Ahsoka's Lekku Guidelines by Killian Plunkett
Top of head bone covered with skin
Around eyes is end of "bone"
Rear lekku 1/2 the flexibility of front lekku
Flexible to tip
General guidelines for Ahsoka's "head tails", also called "lekku"
Generally her head is "flesh", but down to the eyeline it is like a larger division of her skull
Below eyeline the "tails" are flexible like thick rubber, with the front 2 more flexible than the rear
General range: red = most extreme, green/blue = common
When in relaxed position, back lekku does not act on spine

Aro's lek was nearly severed by a shrapnel blast when a tank exploded next to him during a battle on Ryloth. Worst injury he ever received during the clone wars. Tore deep into the muscle.
It causes quite a bit of long term damage, leaving him with limited mobility. He ends up wearing a compression wrap for the remainder of the war as his lekku heals. But as Aro is very expressive with his lekku, and through much physical therapy, he is able to regain about 85% mobility over the following years. Still the area around the scar has a strange feeling, he gets nerve jolts and spasms on occasion.

Characters with lekku, montrals, horns, or any other sort of head protrusion sleep in the weirdest most concerning ways and you canNOT convince me otherwise.
Anakin has lost count of the amount of times he has walked in on Ahsoka face down, completely smothered into the pillow/floor/mat/bedroll and her ass up in the air for NO REASON AT ALL. Arm slung over her head and it can NOT be comfortable. Or face down like she just splat into concrete from 10 stories up and she HAS to be dead!?
So he wakes her up in a frantic haste, panicking more and more as he can't rouse her.
He calls kix and flips her over and he's kriff near starting chest compression or something when Ahsoka blearily asks, "Sk- Skyguy? Whatcha doin?"
And he throws his arms around her scolding her, holding her tight, muttering "dont ever scare me like that again!!"
And she mumbles okay
It happens again a week later.
He and the other regulars get used to it. But every so often a shiny will stumble upon Ahsoka sleeping like the dead and runs over panicking, calling for help. Obi-Wan or Anakin or Rex will go over and check on her. 'Check' meaning calling out her name, or random things to see what she might respond to this time, and look for any movement or noise. If she huffs, great. If she flips them off, even better.
They have a running tally of how many times they get flipped off, what the weirdest thing she has responded to is, who has gotten the angriest response, and every time they think she's *actually* dead.
It's a fun game. Especially when other Masters and Padawans and Clones join. Even better when someone else with lekku joins and sleeps in a concerning way.
Record so far is Master Ti, Master Secura, and Ahsoka all sleeping completely face down, non breathing, flipping them off when they checked on them. Jesse is so happy he snapped a holopic of it. He trades rations for copies of it. At least until Anakin confiscates it. (And shares it with the Jedi.)
This has been inspired by my weird ass sleeping positions and sleep demon doing weird things when i wake up. Enjoy! (Feel free to add images or examples. I tried finding some gifs but tumblr is as functional as ever :))))))) ) 🧡🤍💙

*clears throat* I can recognize that having Ahsoka's lekku/montrals be the correct length in a live-action show is perhaps not physically feasible whilst also being disappointed that she still has the adolescent-length lekku/montrals instead of the long, glorious, wise old lady lekku/montrals she should have

Let's Talk About Lekku
Do you ever think about twi'lek neck strain?
Do you think twis with higher-set lekku are considered prettier, but also find it a pain in the ass, like having a large chest in humans?
Do you ever think about voluntary partial lekku amputations?
(Check out this post, I like it muchly and it is why I subscribe to the lekku placement thing.)
Anyway, I saw this gif of Hera and got to thinking, with how tense she is, what the weight of her lekku might be doing to her.
Tumblr media
Anyway, here's a bunch of thoughts:
Per @atagotiak (Tia) when I brought this up on discord:
They’ve probably evolved stronger neck muscles than humans. But then that doesn’t mean that neck strain isn’t a problem. Our own bodies are def inadequate sometimes Like the boob thing you mentioned Imagine being a Jedi or even worse, a non-sensitive athlete or something Twilek head-wrap debates. The ones with better necks and/or smalller/better positioned lekku think the restrictive ones are a pain and sometimes describe them the way we describe bras or corsets. The ones with more issues are like “no I need them” but also like taking them off at the end of the day. Also, if they are more restrictive, improperly fitted ones probably are torture Leaning into the bra analogy a lot here
Per @ioudaleks (Jade):
Headaches, probably too, esp if you’re moving a lot Or a more decorative head thingy rather than a more functional one Could be close to an overly tight hairstyle too Or a heavy or elaborate one. Speaking as a person with long hair and a fondness for updos
There's a very good reason Bib Fortuna wraps his lekku around his shoulders like a scarf.
Really 'conservative' Twi'leks wear like... a sack that hangs from the shoulders that their lekku can sit in, like a Renaissance era snood, but it hangs from the shoulders instead of the head, to support the weight.
Tia:
Hey, if higher tails are feminine do you think people push theirs higher/lower, even to an extent that maybe hurts a bit?
As mentioned, I stole the placement headcanon from a tumblr post, but yes, that sounds plausible.
Some very unpleasant communities (namely slave owners) insist on young girls wearing harnesses that yank them higher so they grow unnaturally high. IRL parallel would be waist training from prepubescence, or foot binding.
People with longer lekku definitely wear them over the shoulder sometimes, just going off of my experiences wearing a longer ponytail fall that starts from a similarly high part of the skull.
Dudes with four lekku are considered very macho and attractive but they have to deal with the worst strain and end up with just. Massive neck muscles.
Also I keep thinking about the thing I once heard about how the Megara character actors at Disney World all have chiropractors on Disney's dime because of how heavy the wig is
Jade:
Crisscross to opposite shoulders to keep them out of the way Horrible hypothetical Discourse idea: high pigtails are twi’lek cultural appropriation Especially if you wear it with a headband
Tia:
I imagine most twi’lek wouldn’t actually care, hair isn’t like lekku at all, but there’d be furious debate all the same. Braids are worse.
This is where I start thinking about lekku amputations like breast reductions. So much weight hecking up the spine that it's easier to just. Cut off the surplus, excess tissue. It does impact their ability to communicate, since so much of Ryl involves lekku language, so it's not a decision anyone makes lightly.
The doctors are all incredibly trained because if you cut too high you endanger brain tissue.
There are generally several feet of sensory lekku tissue before reaching the brainy bits, but the risk of infection is a nightmare.
I think those who get lekku reduction have like. Specialty accessories? Lightweight caps with tassels so the visual effect is still somewhat there, but the weight is gone.
Tia:
Having fun with gender presentation in general. Femmes embracing low lekku, butches rocking high lekku. Defiance re: what your role should be.
Not twi’leks but oh boy some togruta ladies have absurdly long lekku
Thankfully, theirs start from significantly lower on the head, and rest heavily on the shoulders and back.

Okay so though about something while in class. I noticed that Hera’s lekku is similar to the world between worlds art work and or Star maps.
Eleni Syndulla’s lekku look similar to the cave paintings on lothal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s my original post 👆
Edit: this could be how the force brought them together, since her lekku markings look similar to the cave paintings and Star maps, Twi’lek are born with the markings ( I tried finding my source for this but I couldn’t find it sorry) so maybe it’s a coincidence but I’m not really sure because they just look so similar. It’s crazy. Kanan said they were always drawn to Lothal and Hera asks him if he thinks they were meant to be there and to meet Ezra and Her lekku just look so freaking similar to those cave paintings, and the stuff from the Jedi temple.
Honestly at this point though I’m just rambling 😕
Edit 2: also if you look at a map of capital city ( lothal) it once again looks similar! ( episode vision of hope, you see the map in Kallus’s office)
Edit3: Twi'leks develop unique markings on the lekku at the onset of puberty. This pattern of marks is unique to every individual Twi'lek and it changes with age. It is believed that the Twi'lek markings are a way to differentiate and recognize one another. the patterns on the Twi'lek have long been considered a sign of wealth and social class. It is believed that the marks are indicative of a higher social rank. In addition to this the patterns on the lekku can also tell a lot about the individual. Such as status, clan affiliation and even political views.
( source is ai, since I couldn’t find where I previously found said information, but this is what I was talking about in the other part)

I do not get on Star Wars much but I'm adding my own two cents to this. The way I correct Ahsoka's montrals and lekku length problem plot hole is by world building and just saying she's physically stunted. She was in war as a child so she had to do more physical activity then what was healthy for her. Same thing happens with gymnasts, if they practiced since they were a child they end up stunting their growth and end up staying short. Montrals and lekku would probably be hurt in the battles and constantly throwing her body around without rest. Her body was focused on healing, no growing.
"But Ahsoka's tall!" you may say.
Well, her head problem may be malnourishment. She basically lived on a warship that most likely only had rations for humans. The rations for humans may have the correct things for her body but not her montrals and lekku as they are built differently than the rest of her body. Most likely her species' diet was not taken into account or it was ignored as she wasn't human in a society dominated by humans.
No, she couldn't receive the nutrients later and grow her montrals and lekku the correct length that's not how biology works. If a child doesn't get the right nutrients, especially during childhood or puberty, they won't grow right. What causes kids to grow will usually only be released at certain points in time, like childhood and puberty, and not be released at any other time.
"They grow throughout her life!"
And it is possible what makes her montrals and lekku grow may have been damaged. We see that comparing young togruta and older togruta their montrals and lekku lengthen noticeable in their teen years. As such, we can assume that this is the real start of growth that will continue for the rest of their life. This is similar to how you already have head hair but body hair grows around puberty and won't stop growing for the rest of your life unless you get a disease that makes it stop growing. Or just so old your body dies on you.
Because that starting point of growth is damaged with from battle wounds and/or malnourishment it still means Ahsoka's montrals and lekku probably won't grow correctly, leaving her with short ones for her age for the rest of her life. They may even grow the wrong shape from the damage.
If you compared Ahsoka to Shaak Ti just remember Shaak Ti grew up in peace time and most likely was nourished properly according to the Togruta diet. Shaak Ti had a healthy life style and her montrals and lekku would grow correctly for the rest of her life unless she received an injury that somehow permanently damaged them in some way.
If I remember correctly there was the release of an official answer about why Ahsoka's montrals and lekku were so wonky. They were really trying to cover the differences instead of giving an actual explanation besides "that's just how it grows".
And before you go asking about the force fixing it, don't even try. Not even canon knows anything about it and this is a headcanon thing from someone who only dabbles in the Star Wars fandom from time to time. To me I would rather have this interesting world building explanation to fix a continuity inconsistency over leaving it be or just slapping the force over it to fix it.
Again, casual enjoyer, I don't know if the fandom has already come up with this or another explanation. Just tired of people constantly arguing about it and here's my two cents on how to basically ignore that to simply focus on watching the show.

mark 1 and mark 2 at trying to loom knit twilek lekku. 2nd (blue) definitely turned out better than the first
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Used 3 layers/strings of yarn for the pink one and only one for the blue, so the pink is definitely more... rigid, than the blue one. Neither are particularly heavy, though.
Also, I didn't quite think the blue one through and when wearing it, it goes down to my ankles. Gotta be careful not the let it catch anything...

Lekku are used to communicate in among Twi’lek’s, with majority coming from lekku movement often times being subconscious, and Aro is very expressive with his lekku.
During their time together in the war, Nite gets good at reading him. Nite can predict sudden events by just watching Aro’s body and lekku language (and often time before Aro himself realizes). Nite notices Aro’s lekku flicking and knows someone’s about to die. “Why does the force only speak to me though my head tails?!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aro will often poke Nite in the back as well. The first time actually shocks Nite. And naturally, Aro and Nite have those 3 am talks about what it’s like to have lekku vs hair.

I need to talk about Ahsoka's lekku and montrals in the series. At the beginning, when she appeared in "The Mandalorian," I was very skeptical, especially about the montrals, which are very different from their animated counterparts in both "Rebels" and "Clone Wars." But the more I watch Ahsoka's episodes, the more I like them.
Look at the curve at the top of the lekku that rests on her shoulders. So clean and delicate, like it was painted by a renaissence master.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or the indentation between the tips of the montrals. I’ve always loved this detail since the CW animation.
Tumblr media
And can we talk about the lekku that starts from the back of her head? When I look at her from the side, I can only think "poetry." The curves are harmonious and elegant, and I love how every part seems cohesive with the rest but at the same time defined as if it were actual flesh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and the detail of the ridge along the length of the front lekkus? Like the section is a kind of rounded triangle. So beautiful fuck I wanna touch them 😭 And the texture of the skin, not just the stripes that adorn them, but the small bumps and wrinkles all over the surface. And for the love of god I will never stop talking about the texture they managed to create. The lekku don't bounce around when she moves, as if they were made of rubber; they really seem like skin and flesh. It's these little details that make it all extremely realistic and make me go feral
Tumblr media
I must say I'm still a bit puzzled by the shape of her montrals, which in my opinion, remain too flattened backward. They look cool from the side, but unfortunately, when you see them from the front view, they almost seem to disappear, and I'm not crazy about that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the visibility of the curve were the same as when Ahsoka slightly tilts her head forward, it would be truly perfect.
In general, I love it, and this show is driving me crazy, but I accept it.
Tumblr media
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
