   I  do  genuinely  think  that  while  Chrollo  is  now  aware  of  the  fact  certain  people  may  be  more  inclined  to  choose  his  life  over  their  own  /  the  safety  of  the  spider  ,  he  doesn’t.  .  .  .  truly  grasp  it  or  rather  doesn’t  grasp  the  why  of  it  ?  Chrollo  cares.  He  cares  deeply  about  his  spiders  ,  enough  that  they  are  the  only  ones  he’ll  cry  over.  Even  if  they  may  disappoint  him  with  certain  choices  at  times  ,  he  still  cares  and  will  care  even  after  they’re  gone.

   But  he  will  always  put  the  spider  first.  No  matter  how  much  he  cares  about  you  ,  no  matter  how  close  ,  he  will  always  put  the  overall  wellbeing  of  the  spider  first.  Romance  ,  friendship  , whatever.  The  Spider  is  his  #1  priority  in  all  circumstances.  Chrollo  will  choose  what  is  rationally  the  best  option  for  the  rest.  If  saving  his  life  is  top  priority  ,  so  be  it.  If  it’s  not  ,  then  it’s  not.  A  second  ,  third  ,  last  priority.  It  doesn’t  matter  to  him.  He  expects  the  spider  to  always  be  number  one  ,  but  people  don’t  always  function  by  logic  when  emotions  are  involved.  Which  Chrollo  understands  as  an  OBSERVER  but  not  by  EXPERIENCING  it  because  he  just  doesn’t  function  like  that.  

   The  idea  his  life  matters  more  to  others  is  a  strange  and  foreign  concept.  He  understands  Hisoka’s  value  on  his  life  being  in  the  potential  death  because  that’s  a  specific  motive.  He  understands  people  caring  because  he  was  counting  on  others’  (  like  Kurapika’s  )  caring  being  exploited  when  it  wasn’t.   But  that  his  own  life  and  identity  matter  more  in  the  eyes  of  others  than  it  does  to  him  is  .  .  .  baffling.  It  doesn’t  make  sense.   (  Which  MAKES  sense  because  emotions  are  Messy™.  )  A  lack  of  self-identity  also  probably  adds  to  his  confusion.  He  doesn’t  have  any  desire  to  die  but  he’s  accepted  death  long  before  the  Troupe  was  formed.  So  it  always  surprises  him  when  he’s  chosen.

   But  even  if  it  might  disappoint  him  ,  he  won’t  belittle  or  look  down  on  someone  choosing  him.  As  long  as  overall  the  Spider  is  okay  ,  each  of  his  spiders  is  capable  of  making  their  own  decisions  and  he  respects  that  regardless  of  if  he’d  agree  or  disagree.  He  doesn’t  agree  with  Nobunaga’s  vendetta  personally  as  he  was  fine  with  just  leaving  ,  but  he  accepts  it.  It’s  a  similar  idea.   He’s  grateful  ,  naturally  ,  but  alas.  It’s  one  of  those  things  that  slips  through  his  fingers  ,  one  of  his  inabilities  to  understand  himself  or  how  he  is  in  others  eyes  in  some  ways.

Forgive the silly premise but I saw a meme video that inspired this question, feel free to ignore. The meme was Anakin and Palpatine in that "Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plageius the Wise?" scene but Anakin answers; "Oh yeah that's the story of the the Sith Lord whose apprentice cowardly killed him in his sleep. It was a real eye-opener for me, it taught me that you should never, under no circumstance whatsoever, trust a Sith."

With that ridiculous background out of the way my question is what do you think Anakin would do if he came to the conclusion that he absolutely couldn't trust Palpatine to save Padme or help him learn something that could? What do you think he'd do in that kind of situation?

I mean, my first instinct is to say it doesn't matter. Anakin is already someone who believes he cannot, under any circumstances, trust a Sith. He fully belives the Sith are "evil" and his initial response to finding out Palpatine is a Sith IS not to trust him, to turn him in to the Jedi and let justice have its way with him. But the more he thinks about it, the more Palpatine's words slither into his soul and cause him to realize that what Palpatine is offering him is worth more than the possible consequences of leaving Palpatine alive. He'd rather have Padme and doom the Jedi and the Republic than the other way around. He also is explicitly planning to kill Palpatine himself, he says as much to Padme, he's just waiting until he can guarantee Padme will survive past childbirth or whatever. So even when he chooses to save Palpatine, he ultimately doesn't REALLY trust him that much because he KNOWS Palpatine is inherently untrustworthy. The possibility of saving Padme is worth working with someone he doesn't trust. He doesn't see any other options.

But just for the sake of argument, let's say something caused Anakin to decide Palpatine couldn't help him save Padme AT ALL, that Palpatine is lying to him or something and doesn't truly know shit all of some kind of secret power to keep people from dying. There's really no reason to believe he does, so Anakin has no reason to bother keeping him alive.

My assumption in that kind of scenario is that he'd just stick with the Jedi for the time being, he'd let them kill Palpatine or kill Palpatine himself, but then he'd probably fuck off on his own to go look for some kind of cure. I don't think Palpatine's death would keep him from obsessing over saving Padme, it would just force him to run off and look for alternatives. So he'd run, he'd abandon everyone and everything in search of some kind of miracle power or cure to keep people from dying and in the process he'd still probably lose himself to the darkness and to the desire for power for power's sake alone and he'd either remember to come back too late (after Padme had already given birth) or he'd just never come back at all because the thing that motivated him originally has lost all meaning in the quest for more and more power.

Padme would have the twins, Anakin would be gone, and what happens there is probably up to you and what you think Padme would actually choose to do with two powerful Force-sensitive twins. Maybe she refuses to give them up to the Jedi and raises them on Naboo as best she can. Maybe she DOES give them up to the Jedi because Anakin left her and the twins are now a constant reminder of that loss and the pain she associates with him and she can't stand to look at them most of the time. Maybe Padme dies in childbirth anyway and the Jedi take the children with them afterwards because she gives them away in her last breaths or something. Take your pick, I guess.

Rexsoka. Yeah, it's my ship. Still.

I mainly just lurk here, reading fanfic and enjoying the memes. But the angst of the last few has given me the courage to dive in and say a few words.

First, let me clear the air: Rebels was when I started shipping Rexsoka. Prior to their reunion on that show, it had never ever occurred to me to ship them. Despite having read the novels.

So, yeah, look, I totally get the opposition to shipping early Clone Wars Rex and Ahsoka. She's a child. He's a child too, arguably, although his accelerated maturation makes everything super messy. The military structure and fact that Rex is basically a slave means its got power issues galore. Then for those in the US, there is the whole 18 year old age of consent thing (noting, for good or ill, it's 16 most other places). I get why this squicks people. It's the SanSan of Star Wars.

But people grow up. Even on TV.

Season 7 Ahsoka is 17 going on 18, and effectively an adult. She's commanded armies, and just spent a year living and working independently. She is also obviously mature and, frankly, animated that way. Rex is a long term friend, they love and care for each other, and by the end of the season, she basically risks everything for him, and he for her. The episodes are also written in a very obviously shippy way, with the gazing, the chats, the meaningful converstions, the hand holding and the tears. Not to mention that sad, moonlit reunion in Tales of the Jedi.

And although I dont think it matters much, by this time, even taking Rex at double chronological age, the gap is pretty mild by fantasy standards. 17-18 and about 26, roughly the same as Buffy and age-corrected Angel, and way less than Han and Leia.

Fast forward to Rebels, and we have two mature adults with a shared history and goals, who love, trust and admire each other, share common interests, and are amongst the most important people in each other's lives. It's a believable and natural thing for that to progress to something more. The challenges to their relationship are things like, for Ahsoka, the lingering memory of the Jedi code and Anakin and Padme's destructive passion, and Rex's rapid aging, status and limited life experiences. It is those kinds of emotional and external barriers and their shared trauma that make the romance so interesting.

Season 7 + and Rebels Rexsoka is classic friends to lovers, and one of the nicest, softest and most realistic relationships in Star Wars. The opposition to it, and moraliatic shaming of those who like is, is something I simply don't get. It's bizarre. There are heaps of ships that are far, far more problematic (including Anakin/Padme) that don't get this hate.

Like, anti dudes, what exactly *is* the problem here? I suspect the it's that some people just want to get their hate on.

The recent flashbacks? Yeah, that one on Mandalore complicates thing, but I doubt they had stomping on shippers in mind when they cast Ariana, as I have seen suggested elsewhere. The more likely scenario is that - at about 14 yo when this was filmed - Ariana was totally perfect for the first flashback, and is perfect for playing young Ahsoka going forward. Even setting aside that she is an amazing actress, she's insanely athletic and can duel weild light sabres while knee walking though a twist. She's also already tied to Disney. She wasn't quite right for the part, and, I agree, that does make watching it in light of the fanfic a bit uncomfortable. But, it's not just a shipper issue. Putting an Ahsoka that looks and sounds like that in the episodes with the Martez sisters and Bo Katan is weird af too, and doesn't work. I doubt it is meant to.

Story-wise, the best and only real take is that the flashbacks aren't live action replays. The Mandalore scene doesnt even chronologically match what happened (Ahsoka is so fighting Saxon in that scene, which never happened). They are visions about Ahsoka and Anakin and their relationship, not live action replays. Both remember her as a child caught up in a war. Smoke, the fog of war, flashing lights and dying, faceless clones.

And Anakin and Rex.

What I take from these is that in Ahsoka's mind, and Anakin's too for that matter, Rex is always there for her. Standing in the chaos, calm and confident in himself and in her, and looking badass as heck. With an older Ahsoka it would have absolutely been smoking scene from her pov, and no way was it written otherwise. As an older Ahsoka remembering, it's hot. As younger Ahsoka, he's there as her protector and friend.

Do I do ever think this ship will play out on screen? Not, no explicitly. And, yeah, it probably is harder now because of that vision (although if they ever do film a younger Ahsoka series, they will undoubtedly be casting a young actor for Rex, and Ariana will, by then, be 18). But I don't think that was intentional, and I don't think that much has changed. It was always intended to be an "open for interpretation" relationship, written with the possibility not excluded. And I am good with that. Perhaps I even prefer it. Star Wars has a truly dreadful record with romance and, besides, too often cementing subtle or ust-based ships kill them. I just hope this hasn't, because it's still my ship and I love it.

I don't know about you but personally I don't watch star wars for its logic. I came here to see space wizards with magic floaty powers and fourteen year old queens and flying pears and sand memes and hello theres and loose wire jokes and two people in a trenchcoat and Obi-Wan telling THE ACTUAL SITH LORD THAT SITH LORDS WERE THEIR SPECIALITY ajsbiwhsb as well as Palpatine electrocuting himself at the end of every trilogy

I'm here for the Council straight up side-eyeing Anakin when Padme is mentioned and that whole death sticks sequence and 'control your insolence the cOuNt is ConCeNTraTiNg' and R2 being savage and 'don't worry, we're still flying half a ship'-

I'm here for Obi-Wan and Anakin and the fact that they are literally so entwined and that saying that where one goes the other follows and the absolute tragedy of how much they loved and hated and yearned for each other, both hurt and hurting the other and the way that they are absolutely haunted by the ghost of the other

Yes I know that its Disney trying to cash in its Star Wars quota, but you know what? There are people out there who are genuinely enthusiastic about working on these different series and now there are so many stories that can be explored and I, for one, am genuinely excited

A few plot holes doesn't make terrible writing.

This one's fun because I love them but so much of this is informed by their extreme childhood wealth discrepancy, and I like that. They match each other in personality and energy, but they're so.... I love them? I love this ship? None of this is 'one of these people is worse than the other,' it's just them being fundamentally different in a way that doesn't stop them from being a good couple, but does mean they have wildly distinct approaches to things.

leaves their dirty clothes on the floor: Padme. She? Rich person. If she leaves her clothes on the floor, a droid or a servant will pick it up. She pays them to do her laundry for a reason. Anakin? Raised by Obi-Wan Kenobi. There have been shouting matches about leaving towels on the bathroom floor. Anakin tosses his things in a hamper like a civilized working-class person. Every time he considers dropping it on the floor, Obi-Wan's voice asking 'did you ignore your mother asking you to be considerate of where you place your things the way you ignore me?' flashes through his head, and he tosses it in the hamper because Mom Would Be Disappointed If She Were Still Alive, and unlike murder, the dark side does not work its way into Anakin's head on the topic of dirty laundry.

forgets to run the dish washer: Again, Padme. Again, rich person. This is what Threepio is for! Anakin is baffled by this. Padme. Babe. It's one button.

pumps gas for the car: Anakin, because Padme's dresses are... seriously not worth risking a stain on.

drives when they’re going somewhere: Anakin will insist. Padme will... usually let him win. She starts putting her foot down and taking the wheel after the twins are born. The way Anakin flies is really, really not safe for the babies.

rearranges the furniture: They both do for different reasons. Padme's got interior design Thoughts And Opinions (which are... mostly tasteful), whereas Anakin gets caught up in mechanical engineering frenzies and needs room to work and create things and the couch was in the way.

falls asleep with the TV on: Anakin. He's exhausted more often than Padme is.

gets to use the bathroom first: Anakin, because he can shower in under five minutes. Ten including blow-drying his hair and the detach/reattach process for his arm. Padme... needs much longer.

decides the temperature for the ac/heater: Anakin. Padme sometimes wants to turn it down, but then she remembers tiny baby Ani being cold on the ship from Tatooine to Coruscant back when they first met, and she lets him get away with it. Anakin doesn't realize this is why; he's just glad that he doesn't have to wear five layers to bed, and that Padme is wearing her lightest nightgowns that he can just. Wow. What a gal.

sets up holiday decorations: Ehhh. Padme sort of makes a nod to doing so, and puts up a few things, but a lot of it is done by droids or staff, despite her saying things like 'Oh, I was planning to decorate today.' Anakin wants to Help and mostly does so by floating up things most people would need a ladder to do for.

leaves the lights on: Padme. Anakin has done 'navigate with a blindfold with only the Force to guide me' training, and sometimes forgets to turn the lights on. He's also, you know, a former slave from abject poverty, who likely had a lot of anxiety growing up about using too much energy, and earning Watto's ire for the energy bill. Padme just got sighed at, maybe a tired or annoyed lecture from her mom. By the time she was fourteen, she had droids.

uses the bathroom with the door open: Padme. She's actually been yelled at by handmaidens for locking the door in her apartment bathroom because of this one time she passed out from an injury in the shower and they needed to pick the lock to get at her.

fixes the plumbing (or calls the plumber): Anakin tries to fix the plumbing. Sometimes, like with the heater, this is fine. Sometimes, like with the sewage, it is not. Padme calls the plumber at hour three.

idk something cute about obikin, when characterized that anakin has loved obi-wan since he was a kid, is just that. anakin gets to fall in love again and again and again. every new phase of life he sees obi-wan differently and he loves him differently. obi-wan treats him differently as they both grow up and anakin finds new things about him to love, new jokes that he understands now, new corners of his personality that were previously hidden, and finds all of them so entrancing. whereas obi-wan's love for anakin shifts and changes over their time together, until romance is all tangled up with i took care of you and will always take care of you and i used to teach you and i always want to be able to teach you and you used to come to me when you were scared, i never want you to be afraid again, anakin just finds new ways to love, always different and exciting, until all his past loves are still obi-wan

au where obi-wan and anakin are both employees of their respective (state?? planet?? take this au anywhere you want) departments of tourism and part of their jobs is doing the whole social media thing. anakin (who high tailed it out of the desert as soon as he could) is very happy promoting the wonderful lakes, forests, markets, and temperate weather of naboo. obi-wan, after a slight 1/3rd life crisis, is having a blast promoting the beautiful dunes, rock formations, sand boarding, hiking, and tanning opportunities of tatooine.

once anakin finds out that fucking tatooine of all places has a department of tourism, and that theyre trying to make his hometown seem nice, decides that he has enough job security to start ripping this social media account a new one, from the official naboo account. obi-wan, of course, has to retaliate. in between normal, expected posts, about cultural events, true accounts, and cross promotion of different departments, it’s common to see an absolutely scathing review of tatooine canyon or a less than stellar photo of a hot spring from naboo (with the caption you guys really hike 4 hours, spend thousands of credits, just to see a hole with less pressure than my showerhead 🤨🤨 alright then #VisitTatooine #AtLeastOurSunsDontDecideNotToComeOut). onlookers think this is just a funny ‘haha the accounts are trying to personifiy themselves and have a little rivalry’ but no, their coworkers are begging them to stop. please anakin, we know you hate sand, but NABOO cant say that. obi-wan please we cant have people think that everyone on tatooine likes fighting our department is supposed to change that.

they end up meeting at some large conference and they hit it off and when they find out WHERE they work, WHAT department, and WHICH media account they’re in charge of, they’re like the spiderman meme except with more sexual tension.

long story short, they split the difference and end up moving to coruscant when they get married

My #1 post of 2022

au where anakin is a habitual sugar baby but he doesnt like to do much sexual stuff so he usually dips when his daddies start asking about more than dates. he’s making his way through grad school and doesnt have a lot of time for a ‘normal job’, between TAing and doing research labs, so this works for him, despite his limitations. obi-wan is a hot shot accountant that was conned by his friends into using a sugaring app, since he refused to be endearing on dating apps and hated everyone that his friends tried to set him up with. the goal is just to get him used to ‘putting himself out there’ and no one actually expects him to become a sugar daddy.

anyway he and anakin start chatting, anakin asks obi-wan to take him out to dinner and obi-wan is like “uhh sure” and takes him to a nice, but not overly expensive restaurant, an anakin is like HUH? they start talking and anakin offhandedly mentions some of his spending habits and obi-wan is like “you spend HOW MUCH a month on toys?” (”Gunpla aren’t toys, they’re model kits, and it takes a lot of patience to put them together”) and instead of a normal session, they spend the rest of the evening arguing about anakin’s monthly budget. he almost forgets to ask obi-wan to pay him his usual fee, and when obi-wan hands over the money he’s like, “this better not be going to those ‘gunpla’s when you havent paid your cell phone bill yet”

usually after such a confrontational meeting anakin would NOT be setting up another one. but obi-wan is handsome and funny and he actually had some good advice of how to reshuffle money so he meets with him again and again and soon he has a budget that saves him more money and he can just stay afloat with his pay from TAing and with just one sugar daddy.

and obi-wan, who expected nothing out of this and instead found this sugar baby who he’s kinda obsessed with, certainly isn’t going to argue. and hey, you know, an even better way to save money is by finding a cheaper place to live, anakin, for example, my house, where i don’t charge rent at all. anyway, anakin transitions from a sugar baby to a trophy husband in under a year and obi-wan still side eyes him everytime he buys mecha kits
