Anderson's character arrives in the latter half of the season, when she gets word of her daughter's coup. To put it bluntly, she is "appalled" by the news. "Joanna is known as the maestro of marriage because of how she's arranged very high-profile partnerships for her daughters, and so the impact that Catherine's coup has had on her and the ability for her to marry off the rest of her daughters has had consequences," Anderson explains. "So she's come to basically, one, see what the heck Catherine is up to, and two, to see if she can change the course of history."
Anderson says her character's motives should probably be questioned. "I wouldn't trust her, and I think her motivations feel suitably contradictory. It does indeed appear that sometimes she is just incredibly loving, and thoughtful, and completely, appropriately obsessed by her daughters — and then sometimes it does feel like she has very sinister motivations that aren't necessarily taking into consideration the best interest of her children, and that maybe she is just talking s—," she says. Suffice to say, she fits right in.

House of Ascania & of Romanov: Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst aka Catherine the Great
Sophie Auguste Frederike, nicknamed Fike, was born on May 2nd, 1729, to Prince Christian August of Anhalt-Zerbst and his wife Joanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp. Sophie was the oldest child and only surviving daughter of her parents and grew up as a tomboy and received an education by a French governess as it was custom among the nobles of that time.
Her marriage to her second cousin Peter III aka Peter of Holstein-Gottrop was mostly made possible through her maternal descent of the House of Holstein-Gottrop, a wealthy and noble family. Two of her first cousins would later become Kings of Sweden.
Sophie was an intelligent women that loved to read about history and political theory. When she arrived in Russia, she immediately tried to blend in by learning the language and converting to the Russian Orthodox Church. When she was sick and close death once, her mother wanted to call a Lutheran priest but she declined and ask for an Orthodox one which brought her even higher in the favour of Empress Elisabeth.
Her marriage to Peter was unhappy. Both took lovers and did not make a great effort to hide it. There are many children alleged to Sophie but only of two we can say for sure that she is the mother of: Emperor Paul I. of Russia and his sister Grand Duchess Anna who died in infancy. Since both children were immediately taken from her after birth by The Empress, she was never close to either of them.
Sophie became the ruling Empress of Russia after a coup d'état overthrew her Prussian sympathetic husband Peter III. Initially she was only supposed to be the regent for her minor son Paul.
Sophie died on November 17th, 1796, after a stroke. She became 67 years old and is currently the only female ruler who ever received the suffix the Great.
