Who is.....Jonothan Starsmore | Chamber? - A Reading Guide

Jonothan "Jono" Starsmore is an X-Men affiliated mutant from Marvel comics first introduced in 1994. A native of London and explicitly connected to the grunge scene, Jono has always been the pinnacle of the "bad boy with a heart of gold" trope- the only difference being that in place of a heart he has a furnace of psionic energy. Jono is best known for being part of Generation X (the team he was introduced with) but has also been an official member of the X-Men. The manifestation of his powers left him disfigured and destroyed many of his internal organs as well as his jaw, leaving him unable to speak verbally, requiring him to utilize his psionic abilities to communicate telepathically. Jono's story chronicles one of self-acceptance and is one I'd highly recommend!

Generation X: A new team of mutants under the leadership of Sean Cassidy (Banshee) and Emma Frost (The White Queen) is formed at the Massachusetts campus of the Xavier Institute. Age of X: The mutants are almost extinct, tortured by a strike force led by Colonel Graydon Creed. The first signs of the Age of X appeared in X-Men: Legacy #244; the events were removed from the Earth-616 mainstream continuity, with no memories of the alternate lives. If you've taken a look at my David Haller Reading List you'll see this event explained as "David’s desire to be loved forces him to grapple with reality," and as a story that "places David in a role where he has to choose between a false universe where he is considered a beloved hero and reality where he must choose to be a hero despite the fear others feel about him." While that is the base of the event Jono also has some great moments to shine!

War of the Realms: Following the return of the Dark Elf, Malekith, from imprisonment, he ignited a civil war in his homeworld of Svartalfheim and emerged crowned as king. Malekith additionally began assembling a league of allies from across the Ten Realms, eventually forming the Dark Council which included among its ranks Dario Agger, King Laufey and Loki. If this doesn't sound like an X-Men plot that's because it's not, but the X-Men sure did get a tie-in and Jono's in it.

Yeah, I had some X-Men: Evolution fanfic ideas, too.  So, in an effort to draw potential co-writers, I started drawing a few pics to illustrate them.  Most of these ideas revolved around newly arriving Mutant, Chamber (a character I’ve always felt was just criminally underused) and the one member of the team he ultimately becomes closest to. In the wake of the accident, following the emergence of his powers, Jonothan Starsmore's body no longer functions as a normal Human's does (or even a normal Mutant's, for that matter).  With the psychic energy in his body essentially providing all the needs his physical body requires (and no longer having any internal organs to speak of), he hasn't had to eat, sleep or even breathe since his mutation.  But this development also renders him immune to the powers of Rogue (a fact which is brought to light VERY quickly).  Initially, the knowledge that there's someone Rogue can finally touch again draws them to each other out of a combination of convenience and desperation (with both of them blatantly exploiting the situation in an effort to reclaim even a sliver of the human contact they've both lost).  But it doesn't take long before the bond between them quickly grows into something more. All in all, I'm quite pleased with this pic, if for no other reason than because it was much more planned out and I wasn't shooting from the hip at the 11th hour like I was with last week's pic.  This allowed me more time to make sure certain things were done right, despite the relative simplicity of the image.  Truth be told, I had a number of poses in my head for Chamber and Rogue to share, but I went with this one, primarily because most of the other images, while still loving and romantic, had Rogue not looking at Chamber and I didn't really care for what that implied.  So I wanted an image where the two of them were looking into each others' eyes and the emotion was clearly there. After that (and some successful pencil work), the rest was all dowhill.  Even the background, though simple, turned out exactly how I wanted, looking brushed and almost like rain (sticking to that common trope where the two lovers share a magical reunion in a rainstorm).  I suppose the only real challenge was in Rogue's see-through top, because the rules for it are kind of iffy.  In some ways, it's transparent and in others, not.   Chalk it up to the perils of hand-drawn animation, I guess.  But in the end, everything turned out the way I wanted. So what do you think?  Hope you like it.  And if it should happen to get anyone curious about possibly jumping on board to help co-write these fanfic ideas, so much the better.  Either way, hope to hear from you. ^_^

C. A pairing you wish you shipped, but just can’t.

Oh, man. I don't even know. The one that comes to mind for me is Kate Kane/Maggie Sawyer. (cue comics rant.) During 52, Greg Rucka spent so much time building the relationship of Kate and Renee. It was deep and complex, it was soulmates-who-met-at-the-wrong-time, it was I-love-you-even-when-you're-bad-for-me. They became vigilantes parallel to each other. I loved their love so much I would claw at my face in delight each week.

Then Greg Rucka left, and the New 52 happened. Renee's Question persona was retconned. She was barely mentioned for ages. And JHWIII and Blackman wrote the Batwoman series, and. IDK. Looked around for other lesbian characters and landed on Maggie because she was the only one? Yeah, no. Apparently, I still have strong feelings about this one! ^^;

S. What’s a headcanon you have?

I don't really know if I have any specific headcanons? I guess my biggest one is that if Len survived the explosion at the Oculus, he's a meta. You survive an explosion from a device that controlled time while outside of time? You're a meta now. I don't make the rules.

My other big one is that Cisco and Lisa are endgame. Don't care what the show decided.

U. What are your favorite male/female ships?

Ooh, interesting. Well, my ride or die is Cheri Majors/Citizen Pain from the comic series Violent Messiahs. Messed up traumatized hero-and-villain? Love at first sight? YES.

My other favorite from the top of my head is Jonothan Starsmore (Chamber) and Paige Guthrie (Husk) from Generation X. I will be forever bitter that they ended up not really being a thing.

Those two are some old school comics references. LOL

I do also really, really like Cisco/Lisa and Iris/Eddie. They were both really adorable, and I'm sad we didn't get more content. (Eddie should've lived past S1, imo.)

I drew this a year ago and wasn't going to post it because it was one of the first Jonos I’d drawn and I didn’t like it. Too pretty boy, not enough nose :D But I just wanted to have a go at redesigning his costume because I’m not a fan of the New Mutants black and yellow costume they have him in now. Figured he’d look cool using his powers in a billowing coat with a hood to hide himself. Black and red are his colours too. My silly sense of humour thinks it’s funny to keep giving him skeleton t-shirts.

 But, in retrospect his best costume is always his plain leather jacket and jeans. Mind you I do want the boots I gave him for myself.
