Something about Dean's childhood being sacrificed in favor of Sam's. Something about Sam judging who Dean is via the results of those sacrifices. Kids ain't supposed to be grateful, they're supposed to eat all your food and break your heart. But Dean was a kid, too. Is the thing.

Quick spn headcanon in case your were having a good day. Whenever sam and Dean get captured, Dean intentionaly provokes the bad guys by being sarcastic and stuff so they would take their anger out on him and leave sam alone (he used to do the same to protect him from John when they were younger)

Thinking about a young Dean, probably around the ages of 5-6 burning his hand on a hot stove because John forced him to make Sam’s bottle up because “You need to learn how to do these things when I’m away.” And John simply lets Dean burn his hand on the stove top, even though he could have easily told him what would happen if he put his hand down, but he doesn’t because “That’s how you learn, Dean.”
And Dean’s screaming in pain and John just turns off the stove, sits Dean down and grabs his hand to see how serious it is before he gets stuff to bandage it. And he tells Dean not to cry, that he needs to be a man now and only babies cry, and at that exact moment Sam starts wailing from his crib and John points at Sam and says, “See? Are you like Sammy, Dean? Are you a baby?” And Dean shakes his head no, tears rolling down his cheeks as he tries to get himself under control. John bandages up his hand, explaining everything he’s doing so Dean can do it himself if it happens again while John is gone.
And then John makes Dean go right back to the stove to keep making Sam his bottle, while Sam still screams at the top of his lungs, and Dean tries to keep his own tears at bay. The throbbing in his hand is so intense that even though he doesn’t make a sound he can’t keep the tears from falling, but he has his back to John so he doesn’t see. And this is the beginning, this is the start of it all, where John stopped being a father and started being a drill sergeant.

I wish Sam could have punched John in the face. Beat him bloody, just truly exploded in early seasons. Shown him exactly what he made him to be in the most tragic way possible.
I would have killed for a scene that went like, Sam and John arguing, John is getting more and more loud, until he is screaming - spit flying, you know: the whole nine yards. Insantly, Sam matches this.
Dean would try and step between them, like he always does. But -Sam pushes him away, with a ferocity he has only seen from his mostly passive brother on hunts.
"Stay out of this Dean!"
Dean would try and say something but a steely look from John shuts him up. He steps back realizing that it's over. This is it. His family is done for.
Can you imagine the shock on John's face, when Sam swings at him. Landing a perfect blow to his nose, breaking it without even trying. Using all of those skills he taught him? Forced him to perfect.
Can you imagine the shock from Dean. Who steps forward a bit, he goes to step between them, terrified of what John will do. He knows what he did when they were defensless, never even dared to talk back. The bruises and the blood.
But then Sam is grabbing John by the collar and he lands another punch. And another. And another, he has him on the ground his knuckles bleeding as he tears them apart, each hit landing harder than the last. Between the blows he is spitting out like poison "I hate you!"
And Dean pulls him off. Dean begs him to stop. He doesnt hit Dean, simply trembles in his arms as he is held back - pushed away.
John just stares.
And stares. He doesn't say a word. Before he wipes the blood from his mouth, and spits some onto the ground eye already swelling up. Lip split.
He stands.
And still says nothing, because Dean is already doing it. Already taking the holy word from his father's mouth. Already starting to lecture Sam, maybe shove his brother a bit.
John doesn't have to say anything.
And in the moment, Sam wishes he killed him.

see i love john winchester. as a character, he slaps. he’s also hot. and i understand him. he’s got so much grief and love inside him but it sometimes rots him from the inside, and he’s a little bit insane at this point, and he’s abusive, but he’s also protective, and he neglects his kids, but he’d also sell his soul for them. he’s so focused on revenge for a love that was predestined for him that he forgets himself sometimes, and he’s complicated, and he’s such a fucking good character.
see i love dean winchester. he’d do anything for his baby brother. he’s loving and fierce and practically raised sam as much as john did. but he’s also abusive. he’d kill anyone to save sam and also lay his life down for his brother but that means owning sam just as much. sam’s body and soul belong to dean. and he’s funny and he’s cute and he’s honorable and he saves people and he’s so fucking handsome and he has daddy issues and childhood trauma and eldest daughter syndrome and anger issues and abandonment issues and he sexualizes himself to control the beauty he’s been cursed with, flaunts it to his gain because that’s the way he’s been used as bait since he was a little kid. and yes he sometimes treats sam like shit--gaslights him, manipulates him. and he’s complicated, and he’s such a fucking good character.
and then there’s sam. there’s no doubt im biased towards him. sam’s the culmination of a long line of familial trauma, a boy with a streak of freak running through him--the grossness was always in his veins. a boy with powers he doesn’t understand, with a life he hates but a family he loves and too young to understand the loss and cycle that got them there. so he rebels and he tries to leave, once he makes it to flagstaff to escape the abuse and the life and dean takes the brunt of it, and when he runs away the second time, he’s told it’s for good. but he can’t escape his fate, so the loss of his father becomes his own and the brother beside him becomes his stronghold, and that means submitting, and that means sacrifice. returning to an abusive relationship of the person who needs him most and the person he needs the most. codependency. and he manipulates right back, lashes out violently to the abuse, hurting dean in the process, and warps himself darkly to his surroundings, and when the freakishness rises to the top, none of them can understand it, except for the devil of the god he’d been praying to all along. and he’s complicated and he’s such a fucking good character.
these are how i understand these characters. so when i say i’m deancrit, or im johncrit, or i hate how dean treats sam or john treats dean or whatever whatever, this is the cycle i’m talking about here. they’re all fucked up. i don’t hate any of them, but to me, to deny the abuse in these relationships would be unthinkable. the power dynamics will always be there. i want people to understand that when i criticize these characters...this is what i mean.

(Tw: noncon, knife play, drugging)
Wincest Unhinged #8 "You walk out that door, dont you ever come back!" John Winchester's voice echoed in his own head. Sam had always been the type to run away, and honestly, John had been the same way at that age, full of rage at his own father who had abandoned him.
'I never abandoned them, I've always been there.' He told himself. 'Sort of…'
John sighed, finishing his beer as the bartender called for last rounds. Maybe there was a chance he could catch up to Sam. He was sure he couldn't convince his youngest to come back, once he had made his mind up about something, that's all there was to it, but he could at least make sure they parted on better terms.
John drove back to the motel, cursing as he fumbled with the key, the light mist of rain clouding his vision as he tried to get the key into the door, and then finally opened the door, and stepped into darkness.
He could hear muffled crying.
'Shit' John thought. Dean had been a wreck since Sam had left, had yelled, thrown everything he could get his hands on, John was certain Dean was gonna throw a punch.
Maybe he deserved it.
John flipped on the overhead light, steeling himself to see his son, and instead saw a naked man tied to the bed Sam had been using the night before, a gag in his mouth.
The man, couldn't be older than 20, looked so much like Sam that John almost yelled out his youngest's name. He turned towards John, eyes wide with terror. He pulled at the restraints.
John tried to shush him, looking around for Dean while bringing his knife out to cut at the ropes. The man screamed into the gag at the sight of the knife, flinched as he was accidentally nicked.
"Fuck, hold still!" John growled, grabbing the man's arm. He felt something warm and wet on his fingers. Slowly he glanced down.
Carved into the guys flesh was a single word; Dean's.
John stumbled back, slamming into the wall, and this time, he actually looked at the scene before him. The bed was covered in blood, the smell of sex and cum in the air, and this guy, who looked exactly Sam, had Dean's name, his fucking claim carved into him atleast a dozen times.
"I didnt think you'd be back yet."
Before he could react to Dean's voice, something slammed into his head, and he was thrown into darkness.
He was tied to a chair. He knew it before he opened his eyes.
"Sammy, Sammy, Sammy…" He could hear Dean's breathy moans.
"Stop!" Another voice yelled; "Please…please I wanna go- ngh!"
John's eyes flew open, watching as the man struggled under Dean, struggled as a wet rag was placed over his mouth and nose, until his eyes rolled back and closed, his whole body going limp on the bed.
"Shh…not going anywhere." Dean said. He looked at his father. "He's not going anywhere…" There was a warning in his voice.
"Dean." John spoke low, trying to not sound disgusted at what he was seeing; "Son, what are you doing?"
"Fucking my brother."
John wondered if Dean had meant for it to sound like he was just asked a stupid question.
The man squirmed, as Dean gave a slow deep thrust, letting out a groan; "Fuck Sammy, always knew youd be tight." John tried not to pay too much attention to the filth Dean was saying as he was fucking, raping, his brother's look alike.
Dean was fucking insane, there was no doubt in John's mind, and maybe he was to blame for it. John had made Sam Dean's entire world, his purpose, and then had shattered it.
A wave of guilt and relief washed over him. "Knew you'd be tight.."
Dean hadn't fucked Sam. Hadn't done this to him.
John Winchester had failed his sons, this was entirely his fault. Taking a deep breath, trying to work past the throb in his head, he worked at the knots.
Dean didnt seem to care one way or the other, the blade in his hand working on tender flesh as he carved. The man's body jerked instinctively at the pain.
"Good, so good." Dean crooned, kissing one of the cuts, his tongue swiping over it. "Gonna wake up with my cum dripping out of you, Sammy, gonna get you a nice plug, use you whenever I want…"
The man's eyes fluttered open, clouded and pained.
Dean kissed him; "There's my boy, my baby brother, love you so much…"
The man looked at John for help.
Finally, the rope gave, and John stumbled forward, catching himself, and straightening.
Silently, John picked up one of the guns off the table beside him, and pointed it at the man's head. "What's your name?" He asked.
"Collin…" He groaned, whimpering as Dean's pace quickened. "Please…please…"
"Wrong."
John grabbed the rag Dean had used before with his other hand, pushing it to Collin's mouth and nose, keeping the barrel of the gun against his skull. "Your name's Sam."
John knew he would burn for this, but at least he could keep the real Sam safe by letting Dean indulge into this sick fantasy.
But more importantly, he thought, as he checked into another room on the other side of the motel, maybe in a couple of days Dean would be ready to hunt again…
