Civilization 1: a deep strategy game with a map spanning the entire Earth, almost unheard of at the time
Civ 2: huge maps with as many cities as the engine limitations could handle, fan-made scenarios could make both realistic depictions of the entire Earth and specific battlefields down to the hamlet
Civ 3: maps are less large but you can still simulate world-wide realistic scenarios with dozens of nations
Civ 4: maps get smaller, scripts and mods allow you to simulate historical scenarios but the scope gets even smaller, ironically allowing you to play with less
Civ 5: maps get even smaller, focused on hex combat regardless of scale, the Earth maps makes for strange things like archers shooting across the English Channel, graphics increasingly cartoonish
Civ 6: now cities have districts that make them spread across whole continents, maps get so small that even Civ 1 seems large, arcade gameplay, graphics are caricatures at this point
Civ 7: presumably it will be cartoons of unique units of samurai and legionaries fighting in 10x10 hex maps

In the rural outskirts, you can also see Crazy Dave's Lawn, primed to play line defense.
The Chessmasters - We've spread our resources and set up camp throughout the forests. Hidden from the populous cities, these woods will allow us to carry out our operations and plot strategies with minimal chances of espionage leaking our plans to the enemy. Meet in the central camp right after our guided tour of the Pit. We are to discuss movement towards securing the Indie Artifact.
Like Clockwork - The grandest of optimizers have cleared an entire reach of the forest in the name of sheer statistics and economy. Their generators, conveyor lines, and automated logic circuits are unlike any other, and not only that... they seem to be diverging a handful of their power supply to fighting back against blue, ravenous fluid known only as Creeper. Goodness knows whether this scale of deforestation is truly justified...

i just came to the realization that i can’t play video games by myself.
no, that’s not the realization. i knew that already.
i can’t play video games by myself because i have siblings.
three of them, a set of twins and a stepsister less than a year older than them. they’re all ~3 years younger than me, so of course when i’m 10, 11, 12 and they’re getting their first tablets and starting to play mobile games, they’re sticking together and i don’t have shit to do but play with them. and our big one was minecraft, obviously, but we also played a ton of single-player games just…in the same room, commentating. complaining when we lost a level, sharing strategies and shit.
my sisters and i aren’t close, i don’t think. we’re very different people, even if we’re similar in a few specific ways. different interests, friends, a bigger world beyond our house. jobs and college and a propensity for fighting.
they still play hay day together. i don’t, since i’ve been away at school, and even now that i’m not it feels wrong to insert myself. i still have it on my phone, though, and occasionally one of my sisters asks if i have cookies.
sometimes i redownload old mobile games that are kind of shit, either because they got abandoned in 2015 or they’ve gotten so overrun with ads and pay-to-play there’s practically no game at all. the nostalgia is fun for a little bit, but i never keep them long.
i just cant play games by myself. i don’t have anyone to talk to.
