Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam, Barsaat Ki Raat, Mr. & Mrs. '55)—The Venus of India; heart-throb of all who saw her; responsible for the sexual awakening of every single desi lesbian I know (including me!) And my god, she is breathtakingly beautiful. Look at the subtle grace with which she moves, and that smile - the kind of radiant smile that can make you laugh with sheer delight, or cry because of its hidden pain. Those wild curls! That Cupid's bow! The way she tilts back her head and smiles at you with mischief dancing in her eyes! She has a way of looking at the camera that makes you feel she's sharing a private joke just with you; it's something about that quizzical twist of the lips and eyebrows. As an actress, she is inimitable; she seems to effortlessly inhabit roles ranging from a heart-broken courtesan to a laughter-loving socialite. Fun fact : she's had quite the fan following in Greece! Stelios Kazantidis even wrote a song as a tribute to her.
Olivia de Havilland (Adventures of Robin Hood, Gone With the Wind, The Heiress)— The woman who took on the Studio System at the height of their power and Won! A double Oscar winner! Is magnetic and beautiful in everything she's in and gave us all the juicy scandal with her sibling rivalry with Joan Fontaine! Before the Oscar Slap was the Oscar sister snub! Also everything she wears in Robin Hood she makes beautiful even a purple green and orange monstrosity how does she do it! Anyway this scene is one of my old Hollywood favourites
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Madhubala:
Tumblr media
An icon of Bollywood, who was well known for her beauty and has continued to inspire performances and songs into the 21st century. She was at times described as "the number one beauty of the Indian screen" and "the biggest star in the world".
SHE IS EVERYTHING AHHH. JUST LOOK AT HER SMILE-
Tumblr media
She's been nicknamed the Marilyn Monroe of India and was one of the highest paid actresses in the Hindi film industry (the term Bollywood did not exist yet) during the 1950s. Also an extremely talented dancer and singer
Tumblr media
SHE'S JUST SO STUNNING, like seeing her eyes IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATES YOU, THE DANCING, THE BEAUTY!!!!!!!!! She worked in Bollywood for over 20 years and passed away at a sad early age of 36, BUT THE IMPACT SHE HAD WAS UNMATCHED!!!!!
Tumblr media
That sassy sideways glance she does always has me WEAK AT THE KNEES. And when she's making silly faces at the camera to mimic someone ahhhh my gay little heart <3
Tumblr media
Olivia de Havilland:
Tumblr media
She is just perfection. She has a smile that is looks like it is barely holding back, and yet so reserved as well.
Tumblr media
Broke the contract system and won freedoms for actors (the de Havilland Law is still in effect I believe). 2 time Oscar winner. Beautiful and smart
Tumblr media
She legally challenged the movie studios' unfair contracts and won, setting a precedent for other actors to be treated more fairly. This was at great cost to her financially and essentially getting her blacklisted for years but the resulting judicial opinion is still known as the De Havilland Law and has won her a great deal of praise and admiration.
Tumblr media
Her performance in The Heiress is one of my all-time favorites, she’s so good at making melodrama feel real and grounded without sacrificing any of the passion/drama.
Serenely beautiful, she struck a balance between crowd-pleasing fluff and prestigious drama. Famously at odds with her equally successful sister Joan Fontaine, she was too much of a lady to ever say anything public. Successfully sued Ryan Murphy for portraying her as a saucy gossip in Feud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the period costume + eye patch combo in That Lady is just an absolute serve
Tumblr media
She has the most adorable and cherubic face and voice

Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: DEDH ISHQIYA (2014, Hindi) dir. ABHISHEK CHAUBEY
Dedh Ishqiya is a dark comedy which follows two criminals, Khalu (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi), who decide to con a widowed noblewoman, Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit). Unbeknownst to them, Begum Para has got a plan of her own: find a rich suitor, swindle him out of his money, then run away with her maid, Muneera (Huma Qureshi), with whom she is in love. The womens' plan takes several alarming turns, but ultimately Begum Para and Muneera are able to trick Khalu and Babban, elope together, and live happily ever after.
The lesbian relationship is loosely based off of Ismat Chughtai's 1942 short story Lihaaf, which was an extremely controversial story in British colonial India for its allusions to sexuality and lesbianism, and which resulted in the author being called for an obscenity trial. The short story includes abusive and pedophilic elements which Dedh Ishqiya does away with; instead, Begum Para and Muneera's relationship is one of mutual love between adults.
Abhishek Chaubey discusses his films, including how he came to include the "lesbian strain" in Dedh Ishqiya and how "learned friends" helped him with coding the relationship, here
The actress Madhuri Dixit has been in multiple gay and gay-coded media, both as a supportive character and as the gay character herself. She has also been supportive in real life of the LGBTQ community.

5 songs from QLs (queer movies and shows)
Thank you for tagging me @dummerjan 💚
🎶They do not have to be custom-made for the series.
🎶Non-western tracks only. Let's support Asian music and languages! 🎶Feel free to tag anyone who may be interested in participating. 🎶Add #5qls tag to your post for others to find the new favourites!
So, I'll start the list with some Hindi songs as that's my beloved mother-tongue 😍 I'll basically list the queer movie/show name first and then its OST.
1. Maja Ma - Buniyaad by The Yellow Diary
This movie left me stunned. It was the first indian queer film I watched centred around a middle aged lesbian woman and it left me feeling so much.. the acting by Madhuri and Simone is stellar. I'm only sad we didn't get more scenes between them.
This is the reprised version. The original version is also on YouTube and both are lovely 💚
youtube
2. Shubh Mangal Zada Savdhaan - Raakh by Arjit Singh
I think this entire playlist is just going to be of songs that make me ache. Please do read the English translation of Raakh if possible. The lyrics are pure love and pain and really showcase the pain queer couples go through and how they have to fight tooth and nail for their love.
youtube
3. Couple of mirrors - Immortality by Zhang Nan
This song makes my heart ache. It is soft like a lullaby yet there's such pain. Simply heavenly PLUS it's sung by the very actress who plays the lead role of You Yi! And the show? Amazing! The whole old era vibe and the bond between our two ladies was killer (given that one of them is a literal killer lol) Love you Yan Wei and You Yi 💚
youtube
4. KinnPorsche The Series - Contradict by Season Five
Another song that reduces me to tears. It's stuck with me for so long and yet I couldn't bear myself to listen to it for a while there. That's how much it made me hurt.
youtube
5. We Best Love - Blue Lover by YU and Unbreakable love by Eric
Don't ask me to choose. I love both these songs. Just.. Just go listen to them 😢😍
youtube
youtube
Well here comes an end to the literal cry fest. Hope you all check out the movies and shows. Enjoooyyyy and don't forget to carry some tissues 😙😙😙
Tagging @fanshipper1412 @therealblessedaffliction @vvitcherys and anyone else who wants to take this up 😄💚

The work that Sharma started with this film has become a staple in many books on Islam and at U.S. University libraries. The website Faith in Equality put it at number 9 in a list of LGBT films about faith.IMDb rates the film at 13 on its list of 58 titles under the category of "Best documentaries on religion, spirituality & cults".The film first premiered at the TIFF in 2007, and has been screened to great acclaim at several film festivals around the world. The film went on to win 15 other international awards.
Plot
At starting it shows a glimpse of Islam across the globe. The film first featured Hendrick Muhsin, a South African,Pakistani Gay & Muslim. He is also the first Out Gay Imam of Africa.Filmmaker Parvez got into the deep of Hendicks's personal life struggles, his understanding of Islam & reconciliation of intersecting identities.

Sana is a Black Lesbian refugee, & a victim of FGM.She has a deeper understanding of Islam & told Parvez that Queerness is not against Islam.Sana didn't have any kind of sexual relation with any women. But she had intimate loving relations with women.Like others, she came to France as a refugee.Sana befriend with Maryam & Mazen.
Maryam is Moroccan-born queer womxn who lives in Paris. Her girlfriend Maha lives in Egypt. Both lovers met each other on Bint-al Nas - a meeting site for Arab LBTQ womxn.Maryam still believes that she deserves punishment for her lesbian sexual relationship. Both have survived abusive marriages and can only share their love for each other in private.Maryam & Maha go on a shared journey of search and discovery of female homosexuality. In Al-Azhar, they discover an old bookstore where they find a copy of the Fiqh al-Sunnah(The Laws of the Prophet). In the heart of an ancient mosque in the Citadel, they discover beautiful Islamic calligraphy as they declare their impossible love for each other.

Ferda & Kiymet are a happy couple in Turkiye.Kiymet belongs from a conservative family. In her early Kiymet's marriage was fixed with a man.Kiymet's marriage ended up at divorce. Then she found Ferda, her soulmate.Ferda's mom is very supportive & tolerant of sexuality.Ferda is a devout sufi queer muslim, who honors Rumi - a prominent sufi icon for both LGBTQ+ & Straight Muslims.

The filmmaker also documented the diverse tolerance of sexuality in sufi traditions (Pakistan,India & Turkey).
Is it the first film on Islam & Homosexuality?
''A Jihad for Love'' is called world's 1st film on Islam & Homosexuality.A Jihad for Love would be an international feature documentary film rather than world's first film on LGBT muslims. However there are several films that focused on LGBTQ muslim or Queerness in Islam. For Example:
Road to Love (2001)
Act of Faith (2002)
Haremde dört kadin (1965)
Hammam al-Malatily (1973)
Köçek (1975)
Ihtiras Firtinasi (1984)
My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)
Marcides (1993)
Istanbul Beneath My Wings (1996)
Hamam (1997)
Lola & Billy the Kid (1999)
Production
Bismillah (In the name of Allah) was considered as an early working title for this documentary.Among muslims, the word Bismillah is very auspicious & used before beginning actions, speech, writing. But the tittle was not considered as the final title of this film due to controversy.
A Jihad for Love is produced by Halal Films, in association with the Sundance Documentary Film Fund,Channel 4 (UK),ZDF (Germany),Arte (France-Germany),Logo (US) & SBS Australia. The director & producer Parvez Sharma & co-producer Sandi Dubowski raised more than a million dollars over a 6 years period to make the film.
In an interview with The NY Times,Parvez Sharma said that he "would shoot touristy footage on the first 15 minutes & the last 15 minutes of a tape", with interviews for documentary in between, to avoid having his footage seized at customs. He compiled 400 hours of footage from a dozen countries ranging from Iraq to Pakistan to the UK.The nature of the work placed him at considerable personal risk.He adopted hardcore guerrilla film-making tactics, pretending to be a tourist in one country,a worker for an AIDS charity in another country.Wherever he went,he asked his queer friends to keep copies of footage and destroy the tapes once he had successfully smuggled the masters out of the country.
During his filmmaking Parvez traveled several countries including Pakistan, Iraq, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, USA, UK, Turkey, France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa,[...].
Interviews
In an interview with NY Times magazine,Parvez Sharma said,"Being gay and Muslim myself,I knew that this film had to be about us all coming out— as Muslims. It's about claiming the Islam that has been denied to us." With a target audience of "faithful Muslims," he undertook a variety of outreach tactics, including leafleting mosques, blanketing MySpace, screening in Astoria for 15 key progressive Muslim leaders. In an interview to Der Spiegel, Sharma explained the significance of the title: "I'm not looking at jihad as battle.I'm looking at the greater jihad in Islam, which is the jihad as the struggle with the self.I also thought it was really compelling to take a word that only has one connotation for most -- to take that, reclaim it and put it in the same phrase as love, which is universal.I really think it explains it very well.
Film Screening
A Jihad for Love first premiered in Toronto International Film Festival(TIFF) in September 2007.At its premier, the director was given a security guard for safety reasons. After this film festival A Jihad for Love got huge applaud internationally.A Jihad for Love film premiered as the opening film of Panorama Documente of the Berlin Film Festival in February 2008.
The film was screened in The Rio Film Festival,Brazil on September 2007,Morelia Film Festival,Mexico, on October 2007,The Sheffield DocFest on November 2007,London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival on March 2008,Melbourne International Film Festival on July 2008,Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival on March 2008,etc.A Jihad for Love's first premier in African continent was The Out in Africa Film Festival in Johannesburg and Cape Town,November 2007. On April,2008 A Jihad for Love film was successfully screened at Istanbul International Film Festival. It was the first time that the film allowed to screen in a muslim-majority country.Film also screened in Q! Film Festival of Indonesia.Although singapore banned the film from festival in 2008 due to its sensitive subject.
Popularity
A Jihad for Love film's sale and broadcast on NDTV, South Asia's largest network in 2008 would have a "remarkable" impact on this LGBTQ cause. "NDTV's broadcast has in effect made the film available to over one billion viewers in India,Bangladesh,Pakistan, & large portions of the Middle East and Africa. The various distributors and their Total Rating Points in European television, the Indian/South-Asian sale with its claimed footprint of 15 billion viewers, the theatrical release & the purportedly large numbers of Netflix viewers made the filmmakers and the TRP experts arrive at a number of 8 million total viewers calculated over a period of four years for this documentary.
International Muslim Dialogue Project
Immediately after the film's theatrical launch around the USA,Parvez & Sandi launched the International Muslim Dialogue Project on 2008.The aim of the project was to organize screenings of the film in Muslim Capitals.Sharma called it the "Underground Network Model" of film distribution. He invented this model sending unmarked DVD's of the film with friends & colleagues to Muslim capitals across the world with full permission to sell pirated copies. Some of the boldest were Beirut,Cairo,Karachi, eight cities in Indonesia & Kuala Lumpur
The film was screened privately screened in Iran,Palestine,Bangladesh and Somalia.

Sharan Dhaliwal is an openly bisexual British-Indian writer, journalist and activist. Dhaliwal is the founder and editor of Burnt Roti, a South Asian magazine. She also created Oh Queer Cupid, a queer speed dating and comedy night, in addition to founding and directing Middlesex Pride. Dhaliwal’s memoir Burning My Roti: Breaking Barriers as a Queer Indian Woman was published this year.
Since Burnt Roti’s inception, I came out as bisexual and realised that a lot of the reason that I had held back from living my true life was because of the way I grew up. I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a continued pained experience for others, so I started to focus on LGBTQ+ stories, and out of that have created Middlesex Pride. It’s the first Pride event for Middlesex – I want to focus on discussions and education. I grew up in Southall and Hounslow and, along with many other South Asian people, was immersed in a very traditional life. When I came out, I noticed messages from people thanking me for doing it, but also telling me that they can not – I learnt that a lot of these people lived in the Middlesex area. There’s a severe lack of LGBTQ+ visibility in communities there and that creates two things – a lot of people don’t understand what sexuality means for the LGBTQ+ community and tend to focus on sexual acts or HIV. It means that the stigma attached to it causes young people to stifle themselves, sometimes exacerbating mental health issues. Another thing it does it creates a doubt in the minds of those who are discovering their sexuality. If it isn’t discussed or taken seriously, it must not be real. People could live a long time (like myself), keeping any feelings or desires to themselves. My mental health suffered, I was in various relationships I didn’t actually want to be in and I was stuck in a destructive pattern of getting with someone, disliking the situation and leaving it soon after.
So attitudes towards sex and sexuality where you grew up were a little guarded?
There’s a stigma around sex and sexual acts (like with much of society), and it’s considered ‘dirty’. Talking about our bodies is seen as ‘disgusting’ – including puberty and menstruation. A lot of South Asian womxn learn to keep to themselves – never asking questions and never really learning more than they’re told. It’s changing a little, but there are still remnants of it there, which I want to break down. Older generations would, for example, say that they never heard of the word ‘lesbian’ before. There’s not really a word that translates in the Punjabi language now (I’m not sure if that’s changed over time) but there is a language barrier. Teaching certain words, what they mean and what effect they would (and wouldn’t) have on them is important. There’s still stigmas and negative connotations, but it needs to be broken down and explained.
So, being bi! What are your experiences like as a bi woman of colour in 2019?
Ok so let’s talk about fetishisation. The first woman I went on a proper date with was a white American, who seemed to have an obsession with Indians. I’m not gonna lie, I ignored the red flag from her text which popped up on my phone in all caps “I REALLY WANT AN INDIAN”. At first I wondered if she was Indian, and then she spent the rest of the day texting me about Bollywood films, as if I knew nothing about them. It felt strange. But I was incredibly attracted to her and just wanted to go on a date, so I did. She didn’t speak too much about Indian stuff then, but the texts continued – she wanted me to teach her Hindi. I suddenly felt like I was working as an unpaid language tutor. For some reason, I expected to experience fetishisation from cis men, not from the LGBTQ+ community – it was that naivety that was the biggest blow. I’ve had struggles being specifically bi on dating apps – lesbians haven’t taken me seriously. I’ve had some unmatch me because they assumed I was just “messing around” on the app. I’m now in a relationship with a woman and it feels amazing – she doesn’t question my bisexuality, she knows I want to be with her. It’s not just the lesbian community – there are bad eggs everywhere. But bisexuality is definitely considered a ‘half assed attempt at being gay’.
How did your family react when you came out?
My dad had a pure and wholesome reaction, where he quoted me verbatim “Sharan, sexuality is fluid” and I lost it. Firstly, credit me when you quote me, secondly I don’t even know if he knows what he’s saying. But bless him, he doesn’t care about my sexual preference, he just wants me to be happy. My mother had a strange reaction – she jumped between disliking it and not caring. I think she thinks there’s fifty per cent chance I will marry a man, so she’s just relying on that. I don’t want to get into maths with her, so I just let her be for now. But a big part of Middlesex Pride is to allow her and others like her to find out more about what it means to want to be with someone who isn’t the ‘expected gender’. I want her to know it’s okay if I don’t marry a cis man. In fact, I’m going to marry my girlfriend, so she has to be on board or she won’t get to hang out with her grandkids lol.

Have you watched any other lgbt+ shows other than BLs. Recently or even in the past. You have any film recommendations in this genre?
Hello there
Yep I have and still do. I am either watching thrillers or queer stuff, I rarely watch mainstream het stuff.
I would say I have quite a long list of queer media consumed. I mostly see them divided in 2 types.
1. About the queer experience, where queerness is the plot.
2. Where characters happen to be queer, the queerness is not the plot.
Historically people have fought long and hard to get the type 2 representation in media. Not my pick, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
You have mentioned nothing about your preferences so I'll just rec some with a little description to go with, so you have an idea what's it about.
Brokeback Mountain : Classic, cowboys falling in love, sad ending. Watch it for Heath Ledger.
Weekend : Young British guys hookup and fall for each other over a weekend. Not happy but hopeful ending. Excellent movie by a LGBTQ director.
Shelter : A young guy from a small town who dreams of becoming an artist, falls for his best friend's gay brother. Excellent story, off the charts chemistry, found family. Happy ending. It's my go to comfort movie.
Free Fall: A German movie about 2 cops falling in love. One is married and straight(or so he thinks) , the other is out. This movie hurts a lot, it's a mature plot. Cheating, adultery, drugs etcis involved. Explicit scenes. Sad ending.
Out in the dark: A Israeli lawyer and Palestinian student fall in love. A story with political background. Hard hitting. Sad ending.
The way he looks: A blind boy is best friends with a girl. Add to the mix a new cute student, which makes things complicated. Excellent coming of age and realization of sexuality with a mix of navigating life with a disability. Very cute actors, all three of them. Happy ending.
Beautiful thing: Two troubled boys who are bullied find love and comfort in each other. It's witty and sweet. Happy ending.
Blue is the warmest colour: A high school girl navigates love and relationship. The leads fall for each other, then move in together and fall apart. It's long ass movie, very interesting takes on society, queers, politics etc. Explicit scenes. Visually pleasing. A rare piece of cinema where the story follows a teenager upto adulthood.
The handmaiden: A Korean film about a Japanese lady heir falling in love with her Korean maid, who originally is a con sent to deceive her. Amazing movie. It has everything the mystery, the thrill, best direction, crisp storytelling and explicit sex scenes. Happy ending. Watch it.
Portrait of lady on fire: A french historical movie in which a countess falls in love with the women who paints her portrait. Good direction, chemistry. Sad ending as expected for queer historical drama.
Yes or No: A Thai movie of a girl from a rich orthodox family and her tomboy roommate falling in love. If you like Thai BLs you would probably like this. Very similar storyline and tropes. It's very very soft. And epic level of pining, even after they get together they are still pining. Honest conversations about the fear and coming to love a girl. Happy ending.
Badhai Do: A Hindi movie wherein a gay guy and a lesbian girl get married under society pressure as a deal. It's a fun take on the whole thing along with some serious society whiplash. If you like Bollywood you might like it.
I'll stop now, let me know if you like any of the above and want something on same lines or different. I have plent more suggestions. I should probably do an excel sheet or something. But these were the ones which I liked and rewatch quite often.

Linda Darnell (Hangover Square, Unfaithfully Yours, A Letter to Three Wives)— Her dick is ENORMOUS. She was Fox’s resident bad girl for a while, and she was goddamn sexy during it. She could also play sweeter, and she was still beautiful when she wasn’t crushing men beneath her heels, but also she sometimes crushed men beneath her heels and it was really hot
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

ok i have a lot of feelings about linda darnell. she was so complex and messy and talented and just such a tragic figure and deserved so much better. her mom basically ignored the rest of her kids in favor of pushing linda into hollywood, which led to her missing out on a lot of childhood experiences, prevented her from enrolling in college, and caused some mental health issues later in life. it’s especially heartbreaking that she met such a preventable end so early in life, and i always wonder what might’ve happened if she had been able to make more movies. she also disliked the hollywood social scene, which i think is totally valid of her. anyway, i loved her in a letter to three women and unfaithfully yours, and especially in no way out, which i think is one of her better roles, really showcasing her acting ability. and the fact that she never really got recognition keeps me up at night,, in my heart she has all the oscars

The short film Geeli Pucchi follows Bharti (Konkona Sen Sharma), a Dalit gender non-conforming lesbian who works in a factory and aspires to a desk job in the upstairs office. She befriends Priya (Aditi Rao Hydari), a Brahmin lesbian who is trapped in a heterosexual marriage and who gets the desk job that Bharti is denied because of her caste. The bond between the two women grows quickly, but everything takes a turn when Bharti confesses the truth of her caste to Priya.
Neeraj Ghaywan discusses caste, gender, sexuality, and his approach to making this short film here.

Baka Bukas (SPOILER ALERT)
So let's delve in to Samantha Lee's beloved masterpiece of a movie "Baka Bukas", a tagalog phrase whose direct english translation would be "Maybe tomorrow"; but as a queer Filipina, it is a tagalog phrase that says so much by itself even by just having 2 words. For me it always meant "Baka bukas, pwede na." which may be translated to: "Maybe tomorrow, things are possible." or a better fit for its context would be: "Maybe tomorrow, we can try again."
So the story follows Alex, a lesbian who is closeted out of fear of losing her actress bestfriend, Jess. The movie starts with the line: "We were never really just friends." then proceeds to show scenes of them together to shed light on what their "friendship" looks like, and moving on to hear how their usual conversations go, like how they update each other about work, but one exchange really stuck with me:
Alex: I am the number one fan of who you are at 3AM. Jess: 3AM lang? (Just who I am at 3AM?)
You don't say that to your "just friends". We women have a different degree of friendship compared to others; we love uplifting our best friends and we love making time for them, and we love doing things for them, but saying that you are the number one fan of themselves at 3AM is a different type of love. I believe Alex meant she loves Jess when she's "bare" and just herself. I loved how they chose the cast members because they perfectly fit the characters. I could not imagine any other actresses play Jess, and Alex; their facial expressions and tone are subtle but if you have watched the movie more than once, it would give you a different perspective than just being a straightforward movie wherein our main character did not end up with "the" girl. Again. Lesbian films, am I right? heavy sighs
Anyway, there is another scene, a non-climactic one, that I just wanted to emphasize its importance on representation of queer women who came out late (i.e Me), wherein Alex interviews Jess because of the latter's upcoming show. Alex asked "Paano ka mainlove? (What does love do to you?" to which Jess responded:
"Minsan naiisip ko na hindi pa talaga ko na-inlove." (Sometimes I think that I haven't really fallen inlove) despite of being in numerous relationships with men.
We have been built up on heteronormative gender roles that some of us would not realize that being inlove towards the same gender and being in a relationship with them is actually an option. I can personally attest to this, being that I only knew of love when I met my girlfriend. Growing up, I would always want and crave the attention from my male friends/classmates, but now realizing that something was always missing, or …off. And sexually, there was always this feeling of dissatisfaction. I had always brushed it off as a hormonal thing, but now being with my girlfriend, I realized it's because I'm not truly attracted to men…
Which then brings us to the next part of the movie wherein Jess accidentally finds out about Alex's sexual identity, and Alex having explained it through food analogy which could not be more simple:
Alex: Just because everyone here orders bagnet, doesn't mean I have to order it too. I want my tapa, that's just what I want.
to which Jess evidently expresses her dismay towards Alex because she had not told her that she's gay but choosing to tell her distant mother instead:
Jess: Ayoko na. Ayoko na ng bagnet na yan. Nawalan na ko ng gana. (I don't want to eat bagnet anymore, I lost my appetite.) Alex: Gusto mo ng tapa? (Do you want tapa?)
This. This exchange just right after Alex's analogy of bagnet and tapa. See, I love these little scenes because most would brush them off or see them as unimportant but really, these little scenes adds flavor to the movie. Shortly afterwards their friendship progresses to a level higher than just being friends, mainly because Jess proceeded to make a move on Alex by holding hands with her, and kissing her. (YES. Kissing.) This confuses the viewer because they thought Jess is straight, and some would be angered or irritated at least by this, thinking Jess only showed interest after knowing of Alex's identity with the intention of playing around at an unknown and undiscovered field. Which I believe and will stand my ground on it is not the case; I believe Jess had also been inlove with her bestfriend for so long she just did not acknowledge that it was in a romantic way, because again as I said, we were never really taught that it is an option to be inlove with the same gender.
The movie went at a slow but steady pace showing how their relationship developed, and how conflicts followed. Jess is just beginning to reach the peak of her acting career then her talent manager warned that being gay would harm it; while Alex just got out of the closet but now is being nudged back in because of what it might do to Jess' career. Both felt they had to choose and compromise something important, ultimately leading to their break up, with Alex saying that they should just be friends. Just friends. Saying that they will always want something more, and that they can't have everything.
Alex: You want me but you want your career. I want you but I want to tell everyone about you. What we want doesn't exist. Hindi pa ngayon (Not yet.)
Bringing us back to the hopeful phrase "Baka Bukas". Maybe tomorrow. Baka bukas pwede na.
After a year, it was implied that Alex had not been in contact with Jess but was invited by their common friend to a birthday party, leaving Alex with no choice but to interact with her. Jess approached her asking what are her plans for tonight. Ending the movie with Alex answering "Just this." leaving us wondering what happens next. I would love to believe that they had their 2nd chance, that they had the best conclusion "bukas" could bring.
Samantha Lee just showed us a glimpse of reality on being queer, and it was done beautifully and with fairness. She protected her characters well and you would know that the movie was really targeted to the community. Of course, with her being also a part of the community, some might think it must have been easy. No. It's hard to share a story that's entertaining and at the same time, feels real. And the movie's aesthetics, the script, they scratched an itch in my brain. I would forever love this movie.
