Truth or Dare
Flufftober Day 14: Truth Or Dare/20 Questions (Read on AO3)
Jace knows that the last few days around the Institute have been stressful for everyone, but he's surprised when Alec offers to take him out for drinks after their shift today. Normally he has to drag Alec kicking and screaming to the bar, but he isn't about to question it - especially when drinks are on Alec.
It's a few drinks in when Jace starts to feel the effects, and a few more before Alec very casually suggests they play a game.
"How about a little truth or dare?" Alec suggests.
Jace is suspicious.
"Well? Truth or dare?" Alec prompts.
"...dare."
Alec smirks. "Start a fight with that werewolf over there."
Jace immediately shakes his head. They only just reached a truce on some tense matters with the werewolves and he isn't about to ruin a month of negotiations by starting a war.
"No? Well then, I guess you'll just have to go truth. So tell me the truth: do you like Meliorn romantically?" Alec asks.
Jace curses. Alec's been trying to get him to admit to liking Meliorn ever since Jace and Meliorn recently reactivated their alliance rune and grew rather close while working with each other to learn more about the other's abilities. Alec’s attempted to get this information out of Jace so many times before, but up until now Jace was able to make his answers evasive enough not to really admit to anything.
Did he like Meliorn? Sure, Meliorn is great.
Did he have feelings for Meliorn? He feels glad to have him as a friend.
Jace is getting pretty good at being clever enough to avoid giving answers he doesn’t want to give, even while unable to lie. Unfortunately, right now Jace is very drunk, and his brain can only process one answer to Alec’s question. It’s a thought that’s been on Jace’s mind a lot lately, and he can’t for the life of him thin of a way around it given Alec’s new wording of his question.
“Yes,” Jace says. “I do.”
“I knew it!” Alec exclaims. “Finally. Why couldn’t you just tell me that before?”
“Because we’re taking it slow,” Jace starts, then immediately clamps his mouth shut. It’s one thing to admit to having a crush on the Seelie, but he didn’t mean to let it slip that they’re already involved. That wasn’t even on Alec and his questioning, that’s all on Jace and being tipsy and just wanting to talk about it with his best friend. “I wanted to tell you. I was just… worried Meliorn would change their mind. I wanted to make sure it stuck first.”
Alec’s expression softens.
“They’d be a fool not to keep you,” Alec says.
“Thanks, man,” Jace says. He believes it, too. And maybe tomorrow, once he’s sobered up a bit, he’ll have a talk with Meliorn about taking the next step, because Jace would be a fool not to make an effort to keep Meliorn, too.

From the Dirt | Read on Ao3
When Meliorn dragged Jace back to the graveyard, Jace had no clue what he was getting himself into but in the end, he couldn't really complain.
A soft AU about Jace and Meliorn tending to a graveyard and loving each other.
Working in the Graveyard was hard work, harder work than most people assumed it was. When Jace came into town and was initially offered the job, even he’d underestimated it. He thought it would be easy but now, Jace knew it was anything but.
At the time, he’d been desperate for a place to stay. He had no money. He had no job. He had very few options available to him and he had no clue what he was going to do. That’s when Jace just happened to come across Meliorn, who’d gone into one of the shops to purchase some supplies and then come out and found Jace’s sorry form standing outside.
For some reason, Jace’s dirty tangled hair and exhausted face caught the man’s attention. Maybe, it had just been because the village they were in was fairly small and Jace was new but regardless of the reason why, Meliorn had paused and after a moment of staring at him, he asked where Jace had come from.
Jace had looked up, frowned for a moment and taken in the man’s long braided hair, the way his green and tan tunic was tied rather elegantly around his waist and even the delicate leaf, which had been painted onto the man’s cheek. He was beautiful and interesting - two things Jace didn’t believe he was at all and certainly not in the state he’d been in that day. Jace hadn’t understood why this man had found anything about him appealing enough to stop and speak to him.
“Away,” Jace murmured at last, his answer not particularly compelling or forthcoming.
Meliorn’s eyes had flickered up and then down Jace’s body before he’d hummed in response. “Well, do you have anywhere to stay, awayer?” Meliorn asked at last.
Jace shook his head no and without any other prompting, Meliorn shoved the bag he was carrying into Jace’s arms - a bag of heavy fertilizer that Jace struggled to shift in his grasp and hold tighter, so he wouldn’t drop it. “Come then,” Meliorn said before he was turning away to walk down the stone path, away from the shop he’d just left. “Maybe, you can be of assistance to me,” he called over his shoulder.
Jace didn’t know what else to do besides follow. It wasn’t as if he had anything better to be doing. “You didn’t introduce yourself,” Jace said, as he struggled to catch up to the man’s quick footsteps.
“Meliorn,” he’d replied without turning.
Meliorn- Jace repeated in his head. What an interesting and pretty name for such an interesting and pretty person. “I’m Jace,” Jace said, even though he hadn’t been asked.
Meliorn hummed softly, not even looking back and as Jace followed. For a moment, Jace wondered exactly what he was getting himself into and then, he wondered if there was anything he could be walking towards that would make him not follow someone as captivating as Meliorn.
Apparently, there wasn’t.
.
Meliorn led Jace to the edge of town, where there lay a big decrepit graveyard, with weeds overflowing onto the gravestones and a fence that looked as if it had been completely taken over by nature. Jace might think the graveyard was abandoned, if couldn’t see that some of the stones were new and some of the dirt from the plots was recently overturned.
Meliorn led Jace towards the back, where they came across a small stone building half buried in a hill. Meliorn pushed the door open and gestured for Jace to walk into the cold damp place. Jace had moved inside without thinking, even though the room deeply unsettled him. He felt as if he was about to be locked in the dark alone. He was thankful when Meliorn moved in behind him.
Meliorn closed the door and then in the complete darkness, he turned and lit a candle, lighting the room in a soft orange, flicking glow. Jace peered around, startled as hell when he found himself staring at dried blood that had been dripped across the floor and what was unmistakably a body laid out on a metal table, covered in a pale sheet that did nothing to hide the shape.
“That’s a body,” Jace said, shocked.
Meliorn didn’t even look over to him. “Yes,” he said simply, before he was pointing towards a corner, where Jace could see some other supplies. “Put the bag over there,” Meliorn commanded.
Jace finally ripped his eyes away from the body and moved to do as he was told, before turning back towards the strange man and frowning. “Why am I here?” He asked.
Meliorn had moved towards the body now and Jace paled when he saw the man unceremoniously pull the sheet down, revealing the body Jace had known was there but certainly hadn’t wanted to see. “You need a place to stay, right?” Meliorn called over his shoulder, as he poked at the body, checking for something Jace couldn’t guess at.
Jace nodded and then jolted to respond when he realized Meliorn wasn’t looking towards him. “Yes.”
Meliorn finally straightened out again, looking away from the body to glance back to Jace again. “Good, I need help and I have a spare bed. It all works out.” Meliorn tossed the sheet back over the body before he turned, wiping his hands on his pants as if to get rid of something. “Grab that,” Meliorn said, already moving towards the door.
Jace froze. “Grab what?” He asked after him, appalled and already knowing what Meliorn was talking about. He knew what Meliorn meant. He was just hoping he was wrong.
“You know,” Meliorn replied simply before he left the room, shining the bright light from outside in for a brief moment before the door was closing, leaving Jace alone with the body in the dark.
Jace jolted to grab the body, grimacing and trying desperately to keep the sheet covering it as he tossed it onto his shoulder and tried to pretend it was nothing but a bag of flour. Jace practically ran to the door, desperate to get outside into the light again.
Outside, Jace walked to Meliorn, who was now standing over an empty section of the graveyard. He froze a few steps away, still holding the body over his shoulder as he waited for some kind of instruction.
“Put that down,” Meliorn said simply, pointing to the ground. “Dig here, about five feet down or the animals will smell it. Tell me when you’re done. I have fruit trees to tend to.”
Meliorn turned without another word, starting to leave the cemetery and head up the road, towards a small cabin Jace could see in the distance. Outside, there were in fact blooming fruit trees, all surrounding a garden that seemed as if it was half crops and half flowers and weeds. It was over grown, out of control and much like the graveyard, it was untended and yet, everything there seemed to be thriving together.
Jace stood and watched him leave for a moment before he put the body down, flinching at the sound it made as it hit the ground. Jace reached for the shovel that was a few feet away and after a second of hesitation, he shoved the end into the dirt and started to dig.
That was the first day he ever worked in the graveyard and when he was done, hours later, he was dripping with sweat and covered in dirt but the body had been buried, just like Meliorn had asked. After, Jace made his way towards Meliorn’s cabin and hesitantly made his way inside, finding Meliorn standing in a small kitchen, washing the fruit he’d plucked in a bucket.
There was the smell of fresh baked bread and pie in the air, mixing with the smell of flowers that Jace could see blooming in every available space they could be. Meliorn turned to look at him, laughing softly when he saw how dirty Jace was.
“There’s a creek out back,” Meliorn said, already turning back towards his fruit. “Go clean up.”
Jace turned and walked back outside, making his way around the cabin and walking until he found the creek to wash himself in the cold water. After that, he just lived with Meliorn. He worked nearly everyday in the graveyard. Meliorn tended to their crops, made bread and pies, some for them to sell and some for them to eat, while Jace worked in the graveyard, burying bodies when they came, fixing the stones that needed it, carving out new grave markers and doing anything else that involve intense physical labor.
It wasn’t that Meliorn couldn’t do the physical labor. He’d done it all alone before Jace had come but now that Jace was there, Meliorn simply didn’t subject himself to it. He didn’t have to. He had Jace to do it and Jace couldn’t really complain. Meliorn gave him a place to sleep. He made delicious food and the man wasn’t bad company either.
Besides, Jace got over how freaked out he was by the bodies quickly and eventually, it became mundane to deal with them and lug them around like they were nothing. He’d lay bodies in their graves and then, he’d bug Meliorn to give him a bit of whatever he was cooking before he’d go clean up.
All and all, Jace could have found himself in a far worse situation, with people far less compelling than Meliorn was. It was only a bonus that Jace started to fall in love with Meliorn soon after and it was only a miracle that Meliorn returned the feeling, loving Jace like Jace didn’t think anyone ever had before.
Dealing with bodies all day was well worth it for that.

Soulmarks AU part 1
Everyone get’s their soul mark around 16, it’s just common fact.
When Alec turns 16 he scours his body for anything, a small blemish, anything to let him know where his soul mate will first touch him but he can’t find anything.
He’s always feared this day, but before he was worried that it’d be a large handprint or something else that let others know he was gay.
Now he worries he doesn’t have a soul mate at all.
His family tries to console him, that maybe he’s a late bloomer, that maybe his mate isn’t born yet and that’s why he hasn’t gotten one.
That idea is almost worse that he’d be that much older than his mate.
It’s almost 3 months before he realizes he does have a soul mark, it’s just in a place he’s been studiously avoiding.
He’s in the shower, trying to block out the thoughts that always come to him there when he happens to glance down and something looks, strange.
Trembling fingers reach down and brush away the thick hair before he gasps.
He tells himself its just water from the shower streaming down his cheeks, but even he can’t believe that.
It’s hard to see, and afterwards he has to go steal a mirror from Izzy just to be able to see it better, but once he can see more he realizes what it is.
Most people’s marks show up on their hands, handshakes, high fives, things like that being first touches.
Next most common are things like arms, face and back, then less common legs, feet, chest, etc.
Least common are what are called the sexual marks, when your soul mates first touch is somewhere like a breast, your ass, your genitals.
Alec would have never guessed his soul mark would be the shape of lips around the base of his cock.
The moment it fully hits him he finally gives in to the urges he’s fought so long, because he can’t stop thinking about what it means, who it means.
of course he also wonders how in the world the first touch of his soul mate is him being blown.
He can’t imagine any future where he’s confident enough that his first touch with someone is like that.
Some nights he wonders how it’s going to happen and it both scares and thrills him.
It’s barely two weeks before Jace can’t take noticing Alec’s shy, private smiles when he thinks no one is looking and corners him about it.
Alec doesn’t want to admit it at first, but finally he tells Jace, who as usual is incredulous.
“There’s no WAY your soul mark is a stage 3.  NO way!”
Alec, feeling the need to reassure himself it’s real, show just the very hint of it to Jace who promptly loses his mind.
“Your soul mark is LIPS around your COCK!”
Unfortunately his parents happen to hear Jace shouting this which leads to some absolutely mortifying discussions.
After that things slip back to normal, although he always feels the weight of it in others gazes if they know, wondering if he’s going to be some kind of slut that he has a mark like that.
Alec waits and waits, hoping that somehow his mate will find him without any outward mark and his own closeted status, but by the time he’s 24 he’s still a virgin and not out to anyone but his sister so he’s kind of given up hope.
And then Jace begins dating a girl named Clary and starts dragging Alec with him to meet her friends.
They aren’t soul mates, and Alec feels like it’s a waste to get that invested, but he’s trying to be supportive for his brother.
Clary’s best friend, Simon, has just recently met his soulmate Raphael and the group, consisting of them, Alec, Clary, Jace, and then Raphael’s friends Magnus and Meliorn sit around talking when the topic of soul mark comes up.
Jace’s mark is a hand print on his face, which everyone thinks is hilarious and, knowing Jace, seems fitting that his mate would slap him.
Clary’s is the more common hand mark from a greeting.
Simon and Raphael had SImon’s wrist and Raphael’s neck.
Melliorn also has his entire hand marked.
Only Magnus and Alec are left and before Magnus can say anything Jace buts in.
“If we’re really talking interesting soul marks Alec has-”
Alec roughly shoves Jace “Shut up.”
“Oh come on.  It’s the best soul makr I’ve ever seen.  Well, half seen since you won’t let me see the rest of it.”
“I’m nto showing my brother my...” Alec starts before stopping himself, groaning as he’s already given too much away.
“Show your brother what exactly?  Alexander, do you have a sexual mark?” Magnus asks, voice playfully coy.
Alec tries to deny it, but Jace is grinning and nodding like a madman and Alec tosses a pillow at his head.
“Oh I HAVE to know what it is now Alec!”  Simon is practically rabid to find out and Alec is pretty sure he’d rather die than discuss this.
“If you don’t tell them I will.”
“You’re a horrible brother.”
“My mark is me being slapped, and yours is what yours is, tell me who got the rough end?”
Sighing Alec finally gives in.  He dutifully avoids everyone’s gaze as he begins.  “My mark is...  A pair of lips...”
“Where?” Magnus asks.
Magnus himself has his mark on his lips, but it’s covered up by lipstick at the moment, so it piques his interest.
Not that he thinks Alec is his soul mate, the man is so stuffy that he has to be straight.
Alec groans, glancing to Jace who is on the verge of tears with silent laughter.
“It’s a pair of lips around...  Around my cock.  Like my mate is giving me a blowjob...”
There’s a roar of laughter as the entire group breaks out over this revelation.
“And she must be really good too, because I’ve seen Alec in underwear, he’s a big boy to be lips at the base.”
Jace actually gets punched in the arm at that by Alec, but Magnus doesn’t miss the weird twitch Alec gives off when Jace says “she”
“Laugh it up, at least I’m getting sucked off by my mate...” Alec finally says, trying to salvage some of his reputation, even if he can’t believe he’s just said that.
Once everyone calms down Clary turns to Magnus, “So what is yours Magnus?”
All eyes turn to him before Magnus smiles and grabs a napkin.
“Funny enough, mine is also lip related,” he says with a smirk.  Slowly he wipes away his bright purple lipstick to reveal dark soul marks covering his entire lips.
Alec can’t help but gulp and cough, because while he could clearly just be kissing his mate, there’s no mistaking that Alec has always known his own soul mate would have to have their soul mark covering their lips.
And, well, Magnus is the most gorgeous man he’s ever met, evne if he’s done his best to barely look at him.
Except now that he’s heard that he can’t do anyhting but look at him, having to pry his eyes away.
Magnus eventually catches him and he looks away, feeling heat creep into his cheeks, but when he glances back Magnus is still staring at him.
Alec is thankful that Raphael says he needs to go soon after, and since he drove most of them here, that means they have to leave.
Everyone exchanges pleasantries as they prepare to leave.
IN an attempt to be a little shit, Meliorn gently pats Jace on his cheek as he leaves  with a playful “see you around blondie.”
It’s only a moment later when Jace and Meliorn both freeze as Meliorn walks away that everyone stops to stare at them.
Jace is touching his face with just his fingertips, right over his soul mark.
As they watch the mark begins to fade.
Meliorn turns around looking confused, his hand raised as his mark is fading at the same rate.
“I’m not even gay, what the fuck?!” Jace shouts as he turns to Meliorn.
Meliorn just smirks, “Wouldn’t be the first straight boy I’ve turned.”
Alec is, not surprisingly, the most shocked of anyone that isn’t Jace, since he’s never even heard Jace mention another man was attractive as a joke.
“This...  Cannot be happening,” Jace says, looking from Meliorn to Clary
“Like, it has to be a mistake right, right Alec?”
Alec just stares at Jace, then to Meliorn and back to Jace.  “Uh, I’ve never heard of a soul mark disappearing without meeting your mate and having it touched.”
“If its any consolation, plenty of people don’t realize their latent bisexual tendencies until later in life,” Magnus says, “I mean I’ve always known I was a raging bisexual, but it’s not as easy for others.”
Hearing that definitely make Alec’s stomach flip, but he tries to ignore it.
“But, if I was gay I could do so much better...” Jace says, let down..
“Like I’d have picked a puny blond white fucboi as my mate?” Meliorn says, but he’s grinning.
“Shut it you asshole!”
“Make me.”
“Oh I’ll make you I’ll shut your entire mouth up I’ll...” Jace stops, realizing he’s gotten right in Meliorn’s face.
“Uh... I, what I meant was, um,” Jace panics, but before he can do anything to back away Meliorn grabs him and kisses him hard.
For about 3 seconds Jace seems like he’s going to bolt, then he very clearly moans and grips Meliorn’s arm and kisses back.
Alec’s jaw drops, Clary looks like she’s about to cry, Magnus and SImon are both cheering and Raphael looks bored.
When they finally break apart Jace looks dazed, it takes him a minute to process before he turns to the group and simply says “Well, I’m definitely Bi.”
Clary actually starts crying then, running off and Magnus gives one last lingering look at Alec that makes Alec’s heart beat faster before running after her.
Alec goes home alone, laying in bed wondering how both he and Jace didn’t realize this.  He tells Izzy only enough that she knows Jace broke up with Clary at the party and that Clary, who she still hasn’t met, was inconsolable.
The next day he sees Jace trying to sneak in the house before breakfast and he opens the door for him and hands him some coffee.
“Really?  The first night Jace?  Yesterday you didn’t even think you were attracted to guys.”
Jace has hickies all over his neck, along with what look like bite marks.
“What can I say, I’m a fast learner.”  He winks at Alec and takes a long swig of coffee..
“Besides, like you can talk Mr. my girl is gonna suck me off the first time we meet.”
“Not my girl.”
“I mean she’ll be your girl after it happens.”
“No, I mean.  It’d be my guy.  My soulmate has to be a guy, I’m gay Jace.”
“WHAT?!”
“Why do you sound more shocked to find out I’m gay than you did to find out you yourself were bi?”
“Because you’re...  You!  You're like, the straightest person I know!”
Alec grimaces at that.
“I’m not sure how to respond to that”
“YOu know what I mean, most gay guys are all sparkly and fun and sexually liberated and shit.”
“Way to stereotype Jace.”
“I’m just saying you don’t seem gay.”
“Well I’m sorry Im not constantly sucking a cock Jace but I mean... I am gay.”
“What in the world did I just walk in on?” Izzy asks, rounding the corner into the kitchen.
“uh, Alec was just, um” Jace stammers, trying to cover for his older brother.
“She knows I’m gay JAce, its fine.”
“Oh thank God,” Jace sighs. Then, “Wait, you told her and not me!”
“I figured it out, it’s not that hard.”
“Funny since Jace just called me the straightest person he’s ever met.”
“Well, I mean, if you just took everything you did at face value, sure, he’s right.”
Alec turns to Izzy with a stern look.
“I’m just saying, it’s a very convincing façade you’ve created Alec.”
“Well anyway, I guess that means we’re down to only one straight sibling,” Jace says, laughing.
“Yes, it’s a pity only women have to deal with you Jace.”
Alec and Jace both share a look then turn back to Izzy.
“Wait...”
“Iz?”
“Oh come on, please tell me you both didn’t think I was straight!”
“Gaydar machine really, really broken,” Alec says, patting himself down like he’s lost it.
“Hey at least you knew you were gay Alec, you should have caught this, I’m new to this shit.”
That makes Izzy turn to Jace, “What does THAT mean?”
Jace smirks, and it’s only then Izzy realizes his soulmate mark is gone.
“Oh my god, your mark is gone!  When, who?”
“Last night.  His name’s Meliorn.  I call him Mel.”
“HIS name!  You’re Bi?”
“Apparently.”
“You didn’t know?”
Jace laughs, “I mean I always said I was everyone’s type, I just didn’t know everyone was my type.”
Alec groans along with Izzy at that joke before he realizes.  “Wait, so none of us are straight?”
“No.”
“Clearly not.”
“Wow, our parents are REALLY going to be angry when they find out.” Alec says.
“Totally unfair I’m going to take the brunt of it since I met my guy first.”
“Please, you literally got to find out you were Bi the moment it happened, I’ve had internalized homophobia since I was 11,” Alec deadpans.  “Get on my level.”
“I mean we can just all, tell them together?  They still have one shot at a straight kid with Max I guess.”  Izzy looks both nervous and excited about the prospect.
“The odds aren’t looking good for Max,” Jace says, and they all crack up before hugging.

Story:
Jace rummaged through the disheveled storage closet. He needed to pull out the Christmas Tree decorations that the Institute kept tucked away. This year Jace had the honor of setting up and decorating the tree for the holidays. Usually, it would fall onto the Institute Head to decorate the tree as tradition, but Alec had been busy lately with some warlock winter tradition.
Izzy then pulled the whole ‘Alec is your Parabatai, and he covers for you, so you should too.’ Jace was well aware of the times his brother had covered for him. So he sucked it up and played right into his sister’s hand.
Jace had been relieved that Meliorn didn’t mind having to reorganize their date. They had planned to see some more of the Seelie Realm. Instead, Meliorn was going to come over and help Jace with the tree and decorations.
Isabelle had told him the Clave usually had the trees delivered to the Institutes. Jace had never seen anyone do it before, so he hadn’t believed her till Andrew had woken him up by banging against his door this morning because they needed him to sign-off on the drop-off.  Dropping off a tree was one of the few things that the Clave never failed to provide on time.
The tree had been massive when they had wheeled it in. Luckily the branches were being contained because of the net around the tree. They had carted it to the main entrance hall of the Institute and set it up. Jace figured it had to do something with appearances. He hadn’t noticed it before, but it was true, after the first week of December, there would always be a Christmas Tree fully decked out with decorations proudly standing whenever you entered the Institute.
“Hey, Mel just got here,” Izzy’s voice pulled him from the mountain of boxes and his thoughts. “Are you okay? Why are you here?”
“I’m looking for the damn tree decorations!” Jace responded, irritated as he brushed some dust off his jacket.
“They are in the boxes, Jace.”
“This whole room is filled with boxes, Iz. So you are going to have to be more specific than that!” Jace snapped back. His only thoughts right now were on how Meliorn was here, he looked a mess, and he still hadn’t found the damn lights!
“No idiot, I mean the ones they delivered with the tree,” Izzy responded as she rolled her eyes at her brother. “You signed the inventory list. Jace, they delivered a tree and twelve boxes. What did you think the boxes were for?”
“I thought it was just stuff to keep the tree healthy. Mom and Dad always put stuff at the bottom,” Jace explained. He couldn’t believe he had just spent the last hour down here searching for boxes that were upstairs next to the damn tree already. “How much of a disaster do I look?”
“Well, since we are Shadowhunters, the scratches and dirt are on point with our aesthetic but maybe shake it off your face and hair,” she teased and patted the sleeve of his jacket to get some spider webs that fell on it off.
Jace groaned and stuck his tongue out before rolling his eyes at his sister and leaving her behind in the mess of a room. He knew he would have to back and fix that later. Right now, though, Jace was mostly kicking himself for not checking the boxes before going off and wasting time.
“Melio-” Jace stopped mid-sprint and sentence as he reached a very angry looking Seelie. “Hey, everything okay, Mel?”
Jace had seen Meliorn angry before, but this was a mix between disgust and anger. He didn’t know the combination of those emotions could be displayed on a person’s face, but Meliorn had proved him wrong in other ways before.
“Jace, why do you have this?” Meliorn asked with a scold as he waved at the now fully extended tree.
“The tree? We have one every year,” Jace tentatively explains, all while trying to decipher what about it upset his boyfriend. “The Clave sends one to every Institute for the holidays.”
“So you partake in the barbaric ritual of decorating dead trees?” Meliorn accused him with a growl.
It then dawned on Jace what was going on. He had never thought that the tree might be offensive to Seelies. He knew that they were attached to all things that sprouted from the Earth, but Jace never realized it would extend to this. Jace then started to wonder how many times in the past years had Seelies been angered or made uncomfortable by this.
“When you put it that way, I can see the fault in it,” Jace answered with a sigh. “I told you I would be decorating the Institute’s Christmas tree when I had to reschedule our date. I thought you knew. I didn’t know it would be offensive, I swear.”
Jace watched as Meliorn’s anger dissipated. He moved towards Meliorn and reached out for his hand.
“I know I can be an idiot at times,” Jace stated as he curled his fingers in the Seelie’s hand. “But I wouldn’t purposefully ask you over to do this with me if I knew it was offensive. I would never do that to you, Mel.”
“I know, my petal,” Meliorn assured as he kissed the top of Jace’s hair and pulled him closer. “I just assumed you meant a plastic one, especially since you mentioned having to find the boxes for it.”
Jace leaned into his boyfriend’s embrace and sighed.
“I was looking for the decorations, which I didn’t have to since they deliver them with the tree as well,” Jace cleared up and started to play with the long strands of Meliorn’s hair. “The Institute has one every year. Have you never seen it before?”
“It wasn’t till last year when your Parabatai took over that we were even welcomed to enter the Institute, my nectar,” Meliorn explained and received a groan and head shake from Jace at the new pet name. “Another fail?”
“I don’t know why you insist on calling me by names or parts of flowers,” Jace grumbled into Meliorn’s winter coat. “I’m not fragile like them; I’m a Shadowhunter.”
It had become a small game with them. Meliorn was always trying to develop new names to call Jace, and other than Petal, all were rejected.
“That may be true, but you hold the beauty to rival theirs,” Meliorn complimented and laid another kiss to the top of Jace’s head. “On most days, you surpass it.”
“Is this another stab at my snoring?” Jace redirected and buried his blush further into his boyfriend’s chest. “Just stick to petal, please, Mel.”
“That’s not fair, you know I can’t resist your pleads,” Meliorn answered and tipped Jace’s chin so that he would be forced to look up at the Seelie. “How could I deny you anything, my petal.”
Jace felt Meliorn lean forward and kiss him softly. He eagerly reciprocated and smiled.
“How about I deal with the tree, and you go grab your coat,” Meliorn offered. “We can go out still.”
“What are you going to do with it?” Jace asked and raised an eyebrow as his boyfriend stepped away from him.
“Watch.”
Jace watched as Meliorn stepped up to the tree and brushed his hands against it. The scent of burning sugar and rain warned him of what Meliorn was doing, though. After being together for so long and at times in the Seelie Realm, Jace had learned to associate that smell will Seelie magic. Jace kept watching curiously as the tree rustled a bit. He saw the small tendrils of pastel green magic bleed off Meliorn’s fingertips.
“There. All done,” Meliorn claimed as he walked back to Jace. “It was still holding on with the water you were giving it, so it was easy to coax the roots to take.”
“Root? Take where?” Jace asked, confused. He didn’t understand why the Seelie was talking about roots.
“There is only one room below before dirt; so I fed it some of my magic so the tree could extend its roots down to the dirt past that.”  Meliorn nonchalantly explained.
Jace felt the panic start rising as he understood what his boyfriend had done. Underneath, where it was mostly storage, there were now roots breaking through down to the dirt. There was a hole that extended two-floor technically since Jace assumed there was now a hole underneath the tree’s skirt. Jace would now have to explain to Alec why the hole that hadn’t been there previously was now there. He could already hear his Parabatai’s lecturing voice. Jace had started to wonder why the Institute alarms hadn’t been triggered yet, only to listen to the alarm signaling an infiltrator. Since Meliorn had broken the structure, Jace understood it.
“Jace!” Isabelle’s voice called out from behind him, and he could hear the fast clicking of her heels.
It was then he realized not only had Izzy heard the Institute alarm, but Jace had left her downstairs in the basement where there was no doubt now roots growing.
“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Mel, we have to go,” Jace panicked and started to think of how long he could hide in the Seelie Realm before Alec would get Magnus to track him. “How am I supposed to explain the hole to Alec?”
“Jace Lightwood-Wayland-Herondale!” Izzy’s voice came again, but this time she was at the hallway entrance staring at both of them. “Care to explain why we suddenly have a root infestation?”
Jace groaned and buried his face in his boyfriend’s chest again.

Please, Make It Go Away (Jeliorn)
Jace/Meliorn, Rated M, 1.4k words, arguably Canon Compliant
Implied Drunk Sex (Dubious Consent there because one’s drunk, one’s sober)
Jace struggles to deal with Clary's loss, and finds himself drinking too much. Drunken steps lead him somewhere he didn't know he needed.
Written for @shadowhunterschallenges, Day 3 of the RarePair Challenge: Jeliorn
Read On AO3
Jace knocked back the end of his whiskey glass. It hit the bar with an empty clink. He waved around at the bartender for another. He didn’t know how many he’d drank anymore.
Nothing made sense. The hole in his heart was too big, and trying to fill it with alcohol didn’t work. His heart was pierced, like the Danaids’ barrel, and he felt useless in trying to fill it back up.
It was Clary, who could fill his heart properly. And she wasn’t there anymore. All he had, was alcohol and the bartender that kept pouring him drinks despite the fact that he shouldn’t be drinking any more.
He didn’t remember the name of this bar, he just thought that the bartender was nice enough to not seem to care about the fact he wouldn’t be able to walk right when he stood back up. His glass was filled again and he slid another bill over the counter. Nothing really mattered and he wanted to get so wasted that he didn’t remember Clary’s absence.
It would hurt so much tomorrow morning, when he would have to wake up for patrol. Good.
He started drinking the rough, amber liquid greedily, not caring very much what he looked like. There was a perimeter of empty chairs around him, where no one had sat in a long time. He guessed that, with the leather jacket and the greasy hair, the dark circles and the breath that smelled too much like alcohol, he didn’t make a very attractive picture.
Fuck. What would Clary think of him if she saw him like this?
He shoved himself off of the stool and almost tumbled to the floor. His vision was so blurry that he barely could see the difference between the brown-painted concrete floor and the wooden counter of the bar.
“Want me to call you a cab, dude?” The bartender called.
Jace replied something he wished resembled “No, it’s fine, I’m just going to walk.”
He stumbled out of the bar through the door. The bell of it chimed distantly and he started walking down the sidewalk. He didn’t know where exactly he was going. He hoped his feet knew the way to the Institute, to his bed.
New York wasn’t really that pretty at night. It had garbage cans overflowing with the day’s trash, the sour smell of urine against the pavement. It had poor, desperate people, masses huddled against walls and inside construction scaffolding, sleeping there. You could never see the stars in the sky, because the lights of the city, of the big squares and the giant screens of adds lit up the sky too brightly to see anything.
Jace walked down the sidewalk and the world around him dissolved into a smudge that should have been darker than it actually was. Many places were still open, actually. Too many.
It was a bit cold but he didn’t do anything to keep himself warm. He just walked, and prayed that his boots would hit the steps of the Institute. His boots pressed into grass instead. He blinked. The vapors of alcohol kept him from seeing any real structure, but he knew there was grass.
He was probably on the lawn in front of the Institute. He sighed softly. Finally he was home. Finally he could sleep the alcohol away, disappear into dark night, and wake up maybe slightly more rested than he usually would.
He wished he could disappear inside the void of sleep and never come back, some days. Most days.
His fingers bumped against a tree, the bark rough against his fingertips and he stopped for a second. He wanted to puke. The world swam around him, and the lights blurring even more into threads of light instead of steady singular points.
Time stopped. His heart beat too loud, too slow. He tasted cheap whiskey on his lips, and sweat too.
He shoved himself onwards, always onwards.
Grass changed into dirt under his feet. That was strange. There was concrete and stone around the Institute, no dirt. He blinked again. It didn’t really help.
There were no buildings around him anymore. There was no one else, either, not even a homeless person. He was inside of a park, or some woods, and he was alone. He checked his phone. It slipped out of his hand, because it could register in his mind that he didn’t have any network.
His knees buckled. He hit the ground hard, wincing, the pain radiating up and down his legs from his kneecaps. The screen of his phone looked shattered, but he didn’t know if he could trust his eyes right now.
Jace sat there, on his knees. He didn’t know how to think.
“I thought I’d heard something.”
The voice was soft and sharp at the same time. Deep, and familiar. Jace tried to look up but his head pounded and swam and he felt pulled down by the alcohol in his veins. He couldn’t deal with this anymore.
“Please make it go away.” A second voice said, blurry and hoarse, words smushed together, barely recognizable. He frowned. Was that his voice?
A person walked up to him. He saw feet first, bare on the ground, skin brown and beautiful. There were small leaves on the tip of the toes. No. That wasn’t right. Nailpolish?
The person crouched down, foreign fingers gently grabbing Jace’s chin to lift it up. He let himself be moved, eyes struggling to see who the person was. Long, wavy black hair that wrapped around a golden brown man with dark eyes and scars like the strong, gnarled roots of big trees like the ones in Brocelind Forest. Was he in Brocelind Forest?
“Oh, Shadowhunter,” the man said, so softly. “I’ve never seen a man in such a pitiful state.”
Meliorn. The voice was so familiar that Jace wanted to cry. Seelie court.
Jace didn’t realize he’d moved until his hands were clutching the man’s tunic, hard. “Please.” He didn’t know what he was asking. “Please make it go away.”
Meliorn didn’t seem to care about how Jace’s grip was threatening to tear apart his clothing. He grabbed him, pulled him to his feet firmly and Jace felt like he was falling.
He was dragged away from the phone that was still on the ground, but he didn’t care. Nothing mattered right now. His head was still swimming, swimming in ginger and musk and deep, deep earth. Swimming as his feet hit a ground covered in carpets and fabrics.
“Please,” Jace whispered again, when Meliorn stopped walking. “Please, please, please.”
Meliorn watched him, he could see that, feel that, electrifying his bones. Fingers reached to pull off his jacket. “I’m going to take care of you now,” Meliorn whispered. “Oh, poor young Shadowhunter.”
Jace shook his head, lunging forward, grabbing at the man again with renewed strength. Clumsily, his lips hit the man’s cheek, the corner of Meliorn’s mouth, searched for him. Searched for a kiss.
A force moved Jace’s body without him thinking, an awkward, muted and clumsy assault, and Meliorn chuckled, surprised. He kissed him back, hard, ardent, shoving against his mouth. It had nothing of the pretty elegant way Jace had seen him kiss before. His mind stopped working. Jace breathed in when Meliorn pulled back, deep, clean, and the biggest breath he’d taken in what seemed like years, but was probably just days.
Meliorn looked at him, a sickening fondness in his gaze. “I’m not one to sleep with inebriated people, Shadowhunter-”
“No,” Jace slurred. “Jace. Not Shadowhunter. Jace.”
Meliorn smiled at him, the first smile Jace had ever actually seen on his face. It was blinding, and it was so strange that Jace almost took a step backwards. Meliorn stopped him. A hand in greasy hair that should have been washed days ago, he pulled Jace to him.
“I’m going to make an exception, Jace,” he whispered. “You sound so desperate… And I know you need me.”
Jace nodded, eyelids half closed. Meliorn was so close, not kissing him yet, but just hovering there. He could feel his breath against his lips. “Please,” he whispered again, and he hated and loved how needy he sounded. “Please, make it go away.”
Meliorn’s smile turned a little too sweet, almost pitying, and Jace’s hands pushed him back for that. Meliorn didn’t let him. He pulled him even closer, until Jace couldn’t feel anything but relief and Meliorn’s body against him, lithe, so different from what Jace was used to, in both training and sex.
“I’ve never…” Jace mumbled, gesturing clumsily at Meliorn.
“Don’t worry. I’ve got you.”
Jace let go.

Elle’s 2020-21 Bingo Masterlist
Tumblr media
The Seelie Realm - Seeking Peace | Jace/Meliorn
Jace feels the grounding connection of the Alliance Rune fade away he finds himself drawn to the Seelie Realm, and to the one person who can help him keep from losing it entirely.
Shadowhunter!Magnus - Chosen Family | Magnus & Ragnor & Catarina
“Three go in, three go out,” Magnus, Ragnor, and Catarina say together. “Let’s do this,” Magnus adds, facing the small nest of ravener demons with a wicked grin on his face.
Hunt - A Very Successful Hunt | Clary/Isabelle
When Clary shows up at the Institute, Izzy falls for her hard and fast. Unfortunately, a few mixed signals leave each of them thinking their pining is one-sided until they're finally forced to talk about the unspoken tension between them.
Rivals - Take My Hand, Wreck My Plans | James/Cordelia
Cordelia does her best to sift through her conflicted thoughts and emotions after seeing James and Grace together.
Drunk Confessions - Want the Same Things | Jace/Simon
After Clary kisses Jace in the Seelie Realm, Simon can hardly blame her - after all, if he were in her position he would've kissed Jace, too. He just doesn't mean to admit that to Jace.
Enemies to Lovers - Had to Go Too Far to Know How Far to Go | Jace/Andrew
After growing closer to, and rather fond of, Andrew Underhill, Jace feels particularly betrayed to discover that Andrew's the one turning him in for sneaking out all the time.
Vampire!Alec - Married to the Dark | Alec & Simon (background Malec)
“You’re doing this tonight, aren’t you?” “Simon…” “Don’t lie to me, Alec. Those were goodbyes.” Simon doesn’t phrase it as a question. “Yeah, they were,” Alec answers anyway. “Obviously, I don’t expect you to be the one to do it. I’ll find someone else, just don’t tell the others.” “That’s the thing,” Simon says. “I don’t want to, but I also don’t want you to go to anyone else. If you are going to go through with this… I’ll do it.”
Meet Ugly - I’ve Never Been a Natural (All I Do Is Try Try Try) | Simon/Raphael
“What gave you that impression?” Simon shakes his head. It’s beginning to dawn on him that Raphael doesn’t remember, and he isn’t sure if that makes it better or worse. “You told me, the first time we met. The night you… uh…” Simon really doesn’t want to say ‘the night you kidnapped me’, given everything they’ve worked through to put that rather unfortunate first meeting behind them. Simon clears his throat instead. “When I wouldn’t sit still, you said you really hated fidgeting.” --- Simon's kept that one tidbit in the back of his mind the whole time he's known Raphael, and is usually a lot better about keeping still than he's being that night.
Two Person Love Triangle - Truth Be Told | Magnus/Alec
When Magnus is tasked with getting close to Alec in order to get information on his father Robert, he doesn't expect to like Alec even half as much as he does. And that, well, that's definitely a problem now.
Shadowhunter!Simon -  Love Me When It Hurts (1/3) | Jace/Simon, endgame Raphael/Jace/Simon
Jace isn't ready to lose Simon when he dies - and the vampire blood in Simon's system means he doesn't need to. But will the complications of Simon's new existence as a vampire be more than the couple can overcome, especially when they find Raphael ingrained into their lives more than any of them were ready for?
Children of the Night - Love Me When It Hurts (2/3) | Jace/Simon , endgame Raphael/Jace/Simon
Simon returns as a vampire and struggles to strike a comfortable balance between his old and new lives.
Getting Back Together -  Love Me When It Hurts (3/3) | Raphael/Jace/Simon
Raphael does his best to help Simon and Jace reconnect, and in the process finds himself growing more fond of Jace than he ever intended on. Not that it matters, because once Simon and Jace are back together he'll be out of the picture entirely... right?
Rune Ceremony -  All I’ve Ever Known Is How to Hold My Own | Kit/Ty
Kit can't help but feel as if something - or someone - is missing from an important moment in his life.
Forbidden Love - Forbidden Feelings | Magnus/Alec, past Magnus/Camille
It occurs to Magnus that perhaps, somewhere along the way during his very extensive life, something got a little turned around.
Because the love that’s supposed to feel ‘forbidden’ to him - the sort of love that feels like he’s tempting fate, like he knows he shouldn’t want it as much as he does - should probably be the ‘love’ (if it was ever truly ‘love’) from the manipulative woman in front of him.
It certainly shouldn’t be the kind and compassionate love from a Shadowhunter who stops to ask if a raincheck is okay while being ordered into a potentially life-or-death demon attack debriefing.
Potions Gone Wrong - Just Enough to Get By | Magnus/Alec, Magnus & Jace
When Alec gets attacked by a rogue warlock, Jace goes against direct orders to contact Magnus to try and save his injured and slowly dying parabatai.
Free Space - Making Time for What Matters | Luke & Alec, background Malec & Luke/Maryse
Alec and Luke both have a bad habit of overworking, often at the expense of their personal lives. At least they're getting better at looking out for each other, even when they aren't looking out for themselves.
Long Distance - Go the Distance | Lorenzo/Andrew
Andrew is more than a little worried about he and Lorenzo spending a month apart so early in their relationship, but it leaves them with some valuable lessons about communication.
Arranged Marriage - I Don’t Want to Say I (I Want to Say We) | Lorenzo/Andrew, background Malec
When Andrew overhears that Lorenzo - who he's been secretly dating for months now - is going to be forced into an arranged marriage with a shadowhunter, he does the only thing he can: he volunteers.
Shadowhunter!Raphael - Come Around | Raphael/Jace/Simon
Jace wonders if there's more to the frequent requests for him at the New York Institute than meets the eye, and decides to test a theory...
Bodyswap -  If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long | Magnus/Alec & Simon/Isabelle
When a potion goes wrong, Magnus and Simon switch bodies. It's up to Magnus to figure out how to fix it, and up to Simon to control Magnus' magic enough to use it in the final steps.
Sex Club - The Right Company | Jace/Simon
Simon makes a joke about Jace and the other leather-clad Shadowhunters that leads to some interesting potentialities he hadn't considered before.
Marriage - Your Happiness is My Own | Gabriel/Cecily
Gabriel arranges a surprise for Cecily on their wedding day.
Traveling - Take Me With You - Jace/Simon
When Jace gets assigned as Simon's bodyguard during his upcoming tour, he certainly doesn't plan on growing as fond of the musician as he does.
Rivals - Take My Hand, Wreck My Plans | James/Cordelia, Cordelia & Matthew
Cordelia does her best to sift through her conflicted thoughts and emotions after seeing James and Grace together.
Best Friends to Lovers - Make This Leap | Clary/Simon
Whatever Simon has to say, she’ll handle it. She’ll be ready. “I’m in love with you.” She isn’t ready for that. --- A Clary POV of Simon's confession of love in 2x08
Proposal - your heart was glass (i dropped it) | Magnus/Alec
After breaking down, Magnus tries to push himself to get through the lovely dinner Alec set up for them... but he quickly realizes this wasn't meant to be a typical dinner date.
