could you recommend me some (any and all) scp fics to put on my to read list? im trying to get back into the fandom after not really keeping up with it for a while and now i cant fund anything that isn’t incredibly confusing or like 7 years old

First of all thank u i love deer woman hehe! 2nd of all by god I sat on this for over 3 months bc, like, see, the thing about scp is that the line between fanfic and canon might as well not exist. I sincerely recommend that if youre trying to get back into it you start with the actual site itself bc most of the good writers who are into scp are just straight up on there.

However (!) there’s still a handful of offsite scp writing deemed “too soft” for the site or written by someone unwilling to engage with the wikis greenlighting process (which I respect massively, same hat) that im very fond of that I put under the cut 4 you. I hope you find something you like in there!

Peanut Butter Cookies by bandtrees

Possibly my favorite SCP fanfic on all of AO3. Follows Troy Lament during the events of In His Own Image, but with a few more glimpses into his private life and inner workings than he is afforded on the wiki. Also features some really charming appearances from miscellaneous senior staff, most prominently Agatha Rights. An examination of what it would actually be like to work for the Foundation, especially under one of its old legends, carried by very real-feeling character interactions.

the delicate art of sleeping through the night by thefriendlyvandal

I feel like everyone already knows about this one but it deserves to go here anyway by virtue of making me so thoroughly unwell (in the very best of ways). Clef/Kondraki fic taking place in the same universe as SCP-4231, and in fact written by the same guy. Perpetually unfinished, but what's there is enough to tear my heart out thrice over. Those old men can be so doomed.

The First Year by existentialterror

Arguably not fanfic at all by virtue of being written by Light's author, but it fits the above-mentioned criteria of being offsite writing that I think is really underrated. Light and her assistant Vaux's first Christmas at their newly acquired Site up in Scandinavia where they look at ghosts and contemplate the past and the Foundation and their place within it. Wonderful little character study and full of the humanity that authorlight imbues all of her writing with

Then and Now by bondsmagii

In the same weird not-really-fanfic-limbo as the above Light story since it's written by authorkondraki, but who cares. Set in the same universe as Quiet Days, Kondraki and his twin sister explore the ruins of Site-17 some few years after the end. A bit hammy, but I think about it a lot.

feathers and lonely cells by Nacho

Iris angst set in the Devils Advocate canon but not necessarily requiring having read it to understand what's going on. Wingfic, which I didn't know was like, a whole thing, before stumbling across it but it sure does take the concept of "people having wings" places. Ongoing, I'm acquainted with the author and they're planning on continuing it!

Also I fail to pick just one but I think everyone should check out my friend John @handsome-john's entire ao3 gallery he is such a skilled writer and I think everyone should clap and cheer for him. Known on this blog mostly for Mann/Kondraki cannibalism yaoi so far but he's been letting me peep his works in progress and he's dropping some massive bangers soon it looks like. Haha John you are on my tumblr blog

part 2 of this ask

📝Process for hurt mezu drawing

here are the steps i dug out of an art server's wips channel lol

1. initial sketch

2. refine sketch. thats lines now babey. (omitted "the sleeves are KILLING ME WAHHH" stage that led to this)

3. grayscale, to use with gradient map (this is a more polished grayscale than I started with, i dug the working file out to get better images)

4. find nice gradient map (ended up being the same one I'd used for the piece i made right before. the goal is to make what's essentially an underpainting, not to color the whole thing with one map)

5. tweak and add colors that arent in the map with hard light layers & also sneak in a layer for special effect and atmospheric/ scenic perspective while you're at it

6. shading & more finishing effects. pretty much all of the shading was done with hard light layers! the only non-hard light layers I used for the shading were the particle effect layers & like one faint glow layer to fix some values. blood was done with linear burn

✨Inspiration for hurt mezu drawing

the coloring method (grayscale -> saturated gradient map underpainting -> additive color adjustments) is something I tried out with the piece i'd made right before (the one where gozu is holding mezu from behind) & turned out really well, so I wanted to keep going with it

I also wanted to draw them angstily again because it'd been a very long time. like half a year at least. angsting them is very enriching for my soul so I try to do it regularly, this one was overdue

subconsciously referenced the poses in the initial sketch from this old thing (feb 2021). i love doing this. all my for-fun works recycle old elements in some way. my favorite game is "what old art reminds me of what im doing rn" im so good at digging stuff out of my archives for it. everyone loves when i do this

the gangi-kozou panel also

i went through a "shade in bold red-orange & dark blue with hard light layers" phase in like..april/may of 2021. i still like that stuff a lot so I wanted to revisit it

repasting the link there but the sixth image in the process is essentially the final so you can just look at that

the colors are nice!! I'm real happy with using more saturated colors n I think the warm vs cool balance works really well

the sleeves (man being dramatic on the sand meme)

no like fr look at the 2021 piece's kimono sleeves vs the one I just did 2.5 years later. so satisfying

Gozu's expression came out nice

i think the claws and flash lines successfully added Emphasis to Gozu's expression & the piece overall

the poses … the drama …. the brush textures are also good

⏳Things you’d do differently with hurt mezu drawing

add in a liiitle more contrast...aka use a wider range of values. Some lighter lights and darker darks. I miss my 2021 hard neon lighting

a bit more distinction between the characters and the background also

the composition isn't bad but it could be better. Should've thought more about the way the eye would flow around the image in the drafting stage (solid b&w color block thumbnails are good for this)

Moar Sparkles. (I put a solid amount of large & low opacity light bubbles in there & some finer brighter dots especially around the claw stems, but I think more clusters of tiny bright lights on the characters themselves would've gone hard)

I wanna talk shepherds with you, if you have a moment! The first dogs I ever fell in love with were border collies (my uncle's showline dogs), my friend's GSD mix, and both a heeler mix and a couple wonderful GSDs from when I worked in boarding. It's been suggested to me that I would find a R/S collie a wonderful fit for me but I have only met one (he was perfect BTW) so I'm wondering your thoughts on the breed and if you have any comparisons to GSDs or BCs specifically?

big ol' asterisk first that i have not spent extended amounts of time with GSDs or BCs, so my answer is probably going to be very vague, as most of my impressions from those breeds are from short interactions, or what i've observed of them in a vet hospital (which i know is not a great showcase of character).

i would not say that collies and GSDs are very similar to live with, but that's also going to really depend on the type of GSD you're used to - there's such a variety of personalities between police K9s, working/sporting lines, BYB messes, generic pet-bred dogs, and showlines. in my experience GSDs tend to be much more blunt in their communication - i feel like you always know what they're asking for, or what they're unhappy about. and there's also the fact that GSDs are (generally) going to default to Bitey Time and standing their ground if they feel pushed, and that is very opposite of a collie. i am not at all a GSD person, but my favorite one i've ever spent time with was a showline dog - he was enormous, and mellow, and stunningly beautiful, and i'm sure true-blue working GSD people would have hated him, but i thought he was a great dog (draw what conclusions you want from that). i don't vibe with dogs that come off really strong, which is why i like sighthounds and collies a lot - they're both more subtle in their behavior. i would not call a GSD subtle lol.

the collie/BC comparison is a bit closer, with the main difference being 'sharpness', i think. IME a collie is going to be much more tolerant - of handling, of other animals, of their environment, of training. they are sensitive dogs and can shut down if the wrong buttons are pushed, but it's generally easy to see that happening and they can also recover well with patience. collies are very polite dogs at heart, and avoid conflict. not to say they don't have their snarky or feisty sides (@ stellina) but when shit gets serious, they will almost always back away from conflict. some people want a dog with a little more fire - those people i'd probably steer away from collies. but some people (like me) like having a dog that's a pacifist at heart, because it makes them very safe and easy dogs to live with. i have zero tolerance for aggression (human or animal), so a dog that's socially fluid is super important to me.

(keep in mind that none of this excludes confidence - some collie lines have issues with fear and anxiety. a well-bred collie should be a pacifist, but confident and polite. if they startle, they recover. their curiosity and intelligence helps them stay adaptable, so while issues like reactivity and fearfulness can still be an issue, they really shouldn't be.)

i think what really sets a collie apart from other herders is that inherent politeness - it really softens a lot about them and, unlike most other herding breeds, it's what allows them to be such good candidates for service and therapy work. IMO a collie is kind of a best of both worlds for herding dogs - they are smart and silly and up for trying on new challenges and adventures, but they're also easy and flexible and not demanding. they let you know what they're feeling, but aren't in-your-face. if you particularly like a dog with a lot of sharpness and resilience, a collie's probably not the best fit. if you want an active companion and don't mind the flexibility that's required for raising a "soft" dog, i think a collie works great! definitely try to spend some time with them if you can, i really fell in love with the breed once i started meeting them.

tl;dr i wouldn't say collies are super similar to GSDs or BCs, but if you like the core herding dog personality just wrapped up in a squishy sensitive layer, then you'll like a collie.

3. How would you describe your writing style?

Hmm, well for one I'm definitely not a stickler for traditional grammatical rules, I use punctuation and sentence length as I see fit to convey the mood or train of thought of the character. I try to write very stream-of-consciousness, so if a character is scared or has an intrusive thought, the sentences may only be one or two words long. Lots of internal dialogue.

For my more scientifically-minded characters, they'll get on a stream of thought and their sentences will go on for like 3 lines. I also don't care about starting with dialogue or sounds or whatever. Starting can often be the hardest part- whatever just feels right, I go with, and don't second guess. If the work is good no one will care how it started, right?

I'm very character-focused in my work, and I like for every part of the perspective to come from that, from the descriptions to the internal and external dialogue. What is this character perceiving, thinking, feeling, right now?

19. Share a snippet from a wip without giving any context for it.

“Kuris aras tu?” Who are you?

Your hand darts to the grip of your blaster.

Renson and Vanyiel react abruptly to your movement, readying their pikes. Why didn’t they react sooner? Their visors scan the area.

“Something wrong?” Renson asks, an unusual hint of nerves to his tone.

“Don’t you hear that?”

If anything, his senses are typically sharper than yours.

“Kuris aras tu, motina?”

You draw your blaster free, sweat beading at the back of your collar.

Motina. The word mulls over in your mind, but you have no source to point your blaster to. A cool dread pools in your abdomen, and you clench your jaw.

The silence of your guards says everything. They don’t hear a word. They search and listen for something apparently only existing inside your head.

“Motina?”

Don’t call me that, “Virt'ne visita nun anas!” you shout.

Your echo clatters through the halls, followed by a deathly silence that allows you to hear your heartbeat in your ears.

Then, you hear only giggles.

23. Dialogue or description? Why is the other one so hard?

Dialogue comes more naturally for me, I suspect because I am really character focused. These characters are constantly speaking and interacting in my head and the dialogue is what sells it in my mind. To write descriptions I often find myself performing emotions or gestures and trying to describe them, then asking Marshall if they make sense. They often don't. And scene descriptions are the worst! Its the weeds I have to get through to arrive at the meat of the scenes I want to write. Yes its important but writing it down is the worst.

28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?

Holy shit I love writing one shots. So nice to only have to hold yourself to 500 to 1000 words at a time, for like a week or two, and then you're done! Move on tp the next exercise! Let your brain be free!

I also can only write in order. If I let myself go ahead and write down the later scenes, I find I don't do justice developing what happens in-between or just never get to it at all because I dread it so much. I need the motivation of knowing I will get to that later scene to keep driving me forward. And sometimes the im-between takes me somewhere a little unexpected, gives me another detail to loop back in later. So that's always nice.

32. Do you have a word/expression that you always use in your writing?

Maybe it's just the particular subjects I'm writing but I have to use a lot of synonyms for red, and sanguine is my favorite, followed by crimson. Glowing, mask, hollow, dread, those all come up a lot too.

33. Give your writing a compliment.

So right now I'm writing a character that speaks two languages, and it doesn't always make sense to have them translating everything back and forth in their head for the reader to understand it. So I've come up with some interesting ways around that, and I asked Marshall what he thought certain words/phrases meant based on the context and he got them right first try, so apparently it is working!

Preferred name: either robbie or flower. Neither are my real name because i value my internet privacy, but most default to robbie so im comfy with either :)

When did you start watching JSE?: I started around 2016, but 2017 was when I really got into the fandom and started watching the whole channel addictively on the regular.

Why did you start watching JSE?: I had a (really toxic) ex friend who liked it and at the time I wasn't that fussed so i watched a few vids, fell in love with his personality, went down the ego rabbithole and ended up getting so connected with it that im still here to this day and its been a really positive thing for me. I don't think she's involved with the community anymore, but I still am and will be for the foreseeable future.

Favourite thing about the channel?: its between the sweet personality of the man running the channel and the wonderful community of amazing people who inhabit the fandom. I love the whole ego thing because I am a sucker for weird characters who are played by the same person. I love the amazingly kind community and the charity work that we help sean to do. I adore all of the spectacular people and friends that I've met along the way in this community and the absolute talent that lines every part of our niche intrests. I just love JSE as a whole.

Do you have a fav ego?: Its no secret that I among the very rare few whose favorite ego is Robbie the zombie(second place is marvin). He is non-cannon and was a community creation that came about after a thumbnail was made with him in it. From there, the creatives took him and made him a great custom character who is fully up to everyone's interpretation and usually he is the sweetest little cinnamon roll boi that I have ever seen. He also has an incredibly strong connection to me personally and my blogs branding throughout the years, and I could never forget how much, as a character, he has contributed to my persona online. And hes just as cute as a muffin, i wanna hug him and squish his cheeks and pat his head and hes my little blorbo now id die for him.

What kind of community member are you?: I am a very active member of the community and thoughni dont think my art is comendable i have to condsider myself(due to others perceptions) to be a community artist. I am not a theorist because I do not have the brains for that, but I do like to entertain theories and read them. I like to get very interactive with other members of the community and according to someone on a jse discord server I am a tumblr OG of this community (though I'm not sure how true that is...)

What else do you enjoy?: In terms of content: I like sander sides, I like markiplier, I like the owl house, im obsessed with all things neil gaiman, im head over heels for good omens and the sandman, i love my own ocs even if i rarely draw them, and id like to dabble and try out cosplay because its an intrest of mine among other things. As most people do, I like music and films and I am actually a grade 3 vocalist doing a filmaking course(no way! I have a life outside tumblr!?😱)

Are you open to nice messages and new friends?: Oh yeah, 100%. Please! I absolutely love interacting with people and I get so many really kind and supportive people interacting with me! I love all of you so much!!! In terms of making online friends, I don't tend to give away much about myself personally or my information outside of what I share on my blog (like my age or my real name or my face most of the time or anything), but i have been branching out more with that, having met some of you at comic con this year. So sure! im open to friendships that dont push my boundaries :)

Hello I hope everything's OK! I don't have a request at the moment but I would like to ask for some Advice, if you don't mind.

I also write every now and then, but it is mostly limited to AMAB individuals. I find the genitals a tad bit hard to describe for AFAB bodies. Since you write them often, I hope this doesn't come off as weird I just truly enjoy your works, could you spare a few tips with me?

hii !! yes yes i dont mind at all. if anything im flattered 😭 i will answer just based on what i like to read and write, but ofc that is subjective and im sure it varies from person to person. anyways here it goes <3

for referring to afab genitals i usually never use the term vagina unless there is medical talk or sth of the sort going on. which leaves me using pussy or cunt most of the time. pussy has some slight funny, whimsical element to it at least to me, so that one i usually use for less serious stuff.

for something more intense and heated, if i dont want a goofy element at all, then i use cunt. also for smut i think it sounds heavier and strengthens the effect and therefore it is mostly my go-to.

an honorable mention is core, i dont use it often but it has a nice ring to it. the downside is that it is hard to reuse in a single fic. to me its a term i use the first time i mention a character's genitals, usually with gods/primordial beings etc bc core really fits them and creates a nice atmosphere, and then i kind of alternate between other words rather than carry on with core.

have i seen fics with core being used as a primary descriptor, reused all throughout the fic and enjoyed them ? absolutely but they were all very well-written and i personally struggle with it.

now for the parts obviously we have the clit, i dont think i ever write clitoris and mostly just clit. i like the usage of "bundle of nerves" or anything along the lines of that as well, especially when a character is overstimulated and/or sensitive and you want to draw attention to that.

overall for the clit swollen, puffy, sensitive are my personal favorites. engorged is also a good one, especially when a character is afab and trans, since it is a word commonly used for dicks it creates a nice gender euphoric narrative

then for the lips, using lips is a bit tricky bc if you are mixing a certain section with kissing and fingering simultaneously for instance, it could create some confusion abt whether you are referring to the top set or the bottom set. i like folds, especially with actions like separate, unveil, uncover and so on.

then of course the hole itself. i dont refer to the hole often and instead mention that the other character slides their fingers/dick/toy(s) in and it is easy to understand that im referring to the hole.

fundamentally its very different from fingering an asshole since there are more parts, more area and more movement on the surface and not just inside the hole. from the clit down to right above the place where the asshole begins, sliding a finger along that vertical area, rubbing/drawing circles on/around/over the clit.

for an afab character, being played with or fingered is much more than just preparation for penetration, so i like describing it in heavy detail and reading it that way as well.

when it comes to penetration we have thrusting, slamming into, drilling, filling up, stuffing... unless it is a quickie or a rushed session, i try to have a progression of:

"slow thrusts" - "character A picks up the pace" - "A starts slamming into B"

important to note that the other character will have physical responses to being fucked harder. clenches around them, sucks them in, their walls tighten around them, they pulsate, twitch, shake, tremble etc. vaginal stimulation and orgasms are very intense and they affect you as a whole so its good to keep that in mind.

the readers will also enjoy not just seeing the penetration but also how much it messes up the character and alters their body temporarily.

during the entire thing i like mentioning that its warm bc it really is an oven in there. wetness is also very important. drenched, soaked, sopping wet, dripping, dribbling, overflowing are usually terms i use.

i dont think im missing anything but feel free to ask again if there is anything specific you need. i hope this was helpful take care <3

Fic: When the Lights Go Down (one-shot, Saren/Nihlus, retirement)

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

honestly it's hard to say, it kinda just. flowed like that. a lot of my writing style draws from very stream-of-consciousness stuff that gets its fingers really deep into the emotional state of the characters, so i wanted something that would invoke a sense of peace and calm, let the readers feel the same sense of "it's over, we can rest now" that saren has finally allowed himself to feel and settle into after so many years of finding himself again and settling down

3. What’s your favorite line of narration?

oooh that's hard, there's a lot of lines i like in there. i think i have to go with this:

i'm honestly a huge sucker for things where the characters go through absolute hell but finally get to go home, and have that soft epilogue, it always hits me right in the honey nut feelios. especially for saren and nihlus, who have been all across the galaxy and back again, when neither really had much sense of home with saren bouncing around between military bases with desolas as a kid after the death of their parents and with nihlus being a mercenary son of mercenaries and his mom shoving him to the military at 16 i have Fic Ideas About That too god i have so many emotions about martelian kryik and then spectres not having much time to find a place for themselves, finally getting to have somewhere peaceful and quiet to retire to when all is said and done..... feels good feels organic

4. What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

hmmm there's not a lot of dialogue in it but i do like this part from when nihlus is cooking dinner:

Nihlus turns to look, lifts his mandibles in greeting, and goes back to chopping. “You’re awake.”

“Much to the dismay of everyone else.” Saren’s mandibles flutter as he walks over. “I thought it was my turn to cook.”

“It is, but I didn’t want to wake you. We’ll swap with tomorrow night.”

Saren hums agreeably and leans on the counter next to the cutting board. “Is there anything I can help with?”

“No, thank you, I’m keeping it simple tonight. I wouldn’t mind some company, though.”

So that’s what Saren provides. Nihlus turns down the music so neither of them is struggling to be heard, and Saren sits at the kitchen table, and they talk. Some new topics, some old, some speculating on the future, some reminiscing about the past. Saren isn’t usually much of a conversationalist, but he’s always found it easy to talk to Nihlus.

i'm very partial to quiet, domestic bits in fic, showcasing how people are when there isn't big, dramatic things going on around them or even just whatever smaller plot is going on. it's about the gentle intimacy, it's about life moving on around the plot, it's about you still have to eat and breathe and sleep

5. What part was hardest to write?

transitions are always the death of me, honestly, especially the smaller flavor of "and then they went to x" that should only take up a small portion of the thing! the main problem i had was always like, i had the little events of the day in my head, i just struggled with how to get them moving between them. especially because the tone needed to say soft and contemplative, like they were letting the world move around them and just enjoying watching it go, so i couldn't just skip over the trip, either. AUGH transitions my old nemesis, if i'm ever lagging on a thing i guarantee the issue is trying to get a fucking transition done

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

so there are two like... ~times~ that i write. one is quick little notes in the notes app on my phone, and the stuff in there is like, dialogue lines i think of randomly during the day or vague ideas for other projects or just like a series of badly outlined actions that i want to use in the next part of whatever scene im working on

the other time i write is when i actually sit down at my computer with the intention to write. if im starting something new, i just kind of start. if i'm picking up in the middle of a project, i like to re-read/tweak what i've written so far to get me "back in the zone." then, i try to actually write some new stuff, which often turns into me cycling between writing a few sentences, checking tumblr, checking ao3, writing a few more sentences, staring at my screen, getting a snack, etc, etc, etc.

i there there are two parts about my writing that are cursed. first, is said notes

the other cursed part of my process is that, usually, i have absolutely no clue what i'm going to write until i'm actually writing it. i just kind of... feel out each scene and let the characters do all the work, which actually leads really well into the next question.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

my absolute favorite thing about writing is discovering the story alongside the characters. like i said, i don't really know what's going to happen before i sit down to write it. so the first draft is the closest i can get to getting to experience it like a reader and i LOVE IT.

it's my favorite thing to fall into those 'aha' moments when like, the plot just clicks or i end up discovering this really cool thought process or emotional reaction by it just happening.

also, i've always loved sharing my writing, but i love it even more now that i can be really authentic and write what i want to write because no one i know irl will ever read the stuff i've written.

29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry?

i draw a lot of my inspiration from music. for every long project i've ever worked, i've made a playlist of songs that fit the ~vibe~ of whatever im writing. so, for example, the playlist for Find Me has a lot of darker, more emotional songs that help get me in the right headspace.

unfortunately, since the way i write is so spur of the moment and inspiration driven, when the inspiration dries up i just kind of have to wait for it to come back lol... (maybe that's the truly cursed part of my process). however, i've found that listening to those playlists and re-reading the parts of the story i loved writing, and just allowing myself to be stuck for a few days usually helps kick my brain back into gear... eventually 😂

YES OMG THE POISONED DREAMS SERIES (from what ive read so far) IS SO SCRUMPTIOUS - the print copies have art in them and im just so obsessed teehee . summers fic and MA over the past few months have been the things i looked forward to in the then - futures . cova is srsly taking all of our hearts hostage w that blessed fic LOL its also real fun that the reader in fic has a hydro vision (this doesnt count as spoilers right ?) because ive always personally envisioned (haha) myself with one too . cova also has other works w alhaitham in it that are like kinda sorta connected to summers fic , my favorite being this one , i love the fic description LMAO

i've only read the summers fic until chap 4 (currently reading chapter 5) and it's so good. the mc and alhaitham's dynamic is so funny HAHA i keep laughing every time they have their stupid banters especially in the middle of fighting/interrogating people.

mc having a hydro vision is actually so nice too!! in chapter 4 at the part where they were sitting by the water and mc was playing around with the water by morphing them into dolphins and such was a nice addition to them. having a hydro vision sounds so fun and honestly i kinda want it too now LMAO

i'll also be sure to check out the other fic you've linked! cova's work with the summers fic is truly good and they're hella good at writing, so i'm not gonna miss the chance to not read their other works 🥹

and wow!!! i think you'll do a great job at writing again, and if you ever decide to get back to it, i would drop everything to read your work. no really, you're good at drawing, you make poems, you like solving out stuff, you make your own games— what can't you do???? you have such amazing skills and talents, i'd drop on my knees to see more of your work 😵‍💫

i won't deny that writing is such a big commitment and it takes such a huge effort to get back on your feet, and that's okay!! i think it's really neat that you have your own personal projects, i would say that's a total win!!!! hehe

google docs has this section where it lets you add comments in the words you've highlighted and i took every opportunity to make the silliest ones in some lines i've written for ma (would we consider this as proper annotations? i don't think i would...), here are some of them

i like adding my own author comments in my google docs because personally— it feels like a wattpad comment section, except that it's only visible to you, y'know? pretty silly, exactly, but i like annotating my own work for some reason... i think i'm just hella weird

Fic Review-1

This is going to be an ongoing series where I read, review, and generally fan about SPN fics that I've read. Because it's one of the deepest desires of my soul to discuss fics in detail with people, and fan and generally just be a nerd, like you would with a original story Unfortunally, I really, really want to do this with the authors, but I'm shy and reclusive, and don't feel comfortable doing so. So instead, I'm going to make a giant tumblr post to describe how much I love their work.

So, no crit in these reviews, just love

Today's victim: Karma's Gonna Come Collect Your Debt

Set: S13

Parings: gen

Length: 35k

Main character: Written to be Sam, but I would also argue Dean.

Summary:

Sam is dead. Dean isn’t processing.

And then Sam is not dead, Lucifer is there, and they’re suddenly on a deadline- thirty one hours before their single way home literally ceases to exist. Jack needs to be kept away from Lucifer, Sam needs to be kept away from Lucifer, they need to get thirty three people through a rift miles away, and that’s not even mentioning the fucking war currently being waged all over this- literally -godforsaken planet.

But Sam is alive, (alive, alive, Dean’s brother is alive), albeit having one continuous panic attack. This is fine.

(It is so, so not.)

(EVERYTHING BELOW THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!)

Reasons You Should Read This:

You know those writers that actually manage to take trauma into account, while pushing forward the story and not allowing this to get buried? this is one of those.

Sam and Lucifer content is just. mm. It's horrible, and it's treated like it's horrible.

Dean's anxiety is actually shown

Dean is traumatized by what happened to Sam by the vampires. his brother's throat gets ripped open, and Dean isn't like "oh, we're okay" after Sam walks up alive again, he spends the entire fic stressed about it

The pacing is lovely, no detail is spared

Lucifer shows up at the camp and no one goes "he's in chains, ergo, he's no longer a problem." He is the Devil, and he is treated as the untrustworthy, snake-like creature he is.

Cas isn't powerless, and he's not stupid.

Mary isn't amazing, but she actually tries to have some form of a bond. Sort of.

LUCIFER TORTURING SAM FOR 180+ YEARS IS NOT IGNORED!

Gabriel isn't useless or just there to please fans, he actually does something

The Cage is talked about.

Jack learns about the Cage

Upon learning about the Cage, Jack decides he doesn't want to talk to Lucifer anymore.

Dean is not ignorant to what Lucifer's presence is doing to Sam, or what it has done to Sam in the past. The fic implies that while Sam probably doesn't talk about it to Dean (Because PTSD and it makes sense), Sam isn't unaffected by what happened to him.

Dean is overly paranoid about anywhere he goes, trying to make sure that it's safe. (Such a small detail, but it always, always pleases me to read it)

Dean and Sam actually have a bond, and it's so very present and so very, very enjoyable.

Sam kills Lucifer

No Michael possession!

Protective!Dean

Sam speaks Enochian, which always gets a win for me.

++My Analysis of the fic:

Writing style and why it works:

The writing is very authentic to how I think Dean's brain works. It's anxiety riddled, fast with worry, and clearly shows the depth of how much hunting has affected him. Dean's brain isn't...smooth is the only word I can think of for this, it's not point A to B like other characters are and that makes sense. The writing focuses deeply on reactions, the way words are spoken, and physical sensations. Especially for Dean, there's little to 0 regard on how he's feeling. Which is something I totally see Dean doing.

But the reason that this frantic, almost skittering writing works is because this is a situation that you'd be thinking like that. Lines cut out because Dean, trauma riddled, doesn't want to think about something. There's jumping and processing and "well, crap" moments. My favorite thing about this author's writing style? they are very much into show not tell, which allows the readers to draw their own conclusions, but also makes it a much more enjoyable experience.

The focus on time, especially given these circumstances, was a beautiful detail to add. It kept a sense of pressure on the writing, because everyone knows that we are on a time limit.

There's also a deep sense of secrecy between Sam, Dean and Cas and the others in the story. They have and share information between the three of them that no one else has, and that makes sense because they have been working together for years.

But because, Sam and Dean especially, they are aware of each other, the characters don't feel like strangers. They know each other, and have been living with each other for a long, long time, and you can clearly see that with how attuned they are to each other. It was beautiful.

Character portrayal:

One of my favorite things about how the characters are portrayed here is that Sam is visibly uncomfortable in Lucifer's presence. Sam was disgusted by Lucifer, and when we're told that because Sam still has residual grace left in him and he can kill Lucifer, Sam is horrified. Sam is allowed to be as trauma riddled as someone who went through that would be. It's beautiful.

I also really appreciate how Dean is allowed to be freaked out about Sam literally getting his throat ripped out. Dean is allowed to not be this perfect fearless older brother. Dean is human here. He's a person with struggles who is concerned about Sam and others, but Dean still feels distinct.

I will also forever appreciate how the characters interact here. Everything is so subtle. If they're soft, it's not blatant, if they hate each other, then it's angry staring, but nothing feels explicit, and I love that.

Small details that make me go "mm.":

Dean always checking the "safety" of a room when they enter.

Mary not knowing about the Cage or John telling Dean to kill Sam

Sam's body language when he's around Lucifer

Upon 1 (one) glance at lucifer, Sam is completely aware that the chains have no effect on Lucifer and tells Dean

(pale face, frantic eyes, mouth open in an agonized scream)

Dean not knowing Maggie's name

Favorite scene and why:

This was hard, but man, the scene where Sam and Dean lay down to get some rest after Sam comes back to camp with Lucifer, and they just...don't sleep. There's something about this scene that just is so...deeply and utterly horrifying. Because Sam and Dean are supposed to be safe, right?

Sam's alive, Dean's alive, they're close to each other, neither of them are injured. They're fine.

And yet.

Yet...they're not. And you can feel that. Dean is tense and not-sleeping, and Sam is tense and not-sleeping. And there's something just so deeply haunting about that scene and I just. My love. <3

Favorite quotes:

“No,” Jack shook his head. “Why do they hate you?”

“It’s in me Dean, oh, god-” (“I’ve got demon blood in me Dean, this disease pumping through my veins-”) Dean shuts his eyes against the unwanted memory that had risen unbidden to the forefront of his mind. He firmly shoves it away.

"And now Sam was somewhere. Probably having a panic attack. Dean needed to find him."

"Sam, I know you will, I know you can, this isn’t me doubting you I swear. But, man, you don’t have to. You shouldn’t have to"

He hadn’t, not since the Cage. Maybe he couldn’t.

Because Dean will make time, damnit, because Sam shouldn’t have to f--ing schedule his panic attacks-

Dean can’t see it, but he knows his brother well enough to read the tightness in his shoulders and shifts in his elbows under the jacket that tell him Sam’s pressing into his palm scar again.

Because Sam never got angry anymore... not since the Cage.

“Heyyyyy Cassie! You’re back! Thank Dad.” Dean turned to see Gabriel trotting up to them, a scowling Lucifer in tow. “Take im’, please, he’s all yours.” He said, motioning to the Devil behind him."

Over all, I think that the story is beautiful. please be sure to leave a kudos and a comment if you read, because this author is dear to my heart and deserves them.

The Outsiders x West Side Story

I think it’s important to start with saying that, while this is my favorite all time movie, the racism of it needs to be recognized before I continue. The whitewashing & brown face in the movie is absolutely disgusting both then & now. It is not something to support or condone. I’m just making the post because I cannot help but draw so many similarities.

Tw// fighting & sexual harassment (breif mention) & death & one breif mention of suicidal thoughts

Ponyboy as Baby John:

I think this goes way deeper than them both being the youngest & newest in the gang. First of all, in the first scenes of both movies it begins with Ponyboy and Baby John getting jumped my multiple people of the other gang, & his friends coming to back him up. And shortly after that in wss, when the gang is talking about the rumble, someone brings up what they should do if knifes and chains are brought into it. & Baby John says “Why don’t we just forget the whole thing?” Which is similar to Ponyboy’s ideals around fighting. Especially fighting with weapons. Additionally, Baby John is the most hesitant about the Jet’s rules and lifestyle. He often questions the whole point of it. This is very similar to Pony because he states many times his own hesitance around being a greaser and only being viewed as such. They both look at the world through naive and pessimistic thoughts. Additionally, they are both very sensitive. In wss Baby John is found by A-Rab (who I see as Two bit which I will touch on later) crying by himself. He didn’t want anyone to see him cry after his friends death, but yet he is. This is very similar to Ponyboy’s feelings after the fire. Especially when he is walking around town with Two bit. Pony doesn’t want Two to see his broken up and sick he is, but he sees it anyway. And lastly, when Baby John is chewed out by Action (which I see as Steve) A-Rab is there to stick up with him, along with other members of the gang. Even though the both of them are the youngest of the gang they have strong feelings to prove themselves and show up.

Steve as Action:

I definitely see Steve as Action. First the obvious needing pointing out, Action isn’t that much of a fan of Baby John and Steve feels the same about Pony. But on a deeper character analysis point: the both of action & Steve are fueled by their anger and rage. They show this anger in ways of fighting and violence. In WSS one of the first scenes sees Action fighting off 2 sharks, and early on in the book Ponyboy mentions how Steve fought of 4 soc’s such a bottle. This can show how both their anger comes out in extreme ways when fighting. Steve even breaking three (?) ribs. Later on in wss, Action is ranting about how upset he is and how angry he is. And how he just wants “bust” meaning he wants to fight as a release. And he is calmed down(ish) by Ice, who I see as Soda. This is very similar to the scene where Soda and Steve are arm wrestling in the Curtis house and they are discussing why they like fighting, and Pony realizes that Steve’s motivation for fighting is hatred. To add on, Actions character is heavily influenced by Tybalt from Romeo & Juliet, where many connections can be drawn to Steve as well. Steve isn’t in the book a whole lot which makes it a bit harder to pull connections but basically; I see the two of them as having very similar set offs and coping mechanisms as well as intelligence and loyalty. As Action is the first to step up when Tony dies, similar to the way Steve scolded two bit for his joke after Dally’s death.

Darry as Ice:

I think first thing is first. At first I was so into Ice as Soda but after a lot more research and character diving: I decided on Darry. Both Darry & Ice’s protectiveness and care other the other members of the gang. Ice helping to keep the gang cool after the death of Riff, and Darry helping Pony after he gets jumped. While all of the gang in the outsiders is described as a good fighter, Pony mentions that Darry hasn’t lost a fight, which is similar because Ice is canonically the best fighter. In the movie Darry is the one who steps up to be the first to fight and to basically be the ring leader of the fight. And Ice was the one to take on Bernardo in the rumble scene. I feel like Ice and Darry are one of the closest accurate comparisons personality wise because Ice is all hard emotionless, he keeps his cool, and so does Darry. Both of them are the level headed smart ones if the group. They keep the group in line and from making too many rash decisions. Additionally, (tw rape mention) Darry & Ice aren’t as much a part of the gangs other hi-jinx. Like Dal, Two, Johnny, & Pony are at the movies & Steve and Soda are at the DX, Darry is alone doing his thing. Similar to when the gang in wss attempted to rape or assault Anita, Ice was no where to be found. I think both Ice and Darry have a better sense or maturity & cool headedness when it comes to life, especially with the gang.

Dally as Riff:

Hear me out on this one too lol. First of all, there are heavy draws to be made with Mercutio, Riff, & Dal. Especially their deaths. But I’ll be focusing more on their lives. Both Riff and Dally aren’t afraid of violence & in some cases, welcome it. Riff encouraging the use of weapons in the rumble, & Dally showing up to the rumble in the first place. As tough and heartless as they both want to seem, their soft can be shown through Tony (who I see as Johnny). Riff, in fear that Tony will get hurt in the rumble with Bernardo, steps up and takes the fight for him. Which leads to his death. Both Riff and Dally are willing to die “for Johnny” and Tony, their best friends. Additionally, Riff’s protection of Tony can be seen in Dally when he offers to help Johnny after Johnny kills someone, like Tony kills Bernardo. Both these friendships have roots in Dally & Riffs home life. Riff’s home life is discussed heavily in “Dear Officer Kurpkee” and Dally’s from Pony’s perspective. They both grew up without much family and love and without much of a home of their own, which leads to their standoffish characters. Especially since Riff feels a thankfulness to Tony for housing him, can be symbolic of Johnny feeling like Dally’s personal home. Anyway. When Riff is picking on Anybody about being in the gang, it is very similar to the way Dal picks on Cherry in the beginning of the movie. Both these characters have an independence to them, where they want to think they don’t need anyone for anything. They both believe they are alone in the world. And for that they are angry, and not afraid to die.

Two Bit as A-Rab:

I feel like this goes without mention but both A-Rab and Two Bit are described and seen as the clowns and the comedians of the group. They like to make the gang laugh and poke fun at things. Also they are both very aggressive. Not quite as aggressive as Steve & Action but pretty aggressive. This is seen through Two Bit being so willing to jump into a fight anytime (the scene with the broken bottle). And it is seen in A-Rab through him wanting to fight and getting really worked up over the death of Riff. Although the bond between both A-Rab and baby John & Pony and Two Bit; there are a good bit of connections between the friendship. A-Rab is very protective over Baby John whereas Two Bit is protective but more of in a good friend way. They are both really good guys and friends beyond their comedy. Getting back into their humor; in the outsiders movie Two Bit is scene lifting a girls skirt as a prank, showing he finds humor in the inappropriate and dirty. A-Rab makes a similar type verbal joke when Anybody is talking about fighting and joining the gang. Again, Two Bit isn’t mentioned much in the book or movie which makes it a bit hard to draw many more comparisons.

Johnny as Tony:

I know what you are thinking lol, shouldnt Pony be Tony? He is the main character after all. Hear me out: Johnny and Tony are so much alike personality wise. In the beginning, Tony talks to Riff about why he left the gang, it is a similar conversation as the one between Pony & Johnny in the lot were Johnny expresses his suicidal thoughts. I think this also goes without being said but Tony is based on Romeo, and aside from the love plot you can truly see a lot of similarities between these three characters. The main ones being their hearts good intentions. Johnnys good intentions come out in him saving Ponyboy, wanting to turn himself in to the cops, and him trying to save the kids from the fire. Tony’s good intentions are shown very similarly through him trying to fight to save Riff, not wanting harmful weapons in the rumble, and wanting to resolve things with words. Another thing is the way both of there characters died with so much regret and unfinished business. For Tony his regret was Riff’s death and his unfinished business was Maria. For Johnny his unfinished business was not living and his regret was around the same. But in the end they were ok to lie down their lives in a gallant way for what they believed in. Tony for the feud between the gangs to end, and Johnny for the lives of the kids he saved.

& im so so sorry but I can’t seem to see Soda’s personality & morals lining up with any of the characters in WSS I’m sorry ahhh. I hope you enough this anyway!!

Okay, time for my weekly rant so buckle up. The vocal stages were okay-I cant really remember them well because I watched them only once so take what I say with a grain of salt. Well I watched the Spark one once and I only got through half of the other one because I can’t stand ballads especially when there’s no interesting movement on stage to keep me engaged. Like it’s no fault of the members themselves or the song (I actually think their singing was incredibly beautiful and Eunkwang always sings like his wife just left him with the kids which is how you know he’s good) but I physically could not pay attention. That’s why I liked the spark stage a bit better-there was enough movement that I was able to focus on it. I really liked the use of the fire and the way they were walking in and out of the frame trading off parts so there weren’t too many awkward moments where the other members where on stage but not doing anything. The opening was gorgeous with each members being lit by the spotlight as they harmonize. So stagewise, I prefer Spark but vocally I think the other group was stronger. I love Spark and Taeyon is such an incredible vocalist (I mean the song is great because of her) so I don’t get why their delivery was, I don’t want to say weak, but subdued might be a better word. The only one that really stood out was Junhoe (but also that man couldn’t not stand out even if he tried, not with that incredibly rasp) and even he seemed to be holding himself back a bit. Though it was a bit slow it built up well to the two last choruses but still the first half could have been stronger. I know they were trying to draw it out to a strong pay off but I don’t really know if it was enough. And yes the suits were *chef’s kiss*. I think at this point in their career the FNC stylist has put SF9 in so many suits they’ve got it down to a science. Also I’m a sucker for those shirts with the triangle cut out and we got not one but two of them here.

Okay moving on, I’m not sure which group was next but I’ll talk about the Ikon stage. It seems like they finally realized that they’re on a performance based competition show so they decided to pull out the big guns. Love the little skit at the beginning (making sure people don’t forget that they’re YG), it was cute and refreshing. I really appreciated how they leaned into the campy acting in this stage (Stray kids did it too-just adding to the similarities between their stages). The song was meh but I also don’t really like BP especially not their recent stuff so it’s not a big deal. I would have preferred if they had gone with another song maybe Whistle or As If It’s Your Last or if they’d done a 2NE1 song like Chanwoo mentioned some point in the episode. I also think the stage would have been way smoother if they’d let Ikon and Lisa interact. Like if the boys appeared in her set after her section and then they all moved back to the first jungle set and then the whole thing turns gold and they did a dramatic outfit change (but with better jackets because theirs look like they came out of Party City). I also get what you mean about the dancers outfits not being that great. I actually really liked the outfits of Lisa’s dancers in isolation but they didn’t match with her or the set so they threw me off a bit. At least with the ikon members they were going for a modern look so the dancers outfits didn’t look that strange in comparison. Do you think it would have been better if they were white? How would you have improved then? The best way I can describe this performance was that it was a stage, stuff happened, I enjoyed myself but I don’t plan to revisit it anytime soon. Oh and we also have to give points for them cursing on national television not once but twice (at this point Jinwan deserves to say fuck).

Now to Stray Kids. So I feel like I need to preface this with the fact that I am actually a stray kids fan (I won’t call myself a stay because I don’t associate with the fandom) and though I’ve been really critical of them and their stages tend to be my least favorite I still have a soft spot for them (I got into this show because of them after all). I loved, loved, loved the intro with Felix (and yes his biggest flaw is that he’s Australian but I forgive him for it) and the way it immediately transitions into the chorus of DDD-the abrupt transition does fit really well with the Deadpool theme and I guess it is the closest they’re going to get to the feeling of yeeting themselves into traffic like in the movie. Interesting choice to start with the chorus. Now that I’m rewatching it I do really wish they stuck with the comic theme. I think that’s my gripe with SKZ-they have a lot of good ideas but they move on too quickly from them. Just pick a handful of things and sprinkle them throughout instead of cycling through them at breakneck speed. Like okay they’re doing Deadpool and he’s a comic character so keep the comic styling (it would have been a good thing to put in the projection behind Seungmin’s scene), maybe in the subway they could have had some fight choreo so the guns coming in at Lee Knows part aren’t out of nowhere (also someone please tell me they were trying to recreate the meme with the cat and the knives, please I need to know). I absolutely agree that them having a goal or an antagonist would have really helped the story along. I mean they literally have a spoken intro so why couldn’t Felix just tell us who they were fighting (and I’m pretty sure in the movie Wade tells us he’s trying to kill Francis in that scene sooo). As always they put more focus on the rappers (please can we get less Changbin and more Seungmin, Jeongin, or Lee Know or at least give Felix more parts). Seungmin was the real mvp of this stage and he had the best outfit (I think it qualifies for Hanya’s best gay little outfit list). Personally I with they hadn’t gone with Gods Menu again. I’ve been hoping that they would perform My Pace (and maybe remix it with their B-side TA off their Go Live album) because that would be such a fun stage. Again, I enjoyed myself but I won’t revisit it anytime soon. At this point the only groups I actually look forward to are BTOB and SF9 (they’re doing fucking Move and I don’t know whether to be excited or terrified-there’s a clip of Taeyang covering Move from a variety show or interview and I think he does it really well so I know at least one of them can pull it off). Again thanks for creating space where I can info dump and I hope I said something of interest to you!

i think you wrote more than me!! i love this, im gonna put my response under a cut im not being super obnoxious on the dash.

i get that the mayfly stage would be not as visually stimulating for people and usually i would count myself in with that crowd because i love a good spectacle but i think because i watched the spark stage first and my colour perception is sometimes weird so when there's a lot of movement with very little colour variation my tiny pea brain loses track of whats happening really quickly. especially with red. so it was kind of difficult for me to pay attention to the spark stage in the second half. also i absolutely HATE watching people flub on stage because it brings up such visceral secondhand feelings that i couldn't even watch the stage when i started the full episode today.

i love a good suit but you know what i would also love: sf9 in more costume variations. tbh im just getting nitpicky about it because im a costume designer down to the core and i got trained by a designer who specialized in doing avant garde costuming so i tend to skew more towards wild than reserved. it looks like the move stage wont be be suits so ill take it, but oh man to do i want to see some really crazy stuff. which i know they'll never do because idols have to be pretty at all times or the fans get mad but oh i want it so badly.

do you mean how i would improve ikon's backup dancers outfits or lisa's? here why dont i do both. for lisa's dancers i would have just done away with that harness shape all together, its almost exclusively a military style. the jackets by themselves would have been fine but really what they should have done was put them in something that matched the gold but contrasted enough to give them shape. by having at least her dancers in all black on a gold stage there was a lot of "haha look at me do a duck walk because lets throw in some voguing for spice." they could have gone with a mesh bodysuit idea similar to what she was wearing or even just different colour coats. as for ikon's backup dancers, firstly pants. not black. or even a longer skirt. genuinely a part of the reason why i dont watch girl group content is because i HATE the hem length of the shorts they make everyone wear. words cannot describe how much i hate that cut. kpop is so obsessed with showing off women's bodies and especially their legs but they do it in the LEAST flattering way possible because it "can't be too risqué," just shoot me now. i hate it. i hate it so fucking much. yea yea everybody was on cocaine in the 80s whatever but at least they were all wearing french cut bodysuits so their legs looked fantastic. stop interrupting the lines!! anyways. pants so the only section of skin showing is thigh to mid calf, especially because they weren't even doing any fun legwork! if they really wanted to keep the full sleeve bodysuits they shout have done them in a fabric with a texture or external embellishments, like a patent/vinyl or sequins/rhinestones. something to catch the stage lights so we can actually see the shape of the limb. but the easiest way to fix it is literally just cut the arms off the bodysuits. stages are lit to show off skin, sometimes the best way to have something be seen is just to have it bare.

i agreed skz cycles through ideas way too fast, they need to just pick a couple and stick them out through the stage instead of just adding more and more different ones throughout. also ok good someone else noticed that there is just...so much changbin. we don't need that much changbin. i know there's other boys in the group let them do something! also im pretty sure theyre not recreating the cat knife meme but actually the promo image from john wick chapter two, which i also could have sworn i saw a deadpool version of as an instagram ad back when movies were happening, but now that im looking for it it doesn't exist so i might be crazy.

im excited for the move stage but im also trepidatious because...its move. i have NO clue what the concept is from the previews so i just hope its weird enough to take it enough out of the taemin context for me to enjoy it.
