I feel that there is a version of this movie that could have been great but it wasn't the one we got... Unfortunately.

the description of manodrome is so funny because it's vague. what repressed desires is ralphie uncovering? sexual attraction to men? homicidal tendencies? with jesse eisenberg, it could be both!!!

Berlinale Film Festival 2023 Coverage @ Film Cred
This year I did two reviews and an abbreviated festival wrap-up for Film Cred.
Here you’ll find an appreciative review for the Willem Dafoe-starring whatzit Inside, by director Vasilis Katsoupis.
Over here you’ll find a not-so-glowing review for the Jesse Eisenberg curio Manorome, from director John Trengove.
And you can follow this link to the wrap up article, where I touch upon such films as James Benning’s newest meditation ALLENSWORTH; the boldly experminetal Notes from Eremocene (Poznámky z Eremocénu) by Viera Čakányová; the hypnotic strangeness of Mamalia by Sebastian Mihăilescu; the hilariously bitter ode to the Trump era Hello Dankness by the masterful collage artists Soda Jerk; The Adults by Dustin Guy Defa and featuring beautiful performances by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis; the achingly spot-on tale of a writer in crisis in Christian Petzold’s Afire (Roter Himmel); the 70s neo-noir vibes of Till the End of the Night (Bis ans Ende der Nacht) by Christoph Hochhäusler; and the heartbreaking humanist joys of Celine Song’s Past Lives, which features a breakout performance by Greta Lee.

Its Just the Patriarchy, Hit it With Your Car
This week I had the great pleasure of watching Jesse Eisenberg's latest release Manodrome. And by pleasure I mean I enjoyed a solid hour and a half of grown men crying in an attic. While Eisenberg's performance was informed and visceral that was the only thing that was. Remove the commanding actor and his homosexual predilections and you're left with a bunch of dudes weeping in a circle jerk about how much they hate their girlfriends and wives while the cult's leader , Adrien Brody, calls himself Daddy . Now I'm in no way saying that men can't feel or should be subject to embarrassment or shame for being emotional creatures but this was not that. The social commentary on the so-called "struggle" of men fell short due to its lack of depth both within the realms of character and plot development. And let's not forget the chant. Ah yes the chant of an ungrateful man. "I created fire, I will take it back. I created steel, I will take it back. I discovered the sun and I will take it back. I will take what is mine, what has always been mine, and will always be mine. Not yours, mine."
This is why we can't let men handle anything. "I created fire I will take it back." Sir. I invented knowledge from the jump. Without me you'd still be swingin' your dick in the garden of Eden. Come on now.
All that aside I will give one thing to 2023 film Manodrome. Its portrayal of repressed, destructive behavior speaks many truths to those of us who identify with suffering, loss, abuse, shame, betrayal and so on. Though the attic circle jerk is a bit melodramatic the influence of a group mentality on a sole individuals emotional expression speaks volumes to anyone who has gone through intensive group therapy, trauma work, or meetings. When I was younger I thought tactics like breath work and breaking down trauma were woo woo yuppy attempts at understanding emotional chaos. But when we open ourselves to not only our own pain, but the pain of all those around us we are able to acknowledge that we are not in fact alone.
