Is Menstruation a Human Rights Issue? Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) has been recognized as an overlooked barrier to human rights.  This is because a lack of access to basic sanitation during menstruation can hinder a person’s ability to exercise their rights.  This lack of access bars many from equally participating in society.   This issue may not connect to some in a “developed” country, or, those with secure access to sanitation.  But many people in developing countries or in underprivileged situations do find themselves excluded from society and a sense of normalcy.  Many girls in developing countries, for example, are forced to stay at home during their periods, meaning they regularly miss school. Worse, some leave school altogether due to a dangerous stigma surrounding menstruation and womanhood. This absenteeism extends into employment where people are cut from meaningful access to work.  An example of this can be seen in poor factory conditions of certain countries where some are not able to practice proper menstrual health hygiene or have no access to clean menstrual products.   Poor MHM inevitably leads to poor overall health and wellbeing as infections and reduced quality of life become common. What is Menstrual Hygiene Day? Menstrual Hygiene Day is on May 28 (28.05), a date representing the average menstrual cycle of 5 days of bleeding for every 28-day cycle. This day was created to bring awareness to menstruation and menstrual hygiene around the world. Menstrual hygiene is the practice of managing your menstruation in clean and accessible ways. Currently, there are still many places around the globe where this is not possible, so we need to improve management accessibility and acceptability to rectify this problem. What could you do to help with the cause or celebrate the day? ➤ Talk to your friends and family about menstrual hygiene management and periods – take down any stigma! ➤ Donate to responsible charities or organizations that provide menstruation products, create education materials or do research on menstrual and reproductive health ➤ Learn more about your menstrual cycle! Even if you do not menstruate, learn about menstruation! Knowing this knowledge allows you to help others too ➤ Practice compassion and empathy: if someone you know is menstruating or needs help managing menstruation, offer your help or understanding!

"PROTECT MY DIGNITY AND STOP THE RED SPOT is dear to our hearts because it will not only afford us the privilege to donate sanitary pads to these girls but it will give us the opportunity to educate them on how best to care for themselves so as to avoid being infected during or after menstruation. and most importantly stop them from skipping classes. . The disadvantages of using clothes or other means to absorb menstrual flow is that when these materials are not taken into care and not washed properly, cloth pads can cause vaginal infections which in turn is a harbinger to many harmful diseases. . . It occurs due to the formation of bacteria which happens as a result of uncleanliness. . . This is why we are calling on kind spirited individuals, corporate bodies and organizations to be our sister’s keeper by donating a pack or packs of sanitary pads to protect women and girls from infections. . . . Ray Of Hope Empowerment Foundation in partnership with Beverley and @fabjewels_official will be visiting Guto Secondary School Bwari on the 10th June, 2019 for a one day sensitization on menstrual hygiene management and distribution of free sanitary pads to commemorate the 2019 World menstrual hygiene day. . . Thank you so much @fabjewels_official For coming through for us at a very short notice. Beverley, words are not enough to describe how compassionate you are. God bless you. Together let us save the girl child.
