The Ordeal of Being Known (M, 146637)

When Auror Potter is anonymously cursed with silence by being forced to hide his own voice inside his mind, there's unfortunately only one person in the country with the qualifications to fix it: Certified and Licensed Healer Legilimens, Draco Malfoy, specialist in Mind Curses and Afflictions. It's obviously a terrible idea, a disaster waiting to happen, but Draco's never been able to back down from a challenge... especially from Potter.

Features fuzzy cartoon slippers, devious house elves, 90s music, and lots—LOTS—of memories. Ron is annoyingly hot, Hermione sees right through you, Harry is a powerful idiot, and Draco is a reclusive masochist that would buy an entire city if it would make a kid happy. (And Pansy is "5'2, I wanna dance with you, and I'm sophisticated fun.")

This fic is how I discovered Lou in the first place; their first fic, a novel-length story with an amazing plot! The premise is certain to take you in immediately and the way Lou incorporated Harry’s memories into the story is so clever and interesting! It incorporates canon in an entirely unique way, one that works so well that it feels like Harry Potter was simply a premise for this fic! Fair warning that this might make you lose sleep (but then, it’s totally worth it!) Each character has depth and little mannerisms that make them realistic! Draco’s voice in particular is witty and funny, the descriptions are tainted with his emotions, his feelings, it’s so entertaining! Oh and the pining, the pining! It’s out of this world! The entire story is so well-written as to become unforgettable – the dance scene in particular lives freely in my mind, playing on a loop <3 And it’s so cleverly done that you could read it a million times and always find new things to love, new layers to discover!

Weapon of Choice (T, 25641)

Sir Malfoy is in need of a sword. The blacksmith isn’t supposed to ask why.

Medieval fantasy stories are my favourite, so it’s no wonder that I fell in love with this story! It has all the best threads of an epic fairy tale, with magic and intrigue and romance all woven together into a masterpiece! Lou weaves an entire world before our eyes, giving new colours to characters we discover in new lights! The way the plot unfolds is so clever and full of suspense, I couldn’t put the story down!

This Heart on My Sleeve (M, 1171)

It’s a hopeless ordeal, all at once: I am never going to be rid of him; I am never going to have him; it is always, always going to hurt.

This short story contains just the right balance of angst and pining! Each sentence is beautifully crafted, and oh-so-poetic, it’s a pleasure to read it, each time I find a new detail to focus on! The alternating POVs turns this scene into a cinematographic experience, it really feels like the camera changes angles and we see the scene in an entirely new light!

After the events at the Manor, Harry and Draco find themselves stranded in the countryside with a broken wand and Death Eaters on their tail. It was all very familiar, except for the Malfoy part.

The work Harry does is justifiable. It’s justice. He works for his country, and his country is a republic—the magical side, anyway. It’s not laudable work, it’s not work he’s proud of, but it’s necessary work. Harry has always taken the necessary jobs that no one else has the stomach for. It’s just that he’s never deciphered a kill sheet and seen Draco Malfoy’s name on it.

Pausing my RWRB reading (I have an ask about firstprince fics too and I’m working on it!) to answer this, which is the nudge I’ve needed. I’ve done this for Dramione before (under 5k), but I especially love tempting readers to Drarry.

Short works are the unsung heroes of fandom. They don’t get enough love, which makes me so sad, because you definitely don’t always need 100k to deliver a stunning story. These are your bedtime stories, your palate cleansers, your individual serving sizes of serotonin. It’s okay to enjoy these even if you only read slow burn 100k+ fics, I promise. Live a little!

This is a sampling of some amazing favorites, but I’m always reading new things and will add to it regularly. If you find something you love, I know the author would love to hear it, and so would I! Take a deep dive into their work to find other gems.

Pissing for England by @moonflower-rose. M, 2k. They're sharing a flat as part of an Auror training exercise, but if Ron can't learn to piss more quietly, they may not make it out alive.

Aching with Want by @nv-md. E, 2k. Draco loves Harry, and would do anything to make him happy. When the cold wakes Draco in the middle of the night, he gives Harry everything he wants...everything he's too scared to ask for.

Obliviously Ever After by @gloivy. M, 2k. Harry Potter isn’t gay. He just likes to shag Draco Malfoy now and again. OR: Five times Harry obliviously denies the feelings blooming between himself and Draco, and the one time he admits it.

“Harry’s just fixated,” Hermione said absently, “They do that, the two of them.”

Truth be told by @tenthousandyearsx. E, 2.3k. Playing Truth or Dare with the Slytherins had been a terrible idea. Being pinned against a wall by Malfoy while still on bloody Veritaserum was... well, hot as hell, and more than Harry thought he'd ever get, to be perfectly honest.

Just Talking by @cavendishbutterfly. T, 2.6k. Harry's been trying and failing to talk to Draco for ages. It's hard, since he fancies him. It's easier to text about it. Even when he's right across the table at pub night. Who knows? If Harry's funny enough, maybe someday Draco will like him back.

But in this moment, after Harry had covered Draco with the shield, Harry went absolutely feral.

Working in the International Auror division doesn't exactly lend itself to Harry finding love or having any sort of relationship, what with all the unsociable hours and catching bad guys and never being in one location for more than a few days. Not to mention the permanent fixture of his partner, Malfoy.

So, how does a song about lost love end up being the thing that helps Harry find love, in the location he least expected it?

Waited for This by @phdmama. E, 3.1k. Malfoy’s been working out, Harry ruminates, as he stands by the kitchen sink and drinks his first coffee of the day in preparation to go open the cafe. Probably doing his squats. Harry should ask him about his routine. Except then Malfoy might think Harry has been staring at his ass. Which he definitely has not been. It’s just… hard to miss when Malfoy is bent over the display case unloading his muffins and mini pies and cookies and whatnot.

Harry is only drooling over the croissants, not Malfoy and his posterior. And biceps. And eyes.

I Fall On Grass by tackytiger. T, 3.1k. Harry loves his garden, and he loves his sons, and he also loves— Well, he definitely feels something for Draco, who is currently distractingly topless under a pear tree. The language of flowers isn't much good when it comes to big declarations, though; Harry needs to find the words to tell Draco just exactly what he's been feeling all these years.

Market Saturdays by @iota. M, 3.2k. In which Harry is an accidental part-time cheesemonger, Draco is an organic farmer and they fall in love. Not an AU.

I Swear I'll Keep You With Me by @dodgerkedavra. E, 3.2k. Harry Potter doesn't mean to drop the Snitch in Malfoy Manor. In order to get it back, he makes an Unbreakable Vow to keep Draco Malfoy with him. It's the chandelier's fault, really.

I wanted to tell you that I recently read Away Childish Things by Lettered and I loved it. This left me wondering, do you know of other drarrys who talk about the mistreatment Harry suffered under the Dursleys? I think it's very interesting to see the consequences of childhood abuse growing up and how someone (Draco in this case) can help heal that.

5. something I see a lot in fics and love

hmmmm... this is hard to narrow down!! so here's a few things I've been enjoying in hp fics I've read lately!

harry potter who is just so fucking earnestly in love. like, he's tripping over his feet so he can hold the door open for draco and looking at him with big heart eyes from across the pub. harry's got draco's order memorized from that takeout place he loves and he's been pining for draco for years in such an embarrassing way and all his friends are rolling their eyes and placing bets on when harry will finally make a fucking move.

adult ron weasley taking after his mother!! he makes delicious food and makes people scarves and shows his love through his actions!!

draco being absolutely rocked when he finds out that harry is queer! especially when harry is confident and completely unashamed of his sexuality. also throat goat harry

magic being tangible in some way!! like, a strong spell giving off the smell of ozone, being able to feel it in someone's hands, everyone's magic having a unique vibe.

harry as the ultimate dad. like, that dude 100% has so many complicated feelings about family and his kid(s) would be everything to him.

9. a ship that isn't your OTP but that you enjoy

I've been dipping into alllll kinds of ships lately. I love to just go look at individual ship tags on a03 and read the stuff with the highest kudos and then some of the most recent fics. I think you gotta do both to understand the ship!! here's some I've been vibing with lately (also realizing how many of these are drarry+someone else hahaha)

harry/draco is my otp BUT harry/ron and harry/ron/hermione are tied for second. that's harry's family!! they were his first friends and the first people to show him love and they literally went through war together. they know each other!! two favorite harry/ron fics of mine are Sun Kissed by @static-abyss and A tangled mess by @orange-peony! two harry/ron/hermione favorites are nineteen years later by wendydarlings and try to fix you by @maesterchill!

snarry - I was sooooo not into this in my early fandom days because so much of the ship stuff I saw was underage teacher/student stuff and that's very much not my thing. the first dip into this ship was actually through @writcraft's harry/draco/severus fic, A Life Worth Remembering, which is almost a complete subversion: Severus gets de-aged to 25 through a potions accident and has to stay with draco and harry, who are middle-aged and in an established relationship. its a gigantic change for everyone involved and the way their all find their way to each other is sooooooo good. from there I read all their snarry stuff. one of their other snarry fics I love is How We Were Warriors. I've actually been back into this ship the past few weeks and have loved On the Deficiencies of Translation Spells and old fires and phantom limbs by @liladiurne, as well as A Turn of the Page and Severus’s Story (or, A Hero’s Tale) by avioleta!

neville/harry and harry/draco/neville - I think about @kittycargo's Love to Give soooooo often. also absolutely love When it Returns by @academicdisasterfic and Touch Your Lips Just So I Know by @saxamophone!!

harry/draco/charlie - everyone go read Licurici by @lou-isfake and tell me you aren't a changed man!!!

ron/draco/harry. I can't even begin to talk about this one because we'd be here for a million years!!

20. your very first fandom!

I started doing irl fandom things for harry potter with my mom and sister when I was a little baby (I learned to read with the harry potter books!!) but my first solo (and almost exclusively online) fandom was the the teen titans!! I was obsessed with the marv wolfman and george perez comics from the 80s and completely lost my shit when they announced the teen titans animated series. that show cancellation still hurts 😭

Drarry Fic Rec: Part Seventeen

Running On Air by @tinyhistory 74,880 words, T

Draco Malfoy has been missing for three years. Harry is assigned the cold case and finds himself slowly falling in love with the memories he collects.

Like the Son Holds the Moon by @lou-isfake 49,458 words, M

Narcissa Malfoy is missing. Harry has no idea why the Unspeakables want him tagging along on the investigation, but he's not complaining. His job has never been this interesting.

All Roads by @korlaena 36,636 words, M

Draco hates his job at the Prophet. He hates it even more when he’s assigned to write an article on Harry Potter, who left the country three years ago after their falling out. Draco doesn’t want to face the truth about himself, but he’s stuck between Harry and his duty, and he’s out of options.

The theme here is probably missing people, magical disappearance, or losing sight of someone important. But I think the stories in this Set are really centered around finding something, about rediscovering each other, and about coming home.

'Running On Air' is an absolute classic, which you have very likely already read, but it may be due for a re-read. I found it calm and decelerated, embodying the feeling of a cold case. I adored the magical elements in 'Like the Son Holds the Moon' and the way that Harry's seemingly desaturated life comes into sharp focus with Draco back in it. 'All Roads' doesn't linger on the missing person part, though their reunion causes Draco to realize he has been missing out. Rekindling their relationship feels gentle yet loaded.

Overall, these stories have a slow-paced and intimate tonality. Funnily enough, they all begin with a job assignment but ultimately deal with characters realizing that they are unhappy in their current circumstances. Something wasn't right, something was missing ... and so Harry and Draco find their way to each other.

(I’m not a big crier over fics. Maybe three or four have made me cry this year. This one made me lose it. I think the thing that stands out to me is the visceral capture of emotion. I literally can’t function when I think about it. 12/10 would cry again.)

(I might be cheating since I’m still savoring The Brightest Constellation of Our Souls but I’m including it because it is Peak Drarry Romance. TheCouchSofa always has this intensely brilliant characterization. Harry is heartbreakingly oblivious. Draco is prickly and about as subtle as a brick over pining for Harry. This also features depression!Harry, which has gotta be one of my favorite Harrys. She writes depressed Harry with such delicacy, handling the ins and outs of mental illness and trauma with care, but also making it fucking funny. Favorite scene so far: Harry very casually slipping into conversation that he’s bisexual after he’s been traveling with Draco for an absurd amount of time without mentioning it. And Draco’s ensuing reaction. 12/10 will continue swooning.)

(Told through jumps between the past and the present, I adore the way toomuchplor depicts the everyday romance of an established relationship. Too often romance is delegated to big displays of affection, when I think much of romance is in the mundane, routine moments. Listening to your partner share about their day is romantic. Making routine breakfast and coffee is romantic. The intimacy of having an ongoing inside joke about a cat name is unbearably romantic to me. These are the small, everyday moments that the foundations of grand romances are built upon, and this fic was a love note to those moments.)

(it's a classic H/D fic that preserves Draco's prickly personality while still showing him reforming in a very realistic way. It's a slow-burn—Harry isn't really in the first half at all, and when he does show up he's still very suspicious of Draco—but as Draco shows his (new) true colors, Harry can't help that his suspicions turn to curiosity (one of my favorite tropes with reformed Draco fics) especially with the somewhat forced proximity they find themselves in that slowly turns into voluntary and frequent proximity. To me, maybe because of the slow burn, it seems like a very realistic depiction of how Draco could reform himself and how Harry can turn his suspicions into curiosity and eventually more to form a healthy relationship together.)

My Ultimate Reclist

Hi Hello it’s been 4 years now since I came back to the fandom and started reading fics again. I thought I would do a reclist with my all time favorites. It’s gonna be rather long, so bear with me. It contains mostly classics and fics everybody know but it can be useful for new people in the fandom. I’ve read thousands of fics but it’s the ones that stuck with me the most. It is in no particular order.

The Miseducation of Draco Malfoy by @magpiefngrl (37600 words, rated E)

Zacharias Smith writes a tell-all about the D.A. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy are not happy about it.

Ooooh I love everything she writes since I've been back in the fandom and this one didn't disappoint. Draco in this one is just so endearing discovering the muggle world! He's adorable. And I loved Harry falling in love with him as he watches him, honestly I fell in love a little too. Her writing is always very immersive and just top notch? Perfect? I can't praise this fic enough. I think it's also a good one if you just started reading Drarry.

Charlie wanted Harry, but he’d never planned on having him. He’d never planned on Draco Malfoy, either. He hadn’t planned on anything but living out his days in Romania, with his friends and his dragons and his safe, peaceful distance.

Apparently, it wasn’t a very popular plan.

This is a story about crumbs and flickers and roots, running away and coming home; about falling in love without meaning to (twice), and having truly good friends, and the mutually revealing recognition between two people in love with the same man.

This was one of the most beautiful thing I've ever read. At first I was very reluctant to read it because I am so protective of Harry and Draco you know? I wanted to keep them to myself and didn't see myself share them with another character. But then Charlie came in and knocked out all my preconceived notions. I fell in love with him and his voice instantly. I was sucked in by the prose and the feels. So many feelings that everyone has. It made me think of polyamour in a whole new way and I adored it. Please please if you haven't, read it. It is so worth it.

A Descent into Delicious Delirium by J_amethyst (27273 words, rated M)

Harry makes a few piss-poor decisions. Malfoy’s still a rich prick.

The lesson to be learned here: Don’t engage in a disastrous game of chicken. Unless, of course, you enjoy the idea of a naked photoshoot, and the entire Wizarding World believing you get off on Malfoy.

I'm sorry but this is not ok, I see no one talking about this fic ever and it is SO GOOD? The prose immediately sucked me in from the start they have a way of writing that is very poetic? And weirdly I liked that Harry and Draco don't speak much?! I mean they spoke but not to say many things. They're playing around things all the time. And it adds SO MUCH TENSION like I could cut myself with it. Idk it was just brilliant. Everything was brilliant. I also loved that it was mainly focused on Harry and Draco. So. Go read it right this instant because this fic deserves so much love.

Lettered is my favorite author of all time. There I said it. So of course I loved this fic. It was so heart-wrenching. Draco is a mess. Harry is in denial. It just squeezed my heart and then released it and make it swell. The end is beautiful. I loved the auror training. I loved everything. It's a masterpiece as everything lettered writes. (Yes I fangirl on the daily at her writing and wish I was her and also the keyboard she puts her finger on. Marry me? thank you)

My god this one is wonderful. Harry is the sweetest and broke my heart. The slow realization on Draco's part is so good to see. It made my cry and I loved Harry even more after reading this. And Draco, my heart broke for him too. The end was so perfect I smiled like an idiot. This fic is a treasure and a gift and I will cherish it for a long time.

He Who Must Not Be Normal by @letteredlettered (40913 words, rated E)

Potter has fame and fortune and posh clothes and all he wants is a simple life. Draco has a flat and a cat and a steady job and all he wants is a complicated life.

Which makes you think this story has something exciting like body-swapping, but it doesn’t.

Instead it has Indian takeaway and a blue jumper and people wanting a whole lot of what they can’t have, discovering themselves as they discover each other

Ok let’s talk serious business. THIS FIC LADIES AND GENTS it has to be one of my favorite of all time. Draco is so endearing to me with his simple life, and Harry is a mess, and it hurts, hurts, hurts in every way. It felt so wrong to me, but then it became right and everything clicked into place and it works and it’s incredible. I adored it, it is so brilliant. Please give it a read you won’t regret it. Please read all other fics she writes because every fics of hers is amazing you will do yourself a favor.

Harry Potter, how does Draco Malfoy hate thee? Let me count the ways.

It was a very fun and very charming read. I laughed a little too much at Draco's obliviousness, very unreliable narrator. I love that Harry just knew and went for it even when Draco was such a tough nut to crack. He was just so sure that he hated him! Oh Draco my sweet child. They were adorable. Read it without worry.

In the Hand by aideomai (28470 words, rated T)

Two months after Harry went missing, when Hermione was frantic with fear and panic and sleep deprivation, Draco Malfoy cornered them outside the Great Hall before breakfast.

Another amazing author. This was just so freakin creative. I loved all the versions of Harry and Draco in this Drarryverse lol. Each of them were different and believable. It made me want to read a fic for each version. Anyway this was brilliant.

Far from the tree by aideomai (112572 words, rated E)

The arrival of Harry Potter’s children—snapped back in time, the children themselves guessed, twenty or so years—was the most interesting thing to happen at Hogwarts for years.

Gosh I love this fic. The reunion scene in the forest will remain imprinted in my head for a long time. My heart ached for Draco so much. But then when the reveal happens I loved seeing the older versions of Harry and Draco and their interactions with the younger ones. Perfect writing and perfect ending to a perfect fic.

“Dad says” by GallaPlacidia (39219 words, not rated)

Eleven-year-old Scorpius starts writing to Harry. Harry starts to fall in love with Draco through his portrayal in his son's letters.

Featuring an extremely remorseful Draco living with muggles and working at a second-hand book shop, an isolated Harry, and a Scorpius who's dreading going to Hogwarts because he knows he'll be bullied there.

I adored Scorpius in this and the relationship he develops with Harry. This fic was just adorable for me. And when something ends with "All was well" then I'm just a sucker for it! I loved this fic and honestly I could rec all GallaPlacidia's fics so please go read them all!

Soup-pocalypse and The Great Curry Cataclysm by SquadOfCats (104357 words, rated E)

Eleven years after the war, Draco Malfoy leads a quiet, boring, and perfectly respectable life, thanks very much. Or, at least he does, until a sudden and very unexpected veela awakening causes him to throw soup all over Harry Potter in the middle of the Ministry cafeteria.

This one is simply HILARIOUS. I laughed so much at the cafeteria scene. I usually don’t like creature fics much but this one was great I highly recommend.

Grounds for Divorce by @tepre (122217 words, rated E)

Malfoy finds a coin. Harry finds a letter.

A story about histories, a story about families. A story about a lemon tree somewhere in Upper Egypt.

This is the perfect bonding fic (I love this trope) the jealousy killed me but it was alright at the end. Everything felt organic. It was messy and painful but so beautifully written. Masterpiece. Go read it. I could put every one of Tepre's fics on this list they are all so good! She's an amazing author!

Buy A Heart by xErised (17668 words, rated E)

Draco's cock hardens as he looks at the invitation to the charity auction; his golden ticket to one wild night of desperate sex with Potter to get rid of this inexplicable obsession. His heart whispers that one night will never be enough, but Draco is beyond caring. All he knows is that he will pay any price to have Potter over and over again.

Alright so this one is pure and filthy smut and it is so freakin HOT. It left a strong impression on me years ago, go read it.

Aaaah fake dating I freakin love this trope! I love this Draco, he is a mess, he plays piano, he’s hot. Such a perfect fic.

The Claiming of Grimmauld Place by @bixgirl1 (74228 words, rated E)

When Grimmauld Place begins fighting against Harry’s ownership of it, he decides he needs help to train the historic home — but little does he expect that it’ll be Malfoy who’s most suitable for the challenge. However, as Malfoy and Harry get closer, Harry comes to understand that expectations aren’t always the best path by which to guide his heart — and in the process learns just what is needed to make a house a home.

I loved the magical theory. Sentient houses are my kink. The smut is scorching hot. This is so good. Bix is such a treasure to the fandom and I loved every one of her fics I advise you check them all out.

A Hag, a Hex, a Tale of Redemption by @aibidil (43328 words, rated E)

A fuck-or-die fairytale in which Draco Malfoy lives a despicable and unapologetic life — that is, until he's cursed to die unless he can fall in love with and fuck Harry Potter

I read it really a long time ago so I don’t remember much but I love the trope of fuck-or-die and this one really stuck with me. I remember it was so good and I loved it.

Ligabus Filium by @tessacrowley (41534 words, rated E)

It should be careful, deliberate, but it isn't. Like every other part of their relationship, it happens gradually and then all at once, before they even realize it. And when the little blue threads bind them together, there's no going back.

When I started reading Drarry again I was a sucker for BDSM fics. To me, if you’re into the genre, this is the best one. Tessa crowley is such a good writer, I recommend you check her other fics as well.

Forgive those who trespass by Lomonaaeren (135889 words, rated E)

Harry Potter was convinced he had an ordinary, if inconvenient, life. Then Ron and Hermione vanished in the Department of Mysteries. And the only person who may know where they are is a mute Draco Malfoy.

I read this fic when I first came back to the fandom. I don't remember the details just that it deeply stuck with me. I was slightly horrified but intrigued. I love everything in the department of mysteries. This was a horrific adventure and I loved it. If you want something on the dark side this is for you.

Turn by Saras_girl (306708 words, rated E)

One good turn always deserves another. Apparently.

I couldn’t make a reclist without including Turn. This fic changed me and my viewpoint for the better. It made me question my life choices. There’s nothing to describe it, you need to experience it.

Running on Air by eleventy7 @tinyhistory (74875 words, rated T)

Draco Malfoy has been missing for three years. Harry is assigned the cold case and finds himself slowly falling in love with the memories he collects.

Best for last. This is my favorite fic ever written ever. The vivid scenery. The pacing. It’s soft and there’s love. It’s brilliant and beautiful and poetic and I so deeply want a hard copy of it. I need it tattooed on my soul. By the end I was a sobbing mess. It is weirdly so personal to me. I think I too found home by reading it. DROP EVERYTHING YOU’RE DOING AND READ IT. THANK YOU.
