Qi Ye cast poster!!
This had started as a sketch, waaay back as I was still reading Qi Ye. The original is pretty different from this (I considered adding it in the post but I actually don't like it anymore haha), but the plan was already to make this big spread with most of the -more or less- important cast.
I will add here some thoughts about the whole piece, and I guess, Qi Ye itself. My main goal was probably to express my deep and intense feelings for Qi Ye, its grandness, and its awesome cast-- and along with that, flesh out my mental image of each of them, their personality, their style. Here is a table with the names, so we know who is whom, and so I can add some details about my perspective on them and their design.
Tumblr media
Jing Beiyuan has always come quite naturally. I just go for the "prettiest face" I ever came with in terms of : my own taste, and the features I find the most delicate. I'd argue he's the easiest character to draw for me across both QY and TYK. On this image, he's probably around 16 or 17. I find his expressions to be very fun to work on in general.
Ping An is also quite an easy character to draw, just for how specific Priest is when describing him.
Wu Xi's design is mainly inspired by a discussion with my friend Hanya, who talked about how, in SHL, Wu Xi more resembled a northern shaman than a southern shaman. It made me want to explore the designs and characteristics a bit more, and come up with more colourful fabrics, patterns, and darker skin color. Same goes for Ashinlae and Nuahar, to have them matching Wu Xi's aesthetic.
Ming Hua was included in this just because of the mess the mention of his name caused in the story. The two jealousy tantrums are just so delightful!!
Su Qingluan was made to resemble Jing Beiyuan, of course. What I wanted to reflect in her face was her frustration, mainly.
Ji Xiang and Hua Yue... Well. Nothing particular about their design either, but they had to be there. Of course, of course they had to be there.
Finally, an opportunity to draw Zishu with his fan and henchmen! Not mad that he kinda looks like a villain, here.
Lu Yu!! I drew him with an Ashinlae mask, since he disguises himself as Ashinlae. I included him because he matters a lot in my headcanons about Siji Manor. (it isn't specified, in Qi Ye, whether or not he's actually part of the manor, but I like to consider that he is for various reason that I may detail if I ever make a Siji Manor post)
I'll skip Jiang Xue and Liang Jiuxiao because their designs are steady for me, now.
I hesitated a lot for Helian Pei's pose, but ended up going for this one (looking bored, out of his depth, lost in the distance with his birds around him). I considered showing him with a bird in his hands, but I guess that's not the main vibe I get from him. And then, well, golden, flashy clothing, suited for an emperor.
Helian Zhao had to be in a showy armor, and I hated making it because it's so much work, haha. I took inspiration from an armor in NiF. I'm quite happy with how he came out in terms of both vibe and showiness.
I tried going full out on Helian Qi. Making him the villain that Qi Ye deserved. Dark, showy, elegant and horrible.
Helian Yi is also pretty solid for me, by now.
About the illustration itself, the main challenge was definitely to make a nice colour palette while still differenciating all the characters. I wanted to go with something intense, eerie, that could also complement the main tones I would go for (= red, purple, blue and green). I'm quite happy with how the golden tones, along with the green and reddish lights, make the whole thing come together. I struggled a little bit with the composition at first, but once I got the flow and the main figures down, it just happened quite easily. Anyway, I'm quite proud of this, and hope it conveys the love and admiration I have for Qi Ye well.

Hi, I'm a big fan of your blog and your gifs in general! I was wondering if you had any tutorial on how you color? Particularly your Wicked and Hadestown gifs look incredibly gorgeous and the colors really pop, and I'm so curious as to how you achieve those effects. Amazing work overall :D
hiii, oh my god thank you so much!! 🥺❤️
i'm happy to show you how i color my gifs but pls note that i basically have no idea what i'm doing, everything i know i taught myself via trial and error and this is just something i found works for me.
that being said, here's a quick (and very messy) bootleg coloring tutorial under the cut!
okay so, when it comes to making gifs and coloring in general, good source material is key. bright and clear videos make the coloring process SO much easier.
i picked an old 2010 wicked oberhausen boot for this tutorial. it doesn't have the highest resolution but the colors translate nicely and the lighting is pretty good as well.
Tumblr media
now, this is our base gif cropped and sharpened. i usually want my gifs to look as natural and as close to their base version as possible with just colors and contrast enhanced slightly. baby steps are important here!
first thing i do is add a brightness/contrast layer. these are my settings for this gif:
Tumblr media
i rarely ever go above 20 with either brightness or contrast. adding too much early on will make your gif look grainy in the end. our gif now looks like this:
Tumblr media
not much has changed but a little goes a long way, trust me. next up is a curves layer. i click the little arrow to open the drop down menu and select increase contrast (rgb). afterwards i reduce the opacity. for this gif i set it to 52%.
Tumblr media
this will darken the gif again but it also gets rid of these white spots on elphaba's dress which is great.
Tumblr media
next, we start playing around with colors. i usually use 3 color fill and one or two selective color layers. this really is just playing around until you find the settings that you think look good. for this gif i wanted to enhance the green and neutralise some of the yellow, so i went with two color fill layers first.
Tumblr media
green to slightly enhance the green of elphie's skin and blue to neutralise the yellow in glinda's hair.
Tumblr media
next we're going with a selective color layer. think of the colors you want to pop. for this gif the obvious choices are elphie's skin and glinda's dress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i added a second layer to further adjust the greens
Tumblr media
and ended up with this gif
Tumblr media
i then added another color fill layer, set it to multiply and reduced the opacity to 12
Tumblr media
followed by a color balance layer
Tumblr media
the purpose of these layers is to slightly "cool down" the gif, meaning they decrease orange/yellow undertones while enhancing the blue and purple ones.
Tumblr media
next up is a levels layer to add a tiny bit more brightness
Tumblr media
followed by a vibrance layer to make existing colors pop
Tumblr media
and another curves layer for more brightness/contrast with the opacity set to 50%
Tumblr media
our gif now looks like this:
Tumblr media
almost done! we're finishing up with a black and white gradient map layer for some more depth
Tumblr media
and a cooling filter to further reduce the yellow/orange tones of glinda's face and hair
Tumblr media
and that's it!
Tumblr media
so, here you go. this is my coloring process most of the time. sometimes i add more layers (on top or in between), other times i use less, it all depends on the specific scene and the mood i'm in lol.
now, could you leave out some of these steps? yeah, definitely. some layers probably don't even make that much of a difference but i like adding them anyway.
you can download the psd here. feel free to play around with my settings and add or delete layers as you see fit. hope this was at least somewhat helpful!

Hello, orokay!! I've adored your art for years now and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to draw and paint/render scars? I can never seem to get them to look right, any help is appreciated! Hope you're having a good year!
Hi anon, thank you so much!
Sorry this took a minute to reply to, I've been trying to figure out how I wanted to respond. For me, a lot of questions about how I do certain things are kind of tricky bc generally the answer is 'idk I just try things and tweak it until it feels right' and I don't really feel qualified to give art advice bc most of the time I'm just making stuff up as I go, but I know that's not really a helpful answer 😭
My art style tends to lean towards simple and stylized, so for scars I try to limit them to three colors at most, less if I feel like I can get away with it. It also depends a lot on the scar since there are different types of scars. Usually how I pick the colors I use is: one color darker than than the skin tone (shading), one slightly lighter than the skin tone for the injured flesh and occasionally an even lighter color for highlights. I'll include some examples under the cut. But please please please keep in mind wrt scars 99.9% of the time I'm just winging it and going off of what I think looks cool, I don't know anything about the science behind how people scar so please do your own research if you want to be accurate.
I'd say when approaching/researching scars you need to consider a few things:
Skin color of the person- Scars look different on different skin colors and different people scar differently. I think this is one of the biggest things to remember! Color pick for the scar based off of the character's skin tone and shade. The color you use for scar tissue on a person w/ light skin is going to look unrealistic and out of place on person with dark skin, doubly so if the undertone of their skin is different (ie. warm vs neutral vs cool undertones). It's so important to look up references because everyone scars differently and skin type can make a huge difference on how a person scars.
Color of the person's blood- same vibe as with blushing/lip color/etc. if your character has blue blood, the scar likely isn't going to be pink. This probably isn't something you're going to have to keep in mind a lot, but just in case. This also kind of ties into the first one because if a character has a non-human skin tone, like blue, and red blood then the scar is probably going to be more of a purple tone, for example.
Type of scar- think about the injury and what kind of scar would result from it. I'm not a doctor so idk how scarring works and generally go off of vibes, but if you want to make it as accurate as possible, I'd suggest looking up images of scars from whatever type of injury you want your character to have. I used to work with dogs and I scar easily so I have a lot of bite/scratch scars. Some of them are lighter than my skin and raised while others that were less deep are darker and on the surface of the skin (aka no texture). My brother has a very deep dog bite scar that's left a dent in his skin and light, pink and shiny scar tissue. Basically, if you know you have the stomach for it, I 100% suggest looking up examples of the type of injury you're thinking of so you can see how that injury tends to scar. Is it hypertrophic? Atrophic? Keloid?
How was it treated and how old is the scar?- is it a burn scar that received skin grafts? is it a surgical scar? stitches? did it heal well or was there infection? All of these things can change how a wound heals and scars. New scars are going to be much more stark, especially if they're still healing, and most scars fade over time. Examples under the cut...
Tumblr media
Some examples from my drawings over the years:
OC w/ healed burn w/ skin graft stylized and very simplified // really simple, sketchy scars on Narci:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This iteration of Blue's blood is green so the scar on her cheek is green (we're going to ignore her lips and the flush on her ears lol):
Tumblr media
raised scars on nikora and blair's cheeks:

Henry the V(no, no, no, no!)
Fandoms: Obey Me! Shall We Date? Characters: Leviathan, GN!Reader/MC Summary: You wake when the bed shifts beneath you, the weight of Leviathan settling back into his spot. Rolling over to throw your arm around him, you almost crush the bundle between your bodies.
1.1k // AO3 // Masterlist
Your hands glide over his empty spot. The sheets are wrinkled and cold, evidence of a body long gone. Creaking an eye open, you search the room to find him right where you expect — standing above his tub-bed, silhouetted by the pulsing blue lights of the aquarium. It’s hypnotic; watching the subtle bounce of his shoulders, hearing the subtle chirps in his voice.
He doesn’t know you’re awake yet, so he sings unfettered to the bundle in his arms. You let it lull you, too, the soft dips and rises of his song washing over your tired mind and soothing the leftover aches in your body from a tiring day. You wake when the bed shifts beneath you, the weight of Leviathan settling back into his spot.
Rolling over to throw your arm around him, you almost crush the bundle between your bodies. “Levi…” you whisper into the air.
“He was cold.” He sounds repentant, at least. “You know how the tub is.”
You do. It’s like the porcelain just draws in each and every chill of the room, then radiates the cold inside of its curved white walls. It took weeks of convincing for him to get a proper bed, and even then it was only so you would join him in his room again.
“I don’t see how you could stand it,” you tell him. “Aren’t snakes supposed to be cold blooded?”
“Ha ha. Very funny.” He tries for annoyed sarcasm, but you can see his smile in the low light. It makes your heart flutter, that smile he only ever shows to you.
You and the baby, that is.
“We still need to name him,” you say, running a finger along his chubby little cheek.
Leviathan groans your name, already tired of this conversation — you’ve had it around a hundred times in the week since you found the child. “I’ve told you a thousand times, Babe, that we can’t keep him.”
“What are you scared of?” you challenge. “Lucifer?”
“Yes.”
“He doesn’t know yet,” you counter. “Do you really think he’ll kick out his cute little nephew once he’s officially adopted?”
“Yes.”
“Even though his cute little brother is asking?”
Levi’s blush could light up the room. “I told you not to do that,” he grumbles.
“Do what?” You smile innocently, your teeth shining purple in the black lights above the bed.
“Randomly compliment me.” Leviathan pouts in his all-too adorable way. “I need at least a five-minute notice to prepare.”
“Why? Am I not allowed to tell my amazing, handsome, beautiful, loving boyfriend how awesome he is?”
Levi squeals something that sounds like a please don’t do that and covers his face as it actually does light up. You pull his hands away to kiss his knuckles and stare.
It doesn’t take much to make Leviathan blush, but it does take some weird combination of sleep deprivation and outside stimulation to trigger the bioluminescent cells in his skin. Your favorite way of activating it is to make him feel like he’s the most important thing in the world.
The multitude of colors swirl over his cheeks and down his neck, shifting between yellow and orange and blue. It’s beautiful, every single time, and staring at him when he glows spreads a warmth through your chest. But that’s not why you want to see it, this time.
The less he sleeps, the easier it is to make him glow. Sure, you gave him a (well-deserved) compliment, but it was only enough to give him a furious blush. He shouldn’t be lighting up like a Christmas tree. You pout at him, and you know he can see it from the way his lips mimic yours. He whispers your name again, followed by an apology.
You sigh and tuck his hair behind his ear. “Don’t apologize to me. You’re the one who’s going to suffer if you don’t go to bed early enough.”
“But I don’t have time! Henry and my games are always on my mind!”
“I can help with the games,” you say, already thinking about getting a lockbox to keep them in at night. “And Henry is fine, he can take care of himself.” You lift your head to peer at his tank over Leviathan’s shoulder.
“Not that Henry,” Levi whispers. You give him a sharp look that he presses his face into the pillow to avoid.
“Which Henry?” you ask, danger creeping into your voice. Levi peeks from his pillow and stares between you.
At the sleeping infant.
“Leviathan–” Damn, you wish he had a proper middle or last name to follow that up with. “We are not naming our child Henry,” you whisper-shout.
“Why not?” he whines, lifting himself onto his elbows to match your height. “My fish is named Henry. My snake was named Henry. I call you Henry.”
“That’s exactly why, Leviathan! There are too many Henry’s around! The poor thing is going to grow up confused.”
“But in TSL–”
“Forget TSL! I thought you didn’t even want to keep him!”
“I don’t!” Levi waves his hand in front of his face. “I don’t want to keep him. He’s a gluttony demon, he’ll eat us out of house and home–”
“We live with the king of gluttony demons. I’m sure we can manage.”
“–but we should call him something until his parents show up.”
You sigh again, falling back to the bed. “His parents aren’t going to show up.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Honey. Darling. Babe. We found him in an abandoned alleyway that we were only in because Lucifer was after us for playing hooky.”
“His parents could have left him there while they were working.”
“We waited three hours for someone to show up. No one is going to claim him.” You move your finger along the wispy hair atop the baby’s head, petting until he scrunches up his face. You stop to avoid waking him and watch as his face smooths back out.
“I know. I know. But still–”
“What about Christopher?” you interrupt. “As in the author of TSL?”
Levi’s lips tighten into a wobbly line, fighting the urge to smile. You shoot him your best pleading look, and you can see the exact moment you win.
“Fine,” he grumbles. He lightly taps the baby’s face. “Guess we’re parents now.” But he has a hard time holding his grumpy expression when Christopher grasps his finger in a tiny little hand. It melts right off his face and into the softest, warmest smile you’ve ever seen from him.
“I call dibs on ‘Daddy’, by the way,” Leviathan says.

hey raey! ur art is so pretty, reminds me of a strawberry soda float tbh. anyways I wanted to ask what your coloring process is if you don’t mind sharing :)
OH MY GOD HI THANK YOU FOR ASKING LOVE YOU FOREVER ALSO SORRY FOR ANSWERING KIND OF LATE I DONT CHECK MY ART ACC VERY OFTEN ANYMORE
ok so (this is a lighting tutorial not a rendering tutorial btw) here's my Ten Step (not) Program For Achieving Strawberry Soda Floatness
i actually usually start with pretty normal/true to reference colors bc i often don't have incredibly intense, neon lighting. however, im gonna be using the mari piece i just finished to demo, where i wanted to pinkify the drawing from the start.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here are some of the base colors (skin, hair, shirt): as you can see even the white shirt leans into saturation/color, and they're all kept around the red/pink area.
Tumblr media
ok so here (skipping about 15 steps) i already did the rendering using a color shifting method where instead of using multiply or directly lowering the luminosity (?) i shift the hue closer to the blue/purple category and decrease luminosity + slightly up saturation of the color. so like, on mari's skin you can see that the shadows are pink and purple rather than like. orange or something.
for the background i filled it with a lightish pink color and used the sunset gradient tool on a 30-50% opacity to establish the light source.
alright, here's where the fun begins.
Tumblr media
i started off by using an overlay layer (later lowered to 28%, but just use whatever looks good) on the darker colors where the light would shine the brightest. this layer originally included highlights on the face and shirt as well, but i took those off bc the yellow on dark colors looks like an orange and the yellow on lighter colors looks like a fucking highlighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first i added a sort of reflected/second light source of this fun little pink on soft light. i did 2 layers bc 1 wasn't bright enough for me. then on the lighter areas i added white highlights. important little tip: when i pick colors for overlays i usually use yellow as the primary light source, pink as a midtones/secondary light source, and blue or purple as the shadows. however, this is not a rule, just an example:
Tumblr media
in this drawing i have blue as the light source & red as the shadow. my tips for picking colors to overlay with: most programs/devices have an option for you to turn off the saturation. whichever color looks lightest is often best for the highlights. you can obviously change the brightness but yeah just make sure your highlights aren't darker than your shadows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
apologies for the inconsistent opacities, you get the idea. so i would like to make a disclaimer here that for my hxhbb piece (left) i used only one direct lighting overlay, which was the yellow. the amount of those overlays i use per piece varies. anyways i added a lighter green as a substitute for the white highlights on the darker colors
lil bit of a secret sauce: on an overlay layer i airbrushed yellow onto roughly half of her and pink on the other side. unifies the colors + lighting and just looks cool
okay now here's how to actually strawberry soda float-ify your art (sorry lol that was just background info):
Tumblr media
the sunset gradient map is your best friend here. you can really just fuck around with any gradient maps, doesn't really matter. now you can also change the brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. what i usually do is up the saturation & luminosity together: +50 saturation and +25-50 luminosity. experiment with blending modes and opacities and shit
when you're done, uhh, congratulations. the gradient maps are really carrying the entire thing the yellow and white lighting is just to torture myself with

Sunny Day Jack - First Sight
So... I’ve started posting my Sunny Day Jack fic on AO3. It’s the polished version of my previous tumblr post of the first part. I’m so used to showing snippets of the rough draft of of my Our Life: Beginnings & Always fan novelization here that it’s kind of weird to be posting my Sunny Day Jack stuff already. I guess that’s the perks of each part being very short.
On that note, I’ve got to wonder, would people prefer to just get notified of the polished chapter getting posted with a teaser in future tumblr posts, or if y’all like seeing these rough draft teasers before the final product. I mean, with Our Life I intend to start posting it after I finish it like, ya know, you usually do when writing a novel. Novel idea, I know. Sorry not sorry for the bad pun.
Well, either way, I hope you enjoy more of Jack musing about his sunshine.
Oh yeah, can’t forget to tag @channydraws and blame her again for getting me hooked on this game and inspired to make fics and art for it.
...
It was love at first sight.
His sunshine… Alice… was far more beautiful than Jack ever imagined, so beautiful he could hardly believe that she was real. He couldn’t help but admire the radiant person who pulled him out of that cold, dark, and lonely hell to bask in her warm glow. She had a delicate appearance not unlike a porcelain doll, pale with a petite stature that nevertheless was blessed with delightful curves. Waves of curled blonde hair so fair it bordered on white framed her angelic face like a halo, ending just past her shoulders.
Alice was asleep now, curled up on the beat up brown sofa he met her on. Saving him had taken so much out of her, and Jack had to restrain himself to let her sleep. There had barely been time for them to talk, to look into those lovely pale blue eyes of hers that were now peacefully closed. The clothes she wore - a black hoodie and gray pants - looked soft and cozy, perfect to help her get the rest that she deserved.
Jack could hardly tear his eyes away from her to take in details of his new surroundings. It was a decent sized living room with a scruffy purple carpet, illuminated more by the numerous fairy lights strung across the ceiling than the lone lamp or the glowing television screen. The place had clearly seen better days, as cracks and indents occasionally dotted the faded purple walls and ceiling. A few posters of cats had been taped over a few of these, as evidenced by one being revealed by a poster that had partially come loose. The furniture had a similar roughed up appearance, though there were electronic devices around that seemed out of a science fiction film.
Only the television really drew Jack’s attention away from his sunshine, more specifically the static that filled the screen and hissed at him in a way that made his skin crawl. It took him a little effort to find the television remote and figure out how to use it before he turned the cursed thing off.
Jack didn’t want to think about that hell. Not ever again.
With that settled, Jack returned his attention to what was most important - his sunshine. For now, he was content to sit on the floor beside Alice as close as he possibly could. He couldn’t bring himself to disturb her after she did so much to bring him here. He wanted to talk to her, to hear her beautiful voice again and learn more about her, but he had to be patient. There would be time for that later. He had time now.
Jack had all the time in the world to bask in his sunshine’s warm and happy light.
A part of Jack still struggled to accept that his endless nightmare was finally over. A whisper of doubt made him wonder if Alice and this place were just a sweet but cruel dream born from his fractured mind.
If he had to go back…
Jack shivered from cold memories that haunted him and clasped one of Alice’s hands between both of his.
Warm. Alice was so warm. She was real, far more real than anything Jack had ever known.
Jack pressed his forehead to the back of her fingers and focused on her warmth, the softness of her skin against his. He couldn’t get enough of her gentle warmth after being nothing but cold for so long. He wanted to be even closer, to twine himself in her warmth until nothing could ever separate them.
Nothing would separate them. Ever. Jack would never allow it. If someone dared try, then…
A chill that didn’t come from his memories of hell overtook Jack as his thoughts turned dark.
If someone tried to get between them, then they would have to disappear.
No one would take his sunshine away.
A small shiver ran through Alice, and she shifted a bit in his direction, her fingers curling around his gloved hands. That small act of clinging, her subconscious desire to get closer to him made Jack and his cold anger melt like snow in the sun.
Jack couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at his lips, and he began to slowly rub circles on the back of her hand with his thumbs. A soft, happy sigh escaped Alice as she relaxed once more, which made his heart melt all over again.
No, other people weren’t going to take Alice away from Jack. They couldn’t. No one could hope to break this special bond between them. What they had ran far deeper than anyone could ever understand. Their souls were joined, now and forever.
The only danger was if the hand holding him so gently chose to let him go.
The thought chilled Jack, and he had to fight the urge to tighten his grip on Alice. He didn’t understand the ‘why’ of a lot of things - why he was sent to hell, why he had been forgotten, why none of his friends tried to save him - but he understood that being with her now was a miracle that the two of them created together.
Alice wanted Jack here with her. She wanted his warmth, his love. She wanted him, needed him just as desperately as he needed her. The proof was right there in his hands, the way she clutched at him and drew closer to him unconsciously. He could feel it as keenly as he felt her warmth.
As long as Alice needed him, as long as Jack needed to be with her, then nothing would ever separate them.
Perhaps it seemed strange to need someone, to love someone so deeply before even knowing them, but that just went to show just how special their bond truly was. It didn’t have to make sense to anyone else but them. It didn’t matter if no one understood this connection between them. The world could think whatever it wanted. The only thing that mattered was the two of them.
If the world tried to get between them, then the world could just burn.
Jack tried to shake off such dark thoughts. He shouldn’t be making himself upset like this. He should be happy. He was happy. His sunshine found him, saved him. Alice shared her beautiful warm light with him after he had been cold and alone for so long. It wouldn’t do any good for either of them if he kept dwelling on his fears now, not when he had more important things to focus on.
Jack needed to make this delicate bond between him and Alice to be so strong that nothing in the world could ever break it. He had to make her so happy that she would never even think of letting him go.
No matter what it took.
