So, I've created two Jellicle OC's for The Sims 4 Legacy Challenge I'm working on and by far, I'm digging Periwinkle because his name makes me think of that purple cat from Blues Clues and his fur design turned out so adorable. Just know that I've used a Jellicle Generator created by Eli, but I've modified the characters to the way I want them to be. I don't know what to do with Blarney because I want to use Periwinkle for the legacy challenge. I feel like not many people use male sims for their legacies and I love male characters very much. Anyway, I hope you like them!

🎉Mistocord Summer Event🌲
Tumblr media
Week 1 - Welcome to the Wilderness
For our introductory week of our Summer Event, the focus is on those first few exciting days of Summer Camp. The grounds must be established, the tents pitched, and the wonder of the wilderness begins to set in. Our Jellicles will be embarking on hikes, wildlife surveys, and spending much of their time getting to know the stomping grounds of Lake Jellicle National Park.
Sunday 3rd: Community Canvas - Campsite Hustle This week's Community Canvas will see your OCs exploring the camp grounds, getting to know each other, and taking their first tentative steps into the wild. Draw your OC to match a preset pose, and submit your art to us so they can be added into the picture!! 20 slots are available this week starting on Sunday. To claim a character slot, reply in the #cc-claims channel in the Event category on Mistocord - or alternatively, reply to the Community Canvas post on Tumblr when it is posted. You will recieve a png file of the slot you've chosen to use as sizing reference. Your submission must be completed in time for the reveal on Saturday 9th. This is an art challenge open to both Tumblr and Discord community members. These slots are first-come-first-serve. If you aren't able to secure a slot this week, don't worry! There will be two more opportunities to participate in the Community Canvas throughout the duration of the Event!
Monday 4th: Quick Fic Challenge - Adventure Prompt Munkustrap is taking a cohort of plucky campers out on a hiking trail, but things inevitably go awry. Write about the group (canon characters/OCs) running into some sort of trouble in the forest, and how they are able to get out of it again. While our prompt is optional, we recommend it. Please do your best to adhere to the theme of the event. If you'd like, feel free to post your works in the #fanfic-submissions channel in the Event category on Mistocord on the 4th!
Wednesday 6th: Artist Challenge - Wildlife Prompt Alonzo has given each camper a Spotter's Guide to Wildlife in order to conduct a survey. Draw the campers (canon characters/OCs) discovering and encountering different wild animals whilst out on the trail. While our prompt is optional, we recommend it. Please do your best to adhere to the theme of the event. If you'd like, feel free to post your works in the #art-submissions channel in the Event category on Mistocord on the 6th!
Friday 8th: Movie Night - The Cat Returns (Studio Ghibli) Come join us in the Mistocord VC for our weekly film! 23:59GMT 'High school student Haru rescues a cat from traffic and discovers the cat is actually a prince. The Cat King invites her to marry his son, and Haru is brought to the Cat Kingdom where she starts to develop feline features. When she is prevented from leaving, the Baron and Toto, two statues that have magically been given life, provide assistance in gaining her freedom.' This is a Mistocord exclusive event. Mic muting will not be mandatory, and you may chat during the film if you choose. Individuals will have the option on their own Discord client to mute others if they'd prefer a silent viewing, and a guide on how to do so will be explained to new users of the platform.

A trolley car for the Cats OC meme?
IM BACK BABY!
Ok so! I want to get back on the oc making train and I’m going to start with the three prompts that have been sitting in my inbox for MONTHS. Once I’m done with these 3 I will put out the request for more one word prompts for the Jellicle OC challenge 2: electric boogaloo. So without further ado...
This lovely lad is named Teagan. He is a a brown Scottish fold cat with grayish green eyes.
Tumblr media
Teagan’s life started off fairly uneventful all things considered. He was born to relatively small liter in a relatively normal household. Once the kits were of a decent age they were all handed off to new families of their own. Teagan was taken off to household consisting of one father, a grandmother, and a pair of rambunctious twins. Teagan often found himself bearing witness to their common mischief, as well as the reprimands from their frustrated grandmother. He quite enjoyed it, made things interesting.
The quaint apartment the family called home fascinated Teagan, especially how much fun it was to scratch at the flowing curtains and wooden furniture. Shortly after making this discovery however, the father decided it would be best that Teagan not be kept home alone during the day while the family was about. Thus, Teagan began accompanying the man to work. This is where things got interesting.
While the children went off to school during the day and grandma went off to something called “bingo”, Teagan would be taken with father to work. Father worked as a driver for a large two storied red vehicle that Teagan learned was called a “Trolley”. Teagan would find himself plopped in fathers lap as he drove across the city with all sorts of interesting people on board. Teagan quickly learned that people liked his presence, and, as the scratches and treats became a regular occurrence, he found the feeling was mutual. It came to the point a lot of the riders came especially for him, and eventually father gave him a little uniform of his own in the form of a plaid bow tie.
These days of riding on the trolley were the norm, the only thing breaking the norm being periodic trips to the local pub on the weekends. Most of the time father would go alone to be with friends (while the twins had grandma watching them), but if the trolley had run late that day Teagan found himself carted along to establishment as well. There he received the same pleasant treatment as he received on the trolley, and the raucous nature of the place gave Teagan plenty of excitement compared to his normal day to day life. That is, until the day the folks from the train arrived.
Teagan met Skimbleshanks on one of the late trolley days in the pub. He arrived with a group of train yard workers on a break, and immediately Teagan did not like him. The Tom gave off an air of self importance and sureness in his demeanor that ruffled his whiskers. Plus, the orange Tom began taking away all the attention Teagan had grown used to! He refused to let it stand, so he decided to take a note from some of the twins occasional mischief and attempt deal with the problem himself...
Skimbleshanks began noticing unusual occurrences whenever he visited the Tavern. Pints regularly being ‘accidentally’ spilled on his head, his tail getting caught in swinging doors, old curtains falling on his head, etc. For a while he chalked it up to bad luck, until one day he caught a small kit casually tipping one of those precarious pints over the edge of a table.
Skimbleshanks quickly confronted the mischievous kit, reprimanding him for his unseemly behavior like a disappointed father. Teagan didn’t appreciate the lecture however, and, rather than an apology, Skimble received a hiss and a bat on the nose for his trouble.
While the small attack didn’t cause any damage, it did get the attention of the feline’s respective humans who quickly moved to intervene. As the two cats were separated they could only watch as the trolley and train humans began to bicker, each accusing the others cat of starting the whole mess. It got to a point where the bartender had to come to break the whole mess up!
Skimble was none too pleased with the events of course, but Teagan was more than thrilled. He got to show the other Tom who was in charge and didn’t get in any trouble at all! It would be a while before Skimble would return with the train humans to the pub after that particular incident, but it only served to increase Teagans excitement. As long as there was a precariously placed drink to be spilt or a door to be swung shut, Teagan would be ready. This little rivalry was sure to make the average day a whole lot more interesting!

finally gave in and made myself a jellicle OC 🤧
(Special thank you to @tantomiles for their jellicle oc generator website that helps me brainstorm this! the post HERE if any of you interested!!)
haven’t figured out like all the story and stuff (I’m bad at that hdhsjsj) but here goes nothing!
Meet Citrine!
She’s a tabby cat with golden hue for her fur. She’s a stray but ones that get taken care of by some of the residents. Was born without her left eye and she covered it with a bandage that sometimes she paint over in her fur color.
She doesn’t talk or sing much and prefers to observes. She will still joins in when it’s time to sing and dance together but otherwise she’d be in weird places observing and sketching away. She LOVES the jellicle ball though, because of how magical it is and never fails to inspire her!
Mostly hangs out with Mr. Mistoffeeles when he’s practicing because she loves seeing all the colors and glitters. Has HUUUGGGEE crush on Bombalurina and Rumpleteazer but kept it only in her secret sketchbook. But if you’re lucky you might see her yearning from far away 😳

Freya, the Operatic Queen
I finally came up with a Jellicle OC, which is something I truthfully never thought I would do!
However, seeing such wonderful posts from @the-cat-at-the-theatre-door, @theimpossiblescheme, @1taliart-stargayce, and @storyweaverofgondor (please let me know if you want me to remove tagging any of you) where they introduce and breath life into original characters or swing Cats from the many productions of CATS over the last 40 years has inspired me to create a character of my own.
Admittedly, she is a bit self-indulgent, as Freya allows me to expand and connect my headcannons for characters, but that is part of the appeal of CATS! It allows for insertions like this which do not detract from the main show, but do help expand the background relationships and histories of characters.
The amazing Jemi created art for her here.
Here are my headcannons for Freya, along with other headcannons that she plays into. It is below the cut as it is a bit long:
Three Words: Sensitive, Caring, Genuine
Named after the Norse goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, and gold, who rides a chariot pulled by two cats. (Also named Freya because I ADORE Freya Rowley who was in CATS (2019) as Jellylorum, Tantomile in the UK Tour 2014, and a Swing in the UK Tour 2013).
Breed and appearance wise, Freya would be a Traditional (Doll-Faced) white Persian, or a solid white Norwegian Forest Cat, with striking gold eyes. (For those unfamiliar with cat breeds, a longhaired, fluffy white cat).
Freya is Victoria’s and Mistoffelees’ mother, and she is the sister of Bustopher Jones.
Freya and her brother were both bred as showcats, something that neither enjoyed. Bustopher was the cat who was did better in shows as he was easier to handle and would cooperate for food. Freya would caterwaul and generally did not like to be picked up. She believes cats should be judged on their personality and not on their appearance.
Her and Bustopher were close in childhood, but their lives begin to diverge as they got older, with Bustopher becoming too used to luxury and pampering (as he is adopted to a wealthy family), something that Freya never felt comfortable with.
Freya has a modest home with her human, a professional classical musician, trained in piano and violin, who exposed her to all types of music. Freya most enjoys the operas, arias, and symphonies.
Freya is a stubborn Queen and a perfectionist. She accepts nothing less than the best from everyone, and is even more so expectant at the theatre. Some Cats regarded her as difficult, a fact that she was not one to challenge. In her heart, she knew what she trying to achieve, and that those close to her would appreciate it.
Freya is able to harness the power and magic of the Jellicle Moon, something she found out during her coming of age, which her daughter will discover in the same fashion. Freya’s magical ability manifests itself in the way she sings, so sweetly and so powerfully, instantly eliciting strong emotion. Her voice can be heard far and wide, and it was unmistakable.
The kittens’ father, a Cat who also possesses some power and magic of the Jellicle Moon, is only known to Freya, who takes the secret to her grave.
In a role to protect and support the Tribe, Freya is a lookout and a Cat who alerts the Tribe of danger, as her voice carries over large distances. She does not fight unless absolutely necessary, but is able to take care of herself if required.
Freya sadly passes away fairly young from sickness when Victoria and Mistoffelees are kittens. Although her death does not register much with them at the time, as they are young and not quite able to understand fully, her impression left on them is undeniable. She has embossed her children’s lives with her existence, and the way they express themselves is a derivation of who their mother was.
Freya called Victoria her ‘piccola luna‘ (little moon) and Mistoffelees her ‘luce stellare‘ (starlight). They mean so much to her, and it absolutely destroys her that she will not be in her kittens’ lives physically as they grow older.
She was best friends with Jellylorum and close friends with Grizabella and Jennyanydots, as they were all involved in theatre performances with Gus and Asparagus. Jelly and Griz are more performers, while Jenny and Asparagus are the ones who help prepare and organized the shows. Jenny is the primary costume fabricator, and does occasionally bring her mice and cockroaches to perform in shows.
Knowing her life remaining is short after becoming ill, Freya asks Jellylorum to continue raising Victoria and Mistoffelees on her behalf. It is the hardest conversation Freya will ever have, as she never wanted to admit that she needed help. It also the hardest for Jelly, who was not necessarily prepared for the request (years later, Jelly would again be dealt with a difficult situation, needing to tend to the increasing declining health of Gus), so soon after learning that the Queen she regarded as a sister was dying. Jelly selflessly accepts the request, promising Freya that she would take care of her kittens until the end of her current life. She would never let her down in any capacity, laying down her life if needed.
Jellylorum is initially a bit overwhelmed taking care of two more kittens, and starts to rely on Jenny for assistance, creating a unbreakable queerplatonic partnership between the two, and initializing the future Mom Duo who take care of everyone, especially the kittens of the Tribe. Jelly credits Freya for pushing her and Jenny closer, without knowing it of course. The Everlasting Cat works in unique ways, and Jelly was happy to find someone who understands that romance should not be the forefront of a relationship.
Grizabella, although sad that Freya has passed, begins to realize that she has no competition for stardom with her gone (not that Freya wanted fame; on the contrary, she wanted to forget her show days and live quietly), and begins to change. Grizabella starts to feel like she has been ignored and taken for granted by the theatre group, who in her mind have held her back from her dreams. As Jelly and Jenny begin to focus most of their energy in helping to raise their kittens, they spend less time at the theatre, and Grizabella begins to feel alone. She grows more distant from the theatre group and the tribe as a whole, eventually leaving in search of her dreams of the Glamour Cat, and the recognition she believes she deserves.
Victoria and Mistoffelees have inherited some of the magic from their parents, which would not be known to them until they have grown up, and is something is discovered by both of them when coming of age.
Their mother never explicitly told them that they may grow up to be tied to the Jellicle Moon, as she never got the chance, and they were too young. She could feel that her kittens had the same, if not more, power than she had. She wanted her kittens to be able to understand for themselves their inherited magic. The only other Cat who was told this was Jelly when Freya asked her to take care them. Jelly does not say a word to anyone, even Jenny, in her time raising the kittens.
Victoria first feels the power of the Jellicle Moon within herself during the White Cat Solo. It is a nervous energy that she never quite has felt and guides her movements throughout. She looks to the Moon for guidance and falls into a trance. Time slows down and Victoria is flooded with the memories of her first dancing for her mother, their paws together following a rhythm. Then the memory of Victoria’s first solo dance, the pride in Freya’s golden eyes watching her daughter move more elegantly than she ever could imagine. There is familiarity and comfort to the trance, wrapping around her and warming inside, and Victoria realizes that her mother Freya is shining down on her. Her mother has always been beside her in spirit, looking down from the Heaviside Layer, proud to watch her little moon become the Queen she is. She also feels this power leading the Ball, where the energy is a focused burning inside of her. Victoria feels less burdened by uncertainty knowing that Freya is close to her, even if she can only sense it. Freya’s pride for Victoria is bestowed upon her now, as her mother always thought that she would be a special Queen, purer than she could be, and a beacon of light shining at even the darkest of times.
Mistoffelees first discovers his connection to the Jellicle Moon when alone one night, not long before the annual Ball. The same nervous energy felt by Victoria is felt also by Misto, but manifests in the form of electricity. At first he is scared of his powers, but as beings to discover more he reigns in control of them, and learns how to perform other feats of magic. He keeps this to himself initially, until he has to explain to a curious beast onlooker how he just teleported himself from one pile of trash to another, when he thought he was curled up by the fire. He makes Tugger swear to not say anything, which may otherwise hurt his standing with the Jellicles, considering their past with Macavity. Rescuing Old Deuteronomy is the first time Mistoffelees shows his abilities to the Tribe, much to their surprise, and perhaps fright?
Freya would act beside Gus as Griddlebone in performances of Growltiger’s Last Stand, which was the highlight of any theatre performance put on by the Jellicles. She loved to sing the operatic highs of the Lover's Duet and let herself be dramatic as the flamboyant Queen, showing her less serious side that was somewhat hidden in apprehension.
In honour of Freya, the theatre group continues on the performances of Growltiger, where Jellylorum dresses up like the Operatic Queen, in a costume of a fluffy white cat. It keeps Freya’s legacy alive with the Tribe, and allows Victoria and Mistoffelees to have some physical connection with their mother, something that Jelly feels is her duty to create.

My Cats OC
hello everyone! i decided to go through with my decision to post about my cats oc. I originally created her on my Quotev account (https://www.quotev.com/myhticalsmoshsvu) so if you would like to see more specifics about her there then you can go there.
also i do not have any images of my oc because i cannot draw to save my life! so it will just be a text post for now! but again please let me know what you think of her.
so my character is named kiki and she is a young kitten. her father is munkustrap and her mother (an original character of my own) is named graciette. she was their first kitten and right away munkustrap was smitten with this little kitten of his. not long after kiki was born, when she was still a tiny newborn, graciette just abruptly left the tribe without any warning and has not been heard from since. this left munkustrap to all of a sudden raise a tiny little kitten all on his own. he has risen to the challenge of being a single dad but it has been hard on him. however several members of the tribe have really stepped up to help munkustrap with raising his daughter and have treated her as their own kitten.
anyways that is all for tonight as i am very tired, it is super late where i live and i need to sleep! let me know what you guys think of kiki and if you want to hear about any headcanons related to kiki or any relationships between her and any of the other jellicles just let me know! (sorry this is short but is almost 2:30 am and i am falling asleep writing this lol)

How did you come up with Quasi? What was your inspiration?
Well, Hestia had been my only main OC for a while (not counting the minor ones in my short like the ghost siblings and her kids), and I knew that I wanted some new OCs that I could put some development into and work on like I did with Hestia!
So I used a random generator for his name and appearance (I believe it’s linked on my blog somewhere?) until I liked what I got, and I kind of created him from there. I’m honestly not really sure where the idea of him being a henchcat came from, but I knew that I wanted him to be a former henchcat. I hadn’t seen many henchcat OCs besides @storyweaverofgondor‘s OC, and I thought it was such a cool concept, a former henchcat who changes their ways, or maybe never had a chance to be an actual cat or a Jellicle.
I wanted to give him some kind of past with the Jellicles also, a reason that he wouldn’t immediately go to them after leaving Macavity, so that’s where the whole backstory with the Jellicle attack came from, and why I had Munkustrap give him the scar across his nose. It adds some angst, and gives him a negative past with the Jellicles.
But at the same time, I wanted Quasi to be lovable. I didn’t want him to be this hardened, mean street cat who’s only trying to survive. I wanted him to still have fun, to still have a sense of humor. So balancing that is still a little difficult, since I don’t want to diminish the past and the hurt he’s gone through in any way. It’s really “Quasi uses humor as a way to cope with trauma because he doesn’t know any other way to cope”.
Also, Quasi’s a bit of a challenge! I’ve never had a main male OC, so writing him is always really fun, and a little difficult. But I really love him, and all the love that he’s gotten just makes me really happy. And there is another short for him in the works that should be posted this weekend!

Week 2 - Lakeside Adventures
A quick thank you to all who participated in last week's prompts and activities!! I'd like to consider our first week of our Summer Event a success, so let's move into our second! Lake Jellicle National Park is unsurprisingly named after the beautiful lake that sits in the center of the valley. There’s all sorts of activities to take part in, including fishing, swimming, boating, and more! The big question is: Are Jellicle Cats fond of water?
Monday 11th Community Canvas - Making a Splash This week's Community Canvas will be sure to tide you all over! Your OC's have had a busy week at camp, and now they've got a whole day of free-time to spend by the lake! Just like before, draw your OC to match a preset pose, and submit your art to us so they can be added into the picture!! 20 slots are available this week starting on Monday. To claim a character slot, reply in the #cc-claims channel in the Event category on Mistocord - or alternatively, reply to the Community Canvas post on Tumblr when it is posted. Your submission must be completed in time for the reveal on Sunday 17th. This is an art challenge open to both Tumblr and Discord community members. These slots are first-come-first-serve. If you aren't able to secure a slot this week, don't worry! There will be one more opportunity to participate in the Community Canvas in the final week of our event!
Tuesday 12th Quick Fic - Fishing Prompt Lake Jellicle is home to all sorts of wildlife, but most notibly, it holds an incredibly diverse array of fish. Old Deuteronomy believes that the best way to learn about the native species is to catch them. Write about the campers being taken out to the lake for a fishing trip! While our prompt is optional, we recommend it. Please do your best to adhere to the theme of the event. A dagger for the Cats OC meme?
Oh fun! I’ve actually been working on this character for a long time, good to finally talk about him. :3
Nedjem is a gray chartreux cat. He has orange eyes and is roughly 6 years old.
Tumblr media
Nedjem grew up on the streets like all other strays, though unlike some he was abandoned by his mother once he was a few months old. He quickly found his way into the underground fighting scene, helping clean up the fighters after matches. He quickly grew camaraderie with the cats, stitching up wounds and iceing bruises. In return, they taught him how to defend himself and fight in the ring. They gave him a family.
Once Nedjem was a year old he was walking in an alley when he was attacked by a rogue band of cats. Nedjem fought fair, like he had always been taught, but the cats outnumbered and beat him brutally. He barely managed to make it back to the ring he called home, and as he recovered he silently learned a valuable lesson. In the outside world, no one fights fair.
So, without his caretakers knowing, he began practicing fighting with weapons. Broken bottles, nails, rocks, whatever he could find he would practice with. One day he noticed a strange group of human children in uniforms, he watched them pass and silently noticed something red slide out of one of their pockets. Picking it up he discovered that the red object possessed a number of tools and weapons hidden inside. Thus, Nedjem began to practice with a pocket knife.
Tumblr media
Nedjem began moving through the streets under cover of darkness, attacking roving bands of scavengers and ultimately getting revenge by killing the band of cats who had once attacked him. Soon his actions were discovered by the ring and they gave him a choice: give up the knife or leave. Nedjem tried to explain why what he was doing was and felt right, but as the sun began to peak over the horizon he was on the street once more. Once again without a family.
Nedjem went immediately back to his vigilante work, attacking bands of strays with brutality. His attacks escalated as his rage and despair of being abandoned by his family grew, but they also got sloppier. One day Nedjem moved to ambush a pack of cats, he attacked swiftly and mercilessly, but suddenly found a paw wrapped firmly around his neck. He froze as bright yellow eyes illuminated his own, as he felt a blinding pain crash through his skull. Then it was dark.
For the next few days Nedjem laid in the corner of a small cage in a warehouse. He was exhausted and the pounding in his head grew worse with every passing moment. He faintly recalled someone had explained what had happened, he had been cursed to die a painful slow death unless he agreed to join Macavity. He resisted for as long as he could, trying to think of his home and the life he had foolishly abandoned. It wasn’t long though until finally the pain became unbearable and he relented.
Nedjem became one of Macavity’s most feared hit men, relentless and brutal in his methods. Nedjem did not resist or talk back, terrified of the pain that had nearly ended him for good. He quietly reassured himself that he was in control and could still choose to do when he went out to attack. The cats he was attacking were criminals, if he focused on that he could ignore the fact that he was a criminal now too.
Then he got an order, a Queen was conspiring with a rival clan and needed to be taken out. Nedjem went to where the queen was trading her information, a small alleyway next to a large tavern. He waited silently until the queen appeared, but immediately felt his stomach turn. She was as small as a kitten, with pure white fur a purple collar with a pretty gem pinned to it. She was so young, barely older than a kitten and looking around hopefully for whoever she was supposed to meet. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t hurt an child.
He jumped out of his spot, startling the queen as she bared her claws and hissed. He opened his mouth to warn her, tell her to run to hide to do anything but stay in that alley... but then he felt a blinding familiar pain. As the curse took hold he had no power to resist or fight, no control over his body, and when he returned to his senses the deed had already been done. Something broke inside Nedjem that night... something broke beyond repair. Any resistance he had and any hope to one day go home to his family... just shattered.
Other cats will whisper about the red blade, the most terrifying assassin Macavity has ever hired. Cats say he is bloodthirsty, a psychopath, a demon. Cats say he takes joy out of torturing the young and defenseless. Cats say he shows no mercy, and they are right. He never shows mercy or spares any victim.
He doesn’t have a choice.

What to Do with Your StEx OCs Now that You Got Them - Part I
You’ve been in this fandom for awhile now, and you’ve encountered an unexpected problem. Oh, you’re having fun alright. You’ve learned about so many different kinds of trains and have so many ideas for OCs. There’s that McDonald’s dining car, the school car, the movie-theater car, the disco car as well as a few fanbabies for your OTP(s), a new trainsona, and a few cabooses. You look at your OC roster, and a nagging question comes to your mind: “What do I do with all these characters now?”
OCs can be divided into three categories: fanfic OCs (which can include characters in fan comics or fan videos), RPG OCs (which can include ask blog OCs, depending upon the creator), and what I like to call “doll OCs.” Doll OCs are just what they sound like: they are the mental equivalent of being inside your room and playing with your Barbie dolls. They exist just to please yourself. Where it is totally okay for you to have your Barbie doll be a half-angel, half-mermaid, half-Veela, half-fairy princess who is totally the smartest, bravest magic user who flies the Millennium Falcon against Darth Vader and Jareth (and becomes Jareth's bride in the end), doll OCs are the ones that you use for your own imagination to express yourself.
Doll OCs include those OCs who only exist because you wanted to design a costume ("Hey, look! This is what I think a female engine would look like!"), OCs who only exist because you wanted to take an existing actor and turn them into an OC ("Hey, if Jeffrey Daniel is the original Electra, then this is what Prince and Diana Ross would look like as trains!"), avatar/persona OCs, ask-blog OCs (though these can double as RPG characters depending upon the creator), joke/crack characters ("An animal truck who carries serpents -- Snakes on a Train!"), and basically any character that you created for your own amusement and/or for an intellectual/artist challenge. This can even include an OC that you like for xir back story but can’t really think of an actual fic to insert xem in. So, you can make xem the most Mary Suey-ish Mary Sue that ever Mary Sued because this is done for your pleasure. You don’t even have to research trains for these OCs - have yourself a merry little caboose who can turned into a steam locomotive at will and who can hop dimensions to play with the Jellicle tribe!
When you look at your McDonald’s dining car, you probably have had this thought: “I must do something with my OC, or I will be wasting an idea.” However, the thing with doll OCs is that you don’t need to feel pressured to do anything with them. If all you do is draw pictures of your OC, you’re doing something valuable: you’re practicing your drawing skills. If all you do is design different outfits, you’re doing something valuable: you’re practicing your design skills. If all you do is tinker with the back story and figure out how that affects your character’s personality, you’re doing something valuable: you’re practicing characterization. Since I’m from Miami, I have a special memories riding the Metromover, so one day I doodled a design for a pair of cars. However, I probably won’t be inserting my OCs into a fanfic anytime soon, unless it’s a cameo. Are my doll OCs wasted then? Nope! They provided both drawing and design practice which then helps me in the long run.
“But weren’t you the one who wrote that readers read fanfiction because they want to see the canon characters do cool stuff?” some of you might ask. “What hogwash are you spewing, you huffing hypocrite?”
It’s true that my StEx tutorials are written for aspiring authors who have moved onto the step in their writing career where they are thinking of what will attract readers, but for some people, they need a doll OC for their own mental health. When my parents divorced, I needed my imagination to cope with my divided family and being forced to move far from my home to where I knew nobody. My doll characters helped me with their excessive dimension hopping, going from Hogwarts to making friends with Digimon. So, if you need a doll character, then have at it. Go wild and let your imagination fly.
However, this does come with a two-part disclaimer. Like almost any aspect of fiction, doll OCs and Mary Sues are okay in and of themselves, but they can become a problem. The first major way is when the OC in question is used to promote something unhealthy. “The canon villain violently raped my OC -- squee! Isn't that just sexy and romantic? She’ll know just what to say to turn him into the perfect boyfriend and become his immortal queen! My OTP foreverz!!!” (Unfortunately, you can find a boatload of these types of fics in just about any of the bigger fandoms.)
The other potential problem with doll OCs occurs when the creator resorts to cyberbullying and Internet temper tantrums over feedback (or lack thereof). Now, if you honestly did not care who read your fic and just posted it on the Internet for your own personal enjoyment, regardless of whether you got any response, and could spend the rest of your life content about not getting any reviews/reblogs at all because it was for your pleasure first and foremost, that's one thing. However, if you honestly did not even once think about the readers’ enjoyment and wrote out your own fantasies and then expect to get 100 reviews telling you that your fic should be the next best seller with a movie deal in the works, you should not be surprised if people pass over your fic and choose not to leave you those 100 glowing reviews, if any at all.
Similarly, if you do get a review which you don’t like, you can’t then turn around and start cyberbullying the person in question.
“This fic isn’t my cup of tea. Sorry.”
“WHAT?! HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT MY GENIUS!!!! I’M GONNA TELL ALL MY INTERNET FRIENDS TO START SENDING YOU DEATH THREATS AND HATE ANONS!!!”
It’s a little like cooking. If you are cooking for yourself and make yourself a deep-fried burrito with sauerkraut, pineapple, Lucky Charms, and chipotle peppers, then you can enjoy it because you made it for yourself. However, if you put in front of a complete stranger, and xe try it and don’t like it, you can’t then start overturning tables and making death threats because you claim xe don’t have the brains to worship the ground you walk on.
“But what if someone is being legitimately mean?” some of you might ask.
In that case, the best thing you can do is ignore xem. “Don’t feed the trolls” is always a good rule of thumb here. Most of the people who resort to bullying are doing it for attention (because negative attention is still attention) and are trying to feel powerful by bothering you. It’s best to ignore xem and not resort to insults yourself: if you’ve ever been on a debate team, you know that a person loses the debate the moment xe start making personal comments about their opponent.
In conclusion, if you’re not promoting something unhealthy or resorting to disproportionate retribution toward reviewers, your doll OCs should not be a problem. Go out and enjoy your mail coach OC who can fly to outer space and who dates Electra, Greaseball, and Thomas while being the lost princess of Sodor!
-- Stay tuned for Part II where we will tackle RPG OCs!
