Kazuki Sora taidan diary 〜 2024.2.11

(also kind of a Boiled Doyle on the Toil Trail / Frozen Holiday write up)

I've now woken up eight times in a world where Kazuka Sora is an OG (changing that number daily, as I've been trying to write this for six days), and the sense of having somehow slipped into a severely incorrect timeline is getting progressively stronger. Coupled bizarrely with that is deep, deep gratitude that, despite everything that's happened in the last four years, and especially in the last five months, she got a gut-wrenchingly, absolutely devastatingly beautiful taidan. I can't say perfect, because perfect would have been after a well deserved top star run. But barring that, I never dreamed it would get this close.

Long post incoming.

I have to set the stage...

Once upon a time in 2013, Asaka Manato, then nibante in Ouki Kaname's Soragumi, got her turn starring in Brilliant Dreams +NEXT, a multi-part Sky Stage series where you got to like, do some stuff of your choice with other people in your troupe. She decided to recreate some of her favorite revue choreography, and a friend alerted me that one episode was dedicated to the infamous Rosso scene from Takarazuka's Dream Kingdom (which, as you can see in the linked post, completely short circuited noob me from a decade ago). Maasama was still a good 2+ years from winning me over at the time, and I think I reluctantly watched it with some level of offense that she touched a Komu thing. As I'm sitting in front of my computer rolling my eyes, out comes this tiny thing in capri pants, mismatched socks, suspenders, and thick glasses: ken-4 Kazuki Sora, here to report on the situation in the rehearsal room.

She spent her airtime cracking jokes, tripping on her tongue, riding on Susshi's shoulders, and generally acting like Soragumi's annoying kid brother. I thought she was funny.

Another friend told me she thought she was tracked. I absolutely did not believe her.

Then, against a fair amount of adversity, she got the 100th anniversary Rose of Versailles shinko lead, and my eyes widened a bit. The next time I found myself in Japan, I was gifted a 9th row seat to what coincidentally happened to be her first ginkyou crossing in PHOENIX Takarazuka! I'd been spending the show curiously scanning the stage for her, and when I witnessed the gap between reporter and performer, my jaw hit the floor.

Afterwards, my kangeki companion asked if I was interested in anyone in the troupe. I said Kazuki Sora. She recoiled and said "but she's so short."

Something that I noticed during this taidan trip is that covid-era fans met a wildly different Sora than I know. Growing up in 2010s Soragumi was uniquely rough. I'm not even talking about ::hand waves:: the present circumstances and what may or may not have lead up to them; I mean they persisted with a level of star saturation through the dawn of the pandemic that had kinda crazy consequences for the otokoyaku track. Not only was the track itself overcrowded, but the troupe also held onto a number of non-tracked upperclassmen to whom they seemed unwaveringly committed to casting in juicy roles. I remember when things seemed so untenable that Soragumi fans were universally on pins and needles waiting for what felt like an inevitable big transfer out, and I remember freezing in shock on the side of the road when instead they transferred Serika Toa in.

Here's some analysis for perspective:

Kiki is the third oldest top of all time, and spent more time as nibante alone than Tamaki Ryou took to get from debut to top.

Lord knows how long Soragumi will be in this state of flux, but if they come out of it and Kiki gets a normal number of shows, AND Sakuragi Minato is next, Zun could immediately overtake Kiki for third place

Speaking of Zun, her first two-city lead was in 2020. Looking at her top star douki, Rei Makoto's and Yuzuka Rei's were in 2017, and Tsukishiro Kanato's was in 2018.

Rukaze Hikaru's first bow lead was in 2019, two years later than her other tracked douki, Akatsuki Chisei (four if you count A-EN).

Slightly more invisible but just as devastating, the lessened exposure on stage between leads has likely resulted in lower fan club numbers and less overall popularity.

...and back to Sora. Hundreds of us filled Hibiya Park this past weekend, but Sora spent her early Takarazuka career so buried that, despite being a triple threat on stage and an utter delight off, her fan base was small enough that at ken-7 they let me, not yet even a club member, accompany my friend to demachi where I became the third attendee. For years, Sora was, frustratingly, an in-person only watch. I'd go to Japan, memorize her positions, miss the rest of the show for following her with my opera glasses, and pop in the DVD at home only to find her always just off screen. A Motion was one of the most fun times I've had in a Takarazuka theater, and on the DVD during my favorite Sora SOLO, the camera is on Sorahane Riku wordlessly dancing.

I was floored when she got Anita. I was livid that she could give THAT PERFORMANCE and immediately afterwards be cast as an ensemble soldier in Red River (although she was so good in Citrus Breeze that after 5 years of deluding myself that I "couldn't betray my beloved Yukigumi like that" ((ironic, right?)) I finally caved and joined club). I stress dreamed multiple times about the impending bow announcement before she got Hustle Mates. I cried when she finally came down the stairs between two musumeyaku in Ocean's Eleven at ken-10, in which she played Linus, a role that felt like a big break even though it had previously always gone to ken-6s. FINALLY, the massive Ocean's taidan relieved a little pressure, and I felt a tangible thrill when suddenly she was all over the Aqua Vitae shonichi digest, something that had never happened before.

That's where we left off in February 2020, when the Diamond Princess docked in Yokohama, and my therapist didn't know what I was talking about when I said I was giving myself a stomachache watching live case numbers ahead of my scheduled trip, and I canceled my flight, and I put my freshly printed pack of homemade Suleiman postcards under my bed, and I didn't see her for 4 years 4 months and 3 days.

It's hard to talk about Sora's taidan announcement and not come off as biased and overly dramatic, given that she's my girl. But in 11 years of countless taidan announcements, I've never come close to being as blindsided by one as I was with hers. The vibe I've gotten is that fans, siennes, and patrons alike were all properly shocked.

I'd spent the better part of a decade internally screaming for Takarazuka to act like they recognize her undeniable talent. Frustratingly, it finally started happening during covid. While I was living under the impression that Hustle Mates was a genuine miracle, she got an unimaginable second lead... then, thanks to the breathing room in her new Yukigumi home, a third... and then a fourth. Having been burned for so long, I've always firmly been team I-don't-think-Sora-is-going-to-make-top, but despite that, I was actually starting to believe it could—dare I say would—happen. I wasn't even certain the people murmuring on twitter that she might leapfrog Aasa were completely delusional. I went into Hyperbolic Chart, my looooong awaited reunion, excited to assess Kasumi Sana as her potential future partner. I enthusiastically bought all her postcards for future writing, because the last time I'd seen her, she, at ken-10, didn't have postcards.

Two days after that I found myself again frozen in shock on the side of the road.

Two days after that.... yeah.

Somehow, despite 11 years of knowing how this works, of weathering various taidans with friends, of crying in bathrooms until they started cleaning the theater at taidans that weren't even technically mine, I was also completely blindsided by the taidan experience itself.

Part of it was definitely the time skip, from years of intimate Sora fandom to nothing to a couple of A-seki (she's the it girl now!) for a lead I wouldn't have chosen with a troupe I barely recognize anymore to bye, she's gone. Part of it was being thrown back into this after 4+ years of pandemic-dulled emotions, followed by the exhaustion of Takarazuka's crisis era. Part of it was lowered expectations from the largely uninspired and under funded lineup of forgettable shows churned out by tired directors of dubious morality. Part of it was the disaster-shortened Mura run, the self-preserving dissociation fueled by the pain and disbelief that there was a dinner show and I wasn't at it, followed by a month and a half stretch of work so busy it was still going while I sat at the ANA gate for my 1am flight.

But I got here and squeezed into one of those red seats and then all at once I was an unsealed vacuum, cracked wide open, and Doyle and Frozen Holiday rushed in and filled the airless void till it burst.

I've been down on Yukigumi.

Yukigumi has been my home troupe for the vast majority of my fandom. I had the fancy Swarovski crystal Yukigumi bag charms, the whole Yukigumi getup from Sports Day '14, Yukigumi albums, Yukigumi chopsticks, etc etc etc. I literally didn't join Sora club for years because I couldn't imagine being pulled out of Yukigumi. But while I was locked out of the country, the march of time took my favorite top star and the vast majority of my emotional support upperclassmen. The pandemic spit Yukigumi out in a state that just made me reeeeeeeeally sad. So I stopped watching them. That's the exact moment they picked to put Sora there.

I hate to admit it, but I still haven't totally caught up on her Yukigumi time.

Which is probably the main reason this show caught me SO off guard... even having watched AND enjoyed the Mura livestream. Sora is best watched in person, after all.

Doyle—a silly take on Arthur Conan Doyle's life, and how he used a magic pen to write Sherlock Holmes by accident, thus setting into motion a runaway series of events—is not only a fun and joyful show, it's a masterpiece of casting. The top 4 were at their absolute peak, and it was a thrill to watch.

I've been watching Ayakaze Sakina since her shinjin kouen days, and my write-ups over the years probably betray my rollercoaster hot and cold journey through her career. I really liked Doyle as a lead for her though. She essentially plays a big idiot wifeguy with a dream, an imaginary best friend, and little conviction; she was very funny and charming. If you were one of the lucky few who managed to see On the 20th Century, think that guy but earnestly the main character vs. dude with main character syndrome. The older I get, the more I have a soft spot for shows where the top combi has "ecstatically celebrating at least their tenth wedding anniversary" energy, and this was one of those.

...Thanks in large part to Yumeshiro Aya, who is absolutely everything. She may be boosted by consistently reminding me of Shirahane Yuri since her partial lead in the 103s Bunkasai, but she also has a very particular type of girlboss energy that I don't feel like I've seen in quite a while. It isn't wearing the proverbial pants energy (a la early TamaChapi), but it is overwhelming I got this energy. I find her to be the absolute embodiment of a top musumeyaku, in that she understands the assignment (making the top star better), while perching on the edge of the backseat just enough that she doesn't overpower Saki, but she's still a knockout in her own right. She probably exudes an extra dose of this energy as Louisa Doyle, who plays a very similar role in her husband's life and writing career. I could not be more thrilled that Aya isn't retiring yet.

Asami Jun plays the aforementioned imaginary friend/magic pen-generated apparition, who happens to be Sherlock Holmes. Some people I've talked to seem a little disappointed in her stage time, but I really felt like this was also peak Aasa. She seems to have broken through a layer of ceiling and gotten really comfortable leaning into her c***y unique energy, which, though I can picture it being polarizing, really does it for me. I sure as hell have never seen an interpretation of Sherlock Holmes REMOTELY like Aasa's, but I was enjoying the Aasa of it all so much that I really didn't care.

When I saw that Sora was playing the editor of Strand Magazine, I was somewhat disappointedly imagining a role like Lestrade (not to invoke another Sherlock), the sort of there-but-not character that has dominated her Takarazuka career since she started getting named roles. My first surprise was how good of a role this was in general, and then how well suited it was to her. She gets to be aloof and handsome, but also incredibly upbeat and funny at times. Her little coworkers at her utterly failing magazine are obsessed with her (which is the mood of the century), and there is a cute little meta moment where Doyle threatens to stop writing Sherlock and Sora tries to quit her job, only to be restrained physically by said coworkers (which is the mood of the moment). Everything from the set of her off-gray permed wig to her 4 or so different plaid suits to her opening solo number was absolutely perfect (not as perfect as it was gonna be later!!!!!).

It's weird watching a Christmas show in February

I rapidly stopped caring

Speaking of rollercoasters of hot and cold, Noguchi used to be my most hated revue director, hands down. Circa 2017-18, after being deeply personally burned by Super Voyager (and deeply personally confused by Beautiful Garden), the tension I felt while awaiting show announcements hoping I wouldn't have to watch another Noguchi was intense. Noguchi revues being something people covet nowadays still feels unfamiliar, but I count myself among people.

He turned it around for me with the Takarazuka equivalent of winning the grocery store ingredients episode of Project Runway: Delicieux, a covid-budget masterpiece of public domain music and foam macarons (incidentally, also a goodbye to Sora of sorts, as it was her last Soragumi revue). I officially owe him my life after what he did for her in Frozen Holiday.

Firstly, going into my 11th year of watching live Yukigumi, I've never seen Saki shine brighter. While ostensibly a Christmas spectacular, Frozen Holiday was also meant to celebrate Yukigumi's 100th anniversary. Despite the aforementioned rollercoaster, I'm so glad that the top star for the anniversary was someone who has not spent a day outside of Yukigumi in her sienne life, who I've been watching since before my first trip to Japan. And I think the joy of it really showed on her. Aya was an angel, so visually perfect in her snow queen dress that I believed she was destined to be top musumeyaku of Yukigumi from birth. Aasa continued to out-Aasa herself; the wave of feral energy she set off during the first livestream was well earned.

But... remember the disembodied arm just off the TV screen? The utter SHOCK I experienced when they treated her like a friggin' nibante...

Nanami Hiroki, who pulled top star numbers and probably had double our last day crowd at her average Hoshigumi ochakai, and Miya Rurika, who needed a simulcast for her last ochakai, didn't even get the final revue treatment that Sora did.

The disbelief that they did so good by her, the disbelief that I missed the transition, the disbelief that she was really leaving, shattered me.

In addition to general prominence throughout the revue, she gets a whole white-clad taidan number, complete with lyrics designed to blind her fans with saltwater, and one of the best bits of dancing I've seen out of her. After a seemingly impossible quick change, she rejoins the troupe for a very chuuzume-esque anniversary number (assuming the Christmas kyakusekiori is the real chuuzume), and that might actually be my favorite bit of dancing in the whole show. She co-leads the Noguchi-signature boyband number with Aasa, which I forgive because it's them and it's also T.M. REVOLUTION. She even gets a spotlight moment alone with Saki during the kuroenbi. And through all of it, she was so, so good. Good does not even begin to describe Kazuki Sora.

I felt like I cried for 48 hours straight.

I didn't manage to get myself actually into the theater for senshuuraku, but I did end up with two Hibiya cinema tickets. When I tried to pass one off onto one of the fellow jilted Sora Club members trying her luck outside of Chanter, I got pounced on by an old lady while those in their white wear were moaning about the cinema not being good enough. I was too tired and nervous to tell her I'd prefer to sit next to someone in club, so she got it. She and I ended up crying the hardest of everyone in the cinema by far. Thanks, old lady <3.

One thing that struck me was how desperately, frightfully grateful I was that Sora retired from Yukigumi. Sure, if she hadn't, her taidan would have probably just been canceled... but I don't even mean that. The anniversary aspect of Frozen Holiday was beautiful, and filled me with a joy and nostalgia I wasn't prepared for. It was my first kyakusekiori since 2019, and after Sora ran by me, I was blessed to find myself next to Kujou Asu, someone I adore enough to be in her club in an alternate universe. It was my first iride since 2019, and I had the privilege of seeing off one of my favorite musumeyaku, Sara Anna, as well. The way the troupe members talked about Sora, and what she gave them, and how thrilled they were that she joined them, made my heart swell. As genuinely mad as I was when they broke up KikiSora, I could see that Yukigumi gave her the space to blossom.

The farewell dinner was even entirely gluten free by complete accident, down to the fancy manju omiyage with mountain yam flour dough.

Five onsen dips, a massive weeb shopping spree a lifetime in the making, and one extremely bizarre Komu show later, I'm on the plane home, finally not crying on command.

But not having a runaway fave for the first time in ten years feels really desolate. I miss her so much.

Thank you for the ask boog!! :DDD OH BOY DO I GOT ANSWERS

(also I'm gonna be bending the rules a little bit for what counts as a movie because there's some things that I just need to mention that aren't technically movies but I watch as movies if you know what I mean)

Okay first and foremost, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way: Kiki's Delivery Service.

I could write a whole 4 hour long video essay on how much this movie means to me and how it is absolutely incredible. The art, the characters and their development, the message, the voice acting, THE SCORE?!?!?!? EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING AND IT IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED FOR HOW GENUINELY THOUGHTFUL AND WELL CRAFTED IT IS. I love this movie so much and there are a bajillion times more instances that I have related to Kiki than I can count. I love this movie.

Okay now that that's out of the way, another two favorites of mine are Amélie and Little Miss Sunshine.

These movies are so warm and fuzzy. Like, I always leave them with such a giddy smile on my face lol. I am quite literally BEGGING to live the life that Amélie is living (who knows, maybe I will) and the family dynamics in Little Miss Sunshine are so genuinely heartwarming and I just UGH. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Also, both scores are ✨️impeccable✨️

Another one of my favorites is Fantastic Mr. Fox which I actually only watched fairly recently. I'd just watched it around autumn of last year so it's more recent than a lot of the other one's on my list but I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE. First of all, the script is hilarious and I love the sheer ridiculousness of the whole escapade, and the foresty fall vibe and colour palette of this film is just so ✨️🍂crisp🍂✨️ it's PERFECT. Also I just ADORE stop-motion animation so this movie is an absolute delight.

I'm gonna group these next two together under the category of "Romance I am completely hopeless and pathetic for" and those movies are The Wind Rises and Anastasia (Amélie could also fit in this category but it carries more of a similar fuzzy feeling to Little Miss Sunshine so I grouped those two together instead)

I FEEL SO LONELY AND IN LOVE EVERY TIME I WATCH THESE MOVIES. I'M NOT KIDDING, IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED ANY OF THE ROMANCE SCENES IN THE WIND RISES GO DO THAT RIGHT NOW YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. THEY ARE SO SWEET. THE HUG. THE HUGGGGG. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON ANYA AND DIMITRI'S DYNAMIC BECAUSE OMG. I need that in my life :') I also just love all the visuals in both of these films. Like that one scene in Anastasia where all the ghosts of Anya's past fly through the windows is just SO PRETTY. Anyway I'm done being obnoxious about love now ajsgsjhsk

Now is the time where I bend the rules for this question a little bit because TECHNICALLY it's not a movie, it's a recording of a stage musical but I don't care because it's just so good. That Musical is Into the Woods (not the movie because it's terrible)

This movie is Shrek before Shrek was made. It is so funny and yet so genuinely impactful and meaningful all at the same time and it baffles me every time. The music is so fun and the lyrics so well written. It's bizarre and fun and bittersweet and I love it. If you haven't watched it already, the full original recording is up on youtube for free and I HIGHLY recommend if you're feeling down.

Oh my fucking god they did it again!!!!

Spoilers for Owl House For The Future leave now if ya don’t want spoiled

They did it again!!!!

I am so mad I could scream

They left us at not just another cliffhanger but an even bigger one then last time.!.

I love that king wants to sorta rehabilitate the Collector, after all deep down they seem to be just a kid, a kid who can shape reality on a win and doesn’t understand the mortality of mortals, but a kid none the less

I love that both Eda and Lilith are ok, it makes me really happy but it is also super scary how all the adults have been dollified leaving the kids to ensue chaos.

I hate that Odalia is not peppered but at the same time I don’t mind her havening to mother the collector

Camila has joined the Punch Belos Brigade fuck yeah, but I swear someone needs to do it already

We are probably going to start the last with a confrontation considering Belos, disguised as Raine and I’ll get to that in a bit, has convinced the Collector that king is going to start a coup

While I know the Collector is a gulible little kid I hate he’s being tricked AGAIN!

A lot of feels this time as we see these kids have to live in fear while missing their parents and I love that Camila is trying to help them not bottle it up.

I also love that Luz needed to realize that all she wanted was to be understood, it makes so much sense for her character and it’s funny non of us thought of it before lol

Also a Stringbean is the cutest Snakeshifter ever and if something happens to her I will riot, it’s a perfect pair for Luz and in a way we were all right about what it would be lol.

On a more serious note I honestly am not looking forward to Eda seeing Belos/Raine as we all know how much she cared for them and might just break her heart completely.

Also typical Belos picking the body that cause the most Emotional Damage to our group the only way it could be worse is if he jumped into one of the parents, excluding Odalia,

Also also anyone else get the feeling that if Odalia and Camila meet she would deck Odalia with no hesitation?

Also classic Edric puts himself in a full body cast, not from fighting of the watcher star things, but falling down a well. Classic Edric lol.

I can’t wait for Camila to finally properly meet Eda and King, I want her to hug king like Luz did.

Also it’s a little sad that King had to kinda mature so quickly, remember he’s about 8yo he shouldn’t have to be in as stressful a situation as he’s in.

I’m glad Willow got to let out some of her stress, and I love that theorists were right and that Hunter can now zip around like he did with flapjack.

Not Camila channeling her inner Luz and chucking the bat at Kiki Mora lol, she had no idea how to use magic so she looked at her bat and went instantly into chucking it at Kiki, even going so far as to kiss it first lol.

I also love how Camila is trying to like the demon realm but is constantly freaking out about the bizarre and macabre nature of it. She is a good mom and I can tell she’s doing her best to make her daughter happy and I’ll deck someone if she dies.

No seriously I just realized that was a possibility and now I might cry.

I feel like this ep was happier to cushion the finale, and yeah I know it was pretty dark but something tells me the finale may be worse

Or not I don’t know anymore, they keep throwing curveballs and while I love it as this is one of the most creative shows I’ve seen in a long Tim, even for Disney, but I also hate that anything’s on the table now.

I both want the finale to be here and not at the same time cause I crave knowing what happens next but at the same time we only have 1 left and I’m not ready for the Owl house to be over especially since there has been no confirmation, that I know of, of them continuing this amazing world.

I have a feeling no matter how this ends I’m going to cry and I’m not ready for that yet.

Anyway don’t mind all this I’m currently going through so many emotions that all I know is that I want to deck Belos and cry.

Although I don’t think I’ll ever not want to deck Belos he deserves it.

Also if anyone wants I’ll probably make cinch Belos Brigade for my Redbubble, I’ll let you guys know if I do! We will get him, even if it’s only through vibes and our dreams since he’s just an evil cartoon man.

I think that’s enough tho lol.

10 Most Anticipated of 2021

Yes, 2021 is 1/12 done. Oh well, better late than never with this list. Here are a few films by some great directors that I look forward to watching this year:

Don't Worry Darling dir. Olivia Wilde

I was totally charmed by Wilde’s directorial debut (which was co-written by Susanna Fogel a pretty charming director in her own right). Don’t Worry is a period piece about an unhappy housewife boasting an all star cast including Florence Pugh, Kiki Layne, Harry Styles and Gemma Chan. At the very least it will be beautiful to look at.

Little Mother dir. Céline Sciamma

Not much has been said about Sciamma’s 5th film aside from the fact that it will focus on the friendship between two 8 year olds in Paris but a new Sciamma film is always a cause for celebration.

The Nightingale dir. Mélanie Laurent

This was supposed to come out last year but covid-19 completely mangled the shooting schedule and it was pushed back a year. The film features the real life Fanning sisters (Dakota and Elle) playing French sisters trying to survive in German occupied France during WWII.

Marry Me dir. Kat Coiro

I make no secret about the fact that I love a good romcom and this one sounds delightful. Jennifer Lopez will play a pop star who at the last second marries a fan instead of her celebrity partner she’s discovered is unfaithful. It sounds delightfully tropey, like a screwball comedy. I can’t wait. It’s also good to see Coiro back in the directing seat again. She made a slew of solid indies before disappearing into TV work.

The Matrix 4 dir. Lana Wachowski

I kind of rolled my eyes when I first heard about this because it seemed like a cash grab from the WB. The last Matrix movie came out in 2003! Yet everything I keep hearing about it sounds bananas. Details have been kept under wraps but the leaks sound bizarre and meta (the Matrix trilogy exists in world in the Matrix 4 which means Keanu Reeves plays Keanu Reeves who is actually Neo???) I don’t know if this is real but I can’t wait to find out.

Passing dir. Rebecca Hall

An adaptation of Nella Larsen’s novel of the same name Passing is about two women, both of whom appear white but have black heritage and one of whom decides to live a life passing as white and the other who doesn’t. It’s personal material for Hall who has a black parent.

Persuasion dir. Mahalia Belo

This is probably going to be a 2022 film but I’m already excited for it. An adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion the film will follow former flames Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth who reunite later in life when their fortunes are reversed. One of my favourite Austen adaptations this one is also written by Jessica Swale (who wrote and directed Summerland) and looks to race-bend Wentworth’s character (which actually would work extremely well with the story). I love it, I can’t wait, and I’m excited that there will be another “straight” adaptation of Austen’s work directed by a woman (in addition to all the modernizations and spin-offs).

The Power of the Dog dir. Jane Campion

This is not a drill people! Campion is back with her first movie since 2009! Based on the book of the same name by Thomas Savage it follows two brothers who fall out over one brother’s new wife. Kirsten Dunst is in it and I can’t think of a better match up than Campion and Dunst, both of whom have championed women directors (well, white women directors) over the years.

The Story of My Wife dir. Ildikó Enyedi

This was supposed to come out last year but covid-19 disrupted its scheduled release. Based on a novel of the same name The Story is about a man who makes a bet that he will marry the next woman to walk into a café and then becomes jealously obsessed with her once he succeeds. Léa Seydoux is the titular wife but I’m more fascinated with what Enyedi will do with the material as she’s such a thoughtful charming and playful director.

Women Talking dir. Sarah Polley

It has been a decade since Polley last directed a film, her amazing self-reflective documentary Stories We Tell. Well she’s back, uniting with Frances McDormand to adapt this novel by Miriam Toews about a group of Mennonite who have been given an unbearable choice: to either forgive and welcome serial rapists and leaders of their community back into the fold or be expelled themselves. Heavy stuff that I have confidence Polley will adapt thoughtfully.

Belos: THEN DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!! -Baby Luz and Hunter start to cry- Look what you did!

Young Kiki: Wha- WHAT?! But I--

Belos: -Driving his attention to the babies- Don't worry my little ones, that mean pepper goblin is already leaving -Watching Kikimora- Get out.

Context: idk one day I was just thinking how adorable it could be if an evil overlord shuts up one of his henchmen because his priority is taking care of his (Adopted) babies, then I said, what if it's at The Owl House, because, we have the evil overlord (Belos), the servant that nobody likes (Kikimora, bring Raine back!) and two beautiful cinnamon rolls that everyone considers brothers (Luz and Hunter)

And ta-da! An AU comes out of those thoughts, where Luz, idk maybe was yeeted to the other dimension and end up on Belos hands, and because of her PURE presence Belos start to became soft. You know what? That’s the name of this “AU”: “Soft Belos” I never saw someone use this name (Yet) so, that’s how I’m gonna call this......Maybe “Daddy Belos”?....Nah, sound like [Censored] Soft is good...

Mia, episode two

1. Finally, it looks like we’re getting some alone time with Mia. I’m not 100% sure what’s going on in this scene, but I guess Mia must have pulled Kiki’s name out of the secret santa? And Mia has forgotten to get her something? It’s interesting to see the thought she put into looking for something for Kiki, and how she has enough empathy and consideration to not give over the book on eating. We’ve seen a huge amount of how worried Mia is about Kiki and her eating habits, so I can see why it was tempting to give over the book. One of the things I have found difficult about Mia so far is that she is very opinionated and very firm in pushing those opinions onto others. It feels like she’s even more like this than Noora was (though it’s been a very long time since I watched Noora’s season for the one and only time so she may have been just as bad), so it’s good to see that she can step outside those opinions and think about how others may perceive something. Still, a printed card is not a good alternative.

2. This gift sharing scene is absolutely gorgeous. The colours here are so pretty, and all the girls look wonderful!! It’s all so warm and has a glorious sort of glow about it. Oh but how awkward that Kiki was so thoughtful to Mia and Mia... wasn’t. Poor Kiki’s face when she sees it :(

3. Hanna’s father is still being critical? Bleh. I guess some things never change. And Mia tries to step in and help, but it makes it worse in some way? Like, it feels like he’s basically saying ‘why can’t you stop being you and start being this other girl?’ which I’m sure feeds into a whole lot of Hanna’s insecurities. No wonder she was still down on herself, lost and confused, in s3. Also me in this scene: ‘please just go away, Alex’ - I really don’t like him. I’m still not sure why she’s messaging with him, or why she has his number saved separately in her phone. Then she’s all ‘stop harrassing me’ as if that rings true at all. Mia, if you really wanted him to stop messaging etc, you’d have blocked him and wouldn’t interact. This already looks like a charade, and I hate where I know it’s going :(

4. Totally unrelated to the content of this clip, but I cannot stand the sound of people eating, so listening to Mia crunch on her food is excruciating. I’m hoping this is a very short clip! Ohhh yikes, Mia’s parents are also pretty awful in an ignorant and unintentionally offensive way. But it’s very nice to see Mia defending Hanna - I stand by my suggestion that she quite likes her. I don’t think it was any mistake that Hanna was the one she chose to kiss to put Alex off. ‘Why do all our conversations have to end like this?’ Well, probably because you’re ignorant and unintentionally offensive and when you’re called out for it, you get defensive rather than trying to understand what’s being said. It was nice to end with Hans, though. Even though his little story is very sad.

5. Alex gave Kiki a voucher for Christmas for breast surgery? What a dick. I still cannot see what this show can do to make me like this guy. Even if she asked for the voucher in some bizarre way (that story is a bit odd), she’s a vulnerable young woman and he’s been playing with her feelings a huge amount while also still pursuing Mia. The idea that he plays into her insecurities by doing this is ... ugh. This is just plain gross. ‘It’s a little bit cute, isn’t it?’ no Kiki, it isn’t. Ouch and then Mia is trying to tell them that he’s still pressuring her into a date, and they cut her off. And then Alex doubles down on the assholery by literally saying he’ll end things with Kiki if Mia will date him. Once again - blackmail is not cool or sexy or sweet or whatever they’re going for here. It’s gross and dehumanising for both girls. Yeah, this whole situation is shitty. I blame William. All of this is his fault really. The colouring etc here is also interesting - Mia is in the washed out and pale colours against pale backgrounds that we usually see with Alex. A suggestion that she’s moving into Alex’s world maybe? Or that she is now a washed out version of herself/compromising herself?

6. Interesting that Mia removes the lipstick here while she’s getting ready. My memory of Noora doing it is because William told her he liked it, rather than here where she does it because she doesn’t want to look good for Alex. Also interesting the way it’s been framed - in the mirror but also not quite fully framed. It reinforces that she’s not entirely ‘there’ or not entirely herself. And then the clear and obvious way Alex is lying to Kiki. What’s interesting is that I sort of forgive this in Matteo (he does something like this to Sara as well, after all) I guess because we’re in his PoV, but here we’re not in Alex’s PoV, we know all the background and we know that as well as being a liar and an asshole, Alex is also blackmailing Mia. So it feels worse. I’m not sure why Mia told Hans all this stuff, and also, she didn’t do a good job of it - her reasoning is actually fine, and he’s blackmailing her so adding that would have made the argument stronger. As it is, she looks like a dick who’s screwing over her friend.

7. Here we have more of these super close up shots like we did at the start of the first episode. I’m finding it just as awkward and uncomfortable as I did then. I don’t really know why they’re here. If we’re genuinely supposed to be feeling uncomfortable, that doesn’t bode well for the relationship, but I can’t see why else these shots would be here. Alex ‘are you going to be pissy the whole time?’ Yes, probably. You’re BLACKMAILING her and treating her friend like shit as if the whole thing is a game. What do you expect her to feel? Why do expect her to think your ‘surprise’ is going to be good? You have a reputation and everything she sees of you lives up to it. Also interesting: the cool colours Mia is in with Alex compared to the girls. The difference between the two is quite stark.

8. ‘What do you mean I’ve blackmailed you?’ Oh, Alex - she means exactly that you’ve blackmailed her. Which you have. Then he tries to justify it. Just like William’s version of this chat, I hate this. ‘you’re lying to your friend and blaming me’ - acting like he has no culpability in the situation. He literally refused to respect her boundaries and stop pursuing her and he literally said that Kiki means nothing to him when he knows she’s more all-in than he is and is playing around with her insecurities. I hate that he’s trying to make Mia feel like she’s to blame for a situation he literally created. He had the ability to not date Kiki when he wasn’t into it. He has the ability to stop pressuring Mia. He has the ability to break up with Kiki if he wants Mia. This is not her fault!!! And just like when William said it, ‘I wanted to hurt her to make her feel less bad in the long run’ is a terrible, shitty thing to say and do, and if they do what they did with William and make it a ‘see, I was right to be mean to her to start’ I will be so angry!! It’s not an either/or situation. First he didn’t have to have sex with her, second he didn’t have to go out with her again. It’s not her fault that she thinks there’s a chance - they’re pretty much dating exclusively at the moment. None of his ‘reasonable’ excuses are actually reasonable.

Upshot of this scene: I loathe Alex even more now than I did before. And I freely admit a lot of this is William’s fault, but nothing that’s happened so far has made Alex any more likeable to me than William in the original. I still think Mia should run far far far away after this conversation. And I hate that accepting the cocoa means accepting his reasoning. His reasoning is not a whole ‘gotcha’ that he thinks it is. He is a completely different person to Kiki and playing with her and being mean to her was shitty.

So...I thought that I’d give you all a list of my favourite fanfic’s that I read in 2019! I’ll include the description that was given by the author and then give a brief commentary of my own! ; My Thoughts: I rec’d this fic very recently but I still remember it well. Demon Jungkook is weirdly caring for her despite her being human and him being demon from the Underworld. The reader...well she has no sense of self-preservation honestly haha. I enjoyed everything about this; the smut, the world building, the characterisation and so much more!

Matters Of The Heart by @hobidreams

; My Thoughts: I maintain that I LOVE THIS FIC SO MUCH. I think it’s probably like...in my top list of fics all year. It’s just...amazing. The writing feels authentic to the era and the reader is a delightful rebel that we all love from Victorian eras after all. And of course...Mr Jung is just a ridiculously attractive man that I would like very much. Rain is apparently making a follow up drabble AND I AM EXCITED!

; My Thoughts: This series of drabbles has completely stolen my heart. Dae is adorable and the reader is delightful in how she loves her kids. And then there’s Hoseok, the grumpy businessman who’s incredibly rich yet adorably dotes on his daughter and doesn’t get mad at her. It’s just...fluffy and angsty softness. I love it so much, and the smut was...oof. I can’t wait to read more!

; My Thoughts: I MAINTAIN THAT I LOVE THIS FIC SO MUCH AHHH. It’s so unique and beautifully written, such a delight to read and I enjoy it every time I do. The mixing of the ages throughout the years and how Hoseok evidently has knowledge of their future together but doesn’t tell her. It’s so sweet and yet so organic how they come together. It could be weird and creepy given the difference in ages continuously but it’s not. He’s always a gentleman and it’s just...it’s just wonderful honestly.

; Synopsis: he doesn’t need to say it. because you can feel your husband, park jimin, falling out of love with you.

; My Thoughts: Okay but like, I still feel the pain and sadness when I read this fic the first time :( the reader’s confusion and pain at being abandoned so thoughtlessly despite her efforts is so hard to read. I still hate Jimin for doing it, and I’m glad that he stopped and realised that he was making a mistake. But poor reader will never be able to fully trust him again and always be worried to some degree :(

Lost And Found 01: Tick Tock by @fortunexkookie

; Peter Pan!Hoseok x Captain Hook!Reader

; Synopsis: The only hope you had at ending your exile and earning your life back came in the form of an infuriating and uncatchable man: Hoseok. He seemed to love the endless game of cat-and-mouse you two played - so much, in fact, that you were unsure if you were the cat or the mouse. What he failed to realize was that there was a third player, and this one wasn’t after him. The Crocodile hunted you with an intensity that rivaled the way you chased Hoseok, but with one difference: the games he played were deadly.

; My Thoughts: Okay so like...a lot of my favourite fics ever this year have been Hoseok based. You’re not surprised, I know you’re not. But this fic is just...I cannot WAIT for the second and third parts of it. The world is so richly realised and the characters have such phenomenal characterisation and development in just this one chapter. It’s so...involving to read, you just get lost in it. It’s truly a beautiful work of art that I can’t wait to see how everything goes!

Jungle Park by @jimlingss

; Synopsis: The equation is simple. Hoseok needs to hire someone. You need a job. Except like any actual equation, it’s not fucking simple at all! Not when you have to add the fact that he was forced to hire someone he doesn’t want in his office, he has little respect for your job in general, and oh yeah…once upon a time you might have—*CENSORED*.

; My Thoughts: I looooooved reading this fic. Jimlingsss is basically why I made Flower a once a week thing, because when I was reading Jungle Park, I was always SO EXCITED for Monday’s because it meant I got to read a new Jungle Park! It’s such a slow burn romance but it’s so delightful and rewarding watching this cold and moody lawyer warm up to his bright and bubbly HR person. And then you learn the backstory between them and...I just loved it all!

Magic and Mysteries by @jimlingss

; Jimin x Reader

; Synopsis: Everything’s okay….EVERYTHING’S OKAY, YOU’RE FINE. Look, you just have one tiny problem. It’s an itty-bitty issue. Not that big of a deal. So what if you don’t have a familiar and you’re about to take on the ENTIRE family business. Oh, you have a name to uphold? Everyone’s depending on you? Great. That’s just fantastic. But it’s fine. You’ll get your familiar and you’ll run the best damn potion shop the world has ever seen. Everything will be fine, right?

; My Thoughts: Again, another Jimlingsss story but honestly, they’re always golden. I particularly remember this fic because I read it when I was in Korea. It’s so delightful and fun, reminding me a lot of Kiki’s Delivery Service. Jimin is a little rascal but I love that he teases her because he genuinely cares. It’s all just a truly wonderful fic and story put together in one delightful package.

; My Thoughts: I do quite enjoy reading Hogwarts fics, and I particularly enjoying reading Hogwarts fics with BTS as students as long as there’s no smut in it. Gukyi’s Hogwarts series was such a delight to read and I remember reading this fic with a smile on my face. Wanting to scream at reader because POOR TAEHYUNG OBVIOUSLY LOVES YOU. Poor guy trying so hard despite everything :(

Lovers’ Fuck Rule by @prolixitae

; Jungkook x Reader x Hoseok

; Synopsis: jungkook is still new to your established relationship with hoseok, which means he needs a little help feeling competent sometimes. especially when it comes to sex. alternatively, the span of a poly relationship over inaccurate amounts of fucking.

; My Thoughts: Okay look, I don’t do shipping or anything but Junghope is one of the best friendships/combinations there is. And this fic encapsulates why. Jungkook is so nervous with her whereas Hoseok is just...so unbelievably calm and dominant about it all. He knows exactly what gets his girl off and it’s sweet how amused he is by Jungkook. You can feel the slight insecurity almost off Jungkook because Hoseok has been with her for years but you can also feel the genuine love the reader has for him, along with the friendship Hoseok obviously has too. I really enjoyed it all!

; My Thoughts: You know I love Hoseok, and this smut was just...oh my god wow. Bizarrely, I explicitly remember reading it while in the cinema waiting for a film to start haha. TNS Hoseok is amazing though and I really love him. In this fic he’s even more amazing though and I just...god I want him so badly. Urgh, 10/10

He’s just...the perfect boyfriend honestly. It just so happens he does porn too...I honestly loved this so much!

But then you’ve got Hoseok, the new guy on the block who’s ridiculously good. The sex is just...it feels so realistic and like it’s two people in a relationship having sex and not just being filmed on camera. God I want them together lol

; My Thoughts: Look...I still can’t believe I read a fic with zombie sex and that I actively WANTED to read a fic with zombie sex lol. But disregarding that, it’s still phenomenally written and the world is built up so well! I loved reading this and it didn’t feel as long as it’s word count. The characters were interesting with little tidbits being thrown out there that made you a little more interested in their history.

; My Thoughts: At this point, I think I just love anything by this author. But this fic was so...real and beautiful. The connection between two people who want more from life and deserve from life, who are both stuck. Hoseok’s story is heart breaking and getting to see him slowly come to life and learn to care for himself again was beautiful, while seeing the reader getting to care for herself by caring for him was just beautiful as well.

; My Thoughts: I love this story so much :333 it’s such an interesting twist on hybrid’s in that there are ones who get discarded because they’re ‘defective’. It’s horrible to think about and I just want to love both of them. Jin is so...sweet and he tries so hard, being the one to put himself out there with the reader because Taehyung is just a sweet and shy bub. Seeing them come to life slowly is so rewarding!

And she loves him, accepting him as he is and not pushing for more than he’s willing to give!

a/n: this idea came to me and gave me an excuse to rewatch one of my favourite movies~

“I need plates!”

“Is the sauce ready?”

“One soupe à l’oignon, one salade niçoise!”

Not quite used to the organized chaos around you, it’s with a slight wince that you drag your focus back to skinning the tomatoes. Kiki’s cheerful humming reaches you as she comes near your station, grabbing the bottle of wine Willow had left on the counter.

You’re confident enough when it comes to cooking, but admittedly far from perfect—which just won’t do. Sure enough, you’re wincing again as your hair suffers for your wandering mind.

“Too thick. Stop daydreaming, you’ll ruin the dish. Thinner.” There’s a slight pause, filled with the soft, rhythmic sounds of your knife hitting the chopping board. “Yes, good.”

A small, unbidden smile curls along your mouth at the praise.

“The zucchini.”

You reach for the mandoline, slicing the yellow zucchini, then the green. Once the eggplant is done, the low-pitched voice of your mentor drifts down once more.

“The saucier should be nearly done with the sauce. If he’s messed with my recipe…” The warning is clear.

Unable to help it, you tilt your head to the side, catching your reflection in the glass window, and that of your helper. Eyes reminiscent of stormy skies glower at nothing in particular, and then over at Lucien’s station, where he is indeed working on the sauce.

You would be afraid—you should be afraid, for he has the wrath of Zeus and his pettiness too—if it weren’t for the physical signs of his ire. Because a pissed off Victor means: little whiskers, quivering with vexation, his tiny nose twitching with constant feedback from the rich scents in the room, and his beady eyes narrowed suspiciously.

It doesn’t exactly make you scream with terror. Even so, you know to keep your thoughts to yourself, because the last time you had mocked him, you were stuck cleaning your bedroom for a while.

You will never forget waking up to the sight of him perched on your chin, staring down at you with a menacing gleam in his beady eyes.

He tugs at your hair, impatient, and you make your way over to Lucien’s station, passing by Willow arguing with Minor, who had just come back with a new order.

“No, Willow, I didn’t mishear! He really did order coke and pepsi. Mixed.”

Victor’s ears twitch at the words, followed by a quiet mutter of something terribly uncharitable.

He can be a bit high-strung. Thankfully, a trip to the supermarket is usually enough to appease any bristling; you avoid angering him anyway, because those trips are terrible for your wallet.

According to the rodent himself, Victor grew up in the sewers and whatever kitchens he could find. You’re not sure how that experience turned him into one of the biggest food snobs you’ve ever met—and you work in the food industry—but it’s probably for the best, since it contributes to his brilliance with cooking.

Still, him turning his bulbous nose up at the cheese you’d been eating for years did sting. He also forced you to clean out half of the ingredients in your refrigerator and bullied you into buying fancy cheeses you’d never even tasted before.

“Well, well,” he says now, peering down from your head at the bowl Lucien presents to you. “That doesn’t look half-bad.”

“I wouldn’t dare mess around with y/n’s dish,” Lucien responds evenly, offering you a quick wink as you take the bowl.

“Thank you, Lucien.” If your tone is a tad warmer than usual, it’s between the two of you. Well, three, you amend hastily as Victor digs his feet into your scalp lightly.

“I told you, you can’t give him the time of day until he passes the test,” Victor hisses at you, glaring back when Lucien waves.

“No one is ever going to match your standards for cooking,” you mutter, spooning some of the sauce into the pan.

“Certainly not him,” he sniffs, watching over you as you arrange the sliced vegetables in the pan. He’s careful to not tug on your hair when you slide the dish into the oven.

“But he’s cute,” you whisper plaintively, watching Lucien chop some very lucky carrots. Not that you want to be chopped up, but he does handle his ingredients well.

“Is that why you’re staring at his hands?”

“They’re beautiful hands.”

“I suppose his chopping skills are up to par,” Victor muses, whiskers twitching as he thinks. “Better than yours, at least.”

“Maybe you should sit on his head,” you suggest cheerfully.

“I’m pretty sure he’d cook me,” he says flatly, and you both have to wince at that. He may be a tiny jerk, but Victor is a dear friend. You’ve developed some very protective tendencies over the course of your friendship, what with every other cat looking to take a bite out of him.

The neighbour’s cat, Hades, has been something of a nightmare. As a result, you’ve also developed fantastic reflexes and a strained relationship with Helios, the cat’s owner.

“What do you want for dinner tonight? I was thinking quiche,” Victor thinks aloud, examining his claws critically. His coat, as always, is dark and glossy. People are skeptical enough due to what he is, there’s no need to give them more reason to doubt him, he says.

Somehow, though, throughout all of this, you’ve also been spoiled to bits.

“Y/n?”

Getting to eat such wonderful food everyday? It’s a blessing.

“Y/n.”

If only things could stay this way forever.

“Wake up, you dummy.”

With a choked gasp, you sit bolt upright, looking around wildly. It takes a moment for you to reorient; you’re in the kitchen, you place of work. You had been in the middle of cleaning up and then—

The back of a hand touches your forehead, and your panicked eyes follow the length of a long arm before coming to rest on a familiar face.

“A fever,” he murmurs, kneeling next to where you seemed to have collapsed on the floor. “Why did you not inform me?”

The Chef de Cuisine, Victor Li, whose kitchen you had joined about a month ago, frowns down at you. Victor, who had just made a frankly bizarre appearance in your dream.

You study him carefully, your hazy mind imagining whiskers wiggling over his perfect cheekbones. He raises a single, sculpted brow in response.

“I was supposed to be cleaning up…” you recall, looking around nervously. You had managed to clean up most of the kitchen before you had apparently blacked out, but there are a few dishes left next to the sink.

“Yes, I know,” he says, patient, before standing up and offering you a hand. You take it with a little trepidation, expecting meticulously groomed claws instead of blunt fingernails. “Go wait outside, I’ll finish up in here and give you a ride home.”

Left to gape as he turns to the sink, you flail your arms and sputter in protest. Your throbbing head offers its own protest. “No! I mean—I can do it, I’m so sorry—”

He presses one, slender index finger to his lips, and the words die in your throat. He points the same finger at the doors, where the moonlight peers in through the two circular windows.

“I...okay,” you grab your bag and head for the exit, shoulders slumped. Still, you can’t accept a ride home, knowing it’ll be way out of his way.

“If you leave, you’ll be on scrubbing duty for a whole week.” The borderline peremptory words are eerily reminiscent of the ones from your dream.

They’re oddly comforting.

“Yes, chef,” you call back, trying not to smile.

Pitch Me your thing!

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.

So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.

NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.

Entry 4 for Obiyuki Bingo - Medical Drama AU

...

Zen leaned against the counter as he watched Shirayuki grind at her medicines with a pestle. “Isn’t that a little old school?”

The pharmacist looked up from her work. “Better get off of there before Garrack sees you.” Zen smiled sheepishly and pushed himself away; lead surgeon or not, no one messed with the director of pharmacy. “And it might be old school, but if I’ve got the spare time, I like using it. It makes our ointments and medicines more potent.”

“Always working, even in your spare time,” Zen shook his head grinning. “No wonder my brother says I need to learn from you.”

“Really? I didn’t think he was too wild about me.”

“No, he wasn’t too wild about us dating - big brother’s snobbish.” Zen shrugged. “He never had anything but respect for your skills.”

Shirayuki flushed. “Well, thanks. I think.” She busied herself with the pestle.

Zen reached up to the ceiling, and she could hear his shoulders pop. “I’m taking advantage of the rest while I can. i know the medevac went out not too long ago, so it’s a matter of time before I get paged back in there.”

Right on cue, his phone began vibrating and buzzing on his hip. He undid the clasp holding the phone in place and looked at the screen. His face went pale.

Shirayuki felt her blood run cold. For as dramatic as Zen could get off the clock. While on shift, he was as cool and unflappable as they come. For him to have any sort of visceral reaction was out of character and concerning. “What is it?”

“Medevac’s coming in; the OR just got radioed by Torou.”

“Is it bad?”

“Kids having to get to the hospital by helicopter is never good, but his injuries aren’t too bad.” Zen continued in a level tone. “The other injuries, though -”

“What other injuries?”

The look in Zen’s eyes as they met hers made her heart stop. “It’s not good, Shirayuki.” He sighed, and his voice just barely wavered. “It’s Obi.”

“Obi?”

...

The day had started out so normally - with their colleagues in the hospital cafeteria struggling awake to be alert and ready for the upcoming shift. Shirayuki was rubbing her eyes and yawning as Obi was reaching the end of another story.

“And I leapt out of the window, just out of reach of the flames, and made it to the helicopter in the nick of time!”

Shirayuki turned to Torou, who watched Obi’s storytelling with a resigned detachment. “The window?”

“Don’t ask me,” Torou shrugged, her large earrings clinking softly against her shoulders. “He went inside through the window too, even though there was a perfectly serviceable door not far away.”

“You want me to give the fire more oxygen, Torou?” Obi asked. “The window was open and available, and I saw an injured person. It made sense.”

“Whatever, rogue,” Torou snorted, examining her manicure, “you just like living dangerously.”

“How,” Mitsuhide asked, “did you get the patient through the window? I didn’t see a scratch on him when I assessed him.”

Torou rolled her eyes. “Because we carried him out through the door.”

Mitsuhide groaned and turned back to his perfectly portioned, well-balanced breakfast. Kiki raised an eyebrow over her plain bagel and dark roast. “Can’t do anything the easy way, can you?”

“Nope,” Obi replied cheerfully, taking a big bite of his bacon, “that’s why I don’t fly the helicopter.”

“You don’t fly the helicopter,” Torou countered, slight fire in her eyes, “because you’d crash in two seconds, rogue.”

“Yeah,” he agreed, “I leave the fancy flying to you - lets me get to jump through windows and be all heroic.”

Zen rolled his eyes. “Just try not to get yourself or our patents killed being a hero.”

Shirayuki snorted into her granola and fruit at Obi’s affronted look. “Boss,” he lay a hand on his heart dramatically, “I would never -”

“Don’t worry, boss,” Torou interjected, “I’m also there to keep him in line.”

Shirayuki had managed to smother her impulses towards worrying until she and Obi were in the locker room. “Did you really need to go through the window?”

“It made sense at the time, Miss,” Obi closed the locker and looked at her seriously. “I didn’t know if it would be safe to go through the door, and when I saw someone unconscious, the first thing I had to do was check on them.”

That made sense, but Shirayuki still felt uneasy. It must have shown on her face, because Obi took a step forward and placed a hand on her shoulder. “I’m always safe, Miss.”

Shirayuki didn’t say anything, but her eyes strayed to where the pale lines of long-healed scars gleamed past the sleeves of his shirt and above his eye.

“I know my limits.”

Shirayuki sighed. He was good at what he did, despite his bravado there was no doubt about that. But she spent as much time worrying about his stunts as she did being impressed by them. And by his bravery. Maybe she could be brave, too. She opened her mouth to speak, but stopped.

Obi looked puzzled. “Miss?”

Do you maybe want to go to dinner with me? She sighed. Not brave enough yet. “Just be safe, please?”

He grinned at her, making her wish she was braver. “Cross my heart,” he promised, “I’ll always come back to you.” He coughed and blushed, turning away just as Shirayuki to hide the own hopeful burning in her cheeks.

Shirayuki was a seasoned professional, and had seen her fair share of blood and injury, even as far removed as the pharmacy was from the OR. But it was with trembling legs that she stepped outside after she could no longer force herself to focus on her medicines. She took a deep breath of air, and felt it burn her lungs as she shut her eyes. There had been so much blood...

“Head wounds always bleed a lot,” she muttered, continuing the mantra that had kept her from storming the OR or breaking down crying. “It might not be as bad as it looked.”

“Here’s hoping.”

Shirayuki gasped and turned to face the source of the sound. Torou sat at one of the picnic tables, a lit cigarette smoldering between her fingers. As Shirayuki looked over, she brought it to her lips and took a deep drag on it. “Hey, Red.”

“What happened?” Shirayuki asked, rushing over to where she sat.

“Kid was hurt.” Deep drag. “Got himself stuck up a tree. Crying, scared.” Another drag. “I know we should have landed, but that damn fool swore to me that he could make it. I believed him too.” She let out a laugh that sounded like she was close to becoming unravelled. Shirayuki noted her hair, normally somehow contained in its chaos, was in disarray. “Two damn fools. Climbed that tree like a monkey, got the kid to laugh and let go of the trunk. The limb could hold one, but not two. Next thing I knew, he was throwing the kid through the open hatch. And then he was gone.”

She sniffed. “He hit a lot of branches on the way down, so that hopefully slowed him down.” She took another drag, and looked to where Shirayuki was staring at her cigarette. “I know, I know, these are going to kill me one of these days.”

Shirayuki didn’t launch until her typical lecture on the addictiveness of nicotine. She simply reached out a hand. “Give me one, please.”

Torou drew back in surprise. “No chance, Red. Obi would never forgive me if I got you hooked on this stuff.”

Shirayuki had to swallow hard. Torou never referred to Obi by his name, just by a myriad of colorful and occasionally bizarre nicknames. And she never cried, but neither woman could ignore the tears building up in her eyes

The redhead reached forward to place a comforting hand on the pilot’s shoulder, and she was so upset she allowed it.

“He’ll be okay, Torou.”

“Yeah,” she sniffed roughly.

Shirayuki bit her lip. He has to be.

She settled back in the uncomfortable chair and stared at where Obi was resting in the hospital bed. It hurt to see him lying so still, when he was usually by energetic and full of life. Only the slight rise and fall of his chest, and the reassuring beeps of the monitor showed he was alive.

Boldness and desperation made her reach forward to take his hand in hers, to feel the warmth and pulse beneath her fingers. Please wake up.

His face was mottled with bruises, his head wrapped snugly with bandages, and the stark white of the casts stuck out beneath his hospital gown. She shuddered and began rubbing her thumb against the back of his hand, whether to comfort him or herself she wasn’t sure.

“I wish I had been in there,” she whispered, “I wish I could have been more help.”

It had been all hands on deck to care for the injured. The child fortunately only suffered a wrist fracture and skilled knees from being flung into the medevac. Obi had taken much longer, and the faces of her friends had been grim when they came out.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” Zen had said with an expression that looked painfully like the one he wore when passing bad news to grieving loved ones. “It was touch and go for a while. But it’s up to him now.

Why did I have to be a pharmacist? She thought bitterly. I could have been in there. I could have helped instead of just waiting and feeling helpless.

A tear dropped. “I’m so useless.”

“Don’t...say...that.”

Shirayuki jumped at the slight pressure on her palm. “Obi?”

“Don’t ever,” he opened his eyes blearily, “ever say that. You could never be useless.”

She held back from hugging him with an effort. “You’re alive!”

He tried to strike a pose in the bed, but winced and coughed. “Mostly.”

Shirayuki could have said a lot of things right then.

Don’t ever do that again, you idiot.

So did, You nearly scared me to death.

And, I love you.

Instead, she settled for - “Do you want to go out for dinner with me? Once you feel better?”

Obi looked puzzled, and then inordinately pleased. His grip tightened almost painfully, but Shirayuki didn’t care. “Yes.”

HO BOY.

I LOVE long asks when I have the braincells! *He says, as if he ever has braincells*

ANYWAY.

I’m going to go with just the movie for now, since I’ve only read the first volume of the comics yet and there’s definitely some changes.

This post is long, so I put all my brain rambles beneath the cut.

I also cheated and only did the Guard themselves for some brevity, if you want extensions with Copley, etc. I’ll do a part two :)

Andy/ Andromache the Scythian

ANDY. ANDY. ANDY ANDYYYYYYYYYYY.

I love her. I love her SO MUCH. I regret that I never really explore her as much as I want to. Because there is just SO MUCH THERE. There is so much to work with, to explore to understand and to see. I adore her. She’s jaded, but she’s also clearly somewhat passionate in her own way. Something has kept her going this long. She loves her family. She is at her most open and honest and vulnerable with her family!

The world gets a facade, her calm, collective glance of ‘I don’t give a fuck but I actually do give a fuck but letting you know I give a fuck makes things complicated’. But when she’s with Nicky and Joe, (and Booker), she’s laughing, she’s enjoying their company. She looks so happy and instantly relaxes and I JUST!!

I love that she’s not some 19 year old (possible ageism). I love that they let a 45 year old actress play a character who is clearly over 30 and very much badass. The whole ‘only young women or very old women in movies’ trope is so old, so overdone. (And I’m still salty about this person who said it’s bullshit to see ‘grandma Charlize beating up men twice her size’, as if Liam Nesson doesn’t do just that in his seventies BUT ANYWAY).

Andy is SO multilayered. She’s clearly struggling, and she’s angry and cynical and OH so fucking tired, but she’s still VERY LOVING. She cares about Nile, she cares about her family, she CARES. She’s allowed to be upset! She’s allowed to be ugly emotionally (as they might say it in Hollywood, ffs), she’s allowed to be angry and happy and sweet and she has agency and vulnerability and I JUST LOVE THAT.\

She can also step on me I mean what.

ANYWAY.

Nile Freeman

NILE. NILE MADAM.

Nile is just a MARVEL. She’s sweet. She’s caring. She has ALL the heart and takes NONE of the shit!! There’s so much to her. She’s devoted (I really love that she’s religious, and that the movie doesn’t take this away from her, regardless of things that happen). I love how utterly devoted she is. I love that she’s able to retain so much of her own personal autonomy, AND that she’s both scared and confused, but also SECURE.

Nile doesn’t know WTF is happening. First kill in the Marines, very sudden death, you have a brand new family? Oh, you also can’t see your family again? Your mother and brother? Oh and this lady with the bizarre name has effectively kidnapped you so you can’t be shipped to a lab in Germany? THE FUCK.

Kiki does such a MAGNIFICENT job too! Like the amount of emotions she conveys!! All of Nile’s confusion, anger, upset. Hurt. How throughout all this, she’s shown as street smart! Clever! ADPATABLE.

Nile becomes something ‘new’ but retains her original personality entirely. And I LOVE that. She is young, but she isn’t babied. She’s allowed to be guided without being considered infantile. She’s allowed to be here whole self and it’s SO GOOD.

Also, you wake up in a Humvee in the desert and your first instinct is to kick the back end out and roll away? And then stab your kidnapper?? AMAZING.

I love that she’s an art nerd. I love her enthusiasm, I love her heart. I love her cleverness. I love how she can be a bit “wtf’ but also flat out doesn’t take ANYONE’S bullshit EVER.

Sebastien Le Livre/ Booker

(Rucka once again I ask you, was that name only for the punning? Because I love puns to but cmon)

So..Booker.

I’m..I’m not neutral, but I tend to not think about him much beyond what is necessary. I think I’d feel that my thoughts on him are ‘complicated’ so I’ll keep his section short. I WILL say that his character is VERY well written. Booker cannot be called a flat character. And maybe I’m naive, but my first time watching the movie? Yeah, totally goddamned BLINDSIDED. And I give the movie a LOT of credit for that.

Maybe smarter people saw it coming, but I sure didn’t. So hey, kudos.

I understand him. I understand his motivations. And for a person suffering from that kind of depression, the toxic sabotaging kind, yeah. It’s well done. His motives are..his motives. I’ll probably not ever know what it feels like to outlive your children. But lots of my family members did. I get how it destroys you.

However, Booker needs help. And it’s on Booker, IMO, to get that help, outside of his family. Because he hurt them. He hurt them badly. It’s not the kind of thing you just come back from.

Consider my attitude..curious.

Joe/Yusuf Al-Kaysani

I can’t make this too long I can’t make this too long I can’t-

JOE. Is a MARVELOUS MAN. He’s soft. He’s artistic. He’s strong and sweet and his entire face lights up like the actual honest to god sun that he IS. I love how much he loves. I love how compassionate he is. I love his passion. His soft voice. His kind caring attitude.

BUT AS A FLIP SIDE.

I love how badass he is. I go slightly feral from the bullet spitting ‘very pissed off’. DARLING, NO KIDDING. I love how he’s just got this kinda hidden swag element. He is so clearly the life source of every room he enters. Show stealer. He’s the one that makes people feel comfortable immediately. With charm and boastfulness. With just such great WARMTH. Joe feels like a fireplace. You just want to curl up with him.

He cares so much about the world. His husband. His family.

Imagine someone LOOKING AT YOU THAT WAY. No wonder Nicky is downright wavering on us. I’D FAINT.

Joe seems to love the world around him so much. And yeah, okay, he holds out with justified anger. (I SUPPORT THIS ANGER), but he’s also clearly affectionate. He’s open with his love. Joe literally wears his heart on his sleeve. You KNOW how Joe is feeling at all times. Because Joe can’t hide it. And if you have his love and friendship, you have it forever.

Joe could do audiobooks. Joe could paint museums full of paintings.

And those curls? Best. Incredible.

Marwan made Joe into such an incredible character I LOVE HIM YOUR HONOUR SIR I LOVE HIM.

Nicky/ Nicolò di Genova

Ahhh Joe’s other half. Man of few words, but when those words come out they cut and say so DAMNED MUCH. And what isn’t said vocally is always said with a look, a smile. MICRO EXPRESSIONS THAT SPEAK THE WORLD.

Nicky seems like such an aware character. Nicky is the type that makes very conscious decisions every single day. Be kind. Daily. This is not the type of man who does anything lightly. I feel like Nicky is a calculated sort, but with EVERYTHING. Because he KNOWS that your presence in this world makes an impact. He knows how important being self-aware is. He feels so lucky and grateful to be with Joe and his family at all times.

I LOVE HIS SNIPING. I love his outfits! I love how intense and sweet and compassionate he is. I feel like he has some little shit energy. Doing something slightly devious? Probably. Having ideas just because? Damned right! I can only imagine how much dry teasing Joe has endured over the centuries. Because Nicky is just so raw and clever. You can never be entirely sure what he’s thinking, perhaps. Joe can read him like a book, but I think anyone else might be finding themselves looking a touch harder. Just in case.

I love Luca’s accent! I love how competent Nicky is! He loves Joe just as openly too, and I adore it??
