Swim Ensemble (Bathing Suit and Skirt) | c. 1947 ・・・ One of California’s most influential contributions to American fashion was the bathing suit ensemble—consisting of any combination of bathing suit, skirt, shorts, pants, and top of the same fabric to mix and match to fit the occasion. Margit Fellegi’s two-piece ensemble could be worn as a bathing suit or, with the addition of the skirt, as seen here, for cocktails by the pool. What do you get when you combine an elephant with a fish? (Swimming trunks!). This Fashion Friday, we’re puzzling over what combination of styles and creatures led to this 1955 design, released by Cole of California in 1955. The company was founded in 1923 by Fred Cole, a former silent film actor. Cole’s swimwear line would later transform his family’s unremarkable knit underwear business into a Hollywood staple. Cole of California quickly embraced the possibilities presented by new synthetic fibers (the swimsuit above is made of William Simpson's Everglaze 73 Peerless Poplin) to produce novel, exciting, and eye-catching swimsuits like the “scandal suit” and the “swoon suit”, both designed by his Head of Design, Margit Fellegi. In 1980, Fred’s daughter Anna also began designing swimsuits for the family business. In 1997, Anna Cole debuted a hybrid bathing suit of her own design - the tankini.
