"Love, or Something Ignites" might just be the best goyuu fic ever!!! let me explain!!! (Thoughts and Review)

Some quick context but cuz this review was already going to be pretty long without my flashback sequence so pls scroll down to the red text if you don't want to hear my history of opinions with JJK and its ships.

I've been deep in the goyuu tag since the beginning of the year, which I found kind of strange at first since I watched S1 way back in 2022 and did not give much of af about the whole show.

I kicked my feet a bit at SukuFushi,  tried to like it more, and even searched out a couple of fics but they just weren't giving AT ALL.

At the start of 2023 I watched jjk 0 and I was kinda hyped to get back into the show, but my shipping heart still ached for something to latch onto so I went on AO3 and picked up the first fic I found. Surprise, surprise, it was a goyuu fic featuring role reversal. I wouldn't say I liked it but it did tickle something in my brain I would have explored if I wasn't neck deep in my bakudeku era at the time.

Then S2 happened and it all just sorta clicked for me. Before then I'd mainly been a SukuIta believer, I didn't frequent their fics but I DID gobble up their twincest doujins like I was starved when I had the time. 2nd cour of S2 coming out practically sealed Goyuu for me, I'd always felt there was a bit of something I saw between them but Yuuji screaming out for Gojo in that last frame...just...*chef's kiss*

I didn't go back to rewatch S1 where a majority of their reactions were like some diehard fans would but the clips and screencaps I've come across now and again are enough to solidify for me that yes! They are made for each other!! (Hope the wrong stsg fans don't find this ◉‿◉)

I'd really love to go on and on about their dynamic but this was supposed to be about my February fic of the month, "Love, or Something Ignites" by lainebee.

Like I said, I've been deep in the tags and the only others I think that come close to this one are "No Sanctuary" by eddie01 and both world's sequels.

Now I'm not saying there aren't other good ones, like I'm just halfway through the hundred and something AO3 pages of their ship tag, so there's a lot I've yet to see. Still, this is a sorta subjective review and I just hope to spread the word of this masterpiece and maybe meet others who've read it so we can fan together in the comments.

(Now that's all out of the way, there will be mild spoilers and also warnings for; omegaverse, mpreg, and voyeurism so let's hop to it (✿^‿^)

The fic is set in a historical Japan au where Yuuji and Sukuna are brothers, with Sukuna being much older and ruling over a kingdom in the south. Thing is, he's constantly at war with the Gojo clan cuz these two mfs are just built like that in every verse. Shit happens and they come to a truce and as a sign of goodwill Sukuna offers Yuuji, his recently presented omega brother, as a gift (I honestly thought Yuuji was like 16 or 17 but he's 19 so like whatever idc (╥﹏╥)

"So what's the problem?" you might ask, well aside from the obvious marriage of convenience plot, Gojo doesn't give a fuck, he's still hung up on Geto (kinda tho, it's complicated but they aren't in love) and he's pretty much intended to go through it for show.

But that's not the end; not only do our boys have no feelings for each other and have never even met, but THING IS... Sukuna has demanded a public consummation cuz he's a bastard like that and we love him for it. Worry not there's no fucking on a stage for everyone to watch...just fucking in a 'room' for a handful of witnesses to watch from behind those dresser screen things (vocab not working lol).

The fic is definitely kinda long and tho there are some slow-burn vibes a lot of it essentially takes place in ONE FUCKING DAY. My first assumptions going into this were, "pacing issues???" and "oh the author is going to either insta love them, make them fuck and spend the rest of the fic doing fluff, or they will fuck with some angst then spend the rest falling in love."

Color me surprised when yeah, they did fuck but that was one or two chapters from the last of about nine.

You expect this kind of shit to feel rushed as fuck but the writing is so fucking divine that you never feel like putting it down. There's always so much going on but time is never wasted dwelling on one subject for too long, it's fast, it's funny, and the characters and setting are constantly giving the energy you know and love from the original show but probably two times better.

One of the things I noticed a few GoYuu writers struggle with is accurately reflecting Gojo cuz he's actually an enigma and arguably one of the most complex characters in the show with a broad range of emotions. He doesn't particularly fit one kind of vibe whereas for everyone else you can pick one or something close to it. Gojo on the other hand goes from one end of the spectrum to the other pretty quickly and that's super hard to capture and explore, especially when it comes to the shorter smutty fics (Not complaining too much tho, I live for the E rating.)

I love the direction the author chose to go with him, and it feels so true to his character, his immature but his teasing doesn't feel over the top or come off as exaggerated. His status as the strongest is just told but shown to us with the way he behaves and I like that we get instances of him getting work done despite knowing he's a rebel. It reminds us that yeah, he's working to make the clan the way he wants but he's just going along with what he has to in true Gojo fashion.

Yuuji, is totally something else, it's implied that he actually killed people...and I don't think we got a paragraph of him feeling guilt over it but that's somewhere toward the end so forget it. Yuuji is the absolute sweetest here and I adore every scene he's in along with how bratty he tends to be with Gojo. It's not frequent and most of the time he's pretty respectful but when he's not...Yeah. His inner thoughts and his conversations with most of the other characters really bring life to the story and you literally feel you're right there with him through it all.

Then there's the smut...oh. my. fucking. GOD. It's absolutely delicious. If you were iffy about it being omegaverse, I beg you to actually consider it cuz all probably more than four thousand words of it are fucking precious.

I had no idea I'd be into sex with some commentary when I began reading but the conversation from the characters picked was spot on and even added to the spicyness.

My favorite part is when Yuuji moans like a fucking pornstar and the zenin guy (forgot his disgusting ass name) goes "The boy is a whore."

Like boohoo bitch just say you wish you were getting all that, I wish I was (╥﹏╥)

If you're still iffy about the Omegaverse trust me it's not that big of a deal, the focus is mainly on Gojo and Yuuji trying to find some mutual ground to get on so the consummation isn't fucking awkward but by talking, joking, and getting to know each other something even more starts to blossom.

There are definitely traces of insta love but I personally see it as a weird mixture of attraction and possessiveness but this book is just like the prelude to the main course which is the second part in the series which I'm not done with yet but fucking hell...all the intrigue and tension that you will find in Love, or Something Ignites, gets doubled with more angst and mystery in the second fic, along with goyuu being stupid as well as stupidly in love.

So give it a try, and if you have, let me know what you think. I'd usually say where the tiny flaws are but for this book there are none...unless you count Yuta being Maki's mate instead of Rika's but that's my personal hill to die on. so the most recent fics I’ve read on my kindle are the first two parts of the time has come today series by teen_dean (@urne-buriall on tumblr I think). and these are so good. I’ll elaborate more in my fic review but I am excited to share the cover I developed for my kindle collection because I really enjoyed going through different iterations of this cover. I’m just posting the cover I landed on for now, but I think I will share some of the other iterations which include design choices that I cut and edited at length(in another post or reblog later).

fic review: I’m not always one to love casefics, watching cases passively on screen is one thing, but I can’t always immerse myself in a case to keep interest. I’m more one for character dynamics and the dynamics here are so interesting and introspective and funny I can’t get enough.

When it comes to the characterizations the author really nails it too. They are so close to canon that when I inevitably dissociate from atmospheric chemistry seminars and start thinking about supernatural, I can’t remember if something happened in their fic or on screen. I love these characters and teen_dean obviously does too because they treat their characterization so carefully. The cover I designed references scenery and plot points related to the case part of the fic, but I wish I could have incorporated the deep and thoughtful character analysis that is part of this fic.

And the imagery, particularly the west coast imagery, is. so. good. Very rarely am ever I struck with the desire to draw imagery described in writing, but it struck me at multiple times throughout this. most noteably the cas in the orchard paragraph highlighted in one of my pics towards the end of young hearts (will it be my first castiel fan art??? I certainly hope so.) chef’s kiss.

I really thought I would take a break after finishing young hearts, but I wasn’t ready to not know what happened to teen dean and past-cas in the next fic so I’m reading the rules of have changed today now and I have no regrets.

some notes on the cover design: I’m not sure this translates to the end result, but the glowing text of the title/author/everything-else was meant to represent the flickering lights of neon signage you might see in a dive bar. The description of Schaffer’s bar at the beginning and end of the first part is rich and another example of really capturing the feeling of canon (which I should mention is something the author does really well through scenery too). I don’t think I necessarily got the colors right (I initially imagined a larger color palette), but I’m feeling pretty good about the glowing aspect of it. In a print book format, I’d like all of the red to be metallic embossed.

Its very faint, but I included the silhouette of a mountainscape with silhouettes of dark watchers watching in the background. I think you have to zoom in to see them though. So I included a zoomed in image of two of the dark watchers. See if you can spot the other two!!

The last thing I wanted to mention is that I know arimaspians are typically one-eyed (on their heads). I took a creative liberty and put an eye on the hand.

'We Go Down Together' follows Sirius as he pieces together the last three years that led up to the supposed deaths of his brother and his muggleborn wife. Through Sirius' eyes, we find out what exactly Hermione was up to during her redo at Hogwarts, from year four on, and how her influence has changed the timeline.

I personally love the angle the author has chosen to take. The story isn't caught up in the day to day activities of how the main pairing gets together, but rather chooses to focus on the larger moments and the feelings behind the actions.

This coupled with the artistry of the writing is a perfect example of why us fan fiction writers do what we do.

obsessed with this fic i read last night that i was very trepidatious to get started on bc like. the conclusion i have come to on mxtx couples is wangxian is the only one i'm REALLY into being parents (as they are. canonically. also that breeding kink) (as they are. the only pair of reasonable ppl. lbh and hc are NOT reasonable and tbh i don't think too highly of sqq on that scale either)

and anyway this fic. (hualian mpreg) took me by the face and said, i get you. i understand and to some extent share your reservations. we are going to interrogate and explore that so good. also we are going to explore so many intense and uncontrollable emotions from your faves. also hua cheng is going to suffer.

and i have been just. turned inside out by this. picked up and twisted like a dishtowel being wrung out. i'm havin a goddamn time about it a day later. i wanna reread it immediately. i don't even go here. got damn.

A Drarry reader reads Manacled

Ok, I’m sure there’s been plenty of reviews of this story. But I kind of want to do something maybe a little different. I’m not a Dramione shipper. I only ever read Dramione if a third person is involved—preferably Harry. I love poly stories and the dynamics that arise when three people come together. When I choose stories to read, I also prefer queer characters and queer storylines because that is what I enjoy and can relate to. And mostly my stories are male centric, simply because when I read I want to escape common tropes such as sexism or weaker female characters being saved by a hero. I’ve been fed that story all my life, growing up on Disney or whatnot. I want to read stories where the guy is allowed to be weak and vulnerable, and is allowed to express feelings. I want to read stories where he is the maiden in distress.

So, with all that being said and my personal preference, I still decided to pick up this story. Why? People would not shut up about it.

All right. So let’s try this out. Right away I saw the noncon tag and was like hmmm, kay. I was skeptical because if this story romanticized rape I was going to nope right out of it. It’s fine if it’s like a consensual noncon  roleplaying scene between a dom/sub kinda thing. It’s fine if it’s presented as legitimate trauma a character endures and the steps they take to overcome such an ordeal. I can read dark materials if that is the way it’s shown…so I was willing to give it a chance and see.

And I’ve read 10 chapters in one night. I could read more, but I felt the need to write my thoughts. Please note, I do not know anything about this story. I don’t know how it ends. Ahead will be spoilers and a discussion of the beginning of the story. It’s all my speculation at this point. So, here we go.

I dunno if it’s the years and years of Drarry I’ve read. I’d consider myself a veteran Drarry shipper at this point. I started reading and writing Drarry when I was 13 and I’m 34 now. So yeah, twenty years of stories. So maybe because of this, I’m going to say it: Draco Malfoy isn’t evil.

Let’s recap what’s happened in the first ten chapters with Draco. He apparently killed Dumbledore, though witness accounts are blurry at best. Everyone’s vision’s were obscured at the time it happened. This leads me to believe maybe he didn’t actually do it. Maybe he hesitated, similar to how he did in canon. Why would he do this? Or why would they use the smoke to conceal it?

I think it was all in Dumbledore’s plan to position Draco as Voldemort’s right hand man. Killing Dumbeldore immediately put him in a high regard towards Voldemort, and he’d have no reason to question Draco’s loyalty at that point. Dumbledore’s cursed hand was also mentioned, which also leads me to believe the horcruxes are still present in this story. Does Draco know about the horcruxes? Is Draco the spy in this story instead of Snape? I think he is.

If he’s the spy, then that leads me to my other point. I think there’s a history between him and Hermione. I think together they were trying to come up with a plan to destroy the Death Eaters and Voldemort from the inside. Yet somehow their plan went awry and they lost. Hermione was captured. I think this knowledge that she has of Draco being the spy is the one thing she’s had repressed in her memories. Inside these memories are the plan they came up with together to defeat Voldemort once and for all.

The memories though—it’s all said that she had them locked away by trauma. And perhaps that’s true. But I want to think maybe also, Draco put a memory block on her to protect themselves. Maybe this was his last act he did before Hermione got shut away for all those months. I’m not entirely sure of this theory just yet, but maybe it’s possible.

The food while she’s in confinement—it’s got Draco’s name written all over it. Umbridge left her there fully expecting to discover her months later as a corpse. Draco kept her alive. Draco fed her.

Draco’s marriage to Astoria could have been out of family obligations. I don’t have much else to say about it. Does Astoria know Draco has carried a torch for Hermione all this time? Possibly. It would certainly explain more of the bitterness. Yeah sure, maybe it’s also just cause she’s going to carry Draco’s child and she can’t…but I feel like there’s more there…

The killings—it mentions Draco as the Reeve and how quick and emotionless he is murdering people one right after the other. Unpopular opinion, but I feel like he’s so quick with it because it’s out of mercy for these people. Draco knows that any woman caught by the Death Eaters will potentially be brought up in the repopulation program, or tortured to death. The men will die painfully and slowly if not for him. Him using the killing curse as swiftly as he does is an act of mercy he inflicts on them, knowing that they truly have no means of escape and this is their best outcome to avoid the suffering. 

The one thing that sealed the deal for me and made me realize Draco wasn’t evil was his physical reaction to Hermione having a panic attack outside. His fingers are clenched around the newspaper and he’s livid. The way this writer describes this scene is brilliant though, because Hermione thinks this anger is directed at her. I think it’s anger directed at Umbridge though. And in this moment he’s seeing the full extent of how messed up Hermione has become due to the confinement. Instead of forcing her to keep going or take a walk, he tells her to sit down and calm down.

It’s also later in the story he’s angry once more, when he’s ordered to walk with Hermione outside. He poses it as having another chore (“walking his dog”) but I think in reality, he’s angry because he knows this is hard for Hermione. He doesn’t want to stress her anymore than she already has.

Yeah, but he raped her. Ok…and on that…my thoughts.

The rape in this story is not romantic. But it’s not much of anything else either. It’s violating, yes. But there is a clinical feeling to it. Draco barely touches her—almost as if the idea of this disgusts him equally as well. Which, yes, it probably does. But not for the reason they want you to think.

I don’t think he’s disgusted it’s her—a mudblood. I think he’s disgusted that he has been ordered to rape her. He’s disgusted by the system he’s a part of and the role he has to play to keep his role as spy a secret. He’s disgusted that he has to inflict this harm on the woman he cares about. It’s the same way he kills people—he does it quickly, with no emotion, to inflict the least amount of damage as possible.

All right, but he literally mind fucks her later. Yes, another violation. Something he’s also been ordered to do. And it’s convenient, yes? He will know the moment she cracks and his cover could potentially be blown. He’s not ready for that to happen just yet. So he plays it off like the asshole she thinks he is, but it doesn’t all add up. There are bits of Draco’s humanity that shine through but it’s subtle enough for readers and Hermione to not really notice it.

Ok…my only other theory, which I’m kinda going on a hunch here…I think Draco’s feeding her birth control. He controls what she eats and drinks and it’d be so easy to slip something in her food. Yes, she’s only had one month of trying to conceive. It is very possible she could get pregnant later. A lot of women don’t get pregnant in the first month, but a lot do from the first moment of unprotected sex. I’m relieved she’s not pregnant yet. But I think there’s a reason for this, and I think Draco’s got his name all over that too…

But that’s just a hunch. I’ll see. I’ll probably do another review for the next ten chapters, see how wrong I was lol. If you comment, please keep it spoiler free for me. These were just my observations while reading. Thanks (:

I owe you a hearty comment full of praise and love and a generous helping of quotes from all the bits that made me laugh, but in the meantime I wanted to pop in and say THANK YOU, I absolutely loved 'Tell Me Something True'. It has rattled something in my chest- I want to laugh and cry and also pet my cats a whole bunch.

Definitely wouldn't be heartbroken if there was a follow-up, but this felt like having the perfect bowl of soup. I love how gentle and precious and warm it is, even through the ache and sorrow and pain.

I just really really enjoyed it and really really needed to tell you that as soon as possible

Thank you!! I feel like the premise for this one makes it sound like it's a really dark fic (and there are some parts where it maybe is a bit like that), but I wanted to balance that out with these softer, more domestic moments.

i just assumed that in any universe, james and sirius were best friends. and i’m sure they will be, but starting by the fic without that was HEARTBREAKING

2. James loving regulus’s french accent and already being a simp. jesus he’s pathetic.

4. i’m really worried about remus now. not about his safety, but i’m worried he will have a lack of a role in the story. and i love him, so he needs to be in this story more, i’m praying.

A Collage (of Yelling)

I saw someone do something like this to advertise their fic- they linked the fic, and then put in a little collage of various comment snippets. I can’t find the post to show off- someone please do let me know if you’ve seen that, I want to credit them. 

Either way, my Hollow Knight post-Black-Egg-Temple fic (linked here) has 209 comment threads on it. I���ve gone through and found some bits. These bits were mostly chosen for entertainment/intrigue value out of context- a lot of my favorite comments didn’t get in. 

Got some good reviews there, I think. Anyone wanna see the collection I have of Discord screenshots from folks yelling at me about this fic?  (Seriously though, thank all of y’all who comment, yell in the tags, whatever- I love it. Really helps keep the writing muse going, too.)

Oh no baby do not think like that”.  Augh. just, augh. / ...except that bit at the end. ...except that last sentence, ‘cause, yeah. / *hides face in hands* this has been exhausting for everyone, apparently. Hollow knight or: when you are so touch starved that your standards for touch that you want are somewhere in the abyss that has spawned you.  Whatever the FUCK happened in the last section is Oh Lord Oh God What The Heeeeeellll Ohhhh My Goood No Waaayyyy... Will be waiting for the next chapter STARING at ao3...

i was so relieved to read this that i accidentally put my phone in airplane mode trying to respond “it is startled out of its pleasant memory-” pLEASANT???? PLEASANT!?! Hollow no. HOLLOW NO- / why does this for some reason almost feel like fluff.  My urge to keysmash at you is strong Just. God. Everything about this is so fucked in so many ways.

Something about this line just makes me want to. Maybe stab the king in the chest. Repeatedly. And then throw them off a bridge. Idk Actually many things about this chapter make me want to stab the king in the chest repeatedly and then throw them off a bridge. Because *holy shit* Hollow, honey, you have so much trauma. OMG ghost, what have you done [stressed emoji] Okay then. Well. Um. That’s a lot to happen.  God it’s such a mess Ah yes, the eldritch nonsense trying to approximate a living creature, my beloved PK you ass. PK you absolute ASS get over here I wanna hit you with something heavy-  oh / im immediately punched in the face okay thank you for that Right off the bat I am mildly excited about this chapter solely because you played with text formatting and that makes my serotonin levels rise. I don’t know why but thank you for that.  CONFUSION SOUP I’M FHDHDJFKFKGH I wanna join the cuddle pile :<<< let me in [holding Hollow gently in both hands] / I will get you all the fresh-dirt-scented soap Fucking superb you funky little vessels. Oh boy! Spiraling!

Oh this chapter hurts ‘specially bad. Because it wasn’t enough to be possessed and neglected and quite literally tortured and driven insane, now we gotta have more medical issues and amnesia-  I fuckign cried at this one, oh my god. Pain is always a tearjerker, but it’s nothing compared to someone who’s been in pain so long finally getting that first big moment of *realizing they’re wanted* and *heard* and *healing*  And I gotta say, (this is gonna sound bad) I really do love Hollow’s victim blaming. Or how it’s written. I love how you write characters in pain <333 “Oh, just a quick chapter to read before bed,” I thought to myself. “I will enjoy it and feel a normal and manageable level of emotions about it.” / ...Thanks for making me all teary in the wee hours, now I’ll never get to sleep! (...I mean this as praise.) Oh. Oh Hollow. So wrapped up in the need to be useful. So incapable still of seeing that their own gut-wrenching familial love might be returned in kind, whether they have some designated purpose for their existence or not.  Yeah. Relieved. / Oh, Hollow... You have already left kudos here :) [three times] / Have I ever been told the definition of insanity?  honestly the body horror was the /least/ disturbing thing in this chapter. not to say! that it was not disturbing - even then, less the horror and more the. context. i want to punch TPK. into a lake. that is on fire.

First comment of my first reread, and MAN. This opening hits just as hard the second time.  Keep in mind Hollow Knight was made by Australian people Hollow 100% deserves a nice date at the palace if they so wish. anyway, I feel very emo about Hollow, all the time.  HOLLOW IS LETTING THEMSELVES HAVE WILL, LET’S GOOOOOO Ghost is doing Fine:tm:, Hornet is doing Fine:tm:, Hollow is *actually* doing pretty well Good news! Hollow is an emotional wreck!  Hornet is doing sooo normal right now (lying).

TLDR; amazing story, glorious update, poor Grimm, I Am Desperate For Shield Lore, someone please tell Ghost it isn’t their fault, the entire gaggle of siblings needs a group hug, I Am Going To Put The Pale King’s Corpse Through A Shredder, and Hornet needs another good cry.
