i'm sure you're probs sick of this whole thing and totally feel free to not publish this but i just want to say you fully hit the nail on the head pointing out that some of the biggest lestappen fics going deal with uniquely lgbt+ themes and the cishet people eat that up and they eat up all the cutesy mlm content but then claim to feel alienated by real gay people existing and particularly gay people who aren't men.

really grinded my gears a little bit because like max and charles are not (publicly and thus thats where this conversation ends bc boundaries) gay but i'd wager a big chunk of the fic writers and tumblr users and editors and artists probably are queer - and at least speaking for myself particularly before i was comfortable with my sexuality fandom spaces have always been where I expressed that before I could in real life so to like come into a queer space enagage with mlm content and then go "actually you real life gay person shut up about it its alienating me" is like ???

sorry this turned into a rant but as a fellow lesbian the tl;dr is basically fuck those anons (and honestly you were right, alex IS everything and charles IS just ken)

I received a lot of asks on this topic and I'm determined to publish every single one and give them answers they deserved, mostly just to show everyone that the homophobic anons are vastly outnumbered. So thank you for sharing this with us <3

I think I speak for a lot of us on here when I say that tumblr fandom space is where I discovered my queerness/that being gay was an actual thing that people did, and was probably where it was first expressed. seems like a common theme to call avatrice crumbs from people who only watch warrior nun through gifsets

yes they only kiss once, and they don't explicitly talk about their feelings until the very end.

i know we've had a lot of history with wlw representation on television, i've seen all the charts about wlw couples getting significantly less screen time than other combinations of couples. so i understand why people are skeptical. but this is not the same as the other shows with token gays where they make characters gay and barely give them any screentime.

literally the biggest evidence you have for this, other than ava being the lead, is that ava and beatrice are literally the only romance on the show. there isn't another het romance, or any other romance on the show beside or overshadowing the lesbian couple. warrior nun is not a show about romance. it's about show about warrior nuns that just so happens to have a leading lesbian couple.

yeah if wn had a het couple that kissed all the time and avatrice only getting to kiss once, then it's crumbs. but i cannot express how different it is when avatrice is literally the only couple on the show.

because then the intention matters. how the writers and directors choose to show the relationship progress matters. when we don't have to compare, the other ways you show a romantic relationship on screen matters. and they do show. they show beatrice's gay panic. they show ava's attraction to beatrice. they show both of them expressing explicit jealousy. they show beatrice lose her shit when she thought ava died. they show ava asking beatrice to run away with her. and then finally they show the kiss and the love declarations.

here, kristina tonteri-young talks about them contemplating a second kiss before ava goes through the arq, but they decided against it because they wanted the kisses to mean different things. and two kisses too close to each other would lessen the impact of the first one. they've thought about it, and each progression in ava's and beatrice's relationship means something.

it's not crumbs, it's the opposite. well, it is crumbs, but it's not the type of crumbs they throw to "make they gays happy". it's well intended, slow burn crumbs, so that when they do actually get together and they do get to do the coupley shit, it's gonna feel so much better.

we never get slow burn so we don't know what it looks like, but im gonna skfjdkfjdj scream because we deserve the slow burn and the happy ending at the end. stream warrior nun season 2 for the happy ending.

June is PRIDE month. And here at Queliot Events, we want you to give the characters of Magicians the Pride experience they deserve!

We want the entire month of June to be about creating and celebrating all fanworks centered around Pride or the characters of The Magicians exploring their sexual orientations and/or their gender identities.

This event will be open to any works relevant to these themes from the show OR the books. It is open to all ships and all characters within the Magicians universe.

All sexuality and gender identity themes are welcome. We’d love to see fanworks revolving around the Magicians characters exploring their queerness beyond what may have been presented on screen/within the books.

This includes any sexual orientations beyond heterosexuality - such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or asexual. These definitely do not encompass the full spectrum of sexuality but are merely examples.

This event also includes the characters exploring gender identities beyond cisgender labels assigned at birth. We encourage stories about the Magicians characters exploring any variety of trans+ experiences!

There is no need to stick to canon for this event - AUs are welcome and encouraged

A few possible prompts to get started:

A character goes to their first (or second or third) Pride in NYC.

A character has their first experience with gender expression/gender euphoria and realizes they may not identify with their gender assigned at birth.

A character comes out to their friends/family regarding her sexuality or gender identity.

Our hashtag for this event is #TMQueerAF and the collection will be open on AO3 from 06/01 - 06/30.

2020 HIGHLIGHTS ✨

rules: list your top 10 shows (bl or not) you watched in 2020 (doesn’t necessarily have to be shows that came out in 2020 though!)

1. 2GETHER & STILL2GETHER

my first thai drama, and even after all the amazing shows i’ve watched this year, it still has a special place in my heart. watching 2gether was the first time i’d ever seen a queer romcom that just... was. for me, by the simple fact of its being, 2gether was revolutionary. and then still2gether came along and took all the best things about the first season and gave us something beautiful and quiet and lovely and just proved to me, once and for all, that queer happiness doesn’t need to justify its own existence. there can be gay cuddles on the beach for no other reason than that we want them. 

2. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

i don’t really have the words for this one but. it makes my heart so very soft.

3. FRIEND ZONE 2: DANGEROUS AREA

season one was mindless fun because everyone was an absolute trashfire and it was hella cathartic to watch, but season 2... wow. i love it for so many reasons: it has messy and authentic queer rep; the characterisation is excellent and i somehow care about all of the characters; amazing women taking centre stage(!); a wlw relationship with lesbian, ace and bipolar rep; multiple interesting plotlines; actual character development; arm weerayut as a chaos gremlin... absolutely one of my favourites of 2020.

4. CHERRY MAGIC

i don’t think i need to explain this one, which is fortunate, because i have no idea how exactly i’d describe the happy-warm-fuzzy-queer-seen-loving-affirmed-profound feeling that rises in my chest whenever i think about it. 

5. THE GIFTED: GRADUATION

confession: i liked season 2 more than season 1 (with the exception of the ending, which we don’t talk about). season 1 was enjoyable and interesting, but for me it was season 2 which made me love this series. it did some incredibly interesting and complicated things (even if it didn’t quite nail the landing): it pushed characters to the breaking point and wove so many layers into the story and questioned its own underlying themes. plus, watching it alongside everyone in the fandom made it 200% better. i love all of you and i love this show. egg girl 5eva.

6. THE SHIPPER

i 100% understand why so many people didn’t like this show, or found it problematic, but through some fluke it absolutely worked for me (even the ending). one day i will write an essay explaining my rationale, but for now i’ll just say that it’s one of my favourite shows about adolescence and queerness and identity and compassion and friendship and love that i’ve ever watched. 

7. YYY

this series is absolutely off its rocker, and it somehow managed to be one of the most affirming shows i’ve watched. it shouldn’t have worked by it did, and i love it so much.

8. 3 WILL BE FREE

absolutely iconic. amazing plot, stunning visuals, great characters, canon polyamory, jennie being incredible... what a series.

9. MANNER OF DEATH

i love the fact that this show exists; i love the mix of crime and romance; i love maxtul’s acting; i love the central relationship; i love bun. i know we’re not even halfway through yet, but this show is doing something special and i’m so grateful that i get to watch it unfold in real time. 

10. CHIHAYAFURU (SEASON 3)

odd one out on my list, but I had to include it. chihayafuru is my all-time favourite anime and it finally got a third season, which is somehow even better than the first two. mashima taichi is one of my favourite characters of all time and his storyline hits me on such a profound level. plus, in the years since i first say this show i’ve fallen in love with classical japanese literature (particularly heian poetry) so i had newfound appreciation for the karuta matches (aka i cried every time someone recited one of my favourite poems)

other favourites: together with me, he’s coming to me, sotus and sotus s, my dear loser: edge of 17, why r u, theory of love, wake up chanee!, gameboys, pearl next door, uta koi (anime), three kingdoms (2010), blood and water (netflix). (itsay would almost certainly be on my list if i’d had time to watch it. same with dark blue kiss, which i had to pause so i could do my assignments)

Final Thoughts

well, it’s been... a year (i don’t think anyone needs a reminder of the details) but writing this post has reminded me of all the amazing shows and people I discovered over the course of it.

So my problems with Brian’s relationship with Lindsay starts with CowLip’s inability to write established relationships and the themes of misogyny and biphobia in the show. It’s like they couldn’t imagine a femme lesbian with no desire for a man.

Lindsay is a weird combination of in love with Brian (the gifset I just reblogged is right before a scene where Lindsay confesses that she fantasized about her and Brian getting married etc) in a way she never demonstrates with Melanie (she looks at Brian with these soppy heart eyes and never looks at Mel that way) and maternal. She sends him mixed messages “oh Brian I love that you’re not apologetic and live life on your terms” and also “but when will you grow up and settle down with Justin?” Similarly “oh Brian give me your handsome sexy sperm, don’t worry you won’t have any responsibilities. Melanie and I will be the parents!” But also “when will you visit Your Son?” (Again disrespecting Melanie) and also the message “be involved but not THAT involved.”

Brian for his part doesn’t push back and demand better treatment. But then he never does, does he? I hated his line to her about “you can like cock and you can like pussy but not at the same time” - your biphobia is showing Kinney. Oh and calling them The Munchers, boiling their entire identity down to one sexual act isn’t cool either.

Hey, my day has been pretty alright, thanks for asking.

Most of the posts about removing or reducing your exposure to fandom and shipping are more talking about how you should be watching and reading in media that doesn’t necessarily have the potential for fandom to develop, or doesn’t have characters that are shippable. Think Moonlight, or Rafiki, or even the Handmaiden. They are amazing movies, really fucking good and beautifully well written - but I wouldn’t say they have a fandom, and I certainly haven’t seen anything about shipping the characters together.

I think when you go into every media you consume expecting or hoping to be able to join a fandom or find a new ship you’re disregarding a whole range of shows, movies, and books that are available and are worth reading. John Wyndham’s work isn’t shippable, nor would it be a candidate for a fandom environment, but I think that it is far superior to the IT novel and movie(s) and many fans of IT would also enjoy the themes and ideas explored in The Chrysalids, for example. But The Chrysalids isn’t marketable to people who prioritise fandom and shipping, because it’s not a novel that facilitates that sort of environment.

I haven’t been shy about my opinions of fandom and how much I hate it. That doesn’t mean I don’t participate in it in private (and even worse, write things for those “fandom bases”.... cringe), but fandom and shipping-obsessed spaces are exhausting and embarrassing to be in. Fandom spaces have been some of the whitest spaces I’ve been in, rife with the fetishisation of gay/bi men, uwu-fication of transgender men and nonbinary people, and outright hostility towards lesbian and transgender women. These spaces often operate with a “pro-ship” stance, where even the most unethical and unhealthy relationships between characters are defended and heralded despite the fact that yes, fiction does influence reality, there have been studies about it. The periods in which I spent greater time in these fandom spaces were the periods I was getting annoyed and genuinely angry at content made for the media I was consuming.

No one is advocating for you to never look at a gifset or read fanfiction or enjoy some fanart; what people are saying is that by only engaging with movies, TV shows, or books because they have a fandom or ship attached to them you’re missing out on a lot of other content and other creations that - quite frankly - are probably better written than whatever tumblr or twitter is fixating on this month.

Objectively wrong.
