Gameplay
Inscryption is an Indie horror, rouge-like, card-battling game. If you want to draw similarities with card-battle games, think of Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokémon cards, but a more simplified version that still requires some strategies. But with all the ways you could possibly play, you’d be sure to find your own cheesed style. Personally, I am not the best at strategy-based games or card games, the hardest card-battle game I’ve played was Club Penguins Card-Jitsu back in the day, but I found Inscrytion to be fun and immersive, even if a little frustrating at the start.
The game is played in ‘Acts’. Act One would possibly bring the most frustration to an average gamer or someone who just isn’t familiar with strategy card games, and as I am both; I was frustrated at the beginning. But, once you’ve ‘failed’ a few times in the first Act and find yourself falling into the game challenge more and more, it can become fun, and you can start to pay attention to the details that the game you and the game will slowly become easier as you gain insight into the fights and bosses presented to you.
The game is filled with puzzles, most are not necessary to the game, but it may help you have better cards to play with or unlock more of the lore of the game.
Once you’ve completed the game for the first time, you unlock challenges that can make gameplay more difficult, if that’s your masochistic jazz.
Story
As to not give away too many details as this is a story-dependent game that should be unspoiled for the average gamer.
At the start, you’re unsure of who you are and just assume you’re playing a blank-slated husk character that represents yourself, which is later proven different. You’re placed in a darkness-encased environment with a strange character that introduces you to their card game in an almost Dungeons & Dragons Games Master manner. The attitude this darkness-encased character has is kept throughout this Act. Once you’re allowed to explore your environment a little, you’re allowed to really intake your enclosure and partake in the puzzles it presents you.
The story is well put together, enraptures, and lets the player piece the story themselves without it being spoon-fed to them. As the game continues into its further Acts, you feel an “Oh woah what” sensation as you start to piece the story together with the snippets you gain access to.
You can unlock more background lore details to the story of the game in the later Acts, but it isn’t necessary to fulfill your average gameplay experience but might be fun to unlock in further playthroughs or if you want to have in-game downtime to explore.
I love both major and minor characters that are introduced to you as you play. They all keep the story heavy-duty glued together nicely. The characters all mesh and conflict with each other well. It’s a joy to watch their interactions with each other and the player, especially once the twists and turns start.
Art Style/Music
Inscryption is beautifully put together. The art style throughout the game changes dramatically, but it does not cause any conflicts to the player's gameplay experience as the Acts progress. I personally LOVE most of the art styles that present themselves in this game.
The music in Inscryption is beautiful to listen to and even have their own little easter eggs if you listen to them closely enough. Act 1, I believe, has the best themes for it environment and bosses, but Act 2 also have great themes also. Some of the tunes might be a bit jarring to listen to at the beginning with their sharp tones and rumbling bases. But once you really get into the vibes and understanding of characters in the game, they’re amazing to engross yourself into the world of inscryption and uncover its story.
[minor spoilers from tune theme names below]
My top songs from the Inscryption OST would be:
1. The Trapper
2. The Scrybe of Magicks
3. The Four Scrybes
4. Deathcard Cabin
The whole of the Inscryption OST is available on Spotify.
Final Comments
I honestly enjoyed Inscryption, especially once I really started to understand and get into the gameplay and story. The story and art styles are the real cream of this crop and really bring the story together.
I highly recommend this game to an average gamer or if you want to try out a card-battling/rogue-like game for the first time.
Cheers,

Inscryption (2021)
From the creator of Pony Island and The Hex comes the latest mind melting, self-destructing love letter to video games. Inscryption is an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie. Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cards...

Tired and happy after finishing my GGJ project with shadowmint! The theme this time was “roots”.
Tree of Strife - as a little sprout, save the life tree from parasitic plants. It's a card battler with plant summons and a branching (heh) encounter system. Art, animation & music: me Coding & design: shadowmint We did the long jam and started after the theme release, so we had a couple of extra evenings to work on this one, instead of the normal 48 hours. =) I even had time to write a little bit of music and do some gameplay polish.
You can play in browser here! Pick a red flower to start and encounter and drag cards onto a creature to play them. Clearing an encounter means you can reach further up the branch. You can do as many encounters as you like to get better cards, and face the boss at the top when you’re ready.

Experience the Thrills of Mildred's Tarot Battle
Tumblr media
Mildred's Tarot Battle a turn-based card battler game for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC has a Demo. Beedy Beeper's exceptional skills as a developer truly shine in this adventure. With a full release due to make its way onto Steam. Let's dive into Mildred's Tarot Battle, a truly unique turn-based card battler game that's coming to Linux. You're Mildred, a spirited grandma with a knack for tarot cards. Your daughter thinks it's time for you to move to a retirement home, but you're not having any of it. The twist? Your tarot deck isn't just for show; it's your secret weapon in a series of challenges. Due to test test your wits and strategy. The core of Mildred's Tarot Battle revolves around various battles - obviously. There are 12, each more intriguing than the last, complete with a comprehensive tutorial to start. Mildred's deck, a creation of her own, features the 22 cards of the Major Arcana. Which also brings a mystical edge to your strategy. Gameplay is turn-based, perfect for those who like to think a few steps ahead. You'll feel right at home if you're into planning and anticipating moves. Plus, you get to pick and add unique new cards to your deck, giving you a fresh edge in each battle.
Mildred's Tarot Battle Trailer
youtube
And the battles? They're a blast. Mildred faces a range of quirky foes, each with their own weird special attacks. From the pushy doctor to the oddball from the Church of Perpetual Motion. These encounters are as entertaining as they are challenging. But Mildred's Tarot Battle is not all about the battles. Between each clash, you're treated to delightful cut scenes. These moments are key; they show you how your progress is influencing Mildred's daughter, Lydia. It's a heartwarming, funny journey, and Mildred's character shines through. She's charming, sure, but she's also no push-over! And that's what makes Mildred's Tarot Battle stand out. It blends the charm of a story about independence and the thrill of strategic turn-based battles. Plus, it's accessible, thanks to its easy to learn mechanics, but also offers plenty of depth for those looking for a challenge. It's a blend of heart, humor, and strategy that's not just engaging, but also speaks to a wide audience. Whether you're a fan of card games or just love a good story, the Demo is worth checking out on Steam. The full release is due to release in Q4 2024 on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.

random idea;
card battler where all cards have both an attack value, and a defense value, so you can play them as either and don't get screwed by rng giving you no options
is there a game like that?

[LEGACY] Ratropolis
#DoubtfulPlayer #Sunday legacy upload. Today's #GameReview is #Ratropolis by @CasselGames. An #indie #deckbuilder #towerdefense #cute game, released on #Steam, and given to me by #keymailer. The #repost of this #review is available now on our website.
Ratropolis takes the cake from Castle On The Coast from me for “best game I’ve received from Keymailer yet.” in the grounds that I am playing this game off-stream and really am enjoying it. Castle On The Coast is still by far a better game, but due to me getting motion sickness and Ratropolis being the extremely simple game that it is, makes for a super addicting, challenging but fundamentally…

Card battler game I'm making called Circulation!
hello!! I'm new here but I've started making something and I think it would be fun to share something I've been working on!
That thing is Circulation, it's a standard card battler, punch your opponent in the fast until they die!
It has a few gimmicks, the first one, and most notable is that the damage you deal turns into this game's currency that's used to play cards, it's called blood!
The second gimmick is my favorite, although it doesn't take place inside the individual duels; golden cards! Golden cards are versions of normal cards that are more powerful than the normal version, instead of being bought like a normal card, you'd have to find them, and depending on the rarity, only so many could be found, for instance, an infinite amount of common cards could be found but only 1 legendary card could ever be found!
The third gimmick is my second favorite, it's a secondary gamemode called King of the Hill. Basically if someone has a lot of golden cards and isn't trading them around they'll have to participate in a King of the Hill thing as the king. How KotH matches work is that many players would fight in a tournament bracket set up and the final 2 players instead of fighting each other 1v1 as normal, will enter a 1v1v1, where the winner keeps the golden cards that the king had, the king will be the only one allowed to use golden cards in KotH to make it fair for everyone, and give the king an inherit advantage so they have a good chance to keep their golden cards. This would be to prevent hogging of legendary cards, encouraging circulation of golden cards!
Now that the gimmicks are out of the way, I wont say too much more, but I will tell you all of the stats, and show you one character!
Blood: A currency for most cards. You do not gain blood from making a creature or character lose health. Dealing damage to Health gives you blood equal to the amount of damage you dealt. Blood should not be created.
Sacrifice: A card with Sacrifice will destroy an amount of friendly cards when played. If Sacrifice is greater than the amount of cards you have on the board, you may not play the card.
Attack: The amount of damage a creature or character does.
Endurance: Every time a weapon attacks, it loses one endurance. If a weapon’s endurance reaches 0 or lower, it becomes inactive.
Health: Self-explanatory. When a card’s health reaches 0, it becomes inactive. A card’s health cannot go below 0. Shield: Takes damage before it goes to health, with excess damage going to health. You do not gain blood when depleting shields.
And for the character..
Yotu - Trapper
Attack: 1
Health: 30
Abilities: At any time, you may play a Trap. On your turn, you may expend 2 blood to add Mimic to any of your cards anywhere without using a move. Character Card: Mirror World
Mirror World
Spell
Blood: 6 Special: When played, you draw five Mirror Illusions.
Mirror Illusion
Creature
Blood Cost: 0
Attack: 0
Shield: 1 Special: Unnatural. Mimic. Riposte.
Trap
Creature
Blood Cost: 3
Attack: 4
Health: 1 Special: Protector. Counter. A Trap may only attack if its Protector 1 target was attacked. A Trap’s shield may not be increased.
(And here are the keywords so you actually understand what they do) Mimic: When played, a card with Mimic appears as a different card to the opponent. After that card is attacked, its true identity will be revealed to the opponent. If a card is specified with Mimic, the card with Mimic will appear as that card, if not, you can choose the card that will be mimicked. All Special effects will be hidden from your opponent, unless the Special effect changed a stat. Unnatural: A creature that is Unnatural may live without health, but it needs shield to live. Riposte: When a creature with Riposte is attacked, the attacker takes damage by its target equal to the damage it dealt even if it dies unless the creature was attacked by Counter or Riposte. Protector X: When played, you must choose up to X attackable targets. If X is not specified, X = 1. All attacks to a target be redirected to the first creature that targeted it with Protector X while it is alive unless the attack was already redirected. Tl:Dr
