This is NOT exactly "what's the word count question." I know how you love those. BUT I'm a newbie and hoping you can explain this to me: Why does MG fantasy have a higher word count range than realistic? (I got the numbers from your chart). Do agents "expect" this or can an author write what they write and if a their fantasy novel comes in at the same word count as a realistic, would that even matter to them?
Nothing "has to be" anything. Like, who cares, tbh. Not me, that's for sure! The word count chart is just basically what is in the realm of normal, the range that many/most books in that category fall into. So if you are ANYWHERE WITHIN SHOUTING DISTANCE OF NORMAL, you're perfectly fine.
Fantasy books, in general, tend to be longer than realistic books. That's across all age categories. Fantasy adult novels tend to be longer than realistic adult novels. Same with YA. Same with MG. I don't know why. I guess because Fantasy stories need more room for world-building. We already know the rules of the world we live in, so realistic books don't have to like, set up a magic system, or explain all the different kinds of ORCS, or whatever.
That doesn't mean fantasies have to be longer. Just that they tend to be longer. You'll notice, I hope, that the ranges are quite large, and there is a lot of crossover between the ranges -- either a realistic OR a fantasy MG could be 35k words, or 40k, or 50k, or 60k.... it's highly likely that MOST MG would fall on the somewhat lower end of that spectrum, maybe a little under, while MOST fantasy MG would fall on the higher end of that spectrum, or a little over, but it truly does not matter at all if yours doesn't, as long as it is a fully-fleshed out and terrific story, and is the normal length of a book -- which there is a VERY VERY WIDE RANGE of what that can be.

Fanfic Length Question
Just curious what it's like here: how long are the fanfics you prefer to read? And if you feel like reblogging maybe put in tags what it usually is?

let's get it startedddd
I feel like that first number is wrong since the majority of the fic was finished before New Year's, but also I was up until 5 am editing, so I've decided not to care.
Like I've mentioned before, my main writing goal for this year is to edit my Jonah retelling into a short novel, which is about 40k at the lowest end. I think 50k would be safer, but this is also literary fiction, so sometimes you can get away with being shorter because Art TM. I dunno. I'm gonna make 40k the goal for right now and then we'll see what happens.
My first real novel attempt ended up being about 60k, I believe, despite being genuinely completely unusable. So I know I can get to that length -- just a matter of making sure it's not just wasted space.

5 / 26 / 31 (lmao) / 38 / 46
pls tell us <3
djdjd so many! okay lesssgoo
answered 5. here (for PSCU but you didn't specify so i'm assuming)
26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?
oooh i think definitely one that had no dialogue. i'm already getting anxious when i write fics normally and i feel like there's too much dialogue and i think you can convey a lot more without spoken words
31. What’s your ideal fic length to write?
skkskss contrary to popular belief i think the ideal fic length i like to write is somewhere around 40k - 60k (i've never achieved 60k but i would really like to try one day)
38. Did any of your fics get surprisingly popular (whatever that means to you)? Which ones? Why do you think they were so successful?
okay i mean the obvious answer is going to be prince simon. so i'm NOT going to say that lolol i'm super excited how much love not if it's you is getting, i've gotten attached to this story (and jakob!!!) so quickly, and i'm so happy y'all did too - i think it's successful bc it's very cute and light-hearted and jakob is adorable and also maybe the quick updates? another story that always gets lots of love is one hundred and seventeen that resonates a lot with people for the gender aspect of it i think??
46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?
absolutely my laptop, hatehatehate doing it on my phone bc that means i'd have to do it on google docs where i feel hella watched even when none of my betas are actually in the doc lolol idk it's just a weird thing that i have. i think my writing is only affected by where i am in so far that if i am in public i get super self-conscious and if i am not 100% sure no one can look over my shoulder i give it up pretty quickly again

the thrilling part of writing is just how often you are wrong about your estimate for the length of a story. every single time I settle on an idea I lie to myself. "nothing too big," I say. "maybe ten thousand words?" I say.
my current prediction is 67k words, if my chapters remain roughly the same length. i can guarantee they will not.
the last time i made a prediction like this, I estimated Aftershocks at 40k... then 60k... and it ended at 80k.
I'm scared

2022 fic year in review
Total number of completed works: 12
Total word count: 222,173
Fandoms written in: Marvel (Daredevil, Punisher, and Black Widow both MCU and comics, mostly MCU and comics fusion), DCU comics (Deathstroke and Nightwing + adjacent bats and birds) and Peacemaker (HBO series)
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?  I figured I would write a little less than what I did in 2021 because I got kinda burnt out by the end of the year. I wrote about 60k less, so I think that’s about what I expected.
What’s your own favorite story of the year?  A toss-up between mapped out and blind date, they were both really fun to write.
Did you take any writing risks this year?  I signed up for two bangs and one exchange, so there’s always the risk I won’t finish in time. (I didn’t for one bang and the exchange, but got everything posted a couple weeks late.)
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?  Yes, I have three sladick fics I want to write for sure: a fantasy/royalty AU, one where Slade keeps restraining Dick and accidentally gives him a bondage kink, and one that’s a time-travel Blüdhaven fix-it fic (but not in the way you think). I also have tentative plans to write chapter twos or part twos for some of the sladick fics I did last year. I’ve had a Leota/Keeya (from Peacemaker) idea bouncing around in my head for awhile (featuring Adrian committing chaos in the background), so I will try to get that out by February because I like to do femslash February. And I got 15k into an obikin fic I had to set aside due to other fandom events that I would like to finish by the end of the year. Fratt is on a bit of a backburner for me, but I do still have ideas and would participate in fratt weeks and DDE if that gets scheduled. Basically, I will still be on my bullshit.
Most popular story of the year? By kudos, it’s scientifically sound, with muscle memory as a close second.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: wolves and girls for sure. It’s a nearly 40k fic for a pairing (natelektra) with 15 works on AO3, one of which is the art post for this fic--I used it for the Marvel bang. I didn’t expect it to get much traction, but by god this pairing deserved at least one bang-length fic, and if I cannot find it, I will create it!
Most fun story to write:  Maybe scientifically sound? It was 2k and I wrote it in one sitting, which was a first for me, as it’s usually a struggle to keep any of my ideas under 10k. I also had fun writing all the sladick fics I did for the sladerobin weekend/mini event back in April--I had a bit of time off, so I was able to crank those out much faster than usual. (Those are mapped out, a pound of flesh, and one for the road.)
Most unintentionally telling story: Tbh it’s probably wolves and girls for the same reason it was the better half last year. I again romanticized the ability to travel and spent an inordinate amount of time describing the scenery.
Biggest disappointment: Lack of time, more than anything. Real life kicked my ass this year, and I didn’t (and never do) get as much writing done as I wanted. I also really wanted to finish that obikin fic before I started my next one, but that didn’t happen, and it is now languishing in WIP land.
Biggest surprise: Going feral over obikin like I’m in middle school again.
My favorite part of fandom this year: I always like working with artists for bangs and events, and @flamebird-j created a lovely piece for muscle memory. I also met some cool people through the DC fandom and read just enough comics to appreciate the excellent shitposting potential of batfam shenanigans.
Tagging: anyone who wants to do it 💕

The funny thing about writing is that goals change over time.
When I first began writing Ikigai, my goal was to write a novel-length fic for aiyuu, which was about 40k words.
However, as I approached the halfway mark, I realized that I was already almost to my goal, so I upped the goal to 60k words. Then it became 70k, and as I approached my final chapters, I thought to myself:
"Hmm. Can I outstretch this to 80k words?"
So my goal became to make Ikigai 80k words, and I managed to surpass my goal, even if not even by half of a thousand. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, even if my focus was all over the place.
The fic went from "Can I make a novel?" to "I'm making a whole adult fiction length book!".
It was a lot of effort, and lots of times I just wanted to stop writing because I was so tired, but I'm happy I pushed through with everyone's support!! 💜
So thank you all who supported me and this fic of mine throughout the chapters!

12 and 17. love your work btw! :)
Thank you so much!! 💜
12: How many WIPs do you have in your docs for next year?
In terms of what I hope to get posted in 2023, that's gonna be 4, all AOS AU's. Three of them look like they'll be around the length of 'A Weary Traveller', somewhere in the 20k to 40k range, though one of them may be closer to 60k.
The fourth is gonna be another mega-fic (or chonky monster (affectionate)) as my lovely beta on KAYE, @pkrosche likes to call it 💜 I'd say I'm about...60 percent through it, and it's just passed 240k words. Would not be surprised if it ends up similar in length to Know All Your Enemies. This one I'm going to do my best to get out this year over anything else.
I actually also have a Daredevil (Netflix) fic I've been working on of similar length, a post-Defenders AU which I'd also like to get out this year, but that's very much up in the air. Like KAYE and my current Star Trek mega-WIP, it's full of plot and conspiracies and the like, and that one has a big cast of core characters (I've got everyone from the Defenders to the Avengers involved lol), so there's a lot of rewriting again and again to make sure it all actually fits together and makes sense.
17: Your favorite character to write this year?
If I include the Daredevil WIP, then I have two.
As far as Star Trek, I'd have to say Bones, both for KAYE and the WIP. I do love Jim very much, and the WIP mostly centers around him like KAYE did, but writing Bones is just so much fun. And there's such a great complexity to writing him, too - trying to get his voice down and his friendship with Jim and how he can be so gruff on the surface but also feels so much, so deeply. Second runner up would be Jim, and then after him probably Pike, both for the WIP and for KAYE and Weary Traveller. We get Pike from Academy years to the present in the WIP so I got to have a lot of fun with him and showing character development. Also, AOS Dadmiral Pike has my heart ❤️
As for the Daredevil fic, it's Spiderman (MCU), especially his internal thoughts when it comes to Matt and the friendship they develop. So many fun rambles. So many feelings. There are a few scenes of the two of them where I cry every time I read over them lol.
Apologies for such a long answer, and thank you so much for the ask and lovely complement!

Chapter and Current Word Count; Take Three
Chapter 12 is finished and I am currently working on Chapter 13. Current word count is 43.5k. I have been researching word count a bit since I keep bringing it up in this blog. 40k word count seems to be accepted as the bare minimum for YA Novels and I linked a post that I used for reference, down below. Ideally, something within the YA genre, should not be epica length (eg LOTR) nor for the purpose of being a first time author. While I am obviously nowhere near the length of 120k+ words nor will I reach that with my first or even second book, information is important. So, from what I gathered, it looks like I should aim somewhere between 50k to 90k; with my range most likely to end up around 60k to 70k. This is probably fine as there is less risk in printing for shorter works although, my rough estimate at the beginning was on the higher end of 90k by final draft and that too can be seen as alright due to world building elements especially within a fantasy/sci-fi setting. Considering where I am now, book will be done for Winter 2024 for sure and I will see how far I get it in terms of publishing.
Regarding recent silence on my end, I ended up getting pretty badly sick during tail end of November and had to go to the hospital which resulted in me picking up an infection from my stay; neat! I am just finally getting over the worse of it and starting to be able to write again. Not a fan of hospitals but it is what it is, and I am just happy I can start working on my book even though this resulted in about three weeks worth of setbacks. I posted about one of the other main characters in my story, Ryan Phoenix, and will be posting about the final character in the trio sometime this weekend. Expect another one or two post from me; I have some baking that I need to get done for the upcoming season and I have been playing some Splatoon 3+OSRS while I have down time, so more likely to find time for this blogging during the weekends. Looking forward to the new year very much and I am thankful to have any amount of eyes on this project as I develop it. Thank you for reading!

Would you ever write an AU fic that doesn’t have already existing source material? If no, why not? And if yes, how would it be different in terms of length, character development, etc?
Also, I know KE is THE source material but I mean an AU based on just a random idea as opposed to a tv show / movie if that makes sense ??
oh yeah, easy! i have an idea for a strip club au and another that's publicfigure/celebrity!eve and stylist/makeup artist!vil. i have a small handful of others that aren't fully formed enough for me to really give them much more than a few scene ideas, tho, kinda like tiny one-two-three shots. i can see strip club au being decently long (maybe 50k-90k?) and the other- lets call it celebrity au- being maybe 40k-60k. these are all ballpark numbers tho bc i don't ever write with wordcount in mind, i just write.
