one important thing i learned while working as a clerk at the public defender's office was that every time i made a phone call to a client, i was the worst part of that client's day, and for me it was tuesday, you know? clients would have reactions to news i would deliver that was proportionate to their situation but disproportionate to the part i played in the whole thing. i was just the messenger, but their freedom was on the line. i try to keep that fact in mind whenever i deal with the front line of any institution, even when i want to freak out, i just remind myself, for them it is tuesday, and they have to finish this call and then go on break. nothing about their dispassionate tone or hurry is personal, and they are processing paperwork as they get it. like i'm currently desperately invested in trying to get two medical establishments to fucking talk to each other and process my referral which they should have gotten a week ago, because it is my life that is on the line, my health. i need to know if i have cancer, you know? that's something i need to know. but i try to make sure that the scheduler or secretary doesn't get the brunt of that need, because it's not their job to take that on. their job is to make appointments with the paperwork they have when they have it. it's not their fault us healthcare is a kafkaeque nightmare. to them it's tuesday. whatever mantra helps you from crying on the phone, you know? whatever works. to them it's tuesday.
