whenever you have the time, I’d love to hear more about Faye’s other pregnancies. I’m obsessed with Landslide. It’s a masterpiece!
sorry I let this sit in my drafts for so long!!! omg!!!
canonically, I'm making it so Faye really enjoys being pregnant (and good bc they have FIVE girls) because I've tortured her more than enough in the story :,)
Tumblr media
here's a blurb I wrote about Olive:
And then, of course, there was Olive. And the house was never even close to quiet ever again. A crackling baby monitor, some battery-operated toy, hiccups, crying, giggling, abused piano keys crying unceremoniously, gleeful chattering, babbling, burping, tiny feet on the kitchen tile. Olive was always relentless--plagued with a never-ending case of hiccups, especially when she was upset--and walked through life with a certain boldness only her aunt had possessed. It took Olive a few moments to cry when she was born in that white-washed hospital room just before midnight--stubborn as she is, she only relented when her daddy touched her for the first time. She is the oldest daughter, the bravest, the boldest. Self-assured, secured in her place in this world.
Tumblr media
Faye's pregnancy with Joni is about as smooth as a pregnancy can get! chasing around a toddler keeps Faye on her toes, but Bradley always makes sure to spoil her rotten as soon as he gets home.
her biggest craving is giant salads. and we aren't talking flimsy little things, either. we're talking the words: cooked pasta, breadcrumbs, cabbage, butter lettuce, carrots, peppers, vinegar dressing, tomatoes, chicken, seeds, nuts, etc. Bradley would obviously start calling Faye "bunny" during this period bc of that!
after her less-than-steller experience birthing in a hospital, I think Faye would opt to give birth at home. she already knows that she can do it medication-free, but they go to lots of classes anyway! I imagine that Faye is only in labor for a few hours, just like she was with Olive. and then Joni Caroline is born late into the night on October 19th, 2023.
here's a blurb I wrote about it:
Then there was Joni--sweet Joni, endlessly quieter than Olive, but doted on relentlessly. Joni was always watching--those big, brown eyes lingering over still faces and laughing forms and moving screens and cloudy skies. But we--Bradley and I--we could always hear her. It was the humming. She hummed from--what feels like--birth. Always a low little vibration in her throat, her eyes far-away and glassy, her little lips a flat line. When Joni was born, when I pulled her from the warm water and onto my naked chest in the lowlight of the living room, she didn’t cry. Frantically, the midwives checked her airways while Bradley and I rubbed her back, cooing at her. Her airways were clear and she was breathing; she just didn’t have anything to say.
Tumblr media
similarly with Olive and Joni, the pregnancy is easy. she's a surprise baby, but it's a happy surprise! chasing after two toddlers does keep Faye on her toes, but they have family living close to them by the time she's pregnant with Finch!
they keep the gender a surprise, even though they both feel like it's a boy. they don't know why other than they just assume after two girls, they'd get a boy. they settle on the name Finch and don't really look for a girl name at all!
but as soon as Finch is born and is absolutely a girl, they decide that the name Finch is absolutely perfect anyway.
here's a blurb I wrote about it:
Finch came screaming into the world on the coldest day in February, roaring herself into this serious world with a very serious cry. As I laid on the bedroom floor, the plastic sheet beneath me crinkling with my every movement, she bawled and bawled and bawled. It wasn’t until I put her to my breast, only minutes after birth, that she relinquished all thoughts of upset. Finch has always been insistent--always attached to the boob when she was an infant, always begging for more of this, more of that. But as insistent as she has always been, she has been the kindest soul to ever touch this earth. She used to rush into the house in a frenzy, holding an ailing baby bunny, begging me to save it, mommy, save it! She was the resident bug collector, releasing spiders and centipedes outside safely. She would hold hands with anyone, would never leave without kissing us goodbye, and was never embarrassed to let her dad hold her on her shoulders at concerts--even when she was too big.
Tumblr media
Bradley and Faye have three sweet and perfect girls and decide what the Hell? why not have one more!
and then they get pregnant with twins. twin girls!
I feel like this is Faye's most complicated pregnancy. knowing that she is carrying twin girls is a genuine physical reminder of her own sister every single day. worrying about repeating the mistakes of her parents or repeating any part of her history is a major concern for her. Bradley's constantly rubbing knots out of her shoulders at the end of the day.
physically, she's dealing with more weight and less room in her womb, but she's been pregnant a few times by now and knows how it goes. pregnancy agrees with her, even if it's twins!
Bradley is more concerned about two newborns than anything else, especially since the other girls aren't very old yet!
but then they're born and they're the most perfect little souls to ever grace this earth. they complete the Ledger-Bradshaw family to a tee--complete with their big brown eyes and loud mouths.
here's a blurb I wrote about it:
Last came Opal and June. My last daughters stretched me to my breaking point, waiting until a cool June day to start my labor. It was my longest and most grueling one, which was unexpected. Twenty-three hours of me pacing around the house like a wild animal, heavy with two baby girls, twisting this way, stretching that way, standing up, kneeling, leaning, swaying. Little Opal was born first--and she was slow to emerge from me. Coming into my arms at four in the morning a tiny and pink thing, furrowing her brow at me as if I'd interrupted her quiet night. Shortly after Opal was June, who was sweeter and quieter. She was born with her eyes wide open and looking into mine--they were the eyes of my grandmother, deep blue and very intense. They have always been attached to me--attached to my hip. Despite being born in the same hour on the same day, Opal is louder than June. She is more than June in every way: more emotional, more angry, more happy, more hungry, more thirsty. Opal was my only daughter that cried when I left her at daycare for the first time. June held her hand quietly, diligently, but did not tear up. But when I returned only a few hours later, grocery bags in the backseat of the truck, June wrapped her arms around my leg and would not let me go. I sat in the car with them for a long time, the engine cut and the ice cream in the trunk melting, just petting their hair and explaining that I will always come back. Always. This is not to say that the twins love Bradley any less than they love me. And he loves them just as fiercely as he loves me, Olive, Joni, Finch. But they have always been my shadows. They were the last to stop breastfeeding, the last to stop sleeping in our bed, the last to take their training wheels of their bikes, the last to leave the house. And even now, when Opal needs comfort, she will openly weep and wail until we are cooing and patting her hair and kissing her cheeks. And even now, when June needs comfort, she will hold onto me and not let me go. They use their spare keys often.

Paranormal Star Review
Title: Finch Merlin and the Djinn’s Curse(Harley Merlin #12)
Author: Bella Forrest
Pages:406
Rating:⭐⭐⭐(3/5)
Synopsis: The lost city lies beyond a locked gateway. But the key is not what it seems… Now a map-maker extraordinaire, Finch must find the place Erebus so desperately seeks—although the “how” and “why” remain unclear. And a certain vengeful Necromancer is bent on beating Erebus to the punch, and he’d be more than happy to make Finch collateral damage. With his friends’ lives on the line, Finch will fall back on his old trickster ways to get his hands on the gateway’s key. In secret, he plans to uncover a loophole, a way to end his servitude for good. The answer might lie in Erebus’s past servants and their storied history with the djinn... The djinn have lost their connection to Erebus, and Raffe doesn’t know how much longer he can cope before his alter ego goes insane. That’s the only reason he agrees to travel halfway across the world to find answers for Finch. Raffe aches to end the djinn curse that threatens his future with Santana, but he’d have to achieve the impossible: separate himself from the demon within.

I'd like to bird shame ALL of my hens for thinking the hottest weekend of the year is a prime time to start sitting on their clutches. Special award goes to the finch hen, who I didn't even KNOW was a hen (suspected but no egg, no hen on these birds), who decided NOW was the time to lay her first clutch so she and her 2 boyfriends can all die sitting on them in 110F+ weather along with the dove and her beau a few feet over on their nest. At least the quail are on the ground underneath them where its cooler.

December 24, 2023 - Andean Siskin (Spinus spinescens) Found in the Andes in parts of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, these finches live in open habitats with some trees and bushes. Foraging in pairs and groups on or near the ground, they eat seeds from a variety of plants, as well as flowers. Little is known about their breeding behavior, though adults in breeding condition have been found in August, they have been seen building nests in June, and recently fledged chicks were observed in March.

Another Landslide thot!
As the girls get older, which parent handles serious conversations better with the girls? Do their teenage daughters have a favorite parent?
ooooo!! this is a great question!!
I think since the girls are all pretty close in age, they rely on each other for things they don't feel like they can take to Faye or Bradley. personally I think that they come to Faye for just about everything bc she's the parent that's stayed home with them. and while Bradley is by all means a very loving and accepting father, Faye is still the more gentile parent.
bc I can't handle traumatizing them anymore, I feel like they are all a really close family! they talk things out and have great communication--plus they all just love and respect each other. having parents that are as in love as Faye and Bradley are is something the girls KNOW they're lucky to have. and it only becomes more apparent as they get older and see other relationships.
however....Olive eventually begins to favor Bradley juuuuust a little bit more than Faye--especially when she gets to like toddlerhood. and Finch eventually does too! Finch is the one named after a bird so it only makes sense!
but Joni, Opal, June, Marmalade, and Buttercup all prefer Faye by a landslide. (haha)

Edith Finch Timeline
So I'm still organizing my theories (honestly they're more like a list of unanswered questions than a coherent theory right now) but I think my timeline is pretty much complete now that I've had a chance to go back through the pet cemetery and add all those in.
I do some wild speculating about Odin here that has no canon basis, just spinning ideas.
Things to notice- Just how many deaths happen on or very near birthdays. Not always the birthday of the person who dies and not every time, but suspiciously often.
The pets almost seem to fill in the years when no one human died? Like everything in this game it's nothing definitive enough to base a solid theory on, but it is odd.
TIMELINE
1439 - Earliest possible beginning of the Finch Family Curse based on the Odin viewmaster reel, as this is 500 years prior to the invention of the first viewmaster.
1445 - If the Odin viewmaster is the Model E made in 1955 (which I think it is), this is the start of the curse instead. Not much is happening in Norway during this period, but Vlad the Impaler was at the top of his game this year?
~About 7 generations of Finches dying horribly happens here.~
1880 - Odin is born. At some point between now and his death he writes "The Mysteries of Death and the Thereafter" and "Joining the Great Majority" which both appear to be books about the afterlife.
1896 - Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration begins with the Belgian Antarctic Expedition and won't end till after WWI. Expeditions are marked by depression, starvation, insanity and scurvy. Many famous expeditions are made by Norwegian teams. Odin is 16.
1911 - A Norwegian expedition is first to reach the South Pole. The British Scott expedition chasing the same goal are lost. Odin is 31.
28 July 1914 - WWI begins, Odin is 34. Norway, "The Neutral Ally", remains neutral on the war but due to economic pressure from Britain commits its merchant marine fleet (one of the largest in the world) to Britain's service. Half the fleet is sunk and 2000 seamen are killed. If Odin was a sailor, he likely served. Alternatively, he may have been one of the wealthy merchants who profited greatly during the war. He clearly has a great deal of money to burn by 1937.
June 17 1915 - Sven is born.
April 8, 1917 - Edie is born.
1935 - At some point between now and Dec 1937, Edie and Sven marry and Sven takes Edith's last name.
1936 - Ingeborg and her newborn Johann Finch die in an unknown manner. Odin is 56, Edie is 19, Sven is 17.
Jan 7 1937 - Odin sets sail for Washington.
Dec 1937 - Arrival on Orcas Island, death of Odin at 57. Molly is born, on the boat? In the Old House? Sven and Edie build the cemetery, and then the house.
1938 - Churpy the budgie joins the family.
1939 - Invention of the viewmaster, earliest point the Odin story could have been recorded.
Sep 1939 - Sep 1945 - WWII. Sven was 24, and may have served or been drafted.
1940 - Burpy the house finch joins the family.
1941 - Churpy dies.
1947 - Christopher the goldfish joins the family.
Oct 31 1947 - Halloween Baby Barbara
Sometime between 1937 and 1947 - Molly's unnamed gerbil joins the family.
Dec 13 1947 - Molly dies of apparent poisoning after eating mistletoe berries, on or very near her 10th bday. She relates hallucinating having become several animals, most notably a cat. Christopher the fish dies shortly after. The fate of her unnamed gerbil is unrecorded, as none of the unattributed headstones are of the right age, but presumably it dies eventually.
1948 - Burpy dies at 8.
April 25 1950 - Sam and Calvin are born.
Aug 26 1952 - Walter is born.
1952 - Lurpy the Cockatiel joins the family.
1955 - Viewmaster Model E released- If this is the one used for Odin's story, that puts the beginning of the curse at 1455.
1956 - Lucy the dog joins the family.
1959 - Bailey the (???) joins the family.
Oct 31 1960 - Barbara dies, allegedly murdered, on her 16th bday. Her boyfriend Rick disappears the same night. The version of her death shared in the game is notably extremely unreliable and raises numerous questions. Rick is seen in a leg cast using crutches. Walter is 8, Sam and Calvin are 10 and notably absent from reported events.
Sept 23 1961 - Calvin dies at 11 falling from a cliff. He is seen wearing a weathered and heavily autographed leg cast. His model shows him with a black eye and several cuts.
1962 - Zoe the (???) joins the family.
1963 - Lurpy dies at 11. (Cockatiels have a life expectancy of 20-25 years)
Aug 26 1964 - Sven dies on Walter's 12th bday, while making a dragon shaped slide. He's 49.
1968 - Walter enters the bunker. He's 16. Durpy the Dove joins the family.
May 7 1968 - Dawn is born.
1969 - Lucy the dog dies.
June 20 1969 - Gus is born.
1970 - Zoe dies
1971 - Purply the Budgie joins the family.
1974 - Coco the (???) joins the family.
Jan 12 1976 - Gregory is born
Dec 7 1977 - Kay files for divorce after arguing with Sam about the curse.
Dec 19 1977 - Gregory drowns in the bath a month before his 2nd bday
1978 - Shadow the cat joins the family.
1979 - Purply dies at 8.
1980 - Rob the Bearded Dragon joins the family. Bob the Snake joins the family.
1981 - Durpy dies at 13.
1982 - Oliver the rabbit joins the family.
Nov 8 1982 - Gus dies, crushed by debris from a storm during Sam's wedding to an unnamed woman.
July 16 1983 - Sam dies, kicked off a cliff by a deer. Dawn is 15.
1984 - Bob dies at 4.
1985 - Daisy the (???) joins the family.
1986-87 Dawn goes to India, meets Sanjay.
1988 - Shadow the cat dies.
Dec 27 1988 - Lewis is born. Furpy joins the family. Tucker the (???) joins the family
1989 - Oliver the rabbit dies.
1991 - Rob dies at 10. Furpy dies.
1992 - Zurpy the Owl joins the family.
May 19 1992 - Milton is born.
1993 - Charlie the cat joins the family. Daisy dies.
1994 - Durpy Jr the Dove joins the family.
1995 - Zurpy dies at 3. Schatzi the (???) joins the family.
Feb 14 1999 - Valentine's Baby Edith. Lowest tide in a thousand years allegedly allows Edie to access the Old House. At some point between now and Nov 2010, three unnamed gerbils join the family, and then die.
Feb 22 2002 - Sanjay dies in an earthquake, eight days after Edith's 3rd bday, Dawn and children return to Finch House. Dawn writes "To Teach and To Learn" at some point in the next few years. At some point between now and 2010, Dawn probably finds a stray cat and names it Molly.
Oct 23 2003 - Milton disappears.
Late 2003 to Early 2004 - Dawn searches for Milton, eventually gives up and seals the rooms for unknown reasons.
March 31 2005 - Walter leaves the bunker and dies, allegedly hit by a train. There are several strange inconsistencies surrounding the circumstances of his death.
2006 - Durpy Jr dies at 12.
2009 - Schatzi dies
Nov 21 2010 - Lewis dies of apparent suicide one month before his 22nd bday.
Nov 28 2010 - A week after Lewis's death, Dawn informs Edie they are leaving the house. After Edie attempts to give Edith a book containing a story about their family which Dawn violently rips away, Dawn flees the house with Edith immediately, leaving Edie and all her belongings behind.
(Molly the cat is not mentioned in regards to the move, so she may have died by this point, but she is not listed in the graveyard, so it's possible she was simply left behind. There is a taxidermy calico in Sam's room, but Sam was dead before Molly could reasonably have joined the family, so this is unlikely to be her. A cat is seen outside human Molly's room in 2016, which may prove she's still alive- but she'd be around 14 years old. An unlikely age for a cat abandoned outdoors for 7 years.)
Nov 29 2010 - Edie is found dead by nursing care workers, and may have killed herself by combining alcohol with her medication, intentionally or otherwise. She's 93, the only member of her family to live longer than her father, who died at 57.
Dec 5 2010 - The date on Edie's tombstone, a week after when she supposedly died.
May (around the 12-18th?) 2016 - Edith becomes pregnant.
Oct 12 2016 - Dawn dies of a chronic illness at 48. Edith is 16 and about 6 months pregnant.
Oct 13 - 19 2016 - Edith returns to the Finch House at 22 weeks pregnant.
Jan 18 2017 - Edith dies in childbirth a month before her 18th bday. Christopher is born (possibly named for Molly's goldfish?).
2027? - At some point in the future, a young Christopher returns to the house, which has changed since the last time it was seen. He is wearing a cast.
A note on unrecorded pets- There are additionally 5 (possibly 6?) unmarked pet graves in the cemetery. One of the blank stones presumably belongs to Rob the bearded dragon, who has a memorial in Edie's room but no gravestone. One is marked as a fish and another is a rabbit, with no names or dates. One is a knocked over and unreadable sign of the same kind used for the birds, indicating it may be an otherwise unrecorded bird. There is also a statue of a frog- the knocked over sign may instead refer to an unrecorded pet frog, or the frog statue might be a separate gravestone, or simply a decoration. This leaves one blank headstone with no indication of what might lie beneath it. Let's assume it's a mass grave for gerbils.

Bird time! As a certified Bird Nerd I loved all the references to bird species in this chapter so I figured I would show them off in case you want a visual in your mind.
To try to figure out exactly which species are mentioned (even though I know Hugo was not concerned with what genus and species he was referring to), I looked up the frequency of bird species seen in the Luxembourg Gardens in the first quarter of June on eBird! Granted, I have no idea how much avian diversity has changed in the city of Paris from the 1800s to now, but I don't know my European species very well so this was a huge help.
1. "fauvettes" / "linnets" According to wikipedia, "fauvette" is generally agreed to refer to the family Sylviidae , specifically the genus Sylvia, though it can refer to other passerine species. "Linnet," meanwhile, seems to refer to the family Fringillidæ (true finches). I'm going to go with the original French and say that these are what in English we would call "warblers" rather than finches. The only member of the genus Sylvia seen in the Luxembourg Gardens in early June on eBird is the Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) (pictured). The other Sylvia species seen in the gardens but more rarely is the Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin).
Tumblr media
2. "passereaux" / "sparrows" In ornithology, "passeraux" in English would be "passerines" which is the biggest order of birds, comprising about half of all bird species! However, the TLFi states that "passereau" can be a synonym for "moineau," or "sparrow." So I think Hapgood is correct in that translation and we can narrow down the species a bit. The only sparrow that is seen in the Luxembourg Gardens at any time of year is the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus).
Tumblr media
3. "pique-bois" / "woodpeckers" Finally a straight-forward translation! According to eBird data, there are two species of woodpeckers seen in the Luxembourg Gardens. The only one seen at the correct time of year is the Eurasian Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) (pictured), although the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) has been seen just a little earlier in the year.
Tumblr media
4. "les hirondelles" / "the swallows" A species I know quite a lot about! This is undoubtedly referring to the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), which I had the privilege of studying for a few years to research their movement patterns. The line in the text is so wonderful and shows that Hugo has definitely watched these graceful birds before, as he captured the nature in which they glide and skim with speed near the ground, foraging for flying insects: “the swallows indulged in the charming threat of flying low.”
Tumblr media
5. "le ramier" / "ring-dove" I believe this is pretty straight-forwardly referring to the Common Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus) which is the most commonly seen bird overall in the gardens in early June!
Tumblr media
6. "le pinson" / "chaffinch" According to wikipedia, the term "pinson" is another common-name term given to multiple species of grain-eating passerines, however, there are two "true" pinson species, one of which is seen in the Luxembourg Gardens at this time: the Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs).
Tumblr media
7. "le chardonneret" / "goldfinch" We're once again dealing with an ambiguous term here for birds in the family Fringillidae. Unfortunately, the birds that have "Chardonneret" in their common name do not appear on any eBird lists for the Luxembourg Gardens. The only other Fringillidae species that are recorded in the gardens (besides the Common Chaffinch) are the European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris) and the European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). While neither have been seen in early June, the European Greenfinch is seen more commonly. However, I think this could be a toss up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. "le rouge-gorge" / "red-breast" This one is pretty straightforward, "le Rouge-gorge familier" is none other than the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) (aka extreme borb).
Tumblr media
9. "le verdier" / "the green finch" We've already discussed all of the finches that have been documented in the Luxembourg Gardens, and since "verdier" refers to birds in the genus Chloris, this last bird mention is again talking about our friend the European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris).
After reading this chapter I thought Hugo was listing so many bird species... which he certainly did, but after poking around on eBird for what's been seen at the Luxembourg Gardens in the past I want to know why he focused so much on the finches and didn't mention any thrushes, swifts, tits, wrens, treecreepers, or so many more!
