eventually fell out of contact. the type of middle school friend you only keep up with through their occasional facebook status updates

jimmy jr got his big break and became a famous teenage heartthrob type when he was around 17 years old and he did NOOOT take it well at all lol he got a huge ego and made so many terrible decisions <3 bless his heart <3 maybe he even thought he was too good for seymour's bay or his friends back home even though i think secretly he missed them. basically stopped talking to his family around this time. super weird for everybody who knew him in seymour's bay that he was now famous and totally idolized but he became something of a local legend to their town like "the birthplace of jimmy pesto jr omg" which was probably good for tourism

jimmy pesto's also got more randos visiting his restaurant because they wanted to see where jimmy jr grew up and harass his family basically lmao which jimmy pesto HATED especially since he became estranged from jimmy jr

it probably settled down after a few years when everybody realized jimmy pesto doesnt talk to his son and also he's an asshole

tina was always very proud of jimmy jr even as his friend because she knew how important dancing and attention/fame had always been to jimmy jr and his passion for it (she'd known him since kindergarten obviously!!!!) so she was always cheering him on like yay ^_^ she might attend an event he was doing locally but ngl he did stay clear of seymour's bay feeling like he had unfinished business there he didnt want to think about. tina was genuinely just happy for him & mostly over her feelings for him

she DID buy all his merch even the cheesy shirtless posters that were definitely made for 12 year old girls to kiss at night. she's LOYAL OKAY!!!!!!

because jimmy jr never came around to seymour's bay and avoided the area he kind of got a reputation with the locals that he thought he was "too good to acknowledge where he came from" so their opinion of him is slightly negative tbh. which isnt UNTRUE but it was less about the town himself and more about the people he left behind

jimmy jr found it really hard to make genuine friendships at his new school bcuz everybody was always trying to compete with each other and eventually he just stopped trying so he's been very socially isolated for a long time which DIDNT help his mental health. he never had another close friend like tina or zeke it was mostly just random party buddies and one night stands but nobody he could be himself around :(

jimmy pesto's relationship with jimmy jr in this fic is much too complicated to describe in a tumblr post lol but its very. uhh. they both want the best for each other and jimmy pesto truly isn't a horrible dad. andy and ollie adore their big brother though and they'll always ask him about his fancy life in hollywood when they go to visit

when jimmy jr first became famous there was some slight attention from younger fans directed @ andy and ollie who were like ooooh they're like jimmy jr but our age and single/not famous?? boyfriend maybe? a few stalkers but that pretty much died immediately when they realized andy and ollie are actual literal Freaks <- they never realized this is also true of jimmy jr though!!!!

he is bisexual. he never told anybody he's bisexual and nobody knows he's bisexual but he is bisexual of course. there is no universe where that kid is straight sorry

so first thing to note: charlie technically originally possessed the puppet but was removed from it. henry realized that remnant was something that regrew human tissue, and ultimately his work was a bit of a hail mary in terms of if he'd successfully get his daughter back, and he did! of course, in turn, he didn't like... turn william in because of the fact he fucking benefited from those murders and he knew he'd be a damn hypocrite

charlie actually doesnt have many, if any, proper organs. the few that are there are uh- well either multiple exist to perform the same task, are simply accessory, or are missing altogether. It's kind of horrifying, really. she's a facsimile of a human grafted onto a metallic skeleton and in those 5 years she was being "perfected" henry became grossly attached to the idea that he was bringing back his "perfect" daughter and-

yeah thats kinda why he fucking snaps when she's a fucking teenager being a fucking teenager??? its honestly kinda depressing if we're being honest-

but uh- yeah quick lil glimpse into why i think henry and william got along as well as they did lmao

beyond the horror elements, though, you'd really have no clue charlie isnt just... a normal chick yknow? sometimes she moves weirdly but no weirder than if someone were double jointed, and the fact she's decently strong is really just her enjoying working out.

ironically enough charlie doesnt like discover she's not human through some sort of dramatic murder reveal but instead just- michael finds out henry already knew abt where the kids went and Truth Come Out. its kinda silly i wont lie

but yeah there's uh- idk that whole spiel. like there's nothing particularly interesting abt the way i write charlie? she's headstrong, impulsive, more calculative than she lets on, really, a bit rebellious but that cools down as she gets older, really just looking for a good time despite the shit she's had to deal with in her own right, caring but not soft... idk you get it

ive been really trying to think about that hard, since comparing the characters to those in fairytales and ballets tended to skew the story a bit.

and uh... my descriptions wont be the best.. im not the best at explaining things in ballet terms moreso just based on my perception of the art form and what i see in it through my eyes.

also im gonna go off of the concept that ultradanse is almost like a stage performance, a show

the most i can do to describe how it looks is to compare it to my vision for the first encounter with Odile/V1... because of the way i designed his lil costume he has a sort of princely look, and even though hes yknow. out to kill V1 because V1 traversed past his warnings, his dancing with V1 then is much more... poised. it might feel a bit distant, maybe it might even seem like hes unsatisfied doing it, as at the time there is no personal connection with V1, no love nor hatred. its not romantic, hardly so. i dont know if this is a good example, but i was thinking abt Prince Siegfried's dancing in Waltz: Tempo di valse...

once V1 is pretty much responsible for his 2-week notice, i like to think Nightingale/Gabriel starts to match V1's high energy, his grace is kinda going out the window... itd be much more intense. if its a pas de deux hes probably getting his fucking hands all over them like hes about to tear them apart. hes abandoning that princely facade. i feel like though in the second half a pas de deux between them would make them slow their pace. now that both of them are dancing together and able to match intensity, it starts to slow down into something more... romantic? yeah :3 i like to think this, this is where any romantic tension starts

now about how he changes from the gilded nightingale to the nightingale. you see... after their second encounter, Gabriel is convinced hes going to die, after all thats what he was told. once he returns from heaven, he seeks out V1 to ask of one final request. he doesn't want to die lonely, and asks V1 to dance with him until the final hour runs out. V1 has no reason to accept his request, other than something pulling at it do so and the possibility it could take a little bit more blood before he's gone. dancing together, progressively Gabriel becomes weaker and weaker.

i REALLY wanted to keep this secret for a scene i wanted to draw but honeeesttlyyyy i dont think its too bad if i share it. after all, im not sharing V1's feelings here. im sharing Gabriel's :3

my thing abt pas de deuxs is that. i like to find symbolism in the fact that traditionally, the male dancer is supposed to support the ballerina to be able to perform moves she typically wouldnt be able to on her own without someone holding her.

towards the end of their dance, V1 switches positions to hold and uplift Gabriel instead, who has this entire time been in the place of the male dancer. in his approaching final moments V1 lays him down on the ground. he's hardly moving, and V1 holds onto him, finding itself not wanting him to just... disappear.

now im still figuring out HOW i want this to work. but i thought abt V1 in desperation, grasping onto the sides of his helmet and ripping his helmet in half being the symbolic thing that sets him free. the thing about the gilded nightingale, is that the armor is the bird's cage. Gabriel's design in this AU only really has the helmet and no other armor, so it just... makes sense to me. this is what sets him free. how the transformation works though? i am.. still thinking about it. you might need to give me a bit to think about that

- live band [!!!!] as the backing instruments for at least half of, if not most of the concert, gives a different feel to songs youve already heard :)

- because of that theres a lot of rearrangements, & his romeo + juliette solo version which is so beautiful

- (biggest selling point is the live band tbh but its so so good ^^^^)

- also the best door performance is the offsick one (yeah, the bondage one)

- the mystery lover vcr !!! (his indie horror movie) and a very cool dance vcr

- overall very fun & extremely energetic feel with a classic taemin edge !!

- this concert was such a big hit irl that he had to do it again in a bigger venue lol (his one and only public apology, not enough people got to see this concert)

- overall feels very musical-esque ? theatrical ? besides the vcrs, even the performances themselves seem to continue from each other in a sort of plot arch :) (if you care to read that much into it which, you should)

- very cool use of the background screens, feels more integral to the performances, rather than just something as a backdrop. the set design is super cool in general !!

- overall elegant and theatrical feel !! a lot of emotion in this. i go insane over sirius lore once per month

- ^^^ the incline !!!!! (emphasis) its very cool and steep, a lot of time he's on it he has to be held with a bungee, but since hes taemin, uses it to make the dance even cooler :)

- he debuted "identity" and "heaven" here (before they were full versions u know today) !!!!! the identity opening is one of the coolest things ive seen, he has so much power

- the very concert that gave us "taemins media bible" & songs transitioning into each other a lot (plus a taemin+shinee mashup)

- stone heart and back to you VCRs !!!!!! basically bonus music videos :) stone heart got the mv it deserves considering its the best song of all time :)

I think I know why I like Stu but not Ethan, even though they’re the same base character: the corny white boy. Stu is a corny white boy, but he’s funny, yknow? He’s silly and goofy and zany. Ethan is a corny white boy but he’s annoying. He’s a whiny incel bitch boy that looks like Dream. So in conclusion: Stu rules and Ethan drools.

Another difference: Stu is well written. Despite the in-text misogyny and murder his character is treated as three-dimensional. He’s silly, attention seeking, he has issues with empathy, he’s a neglected kid, he’s obsessed with Billy. And these things aren’t just outright told to us in dialogue, they’re in his actions, in background details like the note on the wall from his parents, saying they’re sorry they missed his birthday. And on top of that we get Matthew Lillards performance adding layers to it all.

In contrast with Ethan we get someone who mostly talks about how he’s a virgin and definitely can’t be Ghostface. We don’t really get more than that. We get that he’s jealous of Chad but even that doesn’t feel fully played out. Ethan doesn’t feel like a character to me, he feels like a cardboard cutout of an incel played by a fairly young actor who imo just didn’t bring a lot to the role. But what was he supposed to bring? It’s not like the fucking script did him any favours.

That is sick as hell. Respect the privacy with it cause finding out at the same time is badass. How did you find writing it? Has it been updated constantly? If someone was making a character bible what should they have and what shouldn't they?

Thanks! I wrote it a LONG time ago and it has remained relatively static since, though aging Agnes up from 34 to 38 took a little rejiggering of her timeline. Ultimately, I just tacked it on at the end, and it just meant that she had been a courier for longer than she was originally.

Timelines are probably the biggest help in a document like this; a timeline never has to be explicit but it can be nice to think through the broad strokes of a character's whole life - where they lived and when, what they did where and why, etc. - before arriving where they are at the start of the story. A lot of it will probably never come up, but it helps me keep my story straight (literally) if it does. I wanted Agnes to be someone who's really lived a life, yknow.

I also have a timeline of everything that happens in IKROAH, down to what date every single issue takes place, which has been very handy for me to really put character relationships in perspective and force myself to be aware of how long it takes to get from place to place.

While the specific dates are rarely relevant, one lesson in planning a clear timeline for yourself is that in IKROAH #5, Johnson Nash tells Agnes that she's been missing for three weeks. But if you look at the rate of Agnes's hair growth, since Doc Mitchell shaved her head in order to perform surgery on her, that makes no sense. So either Nash has only considered her "actually" missing for the most recent three weeks, or that radioactive hair dye that Agnes uses has really accelerated her follicles. Ever since then, anyway, I've made sure to really think about little things like that.

"do you really think con, an experienced actor and an adult, would feel bad about izzy dying? especially after getting to explore this character so well, especially after djenks has said he took it well?" well i can't say what con would feel because i don't know the man personally, right, but if i had a chance to explore a character i really like, play him finding his happiness, queerness and place to belong unconditionally, and then found out -- halfway through the shooting, despite my character's death apparently being known to the writers from the very beginning -- that he dies shot by the antagonist who symbolizes everything he hates, not even during a fight or a duel, not even protecting someone he loves, but just because he was the nearest pirate, and his last words are all about inspiring the guy whose lil depressive episode cost him a leg to fucking, hashtag be free and live his truth, while everyone else kinda just stood by and watched and didn't even try to help, i guess because eh, if he dies he dies, then actually yeah, i would think it's a little bit unfair, i suppose. but that's just me of course

I'm still in Act 1 of Baldurs Gate 3 but like. I have a whole ass backstory for my Tiefling (Mephistopheles) Sorceress (draconic bloodline) Layla.

Born in Baldur's Gate.

Was orphaned at an early age. Her mother passed from an illness and her father decided it was too much trouble to keep her around, especially as he was trying to marry this woman he had been cheating on her mother with and she didn't want to be raising another woman's child -- especially bc she was a stuck up bitch who had very low opinions of Layla's mother.

Her maternal grandfather Oberon took her in. I'd like to think he was a dragonborn himself (probably not exactly where she got the draconic ancestry, but sonewhere on her mother's side) but I digress. He was a Bard (College of Lore) and he found her a couple months after her Dad abandoned her. He hadn't been told his daughter Hespera had died -- all he knew was that she wasn't writing back to him and it was really unlike her. So when he came back to the city, he found his son-in-law with another woman on his arm and was informed Layla had been out on the streets since about 3 days after Hespera died.

As such, Layla had been scraping by the best she could, ducking away from law enforcement and the works if she had to steal to live.

After Oberon took her in, she joined up with his traveling performing troupe and began learning how to hone her magic. The older she got and the more she studied, the bigger the star that she became for them.

The troupe really did become her family. She loved everyone, from Granny Constance who always made sure she had warm quilts and sweaters to Richter the Strongman who was never afraid to help her chase away less than savory fanatics of hers. She felt safe and seen with everyone there and always tried to return their kindness to them.

One night, when she was about 22, she went out to a party happening in a village they were resting at, wanting to cut loose a little and enjoy herself. However, when she returned, she found the caravans they traveled in destroyed, items stolen and everyone murdered. From what she could ascertain, it seemed almost everyone had been poisoned -- those who had realized it seemed to have tried to fight back, only to be cut down.

Layla knew whoever had done it had to have had a personal vendetta against someone or everyone in the troupe -- and most likely her grandfather. She knew there would be a target on her back.

She fled back to Baldur's Gate, believing it would be one of the last places anyone would look for her, given her past -- and, with it being a bigger city, she would be harder to find.

She studied in secret, continuing to master over her magic in the hopes that she would one day be able to venture back out and find a way to find whoever took her family from her and avenge them.

A few years down the road, when she was 27, she left to go handle some business for her work and ended up being captured by the Mindflayers and ended up with the tadpole in her head.

Layla is a sassy and fun character, not afraid to appear bold, but does try her best to stay alive and find work arounds to ensure that -- especially because yknow she's a squishy spellcaster. There are times you'll see her make more...questionable choices but don't we all? Deep down, she's just looking for connections like she had in her troupe -- she misses having a family. As such, she's very loyal and trusting to her party and wants what's best for them. Even Lae'zel as much as she has to rein her in.

She's also got a soft spot for kids and tries to help them out -- or make them laugh, though sometimes it doesn't always work ("great news kids, you're going to die out there." "That wasn't how you should have done that." "What? It's a funny joke!")

If you can't tell, she wasn't the comedian of her troupe -- though every now and again she'll get something funny out, though it's mostly her being a smartass. But she primarily did performances with her magic or singing and dancing.

I'm trying to go for Astarion this run but I wouldn't be mad if she got with Wyll, Karlach or possibly Gale.

I want to play her in a campaign some day SO BADLY I love her a lot.

The Tragic Saga of the Goncharov Tie-In Game (1995)

so since everyone has discovered goncharov i get to talk about a personal fascination of mine, which is the wild n wacky tale of the goncharov video game tie in. If youre thinking "what the hell are you talking about, there wasn't a video game tie in" theres a reason for that, bear with me

so the game came out sometime around 1995 (different sources place it at various points between 1994 and 1995), and it was one of the first properties to be licenced by sony for a console. It was originally planned to be a SNES-CD release until that console was cancelled, at which point it was ported to the playstation. if youre wondering why goncharov got a tie in like twenty years after the film released, that's kind of why it's so unheard of. sony was testing the waters with its new hardware to see if there was an older audience for gaming, and a few investors were willing to put some money behind the idea. it was actually pretty well-funded all things considered, with a budget of around $1.1m, and the gameplay was similar to that of goldeneye, which released a couple of years later. it was also fairly sophisticated, featuring branching decision trees and several different endings (I think 4? there isn't a lot of gameplay footage available, but there were at least 4)

unfortunately, development was plagued with problems from the get go. Despite its healthy budget, the studio couldn't convince any of the original cast to return to do voice work. Of course they couldn't, the film was two decades old -- you think harvey keitel was gonna bail on pulp fiction to appear in some experimental video game? of course not. so the dev team went for the next best thing: soundalikes.

the problem is, the soundalike VAs they hired weren't used to doing longform work. don't get me wrong, they did their darndest, but their experience was very much rooted in things like radio commercials and short voiceovers. they hadn't really had to act before. oh, and all but one of them hadn't seen the movie. the anecdote goes that they showed up on day one expecting a couple of days work tops, and much to their shock were handed several dozen pages of script (remember the decision trees? branching dialogue baby) and told they were employed for the next six months. Good for them, I think?

The voice acting really suffered from this. a lot of it feels very stilted, it ruins the immersion. yknow how in elder scrolls oblivion all the voice lines were recorded in alphabetical order? It sounds similar to that (altho personally i think the goncharov voice acting is a bit better lol). the directors and actors really struggled to pull everything together.

the result was that, while the game itself definitely wasn't bad, it was outright innovative in places, critics really couldn't get past the baffling performances, which they near-unanimously agreed made the game a slog. someone suggested the game should be played on mute with goncharov the film playing on a second tv, though went on to say that you wouldn't even finish the game then, because you'd just end up watching the far superior goncharov film instead. The game flopped, causing its global release to be cancelled, and was only ever distributed in the UK, Australia, and Japan.

the game had a brief stint as a cult classic, garnering a small online fandom in the early days on the internet. there is allegedly an italian fan translation out there somewhere, although a copy has never surfaced and it is considered lost media. a couple of people have come forward claiming to have worked on it -- they also claim to have met in the neopets forums of all places. i believe them -- and there are a couple of youtube videos showcasing what appears to be an italian fandub, but without the game files it's not possible to know whether theyre real or edited in post.

so now you know the story of goncharov the movie the game, my favourite game i've never played and probably never will. while it may well have been a missed opportunity, i like to think it paved the way for such classics as enter the matrix, and ratatouille the movie the game, and what would the world be like without them?

it starting with the logo & the curtains opening giving it a theatrical feel, making it the one episode that doesnt start with the theme song. the songs all being so damn catchy???? ask her a question & thats how we'll get her especiallyyyyyyy i had those two stuck in my mind all day at work today THEYRE SO GOOD i love the rhythm and the lyrics are lyric-ing & their vocal performances are AMAZING! i love peepers & sylvias dynamic of them being the straightmen to their respective idiots & how they initially dont want to look like theyre singing but by the end of it they go all out! and the visualllllls theyre so lively and bouncy and fluid & i love the color palette they all have when in the skull ship. i'm the bad guy is also pretty good and all, but i think pretty much every other song outshines it by a long run. OH and i love how the watchdogs have some backup vocals in ask her a question & in we're buddies when hater is all "i swear if you say buddy one more time" and wander says it & hater gets all mad AND the pace gets much faster. and like in general i love how the music in woy actually feels like its part of the story & is affected by the characters. the music is really unique and memorable AND you can immediately attribute it to wander over yonder its like spongebob. lastly ill add that my fair hatey was a really great way to end the "hater loves dominator" arc. bc i feel like the whole thing with hater trying to get doms attention & the goofy loser aspect of his personality getting cranked up to 1000 felt like a bit much at times... not to say that i didnt enjoy that part of s2, just that parts of it could have been better, yknow. so i think this episode was a satisfying way to put an end to that arc. also might just be me but i feel like there wasnt much of a point to giving dom ice powers if she was barely even going to use them. like i can see why they did it but i feel like that new part of her abilities was underutilised. i could be missing something but i feel like if you replaced the scenes where she does use her ice powers with magma powers theyd be functionally the same. but idk. but its ok i love wander over yonder & happy 10 years to it (smiles so much)

They’re bored/it gets hard (Rachel) or they figure it out/complete it (Nico)..they drag each other and Drew into all their projects. It’s ok though because Drew drags them into her schemes. Rachel wants to start a band, Drew wants a business empire, Nico just wants them to accompany him into that dark & suspicious tunnel making weird noises..friendship :)

Drew and Rachel bond over rich kid issues™️ like parents making you do all sorts of classes instead of talking to you. Nico would join them but he actually bullies Hades into the classes and talking to him. He does not relate. He thinks violin practice is cool. He misses tap. He is alas. A nerd

Drew is a secret nerd and really into mythomagic and stuff. Once she joins their campaign and starts like embracing it once she gets no one at camp a. Cares, or b. Is gonna belittle her or her interests or c. Is gonna be weird about her being a girl w these interests

What I’m saying is Drew gets really into cosplay.

Drew woman in stem. She helps run Nicos gaming channel and mods the chat ect. She’s really popular on a sep channel but Nico is sensitive and she’s not. On his chat she bullies back :3

They get up to sitcom shenanigans the second the main characters™️ look away which really complicated when Nico tripped and accidentally became a main character. He’s not happy about it either

What I’m saying is Drew is actively trying to be a main character ™️ in life, Rachel is content with being an minor one but life keeps making her a plot device and Nico is trying so hard not to be a main character but everyone is dumb and he has things to do and that my friends is the comedy of their trio

Drew and Will are exes just because I think it’s funny and yknow Will has a type. Will is internally panicked the entire time Nico & Drew hang out.

Drew works w Will at the infirmary-she’s very good at getting people to relax and listen ect.

Nico “works” at the infirmary he just dropped by to gossip but ends up sorting and cleaning and writing stuff down ect. No official position but he always hustles yknow always has busy hands. 

Rachel does not but she is a gossip and snoop so yeah they gossip five feet from Will every other day on one hand he finds it endearing on the other it drives him insane

Nico gives them 1 on 1 training a lot and it’s def starting to show. They give him lessons too (makeup/hair, art, ect..mostly gossip in the end it’s always them gossiping)
