MR. SPEAKER: I don't know of any rule which permits reading in portions of dictionaries into the record, but if the House wishes to grant its indulgence, and I think it would be that, perhaps we could permit the member to read it in.

MR. HYNDMAN: If you or the other side are concerned about costs, I think the cost of Hansard eventually will go up about $5,000 as a result of these insertions.

Genuinely been super interested and curious about this ever since I found it, but what's the story behind Harpy Hare and And The Hound (I'm assuming they're tied together) ? I remember it being mentioned on TikTok it was based on a folktale in the story and I'm extremely curious as to what that tale is. The music has genuinely been super interesting to listen too and I'm extremely intrigued and excited to see anything that's coming next !

It holds a very huge narrative in Meadowlark and thats saying a bunch considering Meadowlark is practically a book of stories! I find it difficult to explain... But the tale revolves around a foolish Majesty, who refuses to listen.

The Storyteller reminds you of the past, The Bell Ringer the future, and the Enkindled with what is true... They came to the foolish Majesty to warn him of a tempest, a storm, a madness that is the Croon, entropy.

And yet he did not listen.

Tragedy occurs, which leads us to another story, one that mentions "the Hills" Cole sang about in their song of origin

Everything is connected!

But yes, its a folktale made and retold through various versions and portrayals, like most of the stories we have now. Often times simplified, re-depicted, or even misinterpreted...

What are your favorite ways to connect to your theriotype? (I am a meadowlark but if you have good bird ideas, I'd appreciate them.)

One of my favorites during warm seasons is to bike out to my favorite part of a nature park and just exist there for an hour or two, walking around and observing nature, paying attention to my surroundings like an animal exploring an unfamiliar place. The biking part is important because it is similar to flying, moving quickly across long distances without my feet touching the ground, gliding down hills, feeling the wind.

Another is practising whistling, trying to make cockatiel-like sounds and mimicking other birds. Or just chirping for fun.

This one is more parrot specific but eating foods that I can sort of pick apart with my "beak"(teeth) like a parrot might. Small crunchy things that don't require much chewing like seeds, nuts and occasionally sweets. Soft fruits and vegetables that I can peck away at. Things like string cheese or chicken wings are good "pick apart" foods.

Get into costuming! Make (or buy) some wings, depending on if you experience wing shifts on your arms or back.

When she packed for six weeks in Eastern Europe on a Fulbright-Hays Grant, Victoria Garton hoped to bring openness and wonder to the adventure. She also packed for the hills and valleys of an introvert’s terrain. Details in this chapbook of poems show life in Hungary and Poland less than a decade after the fall of the U.S.S.R. We see the crumbling facades, the graffiti-covered walls, but also the cottages sprouted like mushrooms after rain. The delight of seeing a Madonna wearing Tangerine Tango lipstick, the shock of a robbery, stirred cold war memories, and home-sickness that comes on viewing wind-swirled wheat are all part of this deeply observed journey.

Victoria Garton’s Pout of Tangerine Tango is a remarkable study in restraint and specificity. Her exploration of Hungary and Poland in 1998, which is the subject of this collection, harvests and sifts her memory of travels to post-Soviet Eastern Europe. In her title poem, a printed Madonna on a pennant twirled, “Her lips/in a pout of Tangerine Tango, the very shade/I wore in junior high.” Garton scuffed among vegetable rows planted on a former killing field, where “swollen melons/on hardened ground roll like heads.” We are educated by this lifelong educator and uplifted by the voice of a lifelong poet. We feel the cool of hand-painted porcelain, and long fields of wheat with heavy heads. “Our professors prepared us,” she says, “by always using lazy/before peasants,” whom she observes hoeing, hoeing like this Midwestern rancher, herself, has hoed. Garton anchors us in places with names, freeing us to canter into her art, where “sunflowers and Lipizzaners look away” and “Dark colts and light mares lift on hind legs.”

These Eastern European inspired poems are pouts of serious travels. Garton captures daily images and mannerisms well while exposing the thoughts and differences of cultures. These poems capture the details and images of life in Eastern Europe from an outsider’s perspective. Garton masterfully crafts her lines and metaphors. She exposes the differences of attitudes where …serious hosts…./ are not yet attuned to the iron cage/ of happy, consuming Americans.

Victoria Garton’s Pout of Tangerine Tango not only observes Eastern European daily life during a study-abroad summer in 1998, it brings American privilege and bias into clear focus and asks all of us to question what we think we know of ourselves and others. In “The Cold War,” Garton, a life-long teacher, acknowledges the sometimes misguided ways education warps our sense of people we do not know: “A girl in Civics class, I bent over books/ shaping enemies huge as their [Lenin, Marx] statues,” and “Fear tasted like canned peas/ simmering for lunch.” About the people with serious faces observed on Budapest streets, she sees the price of freedom: “They are not yet attuned to the iron cage/ of happy, consuming Americans.” About themselves, “American Teachers Going to Class,” she admits, “We’ll open a Starbucks here, /bring beans we like from the states.” Rich as these poems are in the details of foreign travel, richer still are the questions raised about the people we Americans think we are. This book is more timely now than ever.

Immortal Reviews' Best New Artists Of 2017

We lost legends in 2017, but also found new names who may perhaps one day be just as acclaimed. New talent defines the future of music, and the new names that rose up this year definitely show that there is a bright future ahead. This is Immortal Reviews' official Best New Artists of 2017 list.

BROCKHAMPTON

BROCKHAMPTON formed in 2015, but their masterful production and style would have you thinking this collective has been going for ages. The boy-band of hip-hop released three eclectic records in the form of their Saturation trilogy, creating many incredible tracks in a very short period of time. BROCKHAMPTON may very well be hip-hop's shining star, and we're excited to see what the future holds for them.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles is no stranger to the music world, yet his solo career will be his boldest adventure into it. His eponymous debut was released this year with loads of flair and style to back it, channeling the likes of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones in his 80's rock infused record. Straying far from his One Direction roots, Styles takes on balladry and a daring flair to launch his solo career, and long may it continue.

Declan McKenna

Declan McKenna was not the biggest new name of 2017, but he certainly deserved to be. His debut What Do You Think About The Car? is a humbling record, full of beautiful pop ballads like the warm grooves of 'Brazil' and the endearing 'The Kids Don't Wanna Come Home.' He's certainly young talent, but that only means he can only grow and learn from here, which is an exciting prospect given how well he has already done for himself.

Dua Lipa

No one took the pop world by storm quite like Dua Lipa did this year. Her sweet sound punctuated by her flowing voice and sweet percussion spawned some of the year's biggest pop hits including the dramatic and confident 'New Rules.' Her record is full of sleeping pop bangers that are all just waiting to be unleashed. She's the freshest new face in pop's mainstream, and with her sound, it's likely that she'll be staying on top for a time to come.

Meadowlark

Meadowlark are indie's sweetest new outfit, headed by YouTube cover star Kate McGill. The sweet pop-infused indie sound of Meadowlark bounces below dark and catchy melodies that never fail to grab your attention. With an angelic voice, McGill's timbre sounds just perfect in the space it occupies, and Meadowlark certainly won't be moving anywhere any time soon.

Kacy Hill

There's a very enchanting element to Kacy Hill's music. It's not quite minimalist, but there's no excess sound to her formula. Everything that needs to be there is present, and nothing more. From the upbeat sounds of 'Hard To Love' to the ghastly atmosphere of 'Lion,' Kacy Hill's sound voice is enchanting in all of the right ways, never failing to make something beautiful in its simplicity.

Lil Uzi Vert

Hip-hop has had an interesting year now that Soundcloud rappers are truly taking off. Among those coming out of that camp is Lil Uzi Vert, who makes music that's not lost in unabashed fame and lust. His music has cries of depression and an actual acknowledgement that not everything in life is perfect. That sense of imperfection in life is exactly the theme that bred hip-hop, and though it's not necessarily painted in the same light in Lil Uzi Vert's music, it's definitely present in some form.

Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith has been the brunt of jokes for a long time now, Given That He Always Types Like This And Embodies The Idea Of A Shower Thought. Regardless, his debut album SYRE was one of the most surprisingly good records that came out this year. With eclectic beats, endless bars, and influences that go beyond the world of rap, Jaden Smith truly blew all expectations out of the park, and given what he has already created, we're excited to see where he goes next.

Kehlani

The divide between singer and rapper in hip-hop is slowly becoming blurred more and more, but Kehlani is owning it in every way. Her edgier, R&B focussed sound is sweet yet has a certain naughtiness to it that assure you that it's not all fun and games when it comes to her. A smooth voice on a dirty beat can go a long way, and no one owns that like Kehlani does.

While more known as Drake's underlings, dvsn broke out of their mold and released their atmospheric sophomore record Morning After this year. Not seeking to be the kings of the city nightlife, dvsn delve into some real subjects and build loads of atmosphere to make certain that their message is wrapped in a sonic blanket that amplifies the meaning. Every note feels purposeful in Morning After, and that attention to detail gives much to be thankful for, and much to look forward to.

Flora and Fauna of Talath Dirnen, the guarded plain and the River Narog

Disclaimer: I used both what we can extrapolate is likely indigenous to the region based on descriptions of the landscape and climate as well as my own headcanons and inspirations and reference books on similar habitats as well as books like The Atlas of Middle Earth and The Flora of Middle Earth

I really love working on and researching these! and as always feel free to ask more, even if I've already done a place I'd always enjoy going into more detail of tacking a more specific kind of life there

Given that Tolkien was inspired in his plains and grasslands of a wide variety of places, everywhere from China to Britain to Northern Africa and the US, I’m imagining a wide range of biodiversity here in this plateau especially given the proximity to these two rivers. I don’t think that all of his grasslands have life from all these places necessarily but I do think there is the potential for more biodiversity. 

The Talath Dirnen was a plateau between two great rivers, the river Narog and the river Sirion and located Northeast of Nargothrond. It is described in the book as a mostly open plateau but with hills that were utilized for watch stations and some small forested areas. 

The hills and open plain are made up of a variety of species including apera, Coleanthus,  reed sweet grass, melica, veldtgrass, sages,  weeping alkaligrass, and many species in the daisy family. Wild strawberry and musk strawberry, hawthorn, thistles, and meadowsweet are more possibilities for the more shrub like areas around the hills. 

We don’t know a lot about the climate so it’s difficult to speculate on the forested areas but if I had to guess I’d say they were mostly deciduous ,broad leaved trees. Rain tree and wild berry (the common name for a species) are possibilities. 

River birds like loons, egrets, osprey, herons, cranes, teals and bobwhites nest closer to the banks of the two rivers.  As parts of the river Narog is underground, there are many unique species found there including salamanders like olms, cave amphipods, species of subterranean  Nemacheilidae, Viviparous brotula, and Ictaluridae, and roosting bats as well as a variety of more invertebrates. 

(I’m planning on going into the River and Mouths of Sirion in another post if there’s interest.)

(And I am so tempted to put something like a Paleoparadoxia in one of the rivers but alas I don’t think that quite fits the climate.)

And birds that nest in the flatter grasslands and hills like pheasants, killdeer, meadowlark, grasshopper sparrow, sedge wrens, bobwhites and plover. 

As I said before there are many different places Tolkien took inspiration from in his grassy plateaus so there’s a wide variety of possible wildlife especially as we don’t know much about the climate.  

Anything from different species of Hedgehogs, badgers or foxes (all three have representing species Europe, Northern Africa and Southern Asia where Tolkien was primarily inspired in his grasslands) deer or gazelle, giant ground sloths, at least one species of large wild cat, perhaps creatures like wildebeests occasionally pass through on migration routs.

Bird walk

Today’s bird walk with a friend was successful (in that we saw lots of birds, including some I don’t often see) and also unsuccessful (in that we saw several birds we could not identify). 

We saw a number of waterbirds, including lots of buffleheads, a lesser scaup, a western grebe, 2 Clark’s grebes, and probably at least 3 other grebes that we couldn’t see well enough to distinguish between western and Clark’s. Also, lots of unidentified gulls and some other ducks we couldn’t identify.

Among non-water birds, we saw a huge number of western meadowlarks singing in the grass, a couple of Say’s phoebes, a black phoebe, a couple of house finches, a pair of red-winged blackbirds making a bit of a racket in the wild fennel, a Brewer’s blackbird, a couple of small birds we didn’t recognise, and one unidentified raptor.

@lies, any chance you could help out with the raptor? The tail wasn’t red, but nor was it grey and stripy. The head seemed to be brown, the chest white with brown speckles, and it was flying over the low hills next to the bay. At one point it was flapping its wings to hover in place briefly. 

There was also a small grey and white bird, which I probably can’t describe in enough detail for you to help with, but here’s an attempt: it had a thin-ish beak, so it wasn’t a sparrow. The front was a bit streaky--grey on white--but without the black spot in the middle like a song sparrow has. The face had some markings, like a white swoopy eyebrow, and it was in the grass quite near the rock wall down to the water. It was cute! but nothing Merlin suggested seemed to match.

And we saw a sparrow-sized, mostly brown bird with a yellowish grey sparrow-like beak, with a bit of yellow around the eyes/face, and a solid beige or grey front. Thoughts?
