So I accidentally almost got into an argument on Twitter, and now I'm thinking about bad historical costuming tropes. Specifically, Action Hero Leather Pants.
See, I was light-heartedly pointing out the inaccuracies of the costumes in Black Sails, and someone came out of the woodwork to defend the show. The misunderstanding was that they thought I was dismissing the show just for its costumes, which I wasn't - I was simply pointing out that it can't entirely care about material history (meaning specifically physical objects/culture) if it treats its clothes like that.
But this person was slightly offended on behalf of their show - especially, quote, "And from a fan of OFMD, no less!" Which got me thinking - it's true! I can abide a lot more historical costuming inaccuracy from Our Flag than I can Black Sails or Vikings. And I don't think it's just because one has my blorbos in it. But really, when it comes down to it...
What is the difference between this and this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the thing. Leather pants in period dramas isn't new. You've got your Vikings, Tudors, Outlander, Pirates of the Caribbean, Once Upon a Time, Will, The Musketeers, even Shakespeare in Love - they love to shove people in leather and call it a day. But where does this come from?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously we have the modern connotations. Modern leather clothes developed in a few subcultures: cowboys drew on Native American clothing. (Allegedly. This is a little beyond my purview, I haven't seen any solid evidence, and it sounds like the kind of fact that people repeat a lot but is based on an assumption. I wouldn't know, though.) Leather was used in some WWI and II uniforms.
But the big boom came in the mid-C20th in motorcycle, punk/goth, and gay subcultures, all intertwined with each other and the above. Motorcyclists wear leather as practical protective gear, and it gets picked up by rock and punk artists as a symbol of counterculture, and transferred to movie designs. It gets wrapped up in gay and kink communities, with even more countercultural and taboo meanings. By the late C20th, leather has entered mainstream fashion, but it still carries those references to goths, punks, BDSM, and motorbike gangs, to James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Mick Jagger. This is whence we get our Spikes and Dave Listers in 1980s/90s media, bad boys and working-class punks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some of the above "historical" design choices clearly build on these meanings. William Shakespeare is dressed in a black leather doublet to evoke the swaggering bad boy artist heartthrob, probably down on his luck. So is Kit Marlowe.
But the associations get a little fuzzier after that. Hook, with his eyeliner and jewellery, sure. King Henry, yeah, I see it. It's hideously ahistorical, but sure. But what about Jamie and Will and Ragnar, in their browns and shabby, battle-ready chic? Well, here we get the other strain of Bad Period Drama Leather.
See, designers like to point to history, but it's just not true. Leather armour, especially in the western/European world, is very, very rare, and not just because it decays faster than metal. (Yes, even in ancient Greece/Rome, despite many articles claiming that as the start of the leather armour trend!) It simply wasn't used a lot, because it's frankly useless at defending the body compared to metal. Leather was used as a backing for some splint armour pieces, and for belts, sheathes, and buckles, but it simply wasn't worn like the costumes above. It's heavy, uncomfortable, and hard to repair - it's simply not practical for a garment when you have perfectly comfortable, insulating, and widely available linen, wool, and cotton!
As far as I can see, the real influence on leather in period dramas is fantasy. Fantasy media has proliferated the idea of leather armour as the lightweight choice for rangers, elves, and rogues, a natural, quiet, flexible material, less flashy or restrictive than metal. And it is cheaper for a costume department to make, and easier for an actor to wear on set. It's in Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, Runescape, and World of Warcraft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think this is how we get to characters like Ragnar and Vane. This idea of leather as practical gear and light armour, it's fantasy, but it has this lineage, behind which sits cowboy chaps and bomber/flight jackets. It's usually brown compared to the punk bad boy's black, less shiny, and more often piecemeal or decorated. In fact, there's a great distinction between the two Period Leather Modes within the same piece of media: Robin Hood (2006)! Compare the brooding, fascist-coded villain Guy of Gisborne with the shabby, bow-wielding, forest-dwelling Robin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, back to the original question: What's the difference between Charles Vane in Black Sails, and Edward Teach in Our Flag Means Death?
Simply put, it's intention. There is nothing intentional about Vane's leather in Black Sails. It's not the only leather in the show, and it only says what all shabby period leather says, relying on the same tropes as fantasy armour: he's a bad boy and a fighter in workaday leather, poor, flexible, and practical. None of these connotations are based in reality or history, and they've been done countless times before. It's boring design, neither historically accurate nor particularly creative, but much the same as all the other shabby chic fighters on our screens. He has a broad lineage in Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean and such, but that's it.
In Our Flag, however, the lineage is much, much more intentional. Ed is a direct homage to Mad Max, the costuming in which is both practical (Max is an ex-cop and road warrior), and draws on punk and kink designs to evoke a counterculture gone mad to the point of social breakdown, exploiting the thrill of the taboo to frighten and titillate the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In particular, Ed is styled after Max in the second movie, having lost his family, been badly injured, and watched the world turn into an apocalypse. He's a broken man, withdrawn, violent, and deliberately cutting himself off from others to avoid getting hurt again. The plot of Mad Max 2 is him learning to open up and help others, making himself vulnerable to more loss, but more human in the process.
Tumblr media
This ties directly into the themes of Our Flag - it's a deliberate intertext. Ed's emotional journey is also one from isolation and pain to vulnerability, community, and love. Mad Max (intentionally and unintentionally) explores themes of masculinity, violence, and power, while Max has become simplified in the popular imagination as a stoic, badass action hero rather than the more complex character he is, struggling with loss and humanity. Similarly, Our Flag explores masculinity, both textually (Stede is trying to build a less abusive pirate culture) and metatextually (the show champions complex, banal, and tender masculinities, especially when we're used to only seeing pirates in either gritty action movies or childish comedies).
Our Flag also draws on the specific countercultures of motorcycles, rockers, and gay/BDSM culture in its design and themes. Naturally, in such a queer show, one can't help but make the connection between leather pirates and leather daddies, and the design certainly nods at this, with its vests and studs. I always think about this guy, with his flat cap so reminiscient of gay leather fashions.
Tumblr media
More overtly, though, Blackbeard and his crew are styled as both violent gangsters and countercultural rockstars. They rove the seas like a bikie gang, free and violent, and are seen as icons, bad boys and celebrities. Other pirates revere Blackbeard and wish they could be on his crew, while civilians are awed by his reputation, desperate for juicy, gory details.
This isn't all of why I like the costuming in Our Flag Means Death (especially season 1). Stede's outfits are by no means accurate, but they're a lot more accurate than most pirate media, and they're bright and colourful, with accurate and delightful silks, lace, velvets, and brocades, and lovely, puffy skirts on his jackets. Many of the Revenge crew wear recognisable sailor's trousers, and practical but bright, varied gear that easily conveys personality and flair. There is a surprising dedication to little details, like changing Ed's trousers to fall-fronts for a historical feel, Izzy's puffy sleeves, the handmade fringe on Lucius's red jacket, or the increasing absurdity of navy uniform cuffs between Nigel and Chauncey.
A really big one is the fact that they don't shy away from historical footwear! In almost every example above, we see the period drama's obsession with putting men in skinny jeans and bucket-top boots, but not only does Stede wear his little red-heeled shoes with stockings, but most of his crew, and the ordinary people of Barbados, wear low boots or pumps, and even rough, masculine characters like Pete wear knee breeches and bright colours. It's inaccurate, but at least it's a new kind of inaccuracy, that builds much more on actual historical fashions, and eschews the shortcuts of other, grittier period dramas in favour of colour and personality.
But also. At least it fucking says something with its leather.

I want to see Kit with a full sleeve of tattoos and piercings, clad in a leather jacket and skinny jeans. His combat boots perpetually stain with Motor oil from working part-time at the repair shop after school.
Ty is a straight-A student, whit oversize sweaters and scuffed-up sneakers. His older brother is student council president and his twin sister is The head of the cheerleading team.
But every night, when nobody was watching they sneak out for a kiss.

Hiya I was wondering if you can do hc of Dazai and Chuuya with a fem! s/o who nit only works with them but also skateboards?
Tumblr media
I've never ridden a skateboard in my life and you can probably tell from these headcanons buuut I hope you enjoy them anyway~
Characters: Nakahara Chuuya, Dazai Osamu
Contents: gn!reader
Tumblr media
Dazai Osamu
Dazai thrives on information, so he naturally learns all there is to know about the people he’s interested in. It’s very hard to hide anything from him, so even if you decide not to disclose your hobby/sport/favourite form of transport to your colleagues at the Armed Detective Agency, Dazai’s going to find out about it anyway.
When he first meets you, he’ll notice how well-balanced you are and how good your spatial awareness is. This can come about from several things, but there’ll be more clues as he goes alone.
If he’s bored, he might just straight up follow you around one day. (Listen, it’s not creepy when Dazai does it, because it’s Dazai.) His suspicions are confirmed when you stroll into the local skate park and greet the other people there like you know them, like they’re your friends.
He doesn’t really seem to be into sports or much in the way of physical activity—just enough to keep himself fit and agile enough for the job—but he’ll happily lounge on a bench and watch, glancing up now and then from his favourite book.
That said, he might wheedle you into letting him have a go on your board. He wobbles at first, throwing out his hands to steady himself. It’s all an act, of course, since he’s a fully-trained martial artist, but he does always tend to clown around.
Dazai gets going, building up momentum as he rattles down the park pathway, building up speed—
It’s only then that you notice he’s heading directly for the railing that blocks off the river, a beatific smile on his face.
Splash.
Nakahara Chuuya
Koyou might have managed to turn Chuuya from a gutter punk into a well-dressed Mafia executive, but at heart he’s still that street rat kid who likes fast motorbikes and leather jackets. He still rides the bike Albatross gave him, though he only does it off-duty because he feels like he needs to hold up the dignity of being a Port Mafia executive.
Maybe you’re like him, and you only take your skateboard out when you’re off-duty and you don’t have to worry about the opinions of your colleagues in the Port Mafia. If you’ve got subordinates, you don’t want them gawking at you when you stack it and eat dirt—not that you aren’t skilled, but everyone falls on their face now and then.
How he finds out will depend on if he finds out before or after you start dating. If it’s before, then he likely noticed you had some kind of injury and that you were being cagey about it. Seeing a cast on your arm or a bandage taped to your face is enough to get him demanding answers. (It also reminds him of that idiot, Dazai, which also just feeds his temper.) People get hurt in the line of duty to the Mafia, but he’s already taken you under his wing, and he’s protective of his subordinates.
If it happens after you started dating, then he probably spotted your skating gear when he came over for the first time. If you’re really into your sport, you might have old, painted and sticker-strewn boards mounted on the wall, bits of repair kit lying around. A Sk8 the Infinity poster on the wall, who knows.
So, what does he think of it?
Well, I think you just found yourself a new skating buddy. Even if he wasn’t into it as a kid, he gets FOMO from watching you. His gravity control lets him master quite a few tricks very quickly, which can be a little annoying when you’ve been practising for god-knows-how-long to improve. However, he’ll make it up to you by using his gravity manipulation to let you skate around like the Silver Surfer. And you never have to worry about falling.
He’ll probably want to skate with you down by the river or somewhere industrial, rather than the local park. Those little baby half-pipes aren’t enough of a challenge.

#58: Echo [Overwatch 2]
Tumblr media
Always ready to learn!
This fun idea comes to us from a user by the name "deduqzaru". Today, we build the ultimate adaptoid. Echo, the creation of Doctor Liao - founding member of Overwatch - is a capable Damage hero, programmed with an advanced AI to fulfill variety of roles in combat and outside of it.
Next Time: Whosoever holds this hamm— NO! Not you! We're going back to the original!
Let's list the three main directives of this build:
Jill of All Trades: Echo was created with the goal of being able to fit into many situations, whether in combat or outside of it. In-game, her kit makes her a great scout, engager and damage-dealer.
I am Thou: Echo's Ultimate skill, "Duplicate" allows her to assume the form and copy the abilities of other characters on the battlefield.
Self-Sustainable: As a robot, Echo is unaffected by many statuses and effects that would affect humans: hunger, sleep, diseases, etc.
---
There were two options to start with Echo; one very obvious, the other - not so much... so I went with the obvious one and made her a Warforged. We get a +2 Constitution and +1 to one ability of our choice (Dexterity), 30 feet walking speed, and also immunity to being aged by magic. With Constructed Resilience, we gain several benefits to our fortitude:
Resistance to poison damage and an advantage on saving throws against being poisoned
We don't need to eat, drink or sleep
We are immune to diseases
We don't need to sleep, and magic cannot put us to sleep
Stemming from that last one, thanks to Sentry's Rest we can spend our long rest (shortened to a minimum of six hours) in a sort of energy-saving mode by remaining in a motionless (but still aware) state rather than unconscious sleep.
Tumblr media
Another set of benefits we're granted by our Integrated Protection. We gain a +1 to our AC and can integrate any armour we're proficient in into our own body (and it cannot be removed against our will). Finally, Specialised Design gives us one skill proficiency (Performance) and one tool proficiency (perhaps Tinker's Tools could help us heal/repair).
Because of her learning matrix, Echo holds a huge amount of information. We will make her a Sage, giving us proficiencies in Arcana and History, three languages of our choice, and the Researcher feature - whenever we must recall a piece of lore, we know exactly where to look for the relevant information (library, archive, people of interest, etc.)
ABILITY SCORES
We'll start with Dexterity to move around the battlefield and position ourselves to different roles. Constitution will be next, our body is made of quality materials. After that, we're taking Intelligence, as recording information is what we're all about.
Charisma will be next; we're an adaptoid who can also impersonate others, we need to be convincing. Wisdom is on the lower end, we're still learning after all. Finally, we're dumping Strength.
CLASS
I've had a few ideas here, depending on which race I was going to pick for Echo. In the end, I've decided on something interesting and went Rogue start-to-finish. Rogues get the d8 as their Hit Dice, [8 + our Constitution modifier] initial Hit Points, proficiencies with light armour, simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords, and thieves' tools. Let's give Echo a studded leather set and a hand crossbow (and maybe darts) to integrate into her body, the latter to represent her primary tri-shot attack. Our saving throws are Dexterity and Intelligence, and we get to pick four skills from the class list (Acrobatics, Deception, Insight, and Perception).
Level 1: We begin this build by gaining Expertise in two skills we're already proficient in, or one skill and thieves' tools. We can double our proficiency bonus for any checks we make using those skills. Let's apply that to Deception and Insight. We can also apply Sneak Attack to strikes that we make with advantage; once per turn, if we attack with an advantage (or our target is within 5 feet of another creature hostile to it), we can add extra 1d6 damage (the value changes as we level-up).
We also learn Thieves' Cant (can't what?), a series of special code phrases and symbols that is recognisable only to us and those who operate in the same circles as us (so, like... Python, C++, HTML, pick your poison) to decode or encode messages.
Tumblr media
Level 2: We can now use Cunning Action to take the Dash, Disengage, or Hide actions as bonus actions.
Level 3: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 2d6. We also pick our subclass, the Roguish Archetype. Since Echo needs several abilities that are similar to magic, despite my dislike of MagiTech, we will make her an Arcane Trickster. We gain Spellcasting, with Intelligence as our casting ability. We learn cantrips and a fixed number of regular spells. We gain the Mage Hand cantrips and two others of our choice (Light and Shocking Grasp) and three 1st-level spells: Disguise Self, Feather Fall, and Magic Missile. With those three, we have covered Echo's ultimate (to a degree), her passive ability to glide, and her primary tri-shot.
Additionally, with Mage Hand Legerdemain, we can make our Mage Hand invisible and use it to perform additional tasks (pickpocketing, using thieves' tools with it, etc.).
Level 4: Time for the first Ability Score Improvement, and we will use it to bump up our Dexterity by two points. We can also grab the Identify spell to access our vast database.
Level 5: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 3d6. We can now activate our extra jet boosters and make an Uncanny Dodge; doing so, we can use our reaction to halve the damage of an attack hitting us (if we can see it).
Level 6: We get an upgrade to our Expertise, by selecting two more skills that will benefit from the effect: let's choose History and Perception.
Level 7: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 4d6. We also unlock 2nd-level spells, so let's grab Aganazzar's Scorcher to replicate Echo's Focusing Beam ability.
Here, we also gain a very useful maneouvre ability: Evasion. When we are forced to make a Dexterity saving throw against an effect that would result in us taking half damage on a success (such as the Fireball spell), we instead take no damage. On a failure, we take half damage instead of full damage.
Level 8: Another ASI. We can cap our Dexterity to 20 for even better AC and Initiative bonus. To replicate Echo's Sticky Bombs ability, let's use the spell Snilloc's Snowball Swarm.
Tumblr media
Level 9: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 5d6. We gain a new subclass feature: Magic Ambush. If, while casting a spell, we are hidden from our target, the creature has a disadvantage if the spell requires them to make a saving throw.
Level 10: Halfway through the build and we get a new cantrip (Light) and another spell. Let's get Detect Thoughts to improve our impersonations. We also get another ASI; let's put two points into Constitution here.
Level 11: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 6d6. We now gain a Reliable Talent, which makes our proficient skills even more refined; whenever we make a skill check using a skill we're proficient in, we treat every roll of 9 and below as 10. We also get another spell; let's pick See Invisibility to upgrade our visual sensors.
Level 12: For this level's ASI, instead of increasing any traits, we're gonna pick a feat that furthers Echo's specialisation: with the Actor feat we get a +1 to our Charisma, an advantage on Deception and Performance checks used to impersonate another person, as well as the ability to mimic the speech and sound of another person or creature (if we hear them speaking for at least 1 minute).
Level 13: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 7d6. We also unlock another class feature; Versatile Trickster lets use use our invisible Mage Hand to distract a target within 5 feet of it as a bonus action. Doing so, gives us an advantage on attacks against that target until the end of the turn.
Additionally, we unlock 3rd-level spells and we can finally become the aerial support with Fly.
Level 14: At this level, we install some new update to our sensors and gain Blindsense. If we're able to hear, we are aware of the location of any hidden or invisible creature within 10 feet of us.
Tumblr media
For our next spell, we're going to grab Melf's Minute Meteors for some cover fire/carpet bombing.
Level 15: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 8d6 and our software gets some patches, because thanks to Slippery Mind we gain proficiency in Wisdom saving throws (and oh, we desperately need it).
Level 16: For another ASI, we can round up Charisma and Intelligence with one point each. We can also grab another spell, so let's disappear from the enemy's radar with Nondetection.
Level 17: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 9d6.
Time for our final subclass feature; Spell Thief allows us to hack the system and steal the knowledge of how to cast the spell from another once per long rest. Immediately after being targetted by a spell (or being in the area of one), we can use our reaction to force the caster to make a saving throw. On a failed save, the spell is cancelled and we steal the knowledge behind it. For the next 8 hours, we can cast the spell using our spell slots and the original caster cannot access that spell.
Level 18: We become the most Elusive target there is. If we aren't incapacitated, attacks against us cannot be made with an advantage.
Level 19: Our Sneak Attack bonus is now 10d6. With the final ASI of the build, we will cap our Constitution to a 20. We also unlock 4th-level spells for the endgame; let's take Locate Creature to be an even better pursuer.
Level 20: Our capstone is Rogue 20, which gives us Stroke of Luck. Once per short or long rest, we can turn a failed attack or ability check into a success. For the final spell of the build, let's grab Ice Storm and re-flavour it into carpet bombing.
Tumblr media
---
And that is Echo, carrying the spirit of one of the founders of Overwatch. Let's see what we came up with:
First of all, we have all the boxes of being the cutting edge automaton checked; we do not require food and water or sleep, we are immune to diseases, and can still keep watch even during stasis. We have good detection skills thanks to spells, mobility, and good Insight. Finally, we have also covered Echo's mimicking ability thanks to Disguise Self and proficiency in Deception and Performance.
Our AC is 18, wew have a +5 to our Initiative, and the average of 176 Hit Points.
Although we have hit two 20s in this build (Dexterity and Constitution), we don't have much in terms of other abilities. Our Strength modifier is still a negative, and our Wisdom is pretty low; even with proficiency in saving throws, it may be challenging to resist some crowd control effects. Sometimes, hackers might get the better of us.
---
Wow, it's been some time since I've typed the ending words. I enjoyed this one, the Overwatch characters have a really good potential to use in your D&D game; let me know if I should do more of those. It's good to do this again, and I saw that you guys wanted more gods, so I shall deliver.
I'll see you in the next one, darlings! - Nerdy out!

Something really quick about Eddie and reader fixing his ripped pants lol.
Word count: 836
Warnings: None really just fluff I guess, there’s no description of reader
You mindlessly walked down the hall to your 2nd period class before you were interrupted. “Hey, do you have a moment?” You jumped as you were snapped back to your surroundings. Eddie Munson stood in front of you, cheeks tinted a slight shade of pink.
You were momentarily in shock. Eddie never talked to you, well no one did actually. You were never bullied, but you were never popular either. You peacefully sat in your own purgatory, however your current high school experience proved quite lonely.
“Uh, sure? What’s up?” You asked genuinely curious as to why the Hellfire club leader was talking to you.
He leaned in, the close proximity causing your body to heat up. “I may have… ripped my pants.” He leaned back after telling you his predicament in a hushed tone.
“And I see you sewing stuff at lunch sometimes so I thought you’d be able to help me!” He was using his usual tone again.
You grabbed his hand to take him to the bench in the middle of the woods. “So does this mean you’ll help?!” He asked, completely bewildered at what was happening. You wordlessly nodded. “I’m just taking you somewhere less… populated.”
Once at your destination you let go of Eddie’s hand. “Can you show me the rip?” You asked. While putting your bag on the wooden table and retrieving your sewing kit. Always keeping it on you to repair a popped button or if you ripped your own pants, it was always better to be prepared was your reasoning.
He turned around and untied the leather jacket from his waist. Before he pulled it away he asked you to not laugh, once the leather jacket was no longer obstructing your view you saw it, a two inch rip near the center back seam of his black Lee jeans. It wasn’t as bad as you were anticipating but you were aware of the metalhead’s lively actions and any wrong move could cause his underwear to show and make the tear much worse.
“So, Whaddya say doc? Am I gonna make it?”
“You’re really dramatic you know that?” You stated matter of factly. Eddie let out an over exaggerated gasp in response. “I thought your entire ass was on display for all of Hawkins, but it’s nothing I can’t fix.” He was on his knees in front of you within seconds, your left hand encased in his large calloused hands. “You’re a lifesaver! I owe you big time!”
You heated up again at his dramatic display even though no one was around to see it. It was probably due to your small infatuation with him, but you were embarrassed nonetheless.
“Okay, okay. Get up before your jeans start ripping from the seams.” Retracting your hand from his grasp you went to your sewing kit and retrieved a needle and black thread. “This is gonna sound super weird but I need you to take off your pants, y’know, so I can fix them.” You said while your back was turned.
Seconds later you heard the shifting of clothes and Eddie’s pants were placed on the bench table. You sat down and quickly got to work.
While stitching up the pair of pants Eddie sat on the bench opposite you with his jacket over his lap for modesty. You made quick work of the pants while he watched you.
“You’re so cool.”
Your face heated up at the compliment. Quickly shaking your head you swatted the air, needle held tight between your pointer and thumb. “No, no. It’s not that serious.”
“Yes it is! You just saved me like 15 bucks!”
You smiled and shook your head. “If you say so.” Finishing up your last stitch you tied off a few knots. After pulling the pants apart to test their durability you cut the remaining thread with a small pair of scissors. Eddie looked in awe at them. You looked up at him and smiled once more. He was cute, kind of like an excited puppy.
Once finished you held Eddie’s jeans back to him. He gave you a broad smile, “You’re really the best!” He took the jeans and started redressing himself.
Silently you put your sewing kit back together and shoved it in your bag, but before you could leave Eddie spoke up. “Hey! Why don’t you sit at my table today?” You turned around to Eddie, who was now dressed as normal. “Thanks, but it’s fine. I don’t even know how to play Dungeons and Dragons.” You smiled before turning around.
“I can teach you! I mean… we can teach you!” You turned around once more with a raised eyebrow. “You can teach me?” Eddie’s face turned a bright pink. “Y-yeah! If you want! No pressure or anything.” You leaned on a tree and crossed your arms.
You tried hard to contain a smile. “I’ll think about it, Eddie.” You turned and made your way back to school. You bit your lip to make your smile less obvious.

hi i just found your blog and i think your world is super interesting and cool! i think i remember reading about the cats crafting things like weapons and art, if you wanted to talk about the specifics (like what kind of weapons/how they work, what types of art/what’s popular or anything else!) i’d love to read it :O
oh boy okay i once in a feverous haze researched everything to do with paleolithic items and tool making so allow me to infodump
Knives are like. The Thing in the Valley and have been for generations. These range from hafted knives, to hand axes (Achuleans), to FULL axes. Paleolithic knives were notably used as multitools, and the same goes for these guys; cutting wood, plants, starting fires (if flint), butchering meat, preparing medicines, pastes. A cat's knife is used for basically everything--except killing other cats, because that's illegal.
Then you've got personal affects. Jewelry is big (I just hate drawing it), carved statuettes, collected feathers, stuffed toys, stones, flutes, dolls, balls teeth, shells, crystals, rattles.
When you have fur, clothes aren't as common, but decorative leather and textile are both worn, and belts are pretty standard across most cultures as a place to put stuff when moving around on all fours.
If there's available rock, it most likely has paint on it. The cats love nothing more than to paint and repaint rock faces. Cave systems in the area have also been adorned with paints.
One of the most common ways to depict Hiverne in art is as a sunbeast (sauropod looking ass) with a bright star in place of the head.
Fun fact: the rock in the Valley is very dark, so the most common dyes for painting are white.
Other useful items, like leather bags, baskets, paint and dye kits, paintbrushes, sewing needles, leatherworking tools, are pretty common as well.
Items of importance are often passed on, maintained and repaired across generations.
There is a system of trade in the area. Outsiders are allowed to participate in Tradings on moonless nights, and bartering goes on.

what about bea unable to even touch a stencil, paintbrush, sketching pencil after shannon loses the halo. shannon noticing but not saying anything, sneaking sideways looks, flipping through the old works she made with bea side by side.
when bea finally opens a tube of paint again the smell of it immediately results in her breaking down
why must you hurt me like this
Shannon herself slow to get back into art, her hands so vividly remembering shaping the wraiths she's no longer cursed to see, holding her brushes and remembering lazy afternoons with Bea in meditative silence cleaning their travel painting kits and the look of focus on Bea's face as she worked grime out of her rubber erasers, the same look Shannon sees now when she's repairing the leather of the cruciform sword's grip, tip of her tongue poked out as she carefully aligns the wrapping. Mary taking her for sunrise after sunrise in the faint hope that it might stir her to creativity
Bea coming home from Ronda and heading for the journal, her eyes catching on the stack of art gear that's been sitting untouched in the corner of the hidden room since she took ownership of the bearer's quarters. finding a scrap of paper tucked in there that she'd forgotten about, a little doodle shannon had passed to her once of a hand roll with arms and legs, a tiny sword in one hand and the halo in its back, a little speech bubble saying "no more mister rice guy" arcing up from it's mouth
rubbing her thumb across the bristles of one of her brushes, cracking open a tiny wooden travel palette, the paint still wet in the wells, tears pooling in her eyes with how clearly she can remember that last afternoon, only a handful of days before her eighteenth.

My experience at Bay Area Kei
So, despite wearing lolita fashion for over a decade now, I attended my first in-person lolita event this weekend.
I didn't get to experience the main event, because instead I went to work, but I did do the swap meet and the tea party.
I want to explain that the event was well-run and that a lot of my weird experiences is based on my personal life and the fact that I'm a weird person.
So, night 1 was the swap meet.
I had self-control and bought four blouses instead of buying more main pieces and not having pieces to coordinate with them. I may or may not have had the problem of buying main pieces with no support for...like...over a decade. So I'm proud of me for not doing that.
And then I had this conversation with this poor seller:
"Wait, are those Bodyline tea party shoes actually $5?"
"Yeah, they're pretty worn."
"Oh, but they've still got life in them, and they're my size."
@trickstercheshi, who was with me: "Tell her what happened to your last Bodyline tea parties."
This poor seller, who had no idea where this is going: "Oh, what happened."
"Okay. So. I got them in 2011, and they were my only lolita shoes. So I wore them a lot. Eventually, one of the toes blew out, so I fixed it with medical tape and shoe goo."
"Shoe goo is amazing."
"I love shoe goo. So. Then after that, the toe blew out again, so I fixed it with a couch repair kit. And then the sole broke, so I had to get some leather to fix the bottom, so there was this couch by the side of the road--"
The seller, who was definitely not expecting this to take the roadkill couch turn: "uh huh?"
"And I knew no one was coming from it, so I took leather from the back and used that for the new soles, and then I painted them gold, but at that point I couldn't really stand right in them because they were too thin on the bottom."
"Yes?"
"So then I retired them."
The seller, who is so happy to be at the end of this story: "Wow."
"And then I turned them into roller skates."
.
Okay, it's late, so the rest of thsi will be told tomorrow.

Q: 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄'𝐒 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 . RULES ( … ) List the things your muse carries in their pockets or bags in their everyday life. ( optional … explain their significance. ) repost, don’t reblog.

GIFTED STONE. / BRACELET. ◈ Jayce will never be seen without his trademark bracelet clasped around his wrist. Eventually, he designs a few new ways he can safely wear it, especially when he departs to go into another fight head on. His wrist, as much as he's grown accustomed to having it there, isn't the best place when people know his hands, the things he uses to hold onto his weapon, are. He's learned his lesson when someone tried to take a swing at his wrist to disarm him once, so he switches it out to a small pendant carrier tucked safely under his body armour. Poor decision, possibly, but he'd rather it be safe, then risk it shattering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LEATHER TOOL ROLL. / REPAIR KIT. ◈ Ever the repairman & tinkerer, Jayce will also never not have a small leather roll of portable tools on hand. Granted he usually spends most of his time inside his labs or forge anyways, it feels strange to not have them in his hands in some way, just in case something comes up. Usually, it contains wrenches, screwdrivers, spare gears or parts, pliers, & other interchangeable tools. Works well for him because of the compact size, & it's not too hefty or weighted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JOURNAL. / LEATHER BOUND BOOK & PENS. ◈ His mind is always going, always thinking, & when he's out & about, new ideas could strike at random. A habit developed when he was young, he's grown used to carrying a small pocket journal around, tucked away neatly, but proudly decorated & customized with the symbol of his house - each one he carries, he makes sure to fill & organize ( despite the disorganized appearance, everything has a place to him, a system that works. ). They're well loved, torn pages, dog-eared edges, little notes & doodles jotted down & pieced in between his own ramblings. He uses them to keep his thoughts together, logged away to peruse at a later date.
Tumblr media
COLLAPSABLE MERCURY “HAMMER”. ◈ A prototype — still a work in progress he's hammering out the roughened edges on. Overall, something he can carry with him on the go, much more lightweight & compact, but not nearly as powerful nor destructive as his original, more of a baton than anything at the moment. Development on it was started shortly after the attack on the council room, defense being the primary goal in mind as he worked on it's creation, a device he can use in a pinch if he's ever caught in another situation where he needs to fight or defend himself. It does have the ability to launch weakened but still damaging versions of the attacks his Mercury Hammer can, but they're again, not nearly as strong nor destructive. More meant to stun.
