BINTI JUA

BINTI JUA (born 1988) is a female gorilla who lives in the Brooklyn Zoo in Illinois, Chicago, US.

On 16 August 1996, a boy aged 3 fell into the gorilla's den after climbing on the enclosure wall. Binti, aged 8, walked up to the unconscious boy while zoo visitors screamed with concern. Visitors were worried that Binti would harm the boy - she didn't, instead she helped him. With her 17-month old baby Koola on her back she picked the boy up, cradled him and protected him. She carried him 60ft to an access entrance to give the boy to the workers. The workers easily obtained the boy from Binti and quickly gained medical help for him. The boy had a broken hand and an injury on his face & spent time in hospital but was otherwise okay.

After helping the boy Binti became a hero and was rewarded with many food treats. Today Binti is aged 31.

In 1986 a gorilla, Jambo at Jersey Zoo also rescued a child, aged 5, who fell into the gorilla enclosure and protected the boy until he was rescued by staff. Jambo died in 1992 & there has been a statue of him erected in his honour.

In 2016, a gorilla, Harambe was shot and killed after a boy aged 3 climbed into the gorilla enclosure.
