Cold: So do you... like, exclusively fight shrinking heroes? Is that the gimmick? Giganta: My dating preferences don't map to the whole gang's gimmick. Honestly I guess we'll take whoever we can get. I can tell you one thing. There's no way in hell we're fighting Elastiwoman if I can help it. Cold: The... strchy, grow-tall lady from the Doom Patrol? Giganta: Yeah, her. Cold: What's the big deal? Issues with the Doom Patrol villains? Giganta: No, but if I can avoid having to deal with them, all the better. Have you SEEN the people she fights? Makes the villains from Gotham look sensible. Cold: So what's the issue with her? Giganta: The issue is, fitting gimmick or not, fighting her is a pain in the ass because that woman has got the absolute most volatile, vicious temper I've seen in my goddamn life, and even if you OBVIOUSLY have got a battle of giants theme going on, the second she gets even slightly impatient or annoyed she's going to grow to half a mile tall and kick you so hard that you'll end up leaving atmosphere. Cold: That is INCREDIBLY specific. Is this from personal experience. Giganta: Maybe. I'm thinking about sending a apology basket to Wonder Woman for all the times we fought, having a giant shoeprint scar in your gut hurts like hell and now I feel bad for doing that to her, maybe.

Billboard have updated their charting rules again and it seems they are again allowing album bundles, although in a limited capacity called “fan packs”.

Thanks for sharing - that's really interesting and I have a few different thoughts.

The first is that I saw this today and briefly checked it out, but didn't read it fully and didn't know the date it started. Then I saw the date Taylor as releasing Speak Now and thought - I bet it starts at the beginning of July (and it does - Taylor is releasing Speak Now in the second week of the new rules). For Taylor this will mean there's no doubt that all the rereleases will be huge.

She might have faced a bit of a problem in that she has started with two of her biggest albums and both debut and Speak Now are more challenging to have a huge impact with. She definitely wouldn't want headlines about the re-records becoming less successful (even though they could still fulfil their main purpose if they didn't open at number 1). I'm sure she had many strategies to solve that problem - but also will definitely take advantage of any changes to Billboard changes.

Beyond Taylor - what I find so interesting about this is that on some level it's Billboard admitting what an album is now and what it's not.

One of the things that I find so interesting about the charts - is that they really demonstrate the reality that you can't measure something and report about that measure without distorting it.

The reason Billboard rules keep changing is because they're trying to limit the ability to game the system. In particular, one of their goals is to make sure they measure breadth of feeling not just depth of feeling. It's something that endlessly frustrates fans - a pretty big part of fandom's belief system and operating mode is that fans depth of feeling matter. But Billboard (and charts more generally) the songs that most people are listening to - rather than the songs that a large number of people are listening to a lot.

But what that means for an album is pretty complex in this period in history. Because in general a lot of people aren't listening to albums, just individual songs. The album still means something to fans of particular artists, and it still means something to those who are invested, but it's hard to measure broad support for albums, because albums don't have a broad meaning.

This is a problem for the music industry, which is very invested in the album as an art form - and isn't prepared to give that up. For a long time those involved in charts have held onto moments when a wider public might engage with an album (thinking about how Rod Stewart beat both Harry and Stormzy to number 1 in the UK album charts in 2019). They've wanted the charts to measure people's engagement with the album as music.

But fans engage with the artist as much as (usually more than) the album - and they're the people spending money. That's why artists were so fond of bundling and pushes to turn everything else into album sales - because that was the best way to do it. Charts pushed back, but ultimately artists and fans proved very good at turning physical albums into merch - and the division seems arbitrary.

What Billboard allowing bundling suggests is conceding that the album itself does not have broad support, so the only thing worth measuring is the depth of support an artist has. It's an interesting transition in the music industry.
