Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: 心宅猎人/Psych-Hunter.

Psych-Hunter is a 2020 drama about a hot young amnesiac who, accompanied by a rich psychiatrist with major daddy issues and a rich girl who cosplays as a cop, uses his Inception-style psychic powers to solve crimes that are part of a shadowy conspiracy orchestrated by a mysterious figure.

True story: Once I couldn't remember the English name of the drama, so I called it "House Haunters," and now my brain insists that's the real English title. If only!

Do not, under any circumstances, labor under the impression that this show is good. It's not. It's incoherent. The writing is bad. The villain is absurd. The vibe is comically melodramatic. People make inexplicable and out-of-character decisions all the time. Countless complex mysteries get set up with no way to resolve them. There's a thin lampshade hanging over it that blurs the line between bad decisions made on accident and bad decisions made on purpose, but the net result is largely the same. This is the show that first inspired my wife to declare something dumb as a guinea pig in a roller skate.

But it's fun. It's a sea of colorful chaos with brilliant pieces that shine through like strange gems. It knows how to work an atmosphere and does so to create some legitimately creepy moments. It spins a wild yarn filled with bizarre and loveable characters. And it has some twists that truly have to be seen to be believed. In the mood for some beautiful nonsense? Here's five reasons that despite everything I warned you about in the previous paragraph, I think this one's worth watching.

1. Psychonauts for Jazz Age homosexuals

Honestly, that phrase alone should let you know if this is the thing for you. But just in case, let me explain the basic premise of the show:

Jiang Shuo, a man who has lost his memory and been adopted by circus folk, is capable of jingling his keys and diving full-body into someone else's subconscious, represented by lovely and thematic dreamscapes. He does this to solve crimes. Sometimes he takes along a handsome doctor who seems like he might know more than he's letting on, by literally tying their hands together with a red string.

Also, when they do this, they get gorgeous steampunk magical girl costume changes, complete with the cutest little pony nub you've ever seen.

This show can be stunningly beautiful. It knows how to manifest dream logic eerily well. Most of these cognitions are gorgeous, and many are done with primarily practical effects, like it's a stage play. ...And it's good it relies on that so much, because the CG it has is kinda cheap and terrible! So, yeah.

(Side note for the DMBJ fans: This is directed by the same guy who directed Sand Sea, which I assume is related to how this both is a visual treat and completely falls apart on the back end.)

The reason I'm a bit surprised that this hasn't taken off more among the creative set is what a great piece of worldbuilding this Psych-diving is. These boys (and, once, the girl) get to short-term manifest bodily in someone else's materialized mental state, where the person whose brain they’re in neither controls the experience nor remembers what happened after it’s done. Were you writing weird Arthur/Eames fic a decade ago? I got a new best thing for you. Can you say freaky dream sex? Because I can.

The base premise should be more than enough to get your gears going. Come ready to get weird with it. There's so much potential here, and so much of that potential is incredibly gay and wearing impeccably tailored suits.

2. Your friendly neighborhood circus family

As I mentioned before, Jiang Shuo lucks into the best possible fate that can befall an amnesiac: being picked up by carnies.

The troupe includes Ventriloquist Man, Really Big Dude, One-Eyed Acrobat, Other Acrobat, Cheerful Fat Girl, Boy Who Looks Like A Kid But Is Actually Played By An Adult So I'm Not Exactly Sure How Old The Character Himself Is Supposed To Be, and Silver Fox Circus Dad, who manages the whole crew. They're a ragtag bunch of performers who all live together in this cute little compound in some very nice slums, and sometimes they open the gates to their lavish compound and put on a circus show for all the common people!

Now: You know this is not going to be the wokest, most sensitive portrayal of body differences, because of course it isn't. But damn, it's pretty not-bad. The show treats all the circus members as valuable people worthy of affection, whose (occasionally exasperating) quirks are no more or less exhausting than those of the non-circus weirdos in the rest of the supporting cast.

I was half-expecting them to disappear after the first arc, but no! They’re a constant fixture through the show! They’re mostly there to support the show’s more comedic moments, but some of them get wrapped up in more emotional plotlines as well. And every now and then you get to see them actually do their circus shit, which is great.

I will admit that my fondness for them is related to how much I generally love fictional Freaks — you know, misfits who have banded together because society considers them unacceptably weird, but together their weirdnesses make them strong. When you find them, they’re usually the bad guys (e.g., the Gung-Ho Guns from Trigun, the Scorpion crew from Word of Honor) whose freak statuses make them formidable and occasionally sympathetic antagonists. But not so here! The Psych-Hunter Family Circus is good guy support all the way through to the final episode.

I know "found family" is a term that suffers from overuse, but that's the best way to describe what's happening here -- really, it's a family that's already found itself even before the show starts, and now they all live together as an unconventional collective of astonishingly flexible people. How did they find one another? Doesn't matter! What matters is that they all love and would do anything for their newest member, and they think it's great when he comes home with his attractive rich friends, who often arrive bringing snacks, which is really the best use for rich people, if you think about it.

3. Two hands, one ring

Now, if you've seen the series already, you know the moment I'm talking about. But if you haven't (and, statistically, you haven't), know that what I mean is the relationship between these two losers.

Together, Qin Yiheng and Jiang Shuo form the emotional core of the series. They're both drawn to one another because of mysterious circumstances that have started to align. Jiang Shuo's memory is missing, Qin Yiheng's dad has vanished, and all signs point to those absences as having something to do with one another.

Very early in the show, we see Qin Yiheng pull a "come with me if you want to live" on Jiang Shuo, giving the impression that he knows just what's going on in this crazy city. Except, no, he doesn't. Or does he? No, we're pretty sure he doesn't. Or he does, but he's forgotten what he knows, if he ever even knew it in the first place. Anyway, time to tie their hands together and jump into someone else's brain!

I'd say they're in love, but that's not quite it. Dr. Qin Yiheng, high-class homosexual, is in love with Jiang Shuo to the point where he's about to murder someone (possibly Jiang Shuo himself) out of frustration about it. Jiang Shuo, on the other hand, is much more sticking his fingers in his ears and going LA LA LA YOU CAN'T CATCH ME GAY THOUGHTS while trying get a girlfriend in an effort to pretend that all the shit they get up to together isn't tremendously romantic.

That is, until the scene that leads to the which-hand ring guessing game, at which point the burden of their relationship falls on Jiang Shuo (and the Inception parallels get unignorable) for exactly as long as the show will allow it to, before it freaks out and has to add another girl love interest just to make sure all the homos got no'd.

It's not textually gay, because seriously, have you met Chinese television? But it's pretty gay. Or, rather, I think Liu Dongqin (Qin Yiheng) is playing his character as a dedicated homosexual on purpose, and Hou Minghao (Jiang Shuo) is just ... kinda like that? I mean, everything I’ve seen him in, he gets real dreamy-eyed around strong men who pay close attention to him. Maybe it's just his thing as an actor. I'm not judging.

However, the main cast isn't just the two of them. One of the things that led me to this show was the promise of an OT3. And does it deliver on that promise?

Well ... sorta.

Qin Yiheng, Jiang Shuo, and Yuan Muqing are a pretty standard MFM not-love-triangle trio of Male Bestie, Main Guy, and Girlfriend (respectively). There's about five seconds at the beginning of the series where it looks like Yuan Muqing might be into Qin Yiheng, but no, that evaporates almost instantly and is never spoken of again -- and with it disappears most of their interactions with one another, period. So it's less an OT3, and more a case of bisexual cutiepie Jiang Shuo getting both a boyfriend and a girlfriend in a world where censorship will only let the latter relationship exist textually.

But damn if these boys aren't made for one another. Sure, there's a level of conscious comical queerbaiting to it -- I mean, there's straight-up an "only one bed" moment, so you know the show isn't stumbling into rainbow territory on accident. No matter how sexual or nonsexual or whatever you read it as, though, their dynamic is the spine that holds the story together. Really, it's almost sad how often the relationships are set parallel to one another, because when you do that, it becomes obvious how intense Jiang Shuo's bond with Qin Yiheng is, and how largely lackluster and comphet most of his canon romance with Yuan Muqing is by comparison.

Like so.

sidebar: The Girl

I am not going to go into a full-throated defense of The Girl this time, as I am wont to do, mostly because I think Yuan Muqing is full of potential in concept but so badly executed that there's really no hope for her. Her entire personality is whatever they need her to be in any particular scene. It's just that once in a while, what they need her to be is completely insane -- like, seeing-things-that-aren't-there insane -- and it's so great that it makes me mad! She could have been like this all the time! But noooooo

As it is, she has a perfunctory canonical romance with Jiang Shuo that's about as endgame as anything is capable of being (see point 5), and it actually gets pretty cute when it finally gets to the point where it's not just awkward obligation! But alas, it only does that so late in the series that it's not even worth it getting invested in it.

She is a creation of the show. She has no novel counterpart. Her entire function in the drama is to un-gay the dynamic between the boys. You can tell that she was initially supposed to have a different role -- to be the muscle of this trio -- but the narrative forgets pretty quickly that she's got that skill set, and she regresses to being The Girl. She makes dumb decisions that forward the plot. She gets put into danger whenever it's convenient. She demands Jiang Shuo do manly things for her because that’s what a girl is supposed to do, I guess? And then there are moments where she’s cool and crazy and it’s awesome! But they never last.

So if you are going to watch this, be prepared for the fact that the female lead is badly written to the point of frustration. I feel her actor is doing the absolutely best with what she's got; the problem is that what she's got is pretty crappy. Still, Muqing gets some pretty charming moments here and there, and I think it's worth hanging onto those and imagining the character she could have been, if the writers had cared just a little more, or even at all.

4. Powerfully surreal worldbuilding

I'm not even talking about the way people's psyches are structured according to dream logic -- the "normal" waking world is almost equally bizarre. The story takes place in sort of the real world c. 1930, except that a lot of things are off. For example, Japan and England are real locations, but China kinda isn't -- instead, the show takes place in a Shanghai-like city-state run by this moustachioed generalissimo with a faux Latin American dictator aesthetic. The place has its own flag and government and police force (where all the cops have coordinating surnames) and diplomatic relationships with other countries, so it’s clearly its own thing. But what that thing is? What it’s even called? Look, don’t worry about it. Nobody else is worried, so you shouldn’t be either.

You will, at every point in the series, be wondering if the show is trying to telegraph to you that Something's Not Quite Right Here, or if it's just making weird decisions for the sake of artsy weirdness. But don't worry -- there's absolutely no way to tell the difference between the two! Just roll with it.

There's a weird mix of universe rules happening throughout, where everything is mostly period-appropriate for a while, and then somebody builds a clock with levitating parts, or causes someone else to have very specific memory loss — or, again, swings some coins in front of a person’s face and gains the ability to treat their subconscious like a VR amusement park.

You can sort of reconstruct the evolution of this weirdness: The book has actual factual ghosts in it. Well, that’s fine for books, but TV isn’t allowed to have ghosts. But TV can have people who imagine ghosts, so long as it’s all in their heads. Okay, but you know jumping bodily into those imaginations isn’t actually a thing real people can do, right? Well, then let’s make it scientific. How can that be scientific? I don't know, it’s psychiatry. I don’t think that’s psychiatry. Look, it could be. Well, it’s definitely not psychiatry in 1930s Shanghai, and that’s the set we’re allowed to film on. Okay, what if it weren’t actually Shanghai? What if it weren’t actually 1930? What if all of this were at best a weird approximation of the period that adheres to no rules except the ones we want?

Once you’ve thought that, the sky’s the limit.

The show has a very inconsistent grasp on reality, and I am listing that as a pro instead of a con because I am choosing to embrace it as a deliberate choice rather than assume it’s the result of craven incompetence. There's something to be said, though, for how pervasively inconsistent it is. It'd be one thing if there were just a few plot holes here and there (and there are), but this is more along the lines of: We woke up in a mysterious boat and got taken to an island with a giant sea monster skeleton on the shore! What's that all about? Couldn't say! Was it real? Maybe! Moving on!

Let the number of "it's fine! who knows!" comments I've made throughout this rec indicate how much this is the kind of show you just have to roll with. If you are a nitpicker or someone who is troubled by unexplained nonsense, this is not the thing for you. If you love artistic magical realism and high strangeness, you will eat this up with a spoon.

And the lampshade that hangs over all of this worldbuilding is...

5. THE STUPIDEST POSSIBLE ENDING EVER

Okay, usually I am coy about when I think an ending has problems. I am going to drag this one out front and center: Psych-Hunter has an ending so jaw-droppingly, head-clutchingly stupid that I'm actually listing it as a selling point, because it has to be seen to be believed.

When I first watched it, I suspected the show ran out of time or money or something and just had to slap together the quickest possible ending ever. But no! This is the ending they meant! If you go back to the rest of the series, you can see that this is what they were (kinda) setting up the whole time! They just set it up so poorly and decided to make the twist hit at such a late point that not only is it complete nonsense, it actually renders moot the entire emotional stakes of the show! Absolutely incredible!

Now, as I've said before in other places, I don't begrudge the actual twist itself. I mean, it's stupid on its face, but I think they could have done something with it — if they'd had it happen halfway through the series, when the characters would have had time to adjust to the new knowledge. Instead, they slap it on at the last possible moment, when there's no time to have any reaction to it. It's just jarring and baffling, and then the whole thing's over.

I've seen lots of people say "season 2 when???" Season 2 never, friends. There was never going to be a season 2. The only reason you think this was an even remotely acceptable narrative move was that you were assuming that this would be the midpoint, not the end. You're having the same reaction I did, only I can tell this was always meant to be their spectacular dismount.

(To me, it's clear what happened: They J.J. Abramsed themselves into a cool premise for a mystery with no idea how to solve it, hoping they'd figure it out along the way. When they got to the end and still hadn't figured it out, they simply ... opted out of solving it.)

Now, if you want a normal viewing experience out of this show, watch to the end of the next-to-last episode, close your browser window, and have imagination adventures about how you think all the mysteries should resolve. But you're not going to. You are going to continue on to that last episode, and you are going to realize that nothing I could have said here could possibly have prepared you for this. And somewhere, I am going to feel the urge to cackle wickedly and not even know why. Except I'll know why. We'll both know why.

Look, I know I may have spoiled my pitch somewhat with that last selling point. After all, why would you bother watching a series if you know it has a shit ending?

I refute your objection thus: Knowing it has a shit ending changes the whole game, because it removes the feeling of betrayal that hits upon your discovering that the ending isn’t what you wanted. You know that already now, so there can be no betrayal. The ending goes from being an unpleasant surprise to being exactly the unexpected thing that you expected. With that in mind, you can dive right in (ha ha) knowing that you’ll never get the closure you crave, and therefore whatever you make up along the way is perfectly valid.

This is obviously a turnoff if you prefer shows that are like seeing someone start a magic trick, perform it without breaking a sweat, and walk off calmly, leaving you wondering how on earth they accomplished such an amazing thing. Think of this more as someone starting a magic trick, accidentally letting the rabbit fall out of their hat, saying “I meant to do that!” like thirty times, and suddenly vanishing through a trapdoor, leaving you wondering what the trick was even supposed to be in the first place — but they were really good-looking and well-dressed, so at least whatever they were doing was nice to look at while it was happening.

See? They're having fun.

Ranboo x Insomniac Reader (no pronouns used) (ANONBOO REVEAL LOL)

AN: FIRST HEADCANON FIC THING LET'S GOOOO :D Again, this is my first time writing for Tumblr so please don't judge me if it's awful-

Ranboo x insomniac reader/reader who just has a hard time sleeping in general

-so first off when he found out he looked it up. first thing. he's mainly just looking for ways he can help even though he can't be with you all the time.

-he also makes sure to let you know that he's willing to stay up with you and chat or just be awake. he will text you, call you, FaceTime you, whatever you feel up to. he tries his hardest to let you know he's not burdened at all by doing so

-sleepovers. he's definitely gonna come over sometimes if you really can't sleep, and sometimes it even ends up turning into a chill stream night (again, only if you felt up to it). if not, there's other ways he'll try and distract you. dad jokes being his number one go-to because this is Ranboo

-be ready for a ton of snacks. mostly just candy and chips, maybe an uncaffeinated pop. he will be ready to spoil you.

-on that note, he will also give you his youtooz plushies 1000%.

-thinks you're really cute just sitting there hugging them as you watch the show you've picked together.

-really all-around sweet. probably has to get used to figuring out what to do

-but once he knows what works for you he'll do his absolute best to make sure you can at least get a little bit of sleep.

To Sir, With Love by writergirl8 is one of my personal favorites. it's not super percabeth-centric, more so on the OC and Percy's student-teacher bond, but it's just such a lovely portrayal of Percy, and I remember getting really emotional the first time I ever read it :")

Eighteen Years a Hero by romanitas on ffnet is a really sweet love-letter to Annabeth; it's her birthday, and the camp (and Percy!) celebrates her. honestly, a lot of romanitas's works are really great: they explore the anger post-Tartarus, the post-trauma of percabeth's experiences. and this just in: they have an AO3 page with even more stuff!

Earthshaker by skyekingsleigh is a super interesting concept done well in ~700 words: what if Hera had taken Annabeth instead?

ok this is also all assuming you’ve read my internet wife’s Old Kingdom Percabeth AU which melted my brain even though I haven’t read the Old Kingdom! It is so good! her prose makes me insane! as per mf usual !!!

Whispers in The Dark

Summary:

Even a few days after the battle in Starlight City, Whisper can’t keep her mind off of its events and how they might continue to affect her long afterwards. So she decided to leave the Sky Patrol for a bit and get some fresh air back in Spiral Hill. This plan seems to be going well for her in terms of alleviating her stress - that is, until she’s confronted by a familiar, yet unknown person, who seems to know what Whisper’s been through. Whether or not the person liked the outcome of Whisper’s version of events, however, is a beast onto its own.

So I??? Wrote a whole fic in a single day??? Like it's 2020 all over again??? And like yeah it was basically In A Day because last night as I was going to bed was when the idea for this story came to me - then it immediately begged me to write it this morning, and then I was already planning to have our beta reader over so yeah. I'm honestly as shocked as you probably are.

It had been a couple of days since the fight that had occurred in Starlight City, right in front of the now destroyed Doctor Clysdale’s Wisp Care Clinic. Despite that, however, Whisper’s mind felt like it had been frozen in time, still standing in front of that awful clinic, ready to fight to get her wisps back.

But she never did.

The other Freedom Trainees and the Freedom Fighters that had been there with her that morning were able to verify through witness that her wisps had fortunately not been crushed when the clinic was destroyed. But they were still in the hands of those alien scum.

From the information given to them by Knuckles and Amy, Whisper gleaned some sort of understanding as to just how dangerous the person she had briefly known as “Doctor Ezrieal Clysdale” really was, and with it, she had come to an understanding that she would have no success in trying to retrieve her wisps on her own. The Freedom Fighters were trying their best to track down the Black Arms, but wherever it was that they were hiding now, it was quite hard to find.

On this particular October morning, it had all just become too much for Whisper. She wanted so badly to step away from it all and have a day where she didn’t have to be constantly thinking about these things.

“Being here on the Sky Patrol probably doesn’t help things much.” Lux figured.

“Yeah. I mean, I feel so honored to be waking up each morning in this place with all the people I admire, but I get how the same couldn’t really be said for you.” Tangle added. Jewel gave Tangle a bit of a stink eye for the way that she worded her point, which Whisper noticed.

“I get it, I really do… You dreamed of this for so long… And I wanna have that mindset too… It’s just… The wisps…” Whisper replied, lying down on the bed of the room the Freedom Trainees had congregated in - maybe it was Jewel’s? Or maybe it was Amy’s? Whisper honestly couldn’t remember, with everything else going on in her head and all.

“Well yeah, of course, but what we went through back there was rather traumatic, especially for you.” Jewel pointed out, to which the others agreed to.

“And that shit sticks to you like a wad of gum on the bottom side of your shoe.” Amy remarked.

“Trust me, I’ve done this song and dance before… Well, not exactly one to one, but you get what I mean…” Whisper assured.

“Well if that’s the case, what do ya usually do when life hits ya like a semi truck?” Lux inquired in between sips of a can of wild cherry Chaos Cola.

“Something that you don’t need the wisps with you to do.” Jewel added softly.

“Well… I usually go out for a walk and listen to the songs I have on my MP3 player…” Whisper answered, sitting back upwards.

“No way! That’s what I do when life gets me down too!” Tangle exclaimed loudly.

“I know you do, you’ve told me so quite a few times over the two years we’ve known each other…” Whisper remarked with a soft loving smile.

“I’d say that’s a pretty good idea, actually! You’d be able to step out of the Sky Patrol, which could be symbolic of you stepping out of the situation, and you could just be alone with your music instead of having to overhear us constantly remind you of what happened as we try to find the Black Arms!” Amy said, getting up from the chair she had been sitting in. “I’ll ask Sally to drop you off somewhere for a bit and when you’re ready to come back you can give one of us a call!” She continued as she made her way to the door.

“Can it be Spiral Hill? I’m the most familiar with being there…” Whisper interjected just as Amy was about to leave.

“Oh, of course!” Amy replied.

Whisper could immediately feel a bit of relief as she stepped off of the Sky Patrol and stepped into the streets of Spiral Hill. It felt nice to be back home, even for a little bit. It felt like a proper conclusion to the conflict in a sense. But she knew how she could make herself feel even better.

There was a time before she had her wisps that she had gone through an event of turmoil. In fact, Whisper’s life had always had something negative going on in it, like she had been cursed from birth. But things used to not be so grand.

The first time Whisper ever went through something upsetting was rather trivial in fact, especially compared to what the future had in store for her. Back before the Robotnik Empire had nearly the amount of power that it came to have, back when Whisper was still in public school, she had been a victim of bullying. She was singled out as a mobian in a school mostly populated by humans. It made her feel isolated and alone, and made her not want to go to school anymore. So of course, she told her parents, since this was also while her parents were still around.

Specifically, she had told her dad when he had picked her up from school one day. Of course, her dad was saddened to hear that his merely six year old daughter was being made fun of so badly.

“You know, I heard this song recently on the radio and thought it was pretty good, so I found it online and downloaded it. I think it might speak to you.”

He had said to her as he connected his MP3 player to the car’s radio, he was good at technology like that. At first Whisper thought it’d be silly to think that a song could be the answer to her problems, but as the song played on as he drove them home, it inspired her. From that moment onward she no longer cared about what other people had to say about her, only worrying about doing her best at life. Of course, it’s hard to do her best when only a few weeks after that moment, her parents had been captured by the Robotnik Empire during an ambush, leaving her orphaned, and then a few years later being recruited into a vigilante group similar to the Freedom Fighters then imploded when one of its members sold them out to the Empire, once again leaving her the sole survivor, and then of course losing her wisps a few days ago. But she tried her best to at least keep the mindset, and listening to that very same song that her dad had played on the ride home ten years ago helped remind her of that.

But the song was relatively short, only two minutes and forty-five seconds long, so soon enough, she had to move on to another song.

“Seriously? This song?” Whisper wondered to herself.

It wasn’t like she disliked this song. No, she loved it. She loved Three Days Grace, and nu metal in general. She even remembered Tangle playfully teasing her for it when Whisper first brought it up.

“Wow! You really are as much of an angsty teenager as you look!” She had said. Whisper knew even back then that she had meant no harm from it - that’s just how Tangle is. She says things in not the most tactful of ways, but she always means well by it.

But with this song playing right after the last one was just. Such an odd coincidence. It was like her shuffle was trying to paint the story of her life thus far. Because of course, this song reminded her of the time she had spent with her first team of vigilante heroes, the Diamond Cutters. Not all of them, of course. Most of them were great people. It specifically reminded her of one person in particular - the one who had sold the rest out just so he could “guarantee” that he’d be the victorious one in the end.

Mimic.

It was true, she really did hate everything about him. Honestly, even back then she kinda did. Whisper never really trusted Mimic all too much, always having a bad feeling about him. But she was only around ten years old at the time, while everyone else was a late teenager or young adult, or even more or less just a regular adult with Mimic himself being twenty five back then, so no one took her suspicions seriously. Honestly, looking back, it was kinda insane how she ended up in a team like that.

But the important part was that Mimic was playing double agent at that time, secretly being an employee of the Robotnik Empire. He had led the rest of the team to certain death - all except for Whisper, and the wisps that the Diamond Cutters had used as the source of their abilities. That’s when her hatred of him had truly been cemented. That’s when she wondered why she had ever even loved him in the first place - why she used to look up to him.

… Dammit, now she’s thinking about the wisps again.

After the Diamond Cutters had been dissolved, so to speak, Whisper lived out on the streets with the wisps. It wasn’t comfortable, it wasn’t much of anything really. But even though her life seemed pretty miserable at that point, at least Mimic was out of it - though he certainly tried to track her down and kill her many times.

She grew to distrust most people, to just rely on herself and the wisps - she knew that she could at least trust that. She also put a lot of trust into the Freedom Fighters, who only grew stronger by the day, fighting off the very Empire that had ruined her life. She never really liked to admit it, but she did very much admire them, even to the level that Tangle did. They were saviors in her eyes.

Sometimes she’d wonder if she would one day come across one of the Freedom Fighters and they would take her in, kind of like how the Diamond Cutters did, but better. It was honestly a fantasy of hers - one that she never imagined would actually happen to her - she was just too unlucky for that.

And yet, she got taken in by them, eventually. Even if she did lose the wisps in the process.

There’s always a catch, isn’t there?

But before that ever happened, she did manage to find somewhere to call home. She had met Tangle and Jewel.

Whisper looked down at the shirt she was wearing, a dark blue graphic t-shirt that read “H.I.T - Heroes in Training 2009”.

“Guess my playlist isn’t the only coincidence going on today…” She remarked in her head.

It was the shirt she had gotten the same day she had met the two of them, from a yearly competition that was held by the Freedom Fighters. Whisper had entered the competition every year since the one in 2005 - her prowess with the wisp’s abilities and the wispon she had kept with her always secured at least a top five placement for her - which made it a good way to get some money to sustain herself with, since the competition came with cash rewards. She usually didn’t talk much to the other competitors, given her distrust of people. But that year was different.

Tangle had been another one of the competitors that year, and she instantly began to faun over Whisper, fascinated by her wisps and wispon from the very first time that Whisper was on stage that year. At first it made Whisper uncomfortable with just how excitable and in her face Tangle was, hell, she had become paranoid that Tangle was just Mimic in disguise trying to get Whisper into a vulnerable position. But relatively early on into the competition, Whisper let Tangle know about her concerns - to an extent, and to her surprise, Tangle apologized for her behavior and gave Whisper the space that she had asked for. As the competition went on, she opened herself up more to Tangle and her friend Jewel, taken aback by Tangle’s kindness.

When the competition ended, and Tangle and Whisper were the gold and silver winners, Tangle gave Whisper her prize money, saying that Whisper needed it far more than she did, which moved Whisper to tears that night, and just before Jewel’s parents were going to take Jewel and Tangle back home, Whisper found them and asked if she could crash at their place - feeling that she didn’t want to lose the first real people she had come to trust in so long.

And then Whisper never left their place. She had found a new home and family in Tangle and Jewel.

At least she still had them. That was a relief.

But she still wished that she had the wisps still with her. She still felt ashamed that she lost them in the first place. After so long of not trusting anybody thanks to the damage that Mimic had done to her, she had learned to trust again thanks to Jewel and Tangle. She didn’t blame them, she really tried not to, but she still felt angry that she had let her trust be taken advantage of again. It’s not like it was their fault, though. Their trust was taken advantage of just as much as hers was.

“It’s a shame, isn’t it?” Whisper heard a voice say despite the music she had on.

Whisper looked around for where the voice could have come from, but she didn’t see anyone around, so she just chalked it up to her imagination and kept walking.

“I know how it feels to lose someone like that, I really do.” The voice spoke again.

“Hello…?” Whisper called out, pausing her music to be able to hear the voice more clearly.

“Hi! You’re Whisper, right?” The voice greeted her, the source of it being revealed to be a jade green fox-like cat mobian that looked to be around the same age as Whisper. She had pastel pink eyes that partially hid behind silver-rimmed glasses, and wore an off the shoulders sweater and a skirt that were various shades of purple-ish pink, the sweater having a graphic of a gear on the chest and sleeves. She had in her hands a hot pink rhythm wispon, likely corresponding to the magenta rhythm wisp by her side.

“Uhm… yeah.” It took her a minute to realize it, but Whisper had seen this girl before. During her walk to the Clysdale Clinic a few days ago, back before the fight, she had seen the girl among a group of friends that all had wisps with them. She remembered how she had been weirdly reminded of the Diamond Cutters by the sight of them, in a way she absolutely hated. Still, she should probably not hold that against the girl.

“Oh, good! Doctor Clysdale had told me about you!” The girl then responded, immediately causing Whisper’s defenses to go up again just as she had started to lower them.

“D-Doctor Clysdale??” Whisper questioned in a panic, instinctively pointing her wispon at the girl.

“Oh, yeah, you two aren’t on the best of terms. I remember that now.” The girl sneered, casually lowering the muzzle of Whisper’s wispon without even a bit of hesitation. The only emotion on her face at that moment, in fact, was annoyance. “Why don’t we forget about them for now? The name’s Gear. I’m the leader of the Starlight City Militia.” She then said, her face returning to the same smile she had before so quickly that it came off as uncanny of her.

“The… Starlight City Militia?” Whisper echoed, a flurry of emotions filling her as she had said them. Concern, confusion and fear, to be exact. “As in.. part of the Mobotropolis Militia Organization established by Sally Acorn and the Acorn Royal Family after the Phantom Ruby War??”

“That’s the one!” Gear replied. “You have something like that with your friends, don’t you? I don’t think you’re the official Spiral Hill Militia, but something else, right?”

“The Freedom Trainees. Why are you asking?” Whisper responded, unnerved by how Gear was prying into her life so blatantly after their rocky introduction.

“Just a bit curious, was all.” Gear answered, completely looking past the aggravated and yet shaky tone of Whisper’s voice. “How’d you find yourself in the possession of wisps if you’re not a Militia member?” She then asked.

“You don’t get to know…” Whisper hissed, her concern fading and her fear took over - convinced that this girl must be working for the Black Arms in some way.

“Excuse me?” Gear reacted, her smile disappearing again as a look of utter disdain replaced it. “Who the fuck do you think you are, talking to someone you just met like that?” She said, chastising her.

“Whisper Lycriah. I’m Whisper Lycriah and I’ll talk to you however I damn well fucking please.” Whisper replied, completely done with acting nice.

“All I did was ask you a simple question. That’s all I did. No wonder you refused Doctor Clysdale’s guidance, you ungrateful bitch.” Gear snapped. Yeah, that’s it. Whisper was certain that this chick was bad news.

“I don’t think I’d call myself “ungrateful”, personally. I actually consider myself lucky that I escaped the clinic before they could do to me whatever it is that they did to you…” Whisper argued, preparing to have a fight with Gear.

“I see. I’m sure your wisps would love to hear that you said that.” Gear remarked snidely, causing Whisper to become enraged.

“I’LL GET THEM BACK, JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE! THEY'RE JUST AS UNCOMFORTABLE WITH ALL THIS AS I AM!!” Whisper hollered, lunging at Gear to attack her.

But before she could reach her, Gear knocked her back with a sonic blast from her wispon. Though the blast tossed Whisper to the ground, she quickly got back up and was ready to face Gear again.

Except she wasn’t there anymore.

Gear and her wisp had completely disappeared, and no matter how hard Whisper looked for them, she couldn’t find where they had gone.

Once Whisper realized that her odds of finding Gear were next to none, she decided to retrieve the communicator that Tails had given her on her way out of the Sky Patrol and called Amy with it.

“Hey Whisper, feeling any better?” Amy asked right after picking up.

“Not particularly, no…” Whisper admitted.

“Oh? Then what are you calling for, girlie?” Amy inquired, sounding concerned.

“There’s something that I think you guys need to know about…” Whisper answered vaguely.

Halla, I get that you have to deal with lots of naysayers but wow… that was really not necessary. I'd actually be the first one who’d agree that most of the items in the house set bear specific meaning but, as my reply clearly showed, I'd already looked into the books a bit because I had the very same idea as you. Shocker, I know — there are others who think about those things!! That is why I had the link at the ready btw. I’ve just not found any deep/ convincing connections to the themes yet but I'm open to change my opinion if you find any. I also suggested that they picked the books for family connections/ sentimental reasons. I didn’t say "not that deep". And concerning Faust - I actually studied this play at university (in Germany btw) and teach it every year so that lecture wasn’t needed. I am perfectly aware that it’s about "selling your soul to the devil" duh. The themes that I named are perfectly correct. (ofc there's still more than that…) I'd normally be really excited to read your thoughts/ discuss how those themes relate to ATVB/ SATVB (and yeah, there’s plenty of cool things to talk about) but now I'm not that keen anymore. This is the anon deeply saddened by my generation At the risk of being piled on by pro-abort extremists on here--

We as humanity and as an American society have more scientific fact and truth about human life inside the womb and when it begins, than ever before in human history, ready at our fingertips. We have photos of lives torn apart by abortion. Do you ever think that people see the truth of that and don't care--they just *want* abortion, they just want it? Do you ever feel angry about it?

I'm almost ashamed to admit that over the last couple years, my anger over that seems to have appeared out of nowhere and only grown. I worked in a pro-life pregnancy medical clinic for almost 3 yrs in Cali before moving in 2020. I've met with women who were lost and just needed a kind ear and compassion and reassurance, and I have literally been the one to provide that active compassion and reassurance. I have been moved to compassion by that many times, and it was a pricelessly rewarding experience for me. I have had deep compassion and love for women in that position.

Perhaps it's been too long since I was actively serving in that capacity and I need to reawaken that compassion. Or perhaps the compassion is still there, but is recently being overshadowed by anger in me that I hadn't felt so starkly before. Sadly I can't imagine that I'm in a good place, at least rn, to be of service in that same way in a pro-life preg clinic at this time.

I have seen pictures of aborted baby remains and have chosen to not turn a blind eye to the horrific tragedies of their lives actively, physically crushed and ended. I have deep fears whether I'll ever be able to have any of my own precious children. I can't relate to women wanting abortion anymore. There's also the many, many ways the abortion industry has been exposed and proven to have corruptly and illegally betrayed women, men, families, and children.

I guess I'm just wondering if I'm the only one feeling this anger over our society and my generation actively choosing and clinging to abortion despite ample access to fact and truth. Sometimes I'm close to crying I'm so angry. Humans who choose that in the face of truth will not have an excuse for it before the Lord.

You are definitely not the only one feeling that anger and I think this is an anger that is good to feel in some capacity. It's a righteous anger at a very real and terrible injustice and the things you are saying are absolutely true and need to be said.

Like you mentioned, we have more scientific proof than ever before that proves life begins at conception. The evidence is so abundant no real scientist can honestly say life doesn't begin at conception or that the unborn are not human beings at conception. There's no debate about it in science and technology has advanced so far that we can even see and monitor babies in the womb. Yet the people who claim to be the party of science turn a blind eye to these indisputable scientific facts. And I often wonder how people can just blatantly ignore these realities or even be completely unaware of them. But I think that's because people who are pro-choice aren't actually looking at or following the science. They're listening to Planned Parenthood and counting on them to convey the science to them. They're listening to abortion providers and mainstream media, their professors, favorite celebrities, etc. and they are hearing the unborn being referred to as "pregnancy tissue" "the pregnancy" "the fetus" "a clump of cells" and more dehumanizing terms and when you get fed that day after day, especially when it's your only source for abortion information, you're going to accept it. They hear it, they repeat it, and they believe it.

The abortion industry needs the fact that human life starts at conception not to be true so they are going to do what they can to cover up and explain away the truth and so far they have done so very effectively. Abortion is also extremely harmful to women but they've also duped people into believing that it's safer than childbirth. They lie constantly and are not being held accountable.

And it's maddening. Especially when you try to show the truth with pictures or actual scientific sources and get accused of spreading propaganda.

We really are fighting a war for the unborn. We win some and we lose some. We feel the losses, the wounds, and the despair very strongly.

You should be proud of the work you have done in the clinic and for pregnant women. I know it's discouraging when our society doesn't seem to be changing its mind on this issue, but if even one woman chooses life when considering abortion, and one child's life is saved, that makes it all worth it to me and a lot of lives have been saved by your work and the work of others in the movement.

I'm sorry you are feeling so disheartened, but don't be ashamed of your anger. Everyone should be angry about this. If you're not feeling up to serving in the same way you did before then I wouldn't force yourself to. It's perfectly ok and healthy to take time and deal with the emotions you're experiencing. It's a heavy subject and it can take a toll on you.

It is very frustrating and angering when so many people don't even seem to care what the truth is. Like I've even heard some people state that even if the unborn were people you should still be allowed to kill them and that really gets to me because how can anyone be perfectly ok and unbothered at the idea of killing a baby? It is beyond me.

Some people really have just been misinformed about the truth, some are willfully ignorant, and some just flat out don't care. I am always dumbfounded at how biologically illiterate so many pro-choicers are. Even with it being a long known scientific fact that human life starts at conception it’s shocking how many of them think a fetus is a word for something non-human. And I don't think anger is in an inappropriate reaction, as long as your anger isn't detrimental to your mental health.

Sorry I feel like I got a little ranty but this is an important issue to me and I've been feeling more passionate about it lately than usual and you brought up some good points. If you want to discuss this further or even just want to vent feel free to reach out anytime.

Since I post about vocal synth, and most importantly about SynthV, which is The AI vocal synth program, to an audience of people who followed me for strange reasons ranging from "Danganronpa" to "Akudama Drive" passing by "they don't remember" (all of which are valid), I sometimes see either of those two reactions:

Regarding the second one...... here is my default statement......... if you need it...........: she's on Piapro Studio. Unfortunately

In 2019, the company that owns Miku, the Kagamine twins, Kaito, Meiko and Luka decided to move away from VOCALOID (the program) to have their own program instead, being Piapro Studio. They released Miku in 2020. And then nothing else.

"Hatsune Miku NT" is the latest version of Miku and it's generally understood not to be her best? Some people will say she's the worst, and the most optimistic fans will say she can sound good. That's not a very positive description, lol. She is not AI, as I'm pretty sure this voicebank *juuust* pre-dates the AI boom that really changed the vocal synth market. Vocal synth has shown to use AI ethically, and SynthV notably uses it very efficiently. Nowadays, people expect AI voicebanks, so what would be good for Miku would be to get an AI voicebank too. The issues are as follows:

where crypton? They haven't made voicebanks for their other characters yet.

Since they've not done anything in a while, there's no way of knowing that they're exploring AI as an option or that they may work with AI in the future.

With the move to their own program, Miku can no longer be used by VOCALOID, which is why she is not getting an AI VOCALOID6 voicebank. Unless Crypton comes back begging.*

With that move, it's also unlikely that Crypton is interested in partnering with any other company, so Miku CeVio or Miku SynthV don't seem realistic either.

Did you read that tumblr post way too many people reblogged about how "Miku should NEVER be compared to AI, which is bad, because Miku is good"? Yeah I think Miku is so mainstream, and the mainstream so ignorant about AI and why we talk about it being bad, that it would be a risky decision for her voice provider, Saki Fujita, to make an AI voicebank. Imagine the fearmongering. Imagine people thinking Miku became problematic because they're completely ignorant about both vocal synth and AI. That's what I call Hell.

*By the way, VOCALOID6 kinda sucks. It doesn't sound very good and it's more expensive than other modern programs that sound better. Even if Miku got a V6 AI, even though it would be reassuring to see Miku go anywhere at this point, there's a high risk that she would sound disappointing.

As far as I'm aware, the only notably good thing about Hatsune Miku NT is that they finally drew her with a lot of hair again. Honestly, I've listened to some covers that used that voicebank, and yeah, she can sound alright. It's just nothing special, and Piapro Studio has given us nothing. (I forgot to mention. Hatsune Miku NT alone costs ~130€. Programs other than Piapro and VOCALOID offer cheaper prices.)

I don't think it's completely hopeless, though. I'm paying attention. Sometimes when I talk about something it suddenly gets an update so you never know

Plans Are In Progress (Commissions)

Hello, everybody. The current, EXTREMELY belated round of commissions is still a work in progress. My next workdate for them is thiscoming Monday, unless something changes. They should be finished before December.

People have been coming to me a lot recently, asking about when I'll be open again, and what's going to happen once I do. I won't go into detail, because I'm still working out all the details, but I do want to keep you all posted on updates.

The past two years of commission work - and especially this year - have been unmitigated disasters. Last year, in 2022, I attempted a system that I hoped would make it easier for me to get work done in-between rounds. It did not work at all. This year, I tried something similar, while also taking crowd control into effect...and it backfired on me spectacularly, leading to the current, dismal, highly disappointing and immensely frustrating state of affairs. All I can do in regards of the mistakes of the past is apologize, and hope that through this and other future plans, I won't lose too many of you in the process. Your patronage and support, dear commissioners and potential commissioners, is highly valued by me; please never believe otherwise.

WITH THAT SAID...I have learned some lessons as a result of the past couple years, this one included, and I'm going to try and use them to my advantage next year. For 2024, when I return to work, commissions will not be run the way they were this time, nor the way they were in 2022. In some ways, I'll be going back to basics, running comms effectively the way I always did from at least 2020 backwards.

HOWEVER, in other ways, things ARE going to change again. Like I said, right now I won't go into detail, because I don't HAVE all the details. Suffice it to say...for various reasons, I can no longer complete commissions with the speed and diligence I used to be able to manage when I started out. This year has been proof of that, if nothing else. I need to start making some changes in my life, my schedule, and my business management, and this means that the next few years are up in the air. I'm going to try and play things less intensely, in terms of planning, and I'm going to try and do some things that will allow me to give you all my best, without sacrificing my productivity, let alone my profits.

I know all this is vague and nebulous; I'm still figuring out the scheme. I intend to have plans ready for the block of January - April ready by the time I finish the current bunch of stories. So, sometime in December, I will be posting a journal to let everybody know what's going on, and I will make adjustments to my Commission Info tab accordingly.

As the Metalocalypse movie gets deeper in development (y tambn el concierto q tuvieron) I think about the possible things the movie is going to throw at us.

"Po the Dragon Warrior and The Furious Five"

The Six Kung Fu defenders, ready for action!

Kung Fu Panda is probably my favorite franchise, aside from How to Train Your Dragon that DreamWorks has done!

It's been a very long time since I've done anything related to Kung Fu Panda, so I thought I would redo an older one I did back in 2020.

Even though I still really like the original price, I was able to find some areas I felt that needed tweaking and changing for this redraw.

I decided to alter their clothing to match how they look in the final third movie of the trilogy. I was able get Tigress's face to look a lot better than it did the first go around.

I'm honestly really pleased with how well this turned out, also helps that I spent a little more time in the day to do this one as compared to the original.

What Micah's been up to

It's been about four years since Tumblr put up that ill-advised NSFW ban and led me to leave "forever." I honestly didn't think I'd come back. I started gaining a lot of momentum on Twitter and I'd been growing dissatisfied with Tumblr on the whole. At the time I was looking for a reason to leave and the carte-blanche NSFW ban was the nail in the coffin. I still don't fully trust Tumblr's admin, but they're allowing the kind of art I do again and my past frustrations with Tumblr don't need to be covered here.

So here are some of the things I've done the last few years!

Calendar projects!

Since 2018, I have produced four illustrated calendars that funded on Kickstarter! I started with the 2019 Hunks & Myth Calendar, which featured shirtless men from around the world carrying cute baby versions of mythological creatures!

I followed that up with the 2020 Hunks & Myth Calendar, which had mythological men and baby animals. That one was successful but not as big as the prior year. Fortunately, it was pre-covid, so I can tell it was less about the life circumstances and more about the subject itself. Just wasn't as in-demand, which is okay! Live and learn.

I took a year off from calendars and then put together the 2022 Coffeehouse Hunks Calendar! This one featured twelve coffee recipes you can make at home, all accompanied by a sort of "gijinka" hunk of that coffee drink! This one did VERY well and it was very encouraging to see it go so hard.

The Coffeehouse Hunks' success led me to create this year's calendar project, the 2023 Cocktail Hunks Calendar! The Cocktail Hunks followed the Coffeehouse theme -- a series of cocktail recipes accompanied by a "gijinka" of that drink. This was even more fun and it's been great to see how my art has evolved since the first calendar -- since the 2022 calendar, even! The Cocktail Hunks far surpassed my expectations and it feels really, really good to see so many people interested in my work like this!

If any of you are interested in the Cocktail Hunks Calendar, or recipe cards for either the Cocktails or Coffeehouse Hunks, I do have copies that I'll be posting for sale soon. So please keep an eye out for that!

The Sparrow

The year 2021 marked another big, big, big spike in my artistic career. It's when I ran and funded the Kickstarter for the Sparrow!

Some of you may remember I was still working on the Sparrow even before I left Tumblr. A lot has changed, a lot has grown out of it, a lot has happened, and thanks to Kickstarter support, I was able to fund the Sparrow's very first print run! A whole 70 pages of comics plus some bonus content like character interviews, RPG character sheets and profiles, and more.

I'm in the midst of making Book 2 right now. It'll be a while before I finish that, but you wouldn't believe how amazing it was to see so many people back the Sparrow, a book many of them had never heard of. Honestly, it was a little overwhelming, and it's amazing that I still get people interested in buying at cons and the like.

You can get a PDF version of the Sparrow on my Gumroad shop or read the whole thing on my Sparrow website. It's like Percy Jackson meets the X-Men but more gay :D

Other things

The Sparrow and the Calendars have been my biggest projects the last few years. But some other things I've worked on include:

Soldier/Sailor: A gay superhero oneshot -- This 20-page one-shot was written by Andrew Wheeler (Sins of Black Flamingo, Marvel Voices: Pride, etc.) and drawn by me. It follows the story of Jacob, aka Warrior One, as he reunites with his old lover Armon, Prince of Atlantis.

The Strapping Lads: A D&D Supplement - Twelve classes, twelve men, all ready for your D&D campaign. I put this together for FlameCon 2019 and it went over pretty well >:]

Mutants and Masterminds: Parade Route - I got hired to do the cover art for this Mutants and Masterminds RPG supplement! This illustration features the gay man Johnny Rocket supporting teammate and trans woman Lady Liberty as she attends her first Pride as both an openly queer person and a superhero!

I think there's more that's happened but those are some of my big highlights for the last few years. I'll also post some of my backlog here over the next while, once I have a chance to schedule in some posting. I hope you enjoy, and thank you to everyone that is still here and remembers lil ol' me!

Writer's end-of-year roundup, 2022! 🎉🎆

Despite the myriad hardships of the year for me - losing my old beagle, fighting doctors, a completely stupid amount of grief/loss, migraines and disability oh my! - it's actually been an amazingly productive and inspired year? I'm very proud! I completed the second draft of my first-ever longfic, which needs another round of editing or two before it's ready to be published, and I've discovered I LOVE editing. More than I love writing, actually????? Lots of people talk about the Dreaded Editing but for me, it was vastly easier than writing the first draft was LOL. I also did what I thought I would never do, which is create another Shepard, Morrigan Vesta, and I actually wrote mostly about her during NaNoWriMo this year. I'm finally getting the hang of how to give characters unique voices (or portray a canon character's voice accurately, which is something I used to be extremely hung up on). I can honestly say I've made a lot of progress both as a person and as a writer this year, and I'm finally starting to find my joy in writing again. Very exciting!

Taking a page out of @pikapeppa 's book in how to format this year's data- I love seeing your charts every year!! My own chart ended up being quite a bit messier, but that's probably because of how I tweaked it to fit my fics. I apologize deeply if the image quality gets butchered, I am not wise in the ways of battling Tumblr's nonsense

(HEY GUESS WHO FORGOT A FIC......the one I forgot is Marevera's Dream, which is a Wayfarer post-Ep 1 pre-Ep 2 WIP, and it clocks in at 1,174 words, making my actual total 60,486!!!!!)

*I forgot to note that In this darkness, on my own is a followup to A New and Dark Horizon.

60K........DUDE!!! I haven't written that much since junior high/I got my depression diagnosis in like 2016, so this is. Big!

New things I tried: For starters, I paced myself during NaNo instead of forcing myself to write every day like I did during NaNo 2020. And WOW was that a night-and-day difference! In 2020, I wrote about 20k and burned myself out so bad I couldn't write for another 6-8 months. This year, I wrote about 30k, and only sat down to write about half the days, successfully dodging burnout. I think that's a valuable lesson for me in what works for me, how to balance my desire to write with what I'm actually capable of that day, and how to work with my disability without letting it limit me.

I also wrote in first person for the first time in maaaaaany years, and while it's not as comfy as third person, it wasn't bad, and it was a good way to explore the different strengths of POVs.

And since my laptop had a fatal encounter with a cup of coffee last spring (RIP little buddy), I've gotten very comfy writing on my phone, which I had previously only done for Across the Sea and Part 1 & Part 3 of broken body built anew because I was bored/inspired during a long car ride LOL.

Fic I spent the most time on: Going Over Jordan, easy. I originally wrote it during NaNo 2020, then re-wrote it at some point during 2021 (time is a weird soup so I don't remember). And then I rewrote it AGAIN this year, edited the crap out of it, printed it, and will edit it again sometime in 2023. It's a fic that exists purely because I am at times a spiteful little goblin, and I had Opinions about the MEA main mission Hunting the Archon, i.e. I didn't agree with how Bioware wrote the companions' responses to Ryder's temporary death, and my Ryder is also an anxious neurodivergent wreck like myself, so I wanted to write how that mission would have actually gone with Brynja as Pathfinder. I wanted to highlight the relationships Brynja has with her friends (particularly Jaal), and I also just wanted her take on the mission in general, because it's not the same as what's in-game. I mean....a lot of people die gruesome deaths in that mission and you see the aftermath, you see the gutted and maimed corpses. There's a lot of horror inherent to what Bioware wrote for that mission, but they glossed over it big time. I wanted to fix that.

I'd like to have someone beta read it, but Andromeda is a niche market as it were, and I've never had anyone beta my work before, so that's honestly the biggest reason it's not published yet. It would benefit greatly from beta reading I think, but uh. I don't know how to make that happen. I'm gonna publish the dang thing in 2023 or 2024 at the latest, though, even if it kills me DGKLJDHLG.

Fic I spent the least time on: I can't say for certain, but it's probably the microfics. Those took only a couple hours. Aside from those, not counting WIPs, it'd most likely be Across the Sea, which I wrote on my phone while sitting on the kitchen floor.

Favorite thing I wrote: ALMOST ALL OF THEM. In all seriousness though, there are a few that have a special place in my heart, and the most important one is Across the Sea. I'd been wanting to explore how Marian processes/copes with Thane's death pretty much since the day I created her, but I never got around to putting any of it on paper until the time came for me to say goodbye to my dog, a 17yo beagle named Maggie we adopted in 2019, last February.

It was an absolutely hellish series of events just in those few days alone: I had a sleep study done which gave me the worst migraine of my life, I threw up in a random parking lot, went home and tried to sleep the migraine off, and was woken up a few hours later to my mom sitting on my bed and saying, quietly, "Maggie's dying". My migraine quit mattering at that point. I sat with her on the couch for hours, held her paw, petted her softly. My parents took turns sitting with her in the living room overnight.

Ultimately, she was just suffering so much for so long we had to take her to the vet. It was a weekend, so it was going to be hours before they opened. Maggie got up and stumbled to the kitchen, and she laid down in front of the door to the garage, and I just...sat with her. There was nothing I could do to help or save her, so I kept her company in her last hours. In the midst of moving and the uncertainty surrounding my health, my new disabilities, traumatizing doctor appointment after traumatizing doctor appointment, I was having to say goodbye to the greatest light and joy of my life a mere 6 months after we lost the dog we've had since I was 3 years old (a shih tzu named Reggie, who wore the pride of his breed like a royal mantle and never stopped carrying himself like a king, even when he didn't recognize us anymore).

Maybe it's silly to compare the loss of a dog to the loss of a lover, but...things just clicked in my brain. I wrote Across the Sea for and about Thane and Marian, yes, but it was for me and my beagle, too, in equal measure. Thane was terminally ill but even so he died quite unexpectedly (THANKS KAI LENG), and the same was true of Maggie. So it was....maybe it's a silly thought, but it was a vent piece. I understood my grief through the lens of Marian's, since hers was so much easier to tackle than my own in its huge overwhelming weight. I'm a very private person with big emotions, and my grief was - and is - a very personal thing. Something I needed to keep close to my chest, hidden, at the time. To write Marian's grief as I waited with Maggie for the inevitable, it was like I had a companion, a friend sitting with me in that grief. I understood Marian much better then.

So perhaps mechanically speaking, Across the Sea isn't my best piece (I'm honestly not certain where it ranks quality-wise), but it is....the writing equivalent of those pendants that carry your loved one's ashes, for me. And it's done quite well on AO3. Knowing that people have enjoyed this piece that is so precious to me and comes from a place of such deep sorrow...there is no greater honor I could ask for, I think. It's a fitting tribute to a character and franchise I love, that's gotten me through many hard times, and to the beagle that made the horrors of life worth living.

(Aside from that, my other favorites are broken body built anew (first trilogy piece), Going Over Jordan (first longfic), In this darkness on my own, Farewell to Arms, Des profondeurs dans la nuit, and the ME3 early game Morrilenko duology Never Enough/In the shadow of your heart.)

Favorite thing I read: Imma be real with you chief, I have.....not read much. Not as far as books go, anyway. But I've sure read some amazing fic and interactive fiction games!!

I reread a bunch of stuff, partly to examine the technical strengths of my fave writers and stories, and partly because hey, they're my favorite stories!! Off the top of my head, the pieces I reread were: Flotsam, Ain't Sentimental, and Loose Ends by @asaara-writes; Sorrow and Resistance by @/myrini; and while I didn't get the chance to reread/finish these like I'd hoped, A Lesson in Drowning by @theherocomplex, Where the Winds of Fortune Take Me and Lovers in a Dangerous Time by pikapeppa are bookmarked both on AO3 and in my brain for the same reasons as the shorter pieces

everything @coldshrugs has written in the past year or two. Both as a writer and as a reader, shorter form fiction is more accessible to my migraine-addled brain (I love reading long stuff but it's often migraine trigger T^T) and Azia's a MASTER of short fiction???? So much punch packed into such concise words!! Incredible clarity and emotional depth!!!! There are many writers on this site that I admire and respect greatly, and Azia is one of them

My favorite IF this year is 100% Wayfarer (@/idrellegames). I haven't been able to focus on it as much as I'd have liked, but the COMPLEXITY the DEPTH. I'm in awe of it and Idrelle. The scope of the project is so massive and the intrigue and depth of the story and characters is incredible to see, Idrelle is a one-person-army of a writer. It'd be easy to think that Wayfarer is made by a team, but nope! It's all the genius and dedication of Idrelle. Having followed Wayfarer from the beginning, the only words I can describe it is awe-inspiring

My writing goals are going in a separate post because this is about 19 times longer than I meant it to be DHFLJKDSLKJHG. If you've read this far, thank you so much!!!!!!! I know it probably got a little more personal and a little bit sadder than you were expecting, so thanks for sticking with me- and I don't blame you an ounce if you skim-read this or skipped some sections. Keep on creating, everybody. Your stories, your art, your headcanons and metas and dumb jokes, you bring light into my life, and the lives of others. I want you to know that your works bring comfort and happiness to the life of one lost and drifting young woman...and I want to thank you for it, sincerely. I know for a fact I'm not the only person whose life is made better by your presence. The fact that we haven't met in-person doesn't lessen your impact by an ounce.
