every time I rewatch the eleventh hour, I get struck by this lingering moment between 11 and amy as he promises to return :
there’s this achingly wistful music playing in the background - but they’re smiling in the warm light of the tardis burning. there’s such a profound and tender grace to this moment. the camera adopts the point of view of a child witnessing wonders for the first time but the music is telling the story of the isolation and loneliness that came after. this is him becoming her imaginary friend but this is also him unwittingly stealing away her childhood. she will never trust like that again. it’s the adventure and the damage all at once!

RTD following up Moffat's 'The Doctor's an idea and a story we tell so anyone can take up that mantle', with 'The Doctor can be a man, a woman, neither, or beyond' in this essay I will

I think the thing abt the 11th doctor era is that the s5 s6 s7 storyline don't really cohere into a single mega arc but their relationship to each other is kinda more like rebooting the same idea again and again. s5 to s6 especially i think, bc they share 'bad guys plotting to dispose of the Doctor for what they perceive as the greater good'

The funny thing about Clara is that on The Doctor and Clara's adventures she's depicted as the more socially aware one who can be the "carer" in the face of Twelve's rudeness and alien nature. Than when you see her with Danny you find out her social skills are actually abysmal and The Doctor has such poor social skills they make her social skills look good by comparison

did y'all know that donna's husband in forest of the dead was meant to be a trans man, and they just couldn't find a way to make it explicit in-text
donna noble manages to get herself a trans family in every version of reality huh

the thing about doctor who is that its only good when the writers remember that the doctor is Literally Just Some Guy. doctor who should be a show about a weird annoying burnout who travels through space and hangs out with humans because his own species don’t want him. whenever the show buys into the idea of the doctor being a Very Important Universally Beloved Hero Prophesized To Save The World instead of a cosmic dipshit driving a busted old car he stole on graduation day doing the alien equivalent of backpacking across europe the show starts hardcore sucking

you ever learn something you wish you didn't? I, for example, just learned that between 2008 and 2015 not a single episode of Doctor Who aired that was written by a woman. Between The Sontaran Stratagem, a story with David Tennant as the Doctor, and The Woman Who Lived, a Peter Capaldi story, not a single episode was written by a woman.

bill asking twelve why he noticed her out of all the people who come to his lectures who aren’t supposed to and it cutting to the photo of susan on his desk as he says “most people, when they don’t understand something, they frown. you smile” he chose her bc she reminded him of his granddaughter and her curiosity and joy!! twelve said I WILL adopt you immediately!! I’m gonna cry!!

mummy in the orient express is a stellar episode for a lot of reasons - but I’m particularly fond of the fact that it’s an agatha christie parody and that the character the doctor saves is the 20 somethings forgotten spinster, abused by her rich relative because literally nobody cares. and 12’s big heroic moment in the episode is him looking at her and going ‘ok fixate on this little glowing object in my hand! this is your pain. and resentment. and trauma. and now it’s mine.’ and the epic music swells because the most heroic thing the doctor could do in this situation is to show radical empathy to a woman dispossessed of her independence and personhood. it’s such a quietly powerful moment and the fact that capaldi delivers those lines with the cold rationality of a scientist dissecting a fly… that’s when he got me!!

Someone should make an online quiz for doctor who fans where they show you a bunch of quotes from doctor who fans calling Clara Oswald a horrible person and you have to guess if they're quotes from a diehard Clara hater or a diehard Clara fan
