So. Merlin in The Beginning of the End. Was he or was he not supposed to parallel Uther?
Uther sounded pitifully insane and paranoid with how much he repeated the same bigoted idea over and over. "That druid boy only wants to see my kingdom destroyed" and so on. Uther wouldn't be able to tell, how the little druid would get there, but he takes no chances. But how less insane would Merlin sound if someone asked why he was going to let the guards find Mordred? Well, the dragon under my home told me. He swears the kid's gonna destroy Arthur one day. No idea how and why, but he will. Anyway, the dragon did a jumpscare on me last time I visited and I'm still having hiccups-
Uther judged an innocent druid boy based on crimes he never committed or showed signs of wanting to, but Merlin was also about to let that innocent druid boy die because of the prospect of a crime that boy never committed or showed signs of wanting to.
And obviously both Uther and Merlin only wanted to protect something dear to them, but they both clearly were willing to overlook something terrible, in order to prevent something so terrible it's unthinkable to them.

GAIUSxUTHER LETS HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈
………………. Hear me out lmao
Ok right off the bat, my gut instinct when hearing this pairing is to go: “EW NO we hate Uther and this is bad.” Also, when it comes to how I feel about their interactions on screen, I do not feel any kind of romantic/sexual tension, which is important to me when it comes to shipping because it’s just the vibes, you know?
However, from a writer’s perspective, this ship is very intriguing. The obvious parallels to Merlin/Arthur. The way it’s like, “hey, we are you guys in 50 years if you don’t figure your shit out like we couldn’t”. The idea that Uther is bisexual, but it was his own father’s teachings of doing what kings are supposed to do (like having heirs) caused him to repress it. That he can see the bisexuality in Arthur but doesn’t address it because ignoring has always worked and just does what his father did to him. That Gaius didn’t run away with Alice and stayed with Uther because he’s actually in love with him and can’t help it no matter how bad Uther gets. The fact that Gaius delivered Uthers child and loved him like his own.
The writing parallels are screaming at me to dig into it. I’m a sucker for this kind of thing. But again, I don’t actually feel any romantic/sexual tension when they’re on screen together which, like I said, is also important to me.
Sooooooo, because of my extremely complicated feelings about this one:
Gaither: 50/100
Feel free to send me ships to rank :)
