Glass Onion Spoilers - Foreshadowing and Among Us

I’ve seen a few posts dunking on glass onion for being “cringe” because of the Among Us scene and a few praising it for accurately reflecting the fact that this is all everyone was playing in 2020, but I haven’t seen anyone really talk about how brilliantly Among Us works as a foreshadowing/storytelling device.

On the surface - as the film itself points out! - the game is a neat little parallel of the island: one murderer hidden among us, with the objective being to find them out. But this comparison goes far deeper than the basic premise of the film.

Firstly, Benoit appears as the game’s imposter, and then, it is later revealed, is literally an imposter, arriving on the island uninvited under false pretences - one of the first major twists of the film spelled out to the audience in the opening act. And he isn’t alone - just as two imposters generally work together to deceive the other players, so Benoit and Helen work together to infiltrate the group. BUT, and this is the bit that really drives me wild, the endgame format of Among Us perfectly reflects the endgame of the film. The way to win Among Us isn’t necessarily a case of killing everyone or surviving every round - the way to win is by convincing your fellow players to believe you, and to vote accordingly.

During the trial Andi loses because the imposter - the billionaire impersonating a genius - convinces the other players that she should be voted out; she is as effectively thrown out of the airlock as she is the business, and then literally killed to protect the [fortune of] the “crew.”

But, Andi was not the imposter, and so the game continues.

The imposter kills again, and when Miles confesses to causing the lights to go out, this is another excellent hint - only the imposter can sabotage the lights!

Then, with all the characters assembled much like an “Emergency Meeting,” we reach the climax of the film: Miles burns the napkin evidence, and immediately the ensemble is back to the voting booth as Helen, like her sister, fights for the players’ support in voting out the imposter. Any Among Us player will recognise the infuriating feeling when you literally just saw them vent for the love of god you were all there vote them OFF- and that frustration - of speaking the truth and not being believed - is evident in this scene.

But these players don’t care about the truth; they care about surviving (ie staying rich), and so they will vote off an innocent person to placate the shark. Which is absolutely not how you win the game.

Then, then, the game’s final round: the imposter has lost his tools, is revealed for the useless fraud he is, and it’s when he has nothing left to offer the other players that one more vote is held - the characters literally raise their hands as they pledge their support to Helen, in part to give the appearance of swearing in upon the witness stand, but also in part to give the visual of a literal vote... such as that of an Among Us emergency meeting vote.

And it’s when Miles is finally, rightfully ejected that at last, the game is won.

Among Us is a game of social engineering, of lying and convincing others of your lies to prolong your survival, deception, and the malleability of truth. Presenting this game in the opening of the film is more than a gimmick or scene-setter: it illustrates the social structures at the heart of the story.

TLDR: Among Us foreshadows the film’s premise, but also plot twists, character choices, and significantly the film’s resolution by way of group vote.

in a hilarious turn of events my flatmate didn't even know I use any pronouns....

okay um so how utterly shocked and/or disappointed would you guys be if I told you that the one thing that has finally convinced me to actually check out Starkid's The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals,,,was a video of the musical's closing number filled with literally all of the musical's spoilers + a plot twist and a breakdown that is clearly meant to be experienced um chronologically for it to have the most impact especially considering that it HEAVILY involves the show's two main characters and that said twist HEAVILY relies upon ummmm yea actually having watched the fucking musical properly first-

Thank you! I'm very flattered! I'm also very embarrassed to say I underestimated the interest - I assumed it would be just me and a couple of my friends on here who would want them. I saw that the Gulo Gulo Geeks had to mark the item as currently 'sold out', and if I had to hazard a guess, I'm betting they weren't expecting the sudden influx of orders and couldn't handle all of them at once. Please remember guys this isn't a hugely staffed corporation, this is just a very nice couple with what is probably a small side business who likes geeky things (I found them through their amazing Jurass*c Park patches). And remember, I was quite serious - I have zero involvement in selling these. I bought mine (the 50$ original custom patch option plus 20+ for the extra practice patch and geno's) and I'm done lol! I haven't heard anything from them, so I imagine once they get through the current orders the item will probably go back on sale. I do know they had to custom order some thread colors for this patch, so if they ran out of that it could take a few extra days.

I feel like with the influx of mainstream fan merch, sometimes we forget that custom creators are actually human and not merchandising machines :( Just have a little patience, and pay your artists cause they're probably not charging enough for their time/effort anyway <3

He was on his back and Leo stomped hard on his neck, earning several screams behind her.

Dylan pointedly did not look up, as the hand started to tighten. The demon's skin was ashy and gray, the hand thin and bony, black veins protruding through the cold skin. It wore a loose, turquoise shirt, and a white lab coat that nearly reached the floor.

Shooting a quick glance at Ryan, he had not yet noticed. Dylan didn't want to move, afraid of the demon's nails clawing at their skin. With a quiet hum of Ryan's name and a swift kick at the ground, their friend looked up, shot to his feet, looking terrified of the demon. Dylan didn't blame him, though they had yet to get the pleasure of looking at it.

Reluctantly, Dylan moved their head up, meeting the gaze of what they assumed was supposed to be Leo.

It had the same face, though gray and pale, black stripes slashed over its mouth. It had the same golden eyes, though bloodshot and glowing yellow, and it had the same brown hair tied up behind its head, thin and disheveled.

It opened its mouth, and the skin on its lips stuck together, sewn up like a doll, as it smiled big, lacking teeth.

This was an easy contender for one of the worst days of their life.

The rotting wood creaked under his feet, mold and moss lining the cracks in black wood. Red waves crashed harmlessly against the poles. Through murky water, he could see arms floating.

If Dylan were here, they wouldn't have hesitated to go into the water. They'd have already found Elliot by now. Lucas would've been out ages ago. That was why they were taken away, they were too determined to find Elliot. Ryan wasn't determined enough.

If he didn't find Elliot, he wouldn't get Dylan back, and if he didn't get Dylan back, he'd be stuck here forever. With that thought in mind, he took a deep breath, willed himself to move, and stood right on the edge of the docks, and tilted ever so slightly forwards.

He plunged into the water, in what felt familiar. The water, this time, was red instead of murky blue, and when he was pushed into the lake at the fair, there wasn't a hand around his wrist, pulling him down. This time, there was, and he had screamed at the realization. Bloody water entered his lungs, tasting distinctly like iron, getting colder and darker the further they went.

He latched onto the pole holding the docks, digging his fingers into moss, reaching up for the surface. A hand grabbed onto his, pulling him out of freezing water. Jaxon held him close, shouting at a group of kids, frantically apologizing. Ryan didn't do much but shake, huddled against the safe figure of his friend.

Jaxon wasn't there this time. No one was there. He did not know whose arm was dragging him so deep underwater

#work's been so busy because its the beginning of the month #mum's going crazy because my family from śląsk are visiting us today and they're staying overnight #I didn't send my pc for repairs but instead i left it woth our it guy and it's supposedly working now so i picked it up yesterday but #he didnt give me back my power cord so i couldn't even check if it's working or not #and im going to my coworker's bbq this afternoon so very busy week for me #and through all of that all I'll be thinking about is the new drong like????? #BOY #asks
