Calendula officinalis, also known as common marigolds or pot marigolds. These are technically perenniel plants, but in colder climates they're likely to die off over the winter. Luckily they are exceptionally beginner friendly and will reseed themselves without intervention so they'll almost definitely be blooming again year after year.

They tend to flower very heavily and produce a large amount of nectar sugars, making them ideal for attracting pollinators and insects.

I have quite a few in the front garden that I tend to take photos of every year, and now I've finally turned one into a drawing using coloured pencils.

Flower Hammering

Throughout this process i'm hammering petals from the flowers onto the knitted panel i made. Before hammering the flowers on, i used a plastic sheet to lay over the petals so then i can get a clean print.

These flowers in particular are marigolds that i fetched from my own garden at my studio. Marigolds are really good for dyeing with as the colours come out a very rich yellow colour. I have some dark reddy orange ones too and the cool thing about these flowers is that the colour you see on the flower is the colour you get after hammering them onto wool specifically. I havent tested flower hammering mairgolds on other fabric yet but i might test this out later on in the year.

I thought that this process would be easier than bundle dyeing which you would have seen throughout my blog this year but it is just as tedious as rolling up bundles and steaming them for hours. The process for flower hammering is equally as tiring and time consuming. I think that no matter how you plant dye, it will always take time because it involves alot of foraging, mordanting fabrics, cleaning fabrics and cooking.

Marigold― How do you show support for each other? Who prefers little gestures over grandeur and vice versa?

of course, i'm a little gesture person and he's one or the other. he has a naturally grand personality; lives for the drama. but he's also thoughtful and doesn't need to orchestrate a huge show of affection.

i do small things for him like make his favorite desserts or tea, giving him little kisses, handing him things - just being helpful! he does the same in reverse: helping me lift things or reach things, taking care of me when i'm sick.

at the same time, he's That Guy and will absolutely spoil me and remind me of his dramatism
