Dungeon Meshi Characters as FFXIV Players

Laios -FC leader because no one else wants to do it -Started at Paladin, swapped to Samurai once Nemari and Shuro left the FC and Senshi joined. Senshi won't play anything but Warrior and they needed another DPS. -Owns every lore book -Always in the chat during hunt trains -Working on blue mage but it's going slow because nobody wants to help him -Ask him about his Lightwardens designs (do not) -Favorite Character: You think it's gonna be Hermes but it's Midgardsormr. • campy horror movie rvb au, where they all claim to see different things in the woods, but it turns out literally every single person is the horror. they all embody horror tropes and are, of course, alone in the woods in a summer camp.

• started as an everything everywhere all at once au but turned into something more Evil. Anyway regular domestic au but then the ai from the “alpha universe” jump into people in the main universe when they’re “compatible.” GRIMMONS JUMPSCARE….!!!!! Simmons is gonna be the one to end the world and the ai are either helping or hindering that process. he becomes a literal monster. originally this au was made so I could experiment with purple prose + text art etc but I guess not anymore what the hell

• rvbz au…! Viper and shatter squad are two organizations, viper being a splinter group from the AOD. When they start fighting on chorus, the reds and blues take sides, splitting off into two groups, some staying neutral. both are somewhat regarded as terrorist groups, viper being victims of starlight labs and shatter being a sort of vigilante group that. isn’t very good at it.

• “split ends” au…!! I really hope to bring this one up to the top tier at some point! geotah focus because im ill but it’s mostly balanced as i wanna get all dynamics in. project freelancer, instead of having ai, has units run using a partner. Only one can use it at a time, and the other has to focus on running it, leaving them vulnerable on the battlefield. This goes for enhancements, but it also goes for other things, such as calculations, enemy tracking, etc. they can switch whenever they want. each pair has one unit. god i wish I could write the unseen freelancers because all those silly powers would be chaos. Oh, also, you can steal the armor enhancements like you would ai. Hmm.

• trailer au! one of my first aus, and the ONLY au I’ve written a full outline for. (it’s not very good now that I look back on it.) it asks the question: what if the s15 trailer was EXACTLY what it was eluding to? featuring…Frank staying on the film team and making a trio with jax and dylan, insane murder party reds and blues, spencer plot relevance (somewhat) omalley coming back, the reds and blues failing to beat Hargrove, tucker shooting wash, and one armor enhanced, cobalt colored Tucker.

• s15 rewrite au. after disliking the trailer au I made this one! the blues and reds, instead of being mirrors or even reflections of the main cast, is reflections of what they could have become if they hadn’t changed their old ways, if things had gotten worse. this is basically my snider cut i reorder a shit ton of things etc. also very important carolina was not there when biff died it was just Tex and she didn’t kill biff, she just refused to help him (that kill goes to our friend loco!) anyway it’s more centric of the idea of comparisons between people who have distinguishing differences. Also kuane exists

• interstate au! honestly I have so little in terms of plot but idea wise I have Everyhting. I cannot stop thinking about it sooo..that’s why it’s so high up. Okay I’ll be real this is honestly like a glorified swap au but it’s MY swap au. Basically everything after s5 (also the miniseries) is noncanon and it diverges from there. ft…wash getting sigmapilled by eta, red team maine, red and blue road trip, the quest to find kai (she’s kissing women) and the run from DEAD CAROLINA..!! DEAD..!! oh and church and tex are literally just ghosts. Instead of the director trying to bring back allison and fragmenting one full ai into attributes, he is trying to pair FULL AI with freelancers in an attempt to boil them down to one trait, to harvest them and combine them into a Super Dead Daughter Carolina. wash and eta, or Data (see what I did there) are the collectors which is why they’re the main antags or whatever

• TRIPLETS TRILOGY. OHHHH MY GOOODDDD. I can’t say much because I intend to actually show this one to the world, but WOW. love this one. Basically, the triplets and sherry’s squad are alive. After an alien crash lands on their planet years later, they’re left to explore and find out what they’ve missed while they were gone. It’s split into 3 ‘seasons,’ (with one scrapped mini series), takes place during the recollections, and is looking to be way shorter than I intended it to be, but oh well. It’s where my obsession with the green guy and the white fuck and sherryvera insanity comes from. why did I have to fixate on these random ass mfers what the hell. It’s canon plausible….!! It would never happen!!! But it could!!

Complete hypothetical here but I’ve been thinking a lot about how exactly the new protagonist in Dreadwolf might end up front and center in events that will shake the fate of the entire world. This isn’t so much a theory as it is a neat ‘what if’ because my writer brain cannot turn down a chance to wildly theorize.

So we know Spirits and Fade are going to be crucial the plot of the next game. Elf, Spirit, Demon, or *whatever* Solas is, we know for certain that he’s both native to the Fade and a God Tier Dreamer. More importantly, he’s said that taking down The Veil will have to be done from within The Fade itself.

So regardless of what side your PC takes, wether you want to save him or just stop him, confronting him in The Fade is likely to be inevitable.

Another interesting thing to note is that we know from play tester leaks that even non-mage classes will have the capacity to use *some* amount of magic.

Now how would both of these things be accomplished? Well, we know that using magic requires a person to have some form of connection to The Fade. We also know that benevolent Spirits have sometimes possessed the bodies of the dying to give them a second chance at life, like Wynne from Origins and the Templar Evangeline from Cole’s backstory.

Let’s suppose the protagonist, regardless of race/class/origin gets fatally wounded at the beginning of the game. A benevolent Spirit revived them. From here on, the PC has strange dreams at night. This would be especially interesting for a Qunari or Dwarf, as they are allegedly not capable of dreaming. And not only does the protagonist dream, but they begin to lucid dream. In essence, having a Spirit within them has given them the abilities of a Dreamer.

As not only a Dreamer but one with basically their own built in GPS for navigating The Fade, the PC would have a significant leg up on anyone else trying to hunt down information on The Dreadwolf. They would also have the plot armor of being inhabited by a Spirit, one who chose to do so of their own free will. Given how viciously protective Solas is of Spirits, I can’t imagine he’d want to hurt anyone harboring one so long as that Spirit was not bound by force. Especially if the Spirit happened to be one of Wisdom or Compassion, as he has a special affinity for them.

Having the guidance of a benevolent Spirit could prove an asset in further ways, as well. Spirits as entities are unfathomably old, can quite literally see into the depths of a person’s soul—their feelings, fears, strengths, weaknesses, memories. One of the stories in Tevinter Nights stresses the importance of discovering Solas’ real name—his first and truest identity.

Having help from a Spirit would be pretty useful there. If at any point you do have to face him in combat, a Spirit’s knowledge and abilities would probably also be incredibly helpful, there too. And if you do decide to try and reason with Solas—which is probably how you get the ‘good’ ending—he may be more inclined to listen to you should you have the wisdom of a Spirit to support your reasoning.

Again, this is all half speculation and half thought exercise. One of the biggest challenges a writer faces when dealing with ‘Fate Of The World’ stuff.

anyway- not my favorite episode, even though lupe is fucking awesome. i think it suffers a little from deviating from that classic caper structure and jumping around, but it does its job as an introductory episode.

What do you think is the most fundamentally wrong thing about Bakugo? Because from I see, it's not his character design that is the issue, as it fits the MHA world, is attractive to fans, and explosions are cool(let's be real, we all have seen the shows with explosions in the background as we grew up like in Power Rangers). It's how he gets too much Author's love that gives him back motivation onto why he hates Deku and too much Plot Armor that it poisons everyone, including Bakugo himself.

His backstory of hating Deku for giving out a hand after falling down a creek does not make sense. I rather make him a spoiled prodigy who never received any failure nor genuine help prior to UA. IRL, many prodigies fail in their later years as they were never given the help they've needed as kids nor given the rest and break from what they're doing, that they see getting any sort of help as a weakness. Here, that hatred makes more sense as BK feels that he shouldn't receive help from the weakest kid in the class, who just wants him to rest from everyone else's expectations, given that their school environment is very toxic.

Removing his god tier Plot Armor would flat out improve his character as his antagonizing of Izuku would decrease, he gets more failures in the plot lines that he is forced to be in, namely tying in the finals of the Sports Festival, letting Izuku getting better grades than him in the finals and failing the physical final, etc.

I think fundamentally, I think its the Author's Love from the early fanbase that compounded his problems and wrote him into the future plots which gave him greater Plot Armor than most characters of any series.

You’ve pretty much explained why I hate Katsuki. Katsuki’s problems are a result of him having shitty motives for what he does and him being coddled by Hori. Katsuki’s character is your basic outline of a Shonan Rival, so it shouldn’t be hard to write/develop him, but Hori somehow messes that up.

Oh no oh no Silent Reading au where Fei Du is an actual demon immortal or something

Finally, my man, you get to be older than Luo Wenzhou. By like centuries if not eons!

However! Despite that, despite god tier powers and strength, you somehow accidentally get poisoned and human mortal ass Luo Wenzhou nurses you back to health. Because of course he does.

Oh no I'm coming up with a whole plot. That demon immortals were ravaging Yan City in the human realm, and of course Fei Chengyu brings his little boy to watch and "join in" and learn how. And in the chaos of the city being ransacked, Fei Du's mom is killed by some human warriors. Fei Du collapses, cause it was right in front of him. Luo Wenzhou is a city guard, and he was also fighting the demons, but he stumbles into the scene late and only sees a child standing frozen unmoving in the chaos of swords and blood. So he rushes in and scoops up Fei Du, taking him to safety. And for a few days Fei Du is entirely in the mortal realm, abandoned, because the demons withdraw once they've had their fun and plundered what they wanted. But Fei Du is left behind cause no one thought he was taken to begin with. And all the humans figure he's just a newly orphaned human boy, like so many children after the recent attack.

Luo Wenzhou takes him home, and at first Fei Du is just catatonic almost, not speaking or looking at anything, just totally lost in the moment of seeing his mom looking at him before she fell. Then Tao Ran is called to help, because Luo Wenzhou needs to get this kid to talk and say if he has any family Luo Wenzhou could bring him to, and this kid needs to eat but won't touch his food. Won't even sleep. So Tao Ran comes over, and Fei Du starts absolutely thrashing. Kicking them, screaming, finally reacting. Because Tao Ran is wearing the same kind of armor the people who killed his mom wore. And Luo Wenzhou eventually holds him down, hugging him tight, trying to soothe him, figuring maybe it was the armor freaking him out - the demon soldiers wore armor when they attacked after all (Luo Wenzhou had been in plain clothes, off duty when the attack started in early morning). Eventually he gets Fei Du to admit that "the people who killed mom looked like that." Just glaring like a raging fire, desperate to consume and destroy anything like it.

Luo Wenzhou acknowledges the information, says a lot of people wore armor that day, says if the killer is still around then he'll find the monster for Fei Du. And that, that makes Fei Du's eyes light up with something more like the sun then just a raging flame, makes him look at Luo Wenzhou with a ironclad desperation. A silent plea. To please find them, please be able to, please help me make this even a little alright by getting vengeance for my mom.

Luo Wenzhou doesn't know the killer was a human soldier at first. Though he's not stupid, and the clues add up: Fei Du found among human soldiers mostly, the demons around his mother already slaughtered in the street. Fei Du angry in particular at the look of the human soldiers in the street patrolling in the aftermath, tense around them instead of feeling at ease that the demons won't surprise them unaware again. It would make sense to fear armor generally, but despite Luo Wenzhou's assurances these men are different, it doesn't seem to have any effect on Fei Du's disposition. The way Fei Du pushes him, any chance he gets to ask, which city soldiers were on the street that day: what were their names, what did they look like, what does he know or can he find out?

And Luo Wenzhou doesn't know, is looking into it, but the child's recollection can't perfectly remember the faces to begin with, and Luo Wenzhou has a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that Fei Du doesn't want to thank those warriors. He wants to destroy them. And Luo Wenzhou is dreading the day he can give Fei Du an answer of who they were, knows its peculiar that Fei Du doesn't ask at all about the demons who invaded and doesn't beg Luo Wenzhou to look into them.

And then, one day, as unexpected as Fei Du came into his life as an orphan he saved from a nightmare of swinging blades, Fei Du disappears. Perhaps he feels there is no way Luo Wenzhou can find the culprits with his limited knowledge, and Fei Du can't either unless he returns with more resources and better equipped for the task. Perhaps his father finally finds his missing son, in the dead of night, and whisks him away like a spirit in a tale.

Either way, Luo Wenzhou is beyond distraught. This boy he took in isn't dead with a corpse he could hold and bury, or taken away by some living relative he could visit, he's just gone. There's no trace he was ever there at all, except the cat Tao Ran gave to the child to keep him company when he was at his most withdrawn. Now the cat is only guest left at Luo Wenzhou's house. Luo Wenzhou practically tears the city apart looking for him, suddenly wild, brazenly accusing city guards of harming a child.

They have no idea why. But Luo Wenzhou has an awful instinct telling him Fei Du was scared of the humans from that day, not the demons, and Luo Wenzhou suspects one of them killed Fei Du's mother and may have even caught wind of the child left alive. Maybe it was all some political assassination, orchestrated during the unexpected clash with demons so that no one would be the wiser. Fei Du was certainly decked out in nice clothes, it's possible his mom was someone important, maybe even that Fei Du was some significant heir that needed to be killed off so the threat to another's ascension would be crushed.

But eventually Luo Wenzhou can only do so much. The year passes, then another, and there's still not even a body to find. He can't find Fei Du's mothers corpse either, he couldn't even back during the incident. He saw it once when Fei Du was standing frozen in the street, then picked up Fei Du and never looked back. Someone had taken her away before the battle had ended. But aside from that peculiarity implying something more about her murder than simply a civilian caught by ravaging demons, he could uncover nothing.

No Fei Du, not even a trace. The brat didn't even leave him a letter if he'd decided to runaway himself.

Years later, near a decade passes, and Fei Du finds himself visiting the mortal realm once more. For answers about his mother, again, but this time he knows so much more. He knows someone planned for her life to end, someone from the demon realm, and used the chaos of the attack to mask it. He knows his father brought his mother to the city rampage to make her witness it, maybe to torture her with unpleasant sights, but perhaps also to put her in easy access to harms way. Fei Du still isn't sure if his father was working in tandem with the perpetrators, or also caught by surprise. And now father is asleep, locked deep in near-death by a curse. And that curse seems to be spreading, down the line, starting to hit Fei Du as well. Someone is targeting their whole family, and he intends to investigate their sloppy first attack to find traces of them that will lead to now. That will lead to rooting them out and annihilating them.

So he returns to Yan City, now a young man, dressed like the ruler of demons that he is now with his dad out of commission. Draped in elegant embroidery and long fabrics, that don't impede him because he can simply fly if the drag becomes a burden. But he's not been to the human realm in so long.

The first thing that happens, is an idiot decides to rob him.

The second thing that happens, is he uses his excessively strong powers on the poor idiot attacking him.

The third thing that happens, is the curse that's seeped into Fei Du from the unknown enemy's machinations kicks in at his draw of magic, and he collapses in pain.

And that's when Luo Wenzhou finds him, now Captain of the city guard. At the tail end, only noticing a man with a knife on the ground unconscious, and an excessively luxuriously dressed fool on his knees coughing so harshly it hurts Luo Wenzhou's ears. It takes an instant to guess the flashy peacock was being mugged, and must've been hurt by the struggle, and while he held his own enough to stop the assault... he's now past his limit.

While Luo Wenzhou hates a rich contemptuous fucker, what with all the politicians in town playing their games for the throne and leaving innocent victims in their wake (like that child years ago he knew), he isn't so heartless as to not go and at least check on a man literally coughing up blood.

And so it is, that when they reunite Fei Du is being carried by Luo Wenzhou just like all those years ago. And when his gaze focuses on that face, now that he's not the child too stunned to come back to reality but an adult who could care less about thieves and curses trying to bring him down, he's stunned at what fate brought him to. Staring unshielded, unable to put a clamp down on his unrestrained reaction that he didn't predict would overwhelm him. When he'd already planned so many actions for so many eventualities, he never expected this. And if he could have, he wouldn't have ever guessed he'd find himself gaping and staring. Unable to shield his shock.

Luo Wenzhou bites his tongue about making a joke about the man in his arms being so overcome by a handsome face, but notes in his mind it is a bit peculiar the man seems so affected by seeing him. Sure, the stranger could be into men, but this is a bit excessive even for someone meeting eyes with a sudden inexplicable attraction.

So he just settles on taking the stranger to some inn nearby, that his heavy pockets will likely have the money for, and asking for some medicine. He'll at least make sure the poor thing stops dripping blood before he leaves him.

And the stranger is quite pretty himself... Luo Wenzhou wouldn't mind being invited to stay the night, if the stranger recovers enough to feel up for rewarding him for his kindness...

But in reality, this lovely youth looks paler than death and is still shuddering from the coughs. He's going to need Luo Wenzhou to tend to him just to keep him alive through the the night. Even if the man pays an attendant to help, they might prefer to rob his well adorned corpse over struggling to keep him alive for a pathetic salary in comparison to how much his robe must cost alone, never mind the pin in his hair! Only the noble and well intentioned captain of the city guard can be trusted to nurse this beauty, without being so overcome with greed they'd instead choke the life out of him and take what's left.

No wonder he got robbed as soon as he entered the city. Luo Wenzhou's not struggling for money, his dad would help if he were truly starving, and his best friend Tao Ran is the perfect ideal of the kind of pure hearted hero who wouldn't take a piece of gold even if he had not a grain of rice in his bowl.

So Luo Wenzhou isn't overcome with a lust for the fine things in his arms, at least not the nonliving ones. But even he can feel the undercurrent urge to rip some of these nice elaborate trinkets away from the fool, who's ostentiously flaunting at this point. He hates people so materially rich they can play with other peoples lives like toys, with no concern for the law or a societal standard of respect. People who look like this use others as they please, as if no one else is even human. And Luo Wenzhou can't stand those types. The fact he can barely touch them, even with the law on his side, and they even seem to revel in how much they can abuse even if he screams to the heavens all of their cruelties.

He wonders if it'd be too forward of him to change the rich stranger's clothes once they get to the inn, into absolutely anything else. Anything that will make the very sight of him less of a screaming beacon to everyone else around, to envy or hate. To attack, rob, bristle, suspect, fear.

The young man who was staring bewildered at him before, coughs a bit more blood, finally shifts to try and wipe it away or stop the dripping, and then faints at the effort of having tried to lift his arm. Luo Wenzhou blinks down at the frail fool of a damsel, wondering what on earth possessed the fucker to come to Yan City all alone without a single attendant or bodyguard.

I actually like how HIC is killed by Unbreakable Katana. For one thing it's sort of an immovable object vs a bit more unstoppable force situation. The plot armor Gamzee has is not identical to his natural endurance. Still think it's bullcrap, but I don't think we should compare the two as Gamzee's "clown invincibility" while being convinient for writing is adressed elsewhere. Back to katana though I like that it worked like a double-edged Chekhov's gun. On one hand it was to be used in an awesome way and HIC's death made it so. On the other hand it was unbreakable and for Dave who's all about breaking swords and crowbar all about breaking jujus, I think it gave those items (and Dave) nice closure and while yes HIC was supposed to be almost indestructible, i think the combined effort of 3 god tiers and some hits from Zillyhoo hammer should be enough for the weakening to be able to harm. Especially since she died from a backstab of cherubim weapon while intending to backstab a cherub. I'd say it's a fitting end and an earned one. Gamzee's invincibility's what's bullcrap.

First few moments of Gamzee's plot crap was meant a bit for laughs, but once meta stuff takes over to be a serious, it's starts to become bullshit. Not sure what gives Dave closure if the deed was done by Roxy, not him. If it's suppose to mirror how Alpha Dave was fighting alongside Alpha Mom Rose and Roxy is now carrying the sword that would help beat her, I think it would be more fitting if all the human kids were together instead of separate. There's not much good reason for Union Jack to be around that it has to be Dirk, Dave, and Terezi have to be the ones to fight him. If you mean cutting Dirk's head off after his talk with him, then here are some posts explaining why I think Dave's talk with Dirk made it come off that Dave is a whiny little bitch and he is putting the blame on a different Bro who is not the same as him. I'm on the side that Bro wasn't meant to be abusive until Hussie saw that people love angst and decided to throw it on Dave to gain popularity. Dave bitching to Dirk about his trauma when Dirk could has lived through his own hell of growing up alone after Alpha Bro Dave died and we never saw Dirk's own relationship with his big brother, just seems unfair. Yes, they would be their guardians in the future, but they aren't and they are currently completely different people. Why else we rarely see kid Jane act like a nice, sweet lady who loves to pull pranks? I wouldn't be surprised if due to Dave's rant towards Dirk, it gives him a reason to become Ultimate Dirk that stuff like Epilogues and Homestuck^2 happened because of Dave. It wouldn't be the first time it was Dave's fault for causing a large chain of events that would ultimately lead to end of the world.

so i've accidentally reread LAL and SSS because i was doing research on kiss scenes (again) and it's been so long since i've actually read them (i don't think i've actually read them since they ended???) but my heart???????? my fucking HEART????????

gods, the flash flood still sends chills down my spine, and so does the fire. knowing what's coming doesn't change that in the least. i so badly wish i had the ability to make gifs and/or videos bc i know exactly what the CMT "next time on: Lassos and Lilies" post-episode thingies would look like and i can't share them and it's a damn shame 😭 the drama, the music, the beautifully cut together scenes...

also SSS still holds my entire fucking heart. GODS its so fucking cute, i need more sugar daddy steve because holee SHIT is it the cutest thing in the world. i love that little world you created. yu talk about such heavy things in the best kind of way, and it's the same characters as always, but i fall in love with them all over again and it's just 😭😭😭 ALSO, also this is my favorite version of clint. i love Fair Game clint, he's perfect and adorable, but SSS clint is just somethin else. you got the humor so perfectly right in this story, balanced perfectly with the shitty reality, it's one of my favorites and i'd forgotten it until just now.

OH and another also before i go: something i'm trying to do with my own story right now is showing/saying "i love you" before they actually say "i love you" and that's another reason i'm doing my research with your writing because gods DAMN you do that so well. you can FEEL how much they love each other before they ever even utter the words, that by the time they do, it just makes sense. it's a "well duh" kinda moment.

That’s what I saw when I rewatch Thor Ragnarok for the “plot” 😂

Anyway!

The flash flood and fire scenes in LAL are so intense. I worked so hard on them to bring up those like, classic western/adventure film feelings and vibes while also making it gut punch emotionally brutal for my readers. When I set out to write LAL I thought “we’re gonna hit every western trope including flood fire cattle drives a hanging a rich landowner and a whorehouse— all of it” and by god did I try to deliver on it!

And SSS- I’m not saying this lightly, I think SSS might be one of the best stories I’ve ever written. I’m honestly so proud of it. Of Stonys individual journeys, of their dating and falling in love, Tony’s issues and the way Steve is an actual knight in shining armor, BuckyNat with their own story and dynamics, Omega!Clint and how previously AWFUL he is 😂 I think especially with the pandemic SSS hit so hard on so many levels for us, with the money struggles and the loneliness and the fear and anxiety and inevitable relief… plus baby!peter just stole every single scene he showed up and that was excellent.

Doing your research in my writing is just— you have no idea how cool it is to think my writing helps someone else’s writing?? Especially since 9/10 times I’m pretty sure I have no idea what I’m doing 😂 100/100 top tier compliment, THANK YOU

I DO feel like In any media if we get to the “I love you” confession and we’re surprised/not thrilled by it, then it’s not a good story. Unless it’s an out of the blue strangers to lovers unrequited love situation, the actual love confession should feel like a “oh of course they do” moment and not in a boring sort of “saw that coming” way but in a “I can breathe again” sort of moment?

And I try really hard to SHOW it all in my fics, especially the Omegaverse or soulmate trope cos sometimes the actual love story can get rushed through as a result of the mate bond/fated lover dynamic and that’s not why we read romance! We don’t want to rush through to the love confession we want to see it in all these thousand different ways that makes those three words the most important but also sort of the most irrelevant words in the book. We don’t need to read/see/hear them, we already KNOW and when “I love you” can be honestly answered with a joyful “I know”— I mean, is there anything better than that??

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID THE TRUTH.

I admit that i enjoyed act 3 but it feels like really rushed i have so much complain with that.

The build up until act 2 was so good it give us so much premise but the final blow si meh. Sorry that i want to share thing long rant with you

1. Why the final talk is with yae, no offense to her but we need ei to explain not to mention she witness khaenriah downfall so she can give us more information, i feel like they do it for the plot armor so they can just keep dragging this

2. So many things that quite inconsistant, the shogun is show no mercy to anyone that even did a little thing outside what she think its right, how come she can still have a talk with signora, when sara is falling like that, and also there is no clarification about sara right now.

The traveler was so done at first they refuse to help thoma and ayaka at the beginning. But they seem so happy and forget everything how come they are not RAGE ( okay maybe this is to bias and personal) when this nation provide nothing about our siblings information and also why they are not mention anything about their problem in ei stroy quest. Its nonsense! She is right in front of youu, ask about your siblings, ask about khaenriah, ask about ukmown god!!. How come they can just forget like that. Also mihoyo really waste the potential about twin things i thing ei will give us so much help bcs of the sympathy that we both rn lost our twin but noooo.

3. Kokomi seem lost some brain cell, she make a very succesfull grand intro but she become meh in act 3, how come a great strategist like her let the sus sponsorship slip just bcs they are desperate, not to mention her screen time is really small and her role seem so unsignificant and it feels lile she is a plain npc.

4. The awesome world quest that we have done doesnt get any mention at all! Inazuma owe us so much with cleansing sakura, thunder sakura, tatarigami, obarashi quest. It has so much potential that yae or ei or anyone else aknowledge what traveler has been done but nooo.

cracks knuckles... i suppose it's time for my promised dissertation. interestingly enough, you touched on a lot of the main issues i had with chapter III.

i think that if i had to pin the main issue, it's a lack of overall cohesiveness? we were jumping all over the place without the chance to ever flesh things out. inazuma is a smaller cast, but i feel like we didn't get to see any of them shine. since i'm most interested in the genshin characters, i'll break down my problems by going over everyone and their (lack) of impact on the story.

was ayaka not questioned or placed under suspicion for being close to thoma before his escape? i wanted to see her broken up over her duties as they relate to the yashiro commission, paired with having someone she genuinely cares about in danger. it would've been an interesting struggle if she was forced to choose one or the other. instead she just kinda took a back seat.

speaking of thoma, i don't even have anything to say, because he just... was there? for .0001 seconds. said "lol this sucks ig" and that's about it. i know we're going to get a story for him in the future since he's a 5* but i'm not getting my hopes up 😭 then in the raiden shogun's character story, man is peachy keen! be upset with the raiden shogun! have some inner conflict! even if it's just using loaded language because he's under surveillance for going against the raiden shogun, that'd be so cool. saying something like,

"Traveler, what's with that expression? Oh please, there's nothing to worry about. We're under the Statue of the Omnipresent God's protection. Nothing bad has ever happened here." *wink*

i also don't know what to say about gorou. he was... there....... i think. what is he fighting for? what are the stakes for him? what makes him place so much trust into kokomi? i'm out of things to say about him because i don't remember anything he did or said.

kokomi... oh kokomi... i was so hyped. so excited. i thought that maybe we could see a foil to the raiden shogun. that she'd have a moment where she's forced to realize, just like her opponent, sacrifices must be made that will hurt people who will never understand why she made them. or maybe something to show her military prowess. but instead she just accepts a mysterious patron's help (?), sees her people aging like the grateful dead from JJBA, and goes oh well. that sucks. what can ya do. oh bye traveler i guess, good luck with that. ????????????? HUH... similar case to thoma where she's gonna get a character story but like. she won't be the leader of the resistance anymore. that was her whole shtick. they took her shtick away. also she forced me to interact with more NPCs whose names i've already forgotten so i'm tilted about that still.

KUJOU SARA... AN INJUSTICE. A DISGRACE. a slap to my woman loving face. the build up was there. yae miko's comments about sara probably knowing the tenryou commission is involved in shady dealings, but is choosing not to think about it. sara being forced to confront reality and challenge her adopted father with the truth. being able to blaze a new path for herself in the process. when she started running to the raiden shogun i was ultra hyped up. sara, a devotee to the shogun for so long, was about to see her god interacting with the same people who led inazuma to this awful state. how would she react? would she stay ignorant, like yae miko so coyly said, choosing to look away in favor of following her god's footsteps? or would she be forced to recognize the raiden shogun isn't as divine as she once thought, and challenge her belief system?

we open the door to see the raiden shogun. the loading screen ensues. the camera pans to the ominous room, clouded in darkness, hinting at the ominous confrontation that is to come. the music takes a serious timbre. and then...

well fuck that potential character arc i guess. (we still don't know what sara made of any of this since she poofed out of existence from the story at this point)

kazuha also was handed a similar treatment. we've been with him for a while longer now. he is our introduction into inazuma, the one who first gets us emotionally involved by regaling us with the bittersweet tale of friendship that led him to becoming a wanted criminal. a kind soul who loves nature yet was dealt a cruel hand by fate, forced to watch his home nation turn into a hostile place, where his dear friend ultimately perished as a result. we get the scene with his friend's vision lighting back up. he parries a block from the raiden shogun, in the same area where his friend was killed by her. the parallels. the drama. except this time, he wasn't too late. he protected the traveler where he "failed" to protect his friend in the past. did he feel redemption at this? or was it a bittersweet reminder of what could've been?

WELL i guess we'll never know because we didn't get to talk to him again 😭 idk who got a bait and switch worse, him or sara. jesus christ mihoyo.

then we have signora. why is the raiden shogun talking to her? does she know about the gnosis being taken, and if she doesn't, what was her plan to get it from the archon? what does she think about scaramouche? and oh, okay, we're fighting here now. good fight + god tier music. pog pog. okay, now we've beaten her up, and raiden shogun wyd— wait no not signora her lore is still on CUPS not YET raiden shogun and— ah she's dead. okay. non nerds who didn't read artifact lore are going to know nothing about her. signora has such an interesting story, and yet... well. ok.

then we get raiden shogun redemption (?) arc. i was hype for this as well, though at that point, idk why i bothered being hype. i knew they were gonna do a cute power of friendship something or another, and i'm good with that, so long as it's executed well. what i was envisioning was like seven different buffs to correspond with the seven different visions, the dreams of those whose ambitions were stolen serving as the spear to penetrate the raiden shogun's heart of stone. maybe a hydro vision giving us extra healing for a time, with the voice acting over it being like,

"Even if the rest of the world forgets us, let our will carry you through this one final time. Succeed where we couldn't, Traveler."

so on and so forth.

but instead we got— you get the idea at this point. why bother spelling it out anymore.

at that point i was surprised the raiden shogun didn't go "oopsie woopsie!! we made a fucky wucky!!!" because that was the vibe i was getting. i love ei, don't get me wrong, but i wanted to see her challenged with what she had done to inazuma in the past year. maybe meeting NPC #2345259 who lost her sister to the vision decree or something, reminding ei of the love she held for her sister... being forced to come to terms with the extent of what she's done in pursuit of eternity.

anyway. please for the love of god mihoyo hire better writers for the main story. that is all i ask. thank you.

Spotlight: Ties That Bind

Q) Give us a run down of your cont! What's it about, what's it called, what's it like?

Ties That Bind is a humanformers-based original continuity which is part Science Fiction and part Alternate History where the invasion of Quintessons and introduction of their technology to Earth in 1920 sets the world and humankind on a completely different trajectory. The active narrative spans a period from 1920 to 2070, covering the First and Second Quintesson Wars, the interplanetary Antillan War (leading to the creation of Unicron on Mars) and the Great War which involves the Autobots, Decepticons and Functionist stalwarts, and how it affects the characters.

The cast is pretty sprawling and the narrative is mostly centred around human drama with bits of humor interspaced and a dash of horror (mostly centred around how the previous government often chose to utilize the technology left behind from the Quintesson Wars to create new systems of oppression, which affected many of the characters, in the name of worldwide rebuilding efforts).

Q) What characters take the lead here? Any personal favorites?

I will admit to this continuity being very much heavy on the relationship between Old Bastards  Optimus Prime and Megatron, which is given considerable weight as they were best friends who had known each other since childhood and were deeply intrinsic to each other’s growths as individuals, which makes it all the worse when guilt and betrayal enter the party. Despite being captains in two corners of this battle, there’s a part of them that just cannot let go of their pasts together and they need to reconcile with how this will affect their agenda (Megatron) and how they lead their team (Optimus) who don’t necessarily share their history.

Starscream, a Cold Construct in a toxic working relationship with Megatron with whom he is hiding a dark secret, who struggles to balance the underhanded viciousness he believes he needs to gain power and his innate desire from his Senate days to make the world a better place. 

Windblade, a Camien native who fights her government’s apathy concerning the situation on Earth which they see as unsalvageable compared to their more Utopian society. 

Prowl, a Cold Construct raised from childhood to be a cop in a police state, who finds out that he was brainwashed several times  to ensure his obedience and efficacy as a government asset and is now working to reclaim some semblance of the humanity he was never allowed to feel and figure out how much of him is who he really is and how much is programming.

Hound, a sheltered Beastman who joined the fight to ensure that Beastmen the world over would have the same rights he did in his homeland of Shetland Isle, but is forcefully stripped of his humanity and faced with his animal side during the war and has to relearn what personhood means amid his trauma.

Q) Is there a bigger point to this, like a theme or some catharsis? Or is it just fluffy fun?

God with the amount of time I spent sleepless trying to figure out how the logistics of this or the semantics of that were supposed to work in universe, I cannot for the life of me say it’s fluffy fun, but I can’t exactly say it hasn’t been pretty engaging either!

There’s elements of war being messy for everyone involved where there doesn’t seem to be a clear line between friend and foe at times, but I think for most part it prescribes to  Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s belief that people are inherently good, but are corrupted by the evils of society. Despite its dark themes (Including but not limited to child abuse, torture, illegal experimenation  and brainwashing), love and friendships do prevail, kindness does beget kindness, found families are made, even the smallest actions matter, and things do get better because there are people on both sides who genuinely want to, and strive to make it better.

With Cold Constructs and Beastmen, it also delves heavily into what it means to be human; to have agency and personhood.

There’s also a strong undercurrent of taking responsibility for one’s actions, even if they were made with the best of intentions (Avoidance of this is what eats up Starscream and Megatron from the inside, and what Starscream eventually embraces).

Q) How long have you been working on it?

There’s two answers to this!

I’ve had a Humanformers-related universe going all the way back to 2007 around the time the first Bayformers came out---basically I had a choice between learning to draw cars or draw people (I was an anthro artist back then) and I immediately chose people.

The 2007 draft however had no worldbuilding or connective storylines and was mostly a fun little venture into character design and practice which were actually instrumental to me experimenting and learning how to draw humans properly.

I left the fandom for about a decade and when I came back to it in late 2020 around September via the War for Cybertron series on Netflix, I immediately got hooked on the 2005 IDW comics I missed out on and wanted to get around to updating my old designs as well find a way to translate several of the concepts I wanted to explore in a human sense, so the 2020 update became its own full-fledged original continuity with detailed worldbuilding and history.

Say hello to my workspace! I’ve been working exclusively on the Ipad Pro since late 2016, which is fantastic because I can basically whip up concepts and sketches on the go anywhere. Nowhere is too out of bounds to work on TTB!

Q) YESSSSS alright I must admit this is one of my favorite Rungs, and certainly my fave within TTB. Amazing. Phew, anyway. Where did you draw inspiration from? What canons, what other fiction, what parts of real life?

TTB was initially conceived as a faithful retelling of the IDW 2005 narrative before it was transformed into its own continuity and as such, it borrows heavily from concepts and mirrored plot lines introduced in that run! I chose to have the series inspired off it specifically for the amount of history and worldbuilding it introduced to the franchise.

Anime like Gunslinger Girl and Beastars inspired the depictions of Cold Constructs, especially the more harrowing aspects of their upbringing as government assets instead of children, and Beastmen (Beastformers) in TTB.

I haven’t depicted the world itself in my art all too much, but the architecture from Tiger and Bunny, which has sort of a futuristic Art Deco feel to it, is what you’d usually see in major cities. There is an in-universe reason for that---with a Point Of Divergence set in 1920 followed by 25 years (an entire generation) of progress basically being kicked to the curb due to the Quintesson wars, mankind was basically in a time-locked bubble until the end of the wars, and by then their heroes were 1920s-style rebellion leaders, which lead to 1920s fashion (especially among the Manual Working Class---Megatron, Jazz and Optimus all rock 1920s fashion at some point of their lives) and architecture being celebrated and retained as sort of a reminder of how things were before The Invasion. This anime’s background design is also where I adopted the tiered system TTB’s major metropolises are often built on (with each tier being designated to a different working class) from.

The main artistic style itself is a love letter to 90s cartoons, in particular Gargoyles’ deep and drama-driven character narratives and designs as well as The Centurions’ take on body armor logistics.

I also take inspiration, especially armor-wise, from the characters’ given heritage and background. As an example, Hotrod who is depicted as Irish has the flames on his armor done up with Celtic knots. Welsh aristocrat Mirage’s armor bears olden knight-style filigree and has his Autobot logo designed as a coat of arms. Indonesian Soundwave’s armor and Decepticon logo takes cues from Batik and Wayang Kulit while their mask is based off the Barong.

Q) They are absolutely gorgeous! Show off something you're really proud of, a particular favorite part of your cont.

The worldbuilding in general! Most Humanformers I’ve seen tend to treat it like a fun exercise which it is and is definitely valid, but I found myself wanting a full-fledged world to lose myself in and I sought to try and make that world myself by drafting a detailed history and timeline of events which would affect ongoing narratives, having indepth worldbuilding to include almost all societal aspects of the universe and  expanding on the concept of Beastmen and Cold Constructs existing in a human setting.

I’m not so secretly proud of the research and diversity included to make the cast look like the multicultural, globally-based team that they were meant to be instead of being locked to a single region! My original draft from 2007 was, to put it simply, quite culturally monolithic and I wanted to improve on that aspect with TTB.

I’m also proud that I’ve kept to it this far! I’m a notoriously flaky person jumping from one idea/fandom to another and to have kept at this continuity for the better part of ten months is honestly a personal feat.

Art-wise, this scene depicting a young Megatron working alongside Terminus and Impactor (cameo by @weapon-up-wallflower​‘s OC Missit!)  is definitely one of my favorites since it helps build up the world they live in and plays to familial bonds and comfort found in one another despite their less than ideal circumstances.

Q) Everything has come together so beautifully, you absolutely should be proud. What other fan canons do you love and why? Would you like to see them interviewed?

I am dying to hear more from @iscaredspider​’s Sparkpulse continuity! Her designs are MIND-BLOWINGLY GORGEOUS and I want to hear more about what inspired her to work on it!

One of the funnier elements in the risk of applying reality to fantasy is that when you do it, you end up with 40K more optimistic than Star Wars

And there is a very simple reason for that. In 40K it's possible (though vanishingly unlikely and relying on 'central named character, especially Space Marine but not always' tier plot armor) for a random schmuck to banish a shard of an eldritch abomination by sheer average Joe/Jane/Jinx determination. 40K, like the blend of religious and elements of cosmic horror it is, applies this with a merry abandon to Chaos and the C'Tan, the big divine figures. And even to the Emperor, as he wouldn't be a rotting corpse on a throne if this was a setting that fawned over its deities.

In Star Wars, OTOH, you are Jedi or Sith or Force-Sensitive and thus the universe hubs around you and your relationship to the Force....or you're SOL. And that's the entire nature of the setting. Too much of a reality-based view here would turn the Force into an inferior ripoff of Chaos minus the cool space demons and the blanket set of cool Psyker powers (of which the bargain basement version are the extreme Force powers of Star Wars and the really powerful are straight up physical gods).

So for all that 40K is more gloriously wretched and terrible at its various levels, it's a setting that allows for a paradoxical kind of optimism relative to the Star Wars universe.

Benji is at a god tier level dumbass (both derogatory and affectionate). And he somehow survived Felix's stomach not once but twice. His plot armor stat is over 9000. A full shounen protagonist in a world settled on horror. Love that.

I AM SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED THE SERIES! And I am so glad to hear that you warmed up to Garion. I just—I love him so much?? Little farm boy who missed his farm so much, but was willing to take on the weight of the (quite literal) world and was positive nothing was going to work out and he DID IT ANYWAY!

Plus, he’s got a giant sword that occasionally bursts into flames? And he knows how to fly? How was I not supposed to be a little in love with him??? I am a broken record on this front, but he gets so much better in The Malloreon. Grown adult, full king Garion with a bit of self-confidence is top tier, I am telling you.

And you are totally right. It would have been so easy for the side plots to get trudged down in plot, but Ce’Nedra raising her army never really got boring? (At least to me, but also I sorta want to kiss Ce’Nedra as much as I want to kiss Garion. So, it’s entirely possible that had something to do with it.) I love the Queens, too! Broken record time! They get even cooler next series. The world building of this entire series just—to this day, it makes me want to scream. Everything is so thought out! Every kingdom is so different! There are religions and cultures and traditions and actual knights in shining armor and I could talk about this for-goddamn-ever. And that end? Agh, get on this level other fantasy series. With your insane finishes and ridiculous overarching plots and there’s something so wonderful in the almost simple way this all ended? God. God.

When Garion and Ce’Nedra are sitting at the wedding and he, like, leans over and whispers that he loves her? THIRTEEN YEAR OLD LAURA ATE THAT SHIT UP. IT ALTERED HER ENTIRE WORLDVIEW. IT CHANGED HER ROMANTIC VIEWS FOR YEARS TO COME.
