Finally wiping my old windows laptop that I hate. Why did I not know it was going to be this easy

#i should’ve done this literally months ago but anyway #it’s SO simple. i put all my files (which weren’t a lot because i quite literally have always hated working on this thing) onto a usb #and reset the laptop. it’s removing all apps and files and my account #i’m going to trade it in to a place that’ll give me £200 for it and use that towards a macbook #yes i knowww but consider: i like macs and i don’t want to learn linux and windows 11 is actually toxic waste #and i need a laptop so fuck me i guess #i should’ve just bought a new macbook instead of this one but i was like ‘oh windows are cheaper; it’ll save me money’ #literally no. getting a Good windows laptop set me back £600. which is still less than the mac i want #but i’ve barely used this thing and i can only sell it for £200 #which means i’ve lost £400. which is the difference between the mac i wanted and the windows laptop anyway #at least i can put this cash towards a new laptop. and i have saved enough for it #i’m just annoyed that i didn’t buy the macbook last year. i’d be sitting right now with a beautiful computer instead of this absolute pile #of crap that i have to wipe and drop off at an electronics store #it’s irritating #personal

I'm trying to find a decent cheap laptop but the way search systems work pisses me off. Searching "non chromebook" or "-chromebook" just makes the search results show exclusively chromebooks. Filtering to only show Windows 10 Home and Windows 11 Home operating systems still shows almost entirely Windows 10S and 11S which are fucking useless and usually mean the computer has shitty hardware. There's no way to filter out eMMC storage systems or refurbished computers. I'm going to commit a crime and it will be the fault of whoever nuked google's search capabilities and then decided to never set up the search settings on any other sites correctly in the first place

Flip Clocker A new clock software recently hit the shelves. At first, I just used it as wallpaper and liked the page-turning effect. It feels alive. Then I would use it at work and study and turn on the sound, which is the ticking sound of the seconds going by. Then I heard the time slipping away. The ticking sound is also a kind of white noise. I hear this sound and will immerse myself in learning and work. There are also many custom features to explore, such as changing the font background, and even more amazingly, there are analog dials! Favorite clock software so far!

Wo Apfel war, soll Zahnrad werden

Im September ist mein Macbook kaputtgegangen und ich habe zur Überbrückung der Zeit bis zu Reparatur oder Neukauf zuerst das alte Chromebook von Aleks verwendet und mir dann schnell ein eigenes für 150 Pfund gekauft. Seitdem habe ich darüber nachgedacht, wie es weitergehen soll.

Mit dem Chromebook war ich erstaunlich zufrieden, aber es gibt ein paar Dinge, die damit wahrscheinlich nicht funktionieren, vor allem die Herstellung der über zehntausend Seiten langen Techniktagebuch-Buchversion im Februar. Dafür brauche ich eine vollständige TeX-Installation. Alles, was man im Browser machen kann, funktioniert sehr gut, vor allem, wenn dieser Browser Chrome ist. Alles andere ist umständlich, vielleicht auch unmöglich, wobei ich das nicht sehr gründlich erforscht habe. Für ein paar Dinge habe ich Workarounds gefunden, zum Beispiel bietet mein Webhoster die Möglichkeit, den Code, den ich dort laufen habe, über das Web-Interface im Browser zu editieren. Aber hey, 150 Pfund, außerdem hatte es ein angenehmes Format, und dass ich nachts mal draufgetreten bin, hat mir das Chromebook auch nicht übelgenommen.

Ich war sehr oft auf der Apple-Store-Seite und habe mir angeschaut, was es dort in neu und in refurbished zu kaufen gibt. Ich war sogar im Apple Store, um mir die aktuellen Macbooks persönlich anzusehen. Es war nicht schön dort, und die Vorstellung gefällt mir nicht, um die 1500 Euro für ein Macbook auszugeben, dessen RAM und SSD nicht größer sind als beim zehn Jahre alten Vorgänger und dessen Konfiguration sich nie mehr ändern lassen wird. Ich weiß schon, dass man für das Geld einen ganz anderen und viel besseren Chip bekommt als früher, aber mich stört das Prinzip. Man muss sich sofort beim Kauf für die Ausrüstung entscheiden, die man bis zum Lebensende dieses Macbooks haben wird. “Aber 500 GB SSD und 16 GB RAM sind doch vollkommen ausreichend?”, sagt Jan Bölsche, bei dem ich mich darüber beschwere. “Ja, jetzt ist das ausreichend! Aber in zehn Jahren!” paraphrasiere ich das Motto des Techniktagebuchs.

Seit Ende Oktober war ich öfter als vorher bei der Twitteralternative Mastodon, worüber hier noch gesondert zu berichten sein wird. Bei Mastodon bekomme ich zum ersten Mal mehr davon mit, was Cory Doctorow so macht, denn der ist dort sehr präsent. Bisher ist er in meiner Welt vor allem als Buchautor aufgetaucht, aber er bloggt mit einer unfassbaren Produktivität alles voll, unter anderem über seinen kaputten Laptop: “The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've ever broken”. Was er in diesem Blogbeitrag über die schnelle und einfache Reparatur schreibt, finde ich sehr attraktiv. Vom Framework-Laptop habe ich vorher noch nie gehört. Sein einziger Nachteil scheint zu sein, dass darauf nur entweder Windows oder Linux läuft. Zu Windows zurück will ich auf keinen Fall, schon aus ästhetischen Gründen. Ich habe gerade erst einer Freundin bei Windowsdingen geholfen und es sah immer noch alles so hässlich und blöd aus wie früher. Den Umstieg auf Linux habe ich schon zweimal versucht, Ende 1998 und im Frühjahr 2002. Erfolgreich war keiner dieser Versuche, aber es ist zwanzig Jahre her und vielleicht hat sich ja was zum Besseren verändert.

Ich bewege die Frage in meinem Herzen. Neben den Verlockungen der Upgradebarkeit und der Reparierbarkeit machen mich mehrere Dinge geneigt, die Sache mal auszuprobieren:

Erstens habe ich in der Zeit mit dem Chromebook gemerkt, dass ich auch mit Hardware ganz gut klarkomme, die nicht wie die von Apple bei jeder Berührung “ich bin teuer und durchdesignt und wunderschön” sagt, sondern stattdessen vielleicht “hehe, ich bin die billigste Tastatur der Welt”. Ich werde also voraussichtlich nicht besonders leiden, wenn sich irgendein Element des neuen Laptops als nicht ganz so massivgolden wie bei Apple erweist.

Zweitens war ich in den letzten Wochen angenehm überrascht davon, wie schön und bequem es inzwischen bei Mastodon ist. Der Umstieg von Twitter war überhaupt kein Problem. Früher war es so, dass man entweder FOSS haben konnte oder Usability. Aber diese Zeiten scheinen vorbei zu sein.

Drittens habe ich keine anderen Geräte, die mich an die Apple-Welt binden. Mein Handy ist aus historischen Gründen ein Androidhandy, eine Smartwatch oder sonst irgendwas mit Apple zu Synchronisierendes besitze ich nicht.

Viertens läuft fast alle Software, die ich verwende, sowieso entweder im Browser oder ist Open Source. Einzige Ausnahme ist, so weit ich das zu diesem Zeitpunkt überblicke, die kostenpflichtige Diascanner-Software, aber die scheint es auch für Linux zu geben.

Fünftens mache ich gelegentlich Dinge auf der unixbetriebenen Kommandozeilenebene des Macbooks. Nicht viel, aber es schreckt mich nicht ab und ich erwarte keine unüberwindlichen Schwierigkeiten.

Etwa zwei Wochen, nachdem ich von der Existenz des Framework-Laptops erfahren habe, liege ich nachts wach und denke: Ich kann das. Ich probiere das jetzt aus. Am nächsten Tag bestelle ich den neuen Laptop in der DIY-Version zum Selbstzusammenbauen und ohne Betriebssystem.

Ich nehme schon mal vorweg, dass dieser Beitrag auf dem neuen Gerät geschrieben wurde. Was dafür passieren musste, folgt in Teil 2: “Mein Steamcracker ist eine Lego-Duplo-Kugelbahn“.
