Metal Gear Acid 2
In a welcome surprise, Snake’s card battling experiment wasn’t just a one off event. The team followed up with a new game a year later, expanding and adding more. It differentiates itself with a new cell-shaded style, expands upon the eclectic mix of trading cards and turn-based strategy, and it features a unique, if impractical accessory to give the game a more ‘solid’ look. The more well-rounded offering of Acid 2 improves upon the original, and helps highlight what works, while also making Acid‘s deficiencies more obvious too.

I've been working on a second playthrough of Fire Emblem Engage, and I'm trying to remember if there was any other game I did a complete 180 on like this one.
When I first saw the leaked screenshots in 2022, I was so unimpressed that I was convinced they were fake. After the official reveal, though, I started to warm up to it, and eventually even got hyped. By the time I had finished my first playthrough, it was my favorite Fire Emblem game.
It just goes to show that first impressions can be misleading.
Given that it was intended to be an anniversary game, I suppose it's unlikely that Engage will get a second game set in that world. That's a shame because I'd love to see more done with this setting and idea.

As part 2 of my Unicorn Overlord demo doodles... I had it scheduled to continue my incredibly niche "anime/jrpg people with spec evo weirdos" series and was like "wait Unicorn Overlord has anime/jrpg people" so here is Alain with a Mantelope from All Tomorrows

Now that I'm 20 hours into playing and replaying the Demo of Unicorn Overlord to have access to bunches of unit customizations, I have finally decided on a color scheme for myself and my personal troops.
I adore the Witches. They have some visual details that bothered me at first, a really flat cape and some hideous shoes. But the cape turns into a long bacon judging by the prologue pre-promoted units.
My magic allows me freeze units, confer the ability to kill armor units by adding magic damage, and there is a book you can give to spear piercing/axe cleave to freeze 2-3 people at once, rendering half an enemy squad useless while the rest of the squads AI mops up anyone who isn't frozen first.
This is what I want out of a tactician squad. (I am also a sucker for ice magic)
Hammers, Greatswords, and Fencers all take a little while to get to. The above is a squad I can assemble within a few fights if you don't count how much honor it costs to reach the ability to run 4 character teams.
This is a setup that just uses early and basic units fairly well. Even if I could aspire to units with better kill-looping potential than the cute spear girls.

Playing the demo for Unicorn Overlord & as I figured, Vanillaware still don’t miss! Yes I’m one of the 15 people who enjoyed Dragon’s Crown. Despite enjoying Fire Emblem & its ilk, my personal favorite type of tactical strategy RPGs are the ones where the units are little battalions of individual characters with customizable formations rather than the more ubiquitous style solo/duo units you get with Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics.
The very good indie game Symphony of War is the only similar tactical RPG that I’ve played recently though there might be others that just never passed my radar. As such, getting a beautifully executed tactics game from one of my favorite developers of all time is an absolute treat & I’m triply excited thanks to the fantastic & hefty demo.
Sadly I still need to finish the last 1/3rd of 13 Sentinels. 13 Sentinels is brilliant in every way but I’ve left it incomplete in my backlog for what might be a year & change now & I’m dreading that I might have to start over with a new game file since I might have absolutely lost my bearings in regards to both the story & gameplay by this point.
My only real gripe with Unicorn Overlord so far is that I wish more devs would pick a setting outside of Western/European High Fantasy for these tactical RPGs & RPGs in general to be completely honest. It’s one of the reasons I appreciate Advance Wars more than Fire Emblem despite growing up playing both. Just once I’d love to see a tactical strategy RPG game like this set in a cyberpunk dystopia or a retrofuture superhero setting or a prehistoric stone age fantasy world or within the afterlife cosmology of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Anything other than swords, knights, lords, castles etc. Vanillaware in particular would kill it with their evocative work in Muramasa & 13 Sentinels.

Metal Gear Acid
Never let it be said that Metal Gear avoided taking chances. Sony, at the end of 2004 and the start of 2005, made their entry into the handheld space with the PlayStation Portable. The system provided some impressive specs at the time, with developers like Capcom, Namco, and Electronic Arts signing on in the launch window. Naturally, Konami didn’t want to be left out in the cold, so Solid Snake was there at launch with Metal Gear Acid (stylized with all caps & an exclamation mark for ‘i’ on the box art). Only, rather than adapt the memorable gameplay from the PS1 & PS2 games, this first taste of Metal Gear on the PSP is a turn-based strategy game with deck building elements. The game certainly makes some interesting swings with this odd combo, but does it pay off?
