Kane spends anxious nights in May19...

May 19...

A rusty-sounding, moaning voice.

It echoed abruptly in Kane's head in multiple layers as he relaxed while wiping himself off after a shower at the hotel, and it stopped his brain. He was sometimes plagued by painful auditory hallucinations and visions, yet he could still shake them off of his own volition. Only this time, however, no matter how he tried, he could not silence that "voice".

May 19...

Even though it was still spring today, the night was scorching hot. Kane, however, did not care about the temperature and pulled out a thick winter blanket from somewhere in the room, tossed it on the mattress, and immediately crawled into it, curling up into a ball. The unusual heat radiating from Kane himself turned the blanket into a sauna-like space, bringing temperatures that would have been unbearable for a normal human being.

May 19...

Kane continued to shake his body to shake off the "voice" that kept echoing in his head and the negative emotions that kept pouring out of him without stopping. He was now feeling the greatest loneliness and fear in his life. Although he was not restrained in any way, he felt as if he were being forced into a bathtub filled with molten paraffin, which was taking its time to harden.

May 19... May 19...

"I'm scared...Daddy...Mommy...help me..."

Kane was about to explode with childish emotions that he had kept sealed since the tragedy of that day. The door to the storage room that would not open no matter how much effort he put into it, the thinning air, and the intense flames that burned his throat and skin bit by bit... these horrifying flashbacks were now destroying his soul.

MAY 19...!

Kane was about to scream out loud when he couldn't stand the auditory hallucination anymore. Suddenly, Kane sensed a slight chill in the air inside the blanket. At first he thought it might be due to the sweat he had shed to the point of discomfort, but when he felt an even stranger chill, he began to think, "This doesn't feel right". "Kane" A low male voice echoed through the room, which was supposed to be empty except for the Big Red Machine. It was a voice he had heard more than the voices of his parents. Kane poked half his head out of the blanket and turned to face the owner of the voice. "What do you want, arsonist" Kane glared at his brother with sharp eyes, but the taker did not change a single expression on his brother's face. His jade-green eyes shook quietly as if in pity for the man before him who had suffered for decades due to the trauma of his heart. Decades ago today, their childhood home was engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. The event had caused such a strong psychological shock to both brothers that it blurred their memories of that time for more than a decade. Kane, in particular, barely survived the fire, but he suffered burns all over his body that left him mentally stunted for a long time as an adult. "Yes, I did burn down the house," Taker mused. Taker sat down on a chair near his bed. He looked at his brother, who was staring into his eyes, and Kane looked away, unable to bear it. Why is he looking at me with such pitying eyes when he really hated me so much that he wanted to burn my parents to death? Kane was confused by this incomprehensible situation. "Get out of here, this is my room, get out" Kane raised his voice and slammed the blanket he was wearing onto Taker. Still, Taker stubbornly refused to move from the room. Kane finally broke down at his stubborn brother's attitude, clicked his tongue, and rolled onto the bed again. He turns his back and curls up, making sure never to turn his face to the other man. ...The truth was that Taker was unwilling to burn the house down. Bearer had seen the innate potential in Taker, and Taker's half-brother Kane, and had seduced Taker into entrusting him with flammable oil in the middle of the night under the guise of pest control at his house. Taker did not even know that Kane was playing with matches in the storage room. He did not know that the room was also secretly locked from the outside by Kane's real father... The consequences gave them supernatural powers and dehumanized them. Even if he was not the real culprit, and even if his brother would never forgive him, Taker was willing to bear all the guilt of what had happened. Ever since the day his memory of that day came back to him, he had blamed himself, thinking that if he had not trusted and suspected the fat man, who was only an acquaintance of his parents, his brother would not have become the monster he had become. "Do you still hate me?" Kane responds bluntly to his brother's question, "You don't have to say it, stupid" But even though Kane should have been in the worst mood, for some reason he did not hear that horrifying "voice" anymore. Instead, a kind of relief filled his heart. "If you hate me, you can hate me as many times as you want... as many times as you want, until you're satisfied" "Hmph, I'll kill you again and again, rotten zombie." A bleak conversation that would have been terrifying for those around them to hear. Yet, there was no longer any real hatred between them. For just a moment, they were back to the close siblings of their childhood. Eventually, Kane slowly fell asleep, the pain already gone from his face. As he left, Taker took one look at his brother's face and smiled lightly. 'Good night, Kane"

Barbasol's Power of Nostalgia

Often times, brand collaborations can feel forced, unnecessary, and leave us questioning “why?”. McDonalds will give any celebrity their own meal to promote and Supreme will slap their logo on a 3-pack of Oreos and sell it for $8. Every so often though, a brand collaboration will come around that feels meant to be. Feels nostalgic. A collaboration that feels so perfect because, well, it is perfect.

Back in 1993, Jurassic Park was released into theaters which would leave a mark on pop-culture and the film industry forever. Many, many references made their way from the film into popular culture, but one prop in particular has stood the test of time as a symbol to hardcore fans of the dinosaur blockbuster. The Barbasol shaving cream can was featured in the film as a device to steal, hide, and transport dinosaur embryos from the Jurassic Park facility, working as a MacGuffin of sorts for the plot.

In 2015, the Jurassic franchise received a reboot with Jurassic World, and Barbasol knew what they had to do. Leading up to the film’s release, Barbasol announced a collaboration with Universal Pictures to bring Jurassic World themed cans of shaving cream to shelves in stores. Jurassic fans were flocking to their local Walgreens to get their hands on a can of limited edition Barbasol shaving cream. There is only one reason why people would spend their money on a product, marked up from its original price, and not even use it for its intended purpose. Nostalgia.

This type of brand collaboration and communication from Barbasol and Universal Pictures revolves solely around the concept of nostalgia and the iconic pop-culture references it brings. The integration of the Barbasol can in the original Jurassic Park is one of the most recognizable instances of product placement in movie history. According to a 2020 article from SYFY, it’s one of the most iconic pieces of personal hygiene equipment ever to grace the big screen (Armstrong, 2020).

Now, while there is almost no documentation on how or why the original 1993 Barbasol product placement ended up making its way into the movie, 20 years later they knew they could tap into the nostalgic memory of fans who are familiar with and love Jurassic Park. “Barbasol’s role in the first Jurassic Park marks one of the most recognized brand integrations of all time, so it was a natural fit for us to partner with Universal on Jurassic World” said John Price, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Barbasol.  I know for me, the memories I have with movies from my childhood, like Jurassic Park, can bring out some strong emotions. When I’m shopping in the grocery store and I see a prop from one of my favorite movies for sale of the shelf, I get feelings of excitement and nostalgia. This is likely something the Barbasol’s planning team picked up on and discovered during their research, displaying how Jurassic Park holds a special place in the hearts of many of their consumers. Unlike the Diamond Trading Company’s “Raise Your Right Hand” campaign which aimed to “create a cultural phenomenon by changing women’s attitudes”, Barbasol tapped into an existing cultural phenomenon (Sunset, 2008).

In conclusion, I think Barbasol was very aware of the nostalgia their product carried and perfectly leveraged a very powerful pop-culture reference to create a strong emotional bond with their consumers, increase their brand visibility, and contribute to a larger story that resonates with fans by collaborating with Universal Pictures.

A Japanese delegation of Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) arrived in New York for a peace mission - and Yuri invited Malcolm to her residence at the Manhattanville Projects in #Harlem (the building in the background) to speak to them. When he arrived, Malcolm captivated the crowd. He held court and connected identities and experiences. He talked about how “You have been scarred by the atom bomb. You just saw that we have also been scarred. The bomb that hit us was racism.” Throughout their friendship, Yuri and Malcolm challenged each other as much as they supported each other: on integration vs. Black separatism, on religion, on internationalism. He supported the Hibakusha, and she was the first non-Black member of the Republic of New Afrika, Malcolm’s vision for the South. When he was murdered, Yuri was there. As Malcolm laid dying, she was the one who held him. In the ‘80s, after Yuri fought for reparations for Japanese-American Incarceration victims, reporters asked her what she thought should happen next.
