so i've been thinking about this since it aired.

i propose it's 'what for to yearn' -- 'to' as opposed to 'do you' or 'd'you' -- because a) thats what it sounds like and b) it makes more sense.

'what for do you yearn' would make internal sense if it meant 'why do you yearn' like saying 'what for' instead of 'why' sometimes, right? but 'why do you yearn' makes 0 sense in context of the rest of the song.

it would ALSO make sense internally if it meant 'what do you yearn for' BUT this is one of those things where word order is important, and i dont think he's talking to geralt for the chorus, but himself or the audience.

"what for to yearn" = what is the act of yearning for, what good is it, why yearn in the first place, etc, watch that butcher BURRRRRRN

i actually enjoyed a lot of twn s3 but i see it repeated fairly often that it followed the books fairly closely (or at least more closely than s2) but listen. having freshly reread time of contempt, in my opinion, s3 somehow followed the books LESS than other seasons.

s1 and s2 were both often working with original content in between book canon scenes. but s3, as much as it did seem to go beat for beat following time of contempt's plot... somehow ends up changing almost every single plot point in some way.

yennefer travels with ciri and geralt together. geralt is pissed at yennefer and doesn't speak to her for a whole year. ciri wounds (maybe kills?) elves at shaerrawedd. yennefer calls ciri "ugly one" without the follow up context of their "you're already pretty" convo. geography is ?? travel is ?? the politics is flattened out to redania vs nilfgaard. the scoia'tael conflict is flattened out. aplegatt's story gets repurposed with none of the actual consequences that made that story in the books have an emotional impact because there is none of the same geopolitical plot.

tissaia stands with and frees vilgefortz out of love for him instead of standing against both the genocide and warfare of the northern kings and the imperialism of nilfgaard. the coup plot seems to be a last minute decision by philippa based on what?? who knows!! the last vilgefortz joins emhyr in nilfgaard??? yennefer calls the conclave and heads up the lodge????

so yes, it pulls some lines and scenes directly from the books and nods to them fairly often but in no way was s3 a closer or more faithful adaptation of the books than s2. it truly, fully misses something huge in almost every story beat.

it really feels like the twn writers read geraskier fics because there's too many fanon things that ended up in s3: Bi Jaskier, Geralt communicating his feelings and thanking him, "Jask", people recognising Jaskier not only as a bard but as a viscount and being in awe of him, his proven competence, etc. Maybe they finally realised we don't like him being the butt of the joke and the comic relief, maybe my expectations for this season were so low that I was pleasantly surprised, but I don't believe in coincidences. The conversations were just too good for the writers to not have sought inspiration elsewhere. We know some of them hate the books and there's fics out there that are masterpieces, I wouldn't be surprised.

ended up going with geraskier for this one and I feel like this should have another 5k of backstory to fully make sense but hopefully it’s good as it is too!

They've been walking side by side for hours and Geralt has yet to take his eyes off Jaskier. At first, it seems like the bard is oblivious to the yellow eyes piercing into his side, but it's only a matter of time before he glances over as well, once, twice, until eventually he huffs in annoyance.

"Don't look at me like that," he mutters and walks faster, though not so fast that Geralt wouldn't be able to keep up.

"Like what?"

"Like you don't recognize me anymore."

Geralt drops his gaze. He says nothing - doesn't know what to say. Because the truth of the matter is... Jaskier is right. He doesn't recognize him, not anymore, not when the man in front of him feels like the shell of a bard Geralt used to know. There's a haunted look in his eye, a hollowness to him, like something is missing...

"You have... changed."

"I'd hope so. It's been decades, since we last saw each other."

"That's not..." Geralt sighs.

"Spit it out already."

"It isn't a good thing."

Jaskier laughs. He tosses his head back and laughs with his whole body, but the sound rings hollow in the air that surrounds them. Geralt flinches.

“And whose fault do you believe it is, darling?”

When Jaskier stops laughing, it’s as sudden as it was when he started. He doesn’t move anymore and the blue of his eyes is dull as their gazes meet. Geralt doesn’t want to look at him, doesn’t want to see him like this. He finds that he’s desperate to remember Jaskier as he used to be, to remember the youthful joy that used to be in his expression.

Jaskier holds his gaze steadily, though, and Geralt knows that if he looked away, he’d just make matters worse.

(Is it even possible, for this to be any worse?)

“Yeah,” Jaskier breathes out after a moment, when Geralt doesn’t respond. “I thought so.”

With that, he puts a clear end to the conversation. He walks forward once more and for the first time, it is Geralt’s job to follow and follow he does - all while aching for something that is long gone, despite the reminder of it being right in front of him.

Not just any something, Geralt realizes in that moment.

It's the heart, that is missing. Jaskier's heart.
