Sometimes I wonder about what it'd be like if Bridgerton's colourblind casting had given us a Cinderella (1997)-esque main family. And then I wonder if Bridgerton's casting would have still found a way to keep a white person in any interracial pairings.

I'm all for POC solitary but the simple truth is that the other nonblack WOC Disney Princesses are afforded more attention by Disney than Tiana. Aladdin has two sequels and a series. Pocahontas and Mulan both have two movies. The princess and the frog doesn't have a sequel (and it's not like it's a new movie like Moana! It's older thank Frozen, which has two movies and an actual section on disney plus dedicated to all the extra Frozen content. Also, Tangled also has a series despite being older than TPATF)

Tiana simply isn't getting enough attention.

Tiana has been ignored by Disney for ages and it is just so unfair. It’s clear at this point that they made her as a quota to make Black women shut up because they didn’t even put any heart in it. They made her the “Strong Black Woman” and had her overwork herself while giving her a pink-clad and feminine white blonde “princess” best friend. Then they turned her into a frog, made her literally only a human for the beginning and end of the movie. And THEN AND THEN RIGHT AFTER THAT they made a pretty delicate white blonde princess with shimmering golden magical hair in a typical fantasy fake-German setting, like I see what you did there Disney...just a huge slap in the face to Black girls feeling represented by Tiana that only served to remind us that Black women will never be worthy of the fairytale life to Disney’s eyes...they couldn’t even give us a genuine African/African-American fairytale...they forced Tiana’s story to be “realist”, set in the 1920s during segregation where racism was rife and she had to sit in the back of the bus, showing how Black girls can never be fairytale princesses, we can only struggle and suffer oppression. 

And then right after that made a genuine light-hearted and magical fairytale with a pretty girly white princess Rapunzel. And then they made Brave. And then they made Frozen. Even the other princesses of color got this, Pocahontas even got a whimsical romance and that is arguably even worse as they made her adultified/sexualized fall in love with a colonizing piece of shit, but back to Tiana...they never truly cared about her or her story or the Black girls with princess dreams that they claimed to represent...I mean for goodness sake her name was originally going to be “Maddy” and she was conceptualized as a chamber maid to a white Southern Belle(who eventually became her best friend in the final product...🫤). And I like Tiana, as well as Charlotte, as well as the movie on a whole, but umm... 

It shows that Disney does not care. Or at least didn’t care when they made it. The worst part is that they DID do Black girls right with Cinderella(1997), my all-time favorite movie, but it’s relatively obscure outside of the Black community. Cinderella was excellent. What’s stopping them from doing it again? Hopefully they’ll do right by us with the new The Little Mermaid movie, but I have my doubts already with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Aquafina being a part of it...and according to a friend of mine they didn’t even give Ariel a Black family and her prince also isn’t Black(I don’t think Disney has ever had a Black prince despite having three Black princesses 😭 ik we’re talking about misogynoir here but that’s still...well...not great...). But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I then bought his Selected Poems and Don Juan 📜 -reading his work is also likely to lead to finding a biography about him, and works by and about the other Lake Geneva attendees: Mary Wollstonecraft (Shelley), Percy Bysshe Shelley, Claire Clairmont, John Polidori (I have previously read Frankenstein and The Vampyre)

-at the beginning of January I really wanted to start reading Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, but soon afterwards I found out an internet booktube friend died suddenly, so I was a little out of it last month. Boy Parts was actually on her 2024 tbr, so I definitely want to get to it soon when the spur strikes again. 📷 -honestly, since finding out about her death, though it has taken me some time, I'm even more determined to get to books and movies I've been wanting to read and to watch for years! things I've put off because of high expectations or whatever. things I think will be new all-time favs, 5/5 stars, etc. I'm going to read them! and one of those is A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers 🍖🍇 -I'm now realizing, when you think about it, certain Jean Rollin films could probably be categorized here 🧛🏼‍♀️

Pjo casting anon back in your inbox before you probably even seen the first ask just to say that I've just been feeling rabid about the topic.

I feel like I shouldn't be as cynical and skeptical as I am about it. I remember seeing movies and shows and cartoons with characters that look like me! Their experience is similar to mine! I feel seen! I will forever cherish 1997 Cinderella and KND and various sitcoms. But I don't know.

Something about the internet and being more aware of marketing and just how _soulless_ it can feel. Remakes after remakes. Adaptation after adaptation basically doing similar things. Announcing similar things for the exact same reason just beat all the excitement out of me. It doesn't help that pjo is a fandom that I revisit consistently no matter what. I don't even mind that casting, it's just the little voice in the back of my head going _why_ are you telling us this?

I might just have an old mindset of if you actually cared you would of just did it. Which is hard because Disney and baseline marketing. And seeing people arguing the past few days... boy howdy they did it even though it's nothing new. Just seeing people attribute the _potential_ of a good well meaning message as an actual statement that has been made? Gnashing teeth and growling. Don't trust 'em with shit. We'll see when it comes out.

Five movies/shows

The fact that “shows” is included in here means that’s going to be the majority of this, because in general I have a lot more TV shows I like than movies. I’m not a huge fan of the visual medium in general, but shows are able to seize my heart, you know how it is.

Cinderella, but specifically the Disney version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical from 1997. This movie was my entire childhood and remains my favorite movie of all time; i love it so so so much: the music, the costumes, the characters, the actors. It’s such a brilliant, fun, loving movie.
