unpacking religious trauma as a Christian who still believes and deeply desires to remain in the faith feels so isolating at times. because like. how do you explain. yes I was taught some very fucked up things as a kid that I'm trying to undo and heal from but I'm not necessarily referring to all the things you think are fucked up. yes I still go to church even though I have a bodily stress response in every church building I'm in, because I seek God there and sometimes I find him and sometimes the devil is right on his heels. I can't tell you about my trauma because you will feel emboldened to mock aspects of my faith that I do not find traumatizing. I can't tell you about my trauma because you will tell me it didn't really happen like that. I love prayer and I dread prayer and I read scripture as often as I avoid it for fear of flashbacks. I am straining all the time to separate love from fear. at the end of it all I just want to see Jesus. I sound deranged to some and faithless to others. but I answer to God. yes, still.

“They were a product of their time” there were white abolitionists since the beginning of slavery in the United States and I am not giving my slave-holding ancestors a get-out-of-jail-free card when they absolutely had the ability to know it was wrong (or did and still chose to participate for their own benefit). We are all influenced by the popular cultural attitudes of our times but we all have the moral reasoning to know right from wrong and say that the prevailing beliefs of our times are unacceptable.
