Hi Bel,
I keep seeing comments about people complaining about the quality of destiny’s writing and story in the last few weeks. I haven’t really engaged with destiny since season of defiance, what’s currently gotten everyone so riled up? I thought that people were enjoying Season of the Deep/Witch in terms of narrative, why is Season of the Wish causing people to deride the destiny writing staff again?
I don't know!
Deep and Witch have been absolute bangers in every aspect to me. I've been enjoying all interactions and lore tabs we've received. A lot of them are stuff that we've never had before, a lot of reunions and closures, a lot of development and interactions between characters who you wouldn't really think would have much in common.
Sloane's return and healing from what she's been through has been fantastic, Drifter opening up with her to help her because he also got help from others was fantastic, Sloane reuniting with Aisha and Shayura brought me to tears (Shayura's descent into madness was triggered by immense trauma of Sloane staying on Titan and Titan disappearing), everything with Sloane and Zavala...
Witch was just incredible in every single way; the focus on Eris, the amount of Eris and Ikora content!!!!! Everything about Xivu and Savathun and their interactions together!! Eris finally fulfilling her goal she promised Savathun YEARS ago, getting that closure.
Wish so far has been equally great to me. All the new stuff about Ahamkara is amazing, finally giving us proof for long-standing speculation about Ahamkara and how they aren't universally evil creatures and expanding on them as a species. I love all interactions we've had so far; finally we have Petra back, Mara's singleminded focus on figuring out how to defeat the Witness and her continuous work to improve as a person, ALL SJUR MENTIONS!!!!! I won't talk about the "leak" because we have no context for it so I will wait for the full story to be revealed before I can pass judgment; something that I think should be a lesson to learn from this entire year. Maybe wait for the story to finish before judging the story.
Literally everything this past year that involves Osiris, but especially this season now that he's back in his element with the Vex. And of course every little detail we get of him and Saint. Osiris honestly shaped this year for me with everything that he's done to uncover the biggest mysteries. I think a big reason is that a lot of people just don't like Osiris, which I consider a massive skill issue.
Other than that, I don't know what are the issues people have besides just not being interested in any of these storylines and attributing it to a nebulous "bad writing" claim. I also genuinely believe that way too many people get wrapped up too much in fandom, imagine storylines they want to see and then get disappointed when the actual story doesn't go there. Almost like people forget that this isn't their story and these aren't their characters. A lot of it is also fandom completely warping characters into not what they actually are and then feeling like the canon story is the one that's wrong.
Whatever is the reason, I guess everyone is entitled to their perspective of the story and everyone is free to explore the story in different ways through fanfics and AUs and whatever. I do that too!
But I would definitely ask people to be normal with how they engage in criticism, especially in the current state of affairs. Writers are developers; they experience a ton of harassment and negativity from the community and also from inside the company. And they are online: they can see what we're saying. It's been documented that community commentary has been used to harass writers:
Tumblr media
Imprint this into your brain and never forget what these people had to go through. Let's not forget also the way people treated Seth Dickinson on social media when he was active with Destiny fans. "Fans" were actively arguing with him about his own work (telling him that HE is wrong) and were utterly disgusting towards him when he tried explaining what he wrote. His works are now hailed as the best writing in Destiny and people want him back. If I were him, I wouldn't want to come back ngl, not with how he was treated and not with how fans are still treating writers (and hey, Seth wrote LF Collector's Edition! So he was back, technically, this year!). Let's not forget that a lot of writers are members of various marginalised groups. And I'd definitely not want to go back with zero support from leadership.
Which is also an important aspect for all developers, including writers: sometimes they have orders they may not like, but can't argue against. They do the best they can with what they're given, the time they have and directions they receive. And with that in mind, I am enjoying everything we've gotten this year, obviously with some specific complaints about things I didn't particularly enjoy (like the universally mid reception of Defiance; I've spoken about my gripes with it before, a big one being the shafting of Suraya who should've at least been mentioned in a lore tab).
I can tell that there is passion in their work, even if maybe they would prefer to do more with it, but can't. Maybe even if they want to take different routes, but can't. But from what we got, I can feel that they care about this world and these characters. I can tell that someone lovingly wrote about Sloane and her friendships with two grieving women. I can tell that they deeply cared about Sloane's friendship with Zavala and that they loved showing us Saint and Drifter caring about a fellow trauma survivor.
I can tell that the writers are immensely careful and loving towards Eris; everything she went through was crafted with love and passion from both writers and her VA. Eris' story is such a fundamental aspect of Destiny and I can tell that this was important to the writing team and that they gave her everything they could to do justice to her character and her arc and her healing and her release from the cycle she was trapped in for so long.
I can tell that there are writers who care a lot about Osiris and Saint and their relationship. I can tell that someone cared a lot about expanding on Ahamkara and giving them more personalities. I can tell that someone cared DEEPLY about Sjur and Mara and that her repeated mentions are the passionate work of writers who want us to remember her.
I could go on. And I know that not everyone sees it this way, which is fine; we all have different ways of perceiving stories. I enjoy discussing things we in the fandom disagree on and I enjoy hearing different perspectives! Unfortunately, this has recently become rarer and rarer. And for the love of god, please try and treat writers with some respect, especially now, especially those who are still working and doing their best with the shitty situation they're in. None of the cries of "poor devs" ring true to me unless the same is given to writers, instead of treating them like punching bags.

I love your meta about Porchay being the most savage of them all. You are right. KimChay were the most terrifying couple. Also I now need some fic where Porchay proposes the wedding like in your meta, because it is all I am thinking about on the loop now:D. And Porchay would definitely do it, given more time. And if Kim wasn't an idiot and didn't break Porchay's heart (and his own), he could be happily married before even KinnPorsche and VegasPete had their engagement:DD
Anon, Kim didn't live at home. He made his own money away from the family business. He was bullying Big. He was on his own little mission. Porchay was left to live alone. He was bold with his idol. He went directly to Kim once he figured out he was part of the mafia, then he blocked him! They were a match made in hell!
Tumblr media
I know Vegas x Pete and Kinn x Porsche have their points, but Kim and Porchay had to break up because if not, they would have made that entire family cry at least twice a week and killed Korn.
Tumblr media
I am an open advocate for "Kill Your Shitty Father" in these BLs, and I truly believe Kim would have done it, especially if he had Porchay by his side. Kim would be trying to figure out a way to kill their father while Kinn would still be trying to please him, and Porchay would be helping Kim figure out a way to kill his dad while Porsche was trying to please Kinn.
Tumblr media
Remember when the three boys found out Korn was dead? KIM DID NOT BELIEVE IT! He knows you can't kill the devil that easily.
Tumblr media
So, yeah, you are absolutly right that Kim and Porchay would have gotten married before everyone else because 1) they would have found a way to use WIK's star power and Kim's mafia leverage to threaten government officials into legalizing marriage equality, and 2) they would have used the wedding as a ruse to kill Korn.
Tumblr media
And that's why Kim and Porchay had to break up, so Porchay would not murder Korn, Kim could continue to be a superstar, and Macau could finally shoot his shot!

Okay, but like
As someone who personally disliked the fandom characterization of Mangey as a child who is basically a wild animal
Which of course meant that (even though this standard was not applied to other equally feral boscage maze characters) if you even dared to have ships involving Mangey it was considered "beastiality"
Season 3 was so vindicating for me. Like as someone who always characterized him as selectively mute/largely nonverbal and with less palatable autism, it was so great to see the proof in the pudding that he is just as capable of being more than just the group dog thought like any other mobian and the hilarity of him being surprisingly adept with technology. Like god those few Sails/Mangey interactions were so so good

"… I've offended you."
"No! No, not at all, I just —" Jillian frowned. "Can you do that? Isn't it forbidden?"
Mother Superion raised an eyebrow.
"Kissing other women?"
"Yes! Or is that by any chance devoid of erotic connotations amongst nuns?"
"No, it isn't… Are you planning on telling on me to the Pope?"
"What? No! Why would I do that? I'm just confused. You took vows, didn't you?"
"I did, but it almost seems as if you had."
"… Did I irrevocably fuck this up?"
"Do you want…?"
"Yes. Yes, please, just shut me up."
And Suzanne obliged, kissing her again.

I knew you sent something, @dominustempori and it took me a minute to find it, but hey! I found it! And here we go!
---
Lucas wandered around the house, looking for something to do… anything, really. He would have joined his father on the ship, but according to him and uncle Winslow, it would be best if Lucas stayed put for now.
(“Not because I don’t want you with me, kiddo, but because the ship has a lot of broken pieces and I don’t want you to get hurt.” Guybrush explained, kneeling down to be at eye level with him.
“But I can help!” Lucas pouted. “I can help, really!” Guybrush just let out a laugh and ruffled his hair a little. “I know, and you can any other time… just not with this one. I promise to make it up to you later, alright? I won’t be gone for long.”)
He huffed. He could have helped, he knew he could have. He just… didn’t know how, especially with how everything was so tall. But he’s just like his dad, Lucas Threepwood could solve that problem, no doubt.
Instead, he continued to pout and went upstairs, planning on going to his room and think of something to do when he heard humming from his parents’ room.
Curiosity got the best of him as Lucas peeked his head inside, seeing the neatly made bed in the room with the two night stands: one neatly organized with a book or two stacked and the other an absolute mess filled with too many books and parchments. He continued looking around when he spotted his mom sitting in front of a mirror fixing up her hair.
Perking up with finally someone in the room (let alone house), Lucas bee-line to his mother’s side and stood on his toes to catch a glimpse of the table filled with different smelling bottles and ribbons.
A chuckle was heard and a hand on his head.
“Hello to you too.” Elaine greeted him.
“Hello!” Lucas beamed, looking between his mom and the table.
“What are you up to?” She asked, going back to brushing her hair.
“Nothing. I’m bored.” He moved his hands to her lap, plopping a chin on her thigh. “Dad made me bored.”
“Did he now?” Elaine chuckled. “That’s not very nice of him.”
“It’s not. It’s…um…” he contemplated, trying to think of the rude his mom would say before perking up, “rude! It’s very rude.”
“I would imagine so.”
Lucas continued watching her brush her hair, noticing how she was parting her hair into three strands and began criss-crossing it over one another. His eyes widened as he stared.
Elaine, noting the expression, smirked. “Something the matter, Lucas?”
“What are you doing?” He asked, point-blank.
“Hm? Oh, I’m braiding my hair.”
“Why?”
She shrugged. “I just feel like it, nice to have it out of the way before we run some–”
“I want that!”
Elaine stopped and looked at Lucas who appeared to have stars in his eyes as he stood up straighter, a small hop in place was noticeable as well.
“You want a braid?” She asked, just out of clarification considering his hair was not nearly long enough for there to be a braid but she was not about to spoil the small child’s mood with that tidbit.
Lucas, however, as an answer, hopped more in place.
“Alright, let’s make you a braid.” Elaine moved from her seat and picked up her son to sit in it in her place. She of course noticed as she was reaching for the brush, kicking his feet, his telltale sign of excitement. “Hold still for a moment, alright?”
“Okay!” He smiled, looking as much as he could at his reflection, or at least, half his head.
Slowing his feet kicking to as much of a minimum as he could, Lucas felt his mother’s hands on his head followed by the gentle stroke of the hair brush. Slowly, he closed his eyes, feeling safe and comforted as she went to work grabbing some strands of his hair. He knew he did not have hair nearly as long as his parents, but whenever he saw them putting their hair up, he wanted to join in.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, dear?”
“Do you braid dad’s hair?” Lucas asked, opening his eyes and looking at his mother’s reflection.
“Sometimes.” Elaine answered. “Although your father likes to put it in a ponytail and call it a day.”
“Oh. Does he braid your hair?” He then asked.
She smiled. “Yes.”
“Does he do a good job? You do a good job with your hair.” Lucas smiled when he warranted a laugh out of her.
“He tries, darling. And that’s what matters.” Elaine decided to do two more braids, feeling the child would want to show off his new do.
“I want long hair.” He decided. “Like you and dad.”
“Yeah? And what will you do with all that hair?” She asked, trying to not discourage him.
“Hmm…” Lucas kicked his feet in thought. “I’d… I’d braid it. Have dad’s ponytail. Oh! Maybe beads?”
“Beads?” Elaine sounded surprised.
“Mm-hmm!”
“Well, that sounds rather exciting. And with that…” she tied the ribbon to hold the last of the small braids in his hair, “we’re done.”
Lifting Lucas up so he could see himself better in the mirror. It was three very small braids that were on one side of his head, each a different color ribbon. Lucas looked at himself closer, leaning in as much as he could and shaking his head, watching the braids bounce a little and smiled that famous Threepwood grin as he turned to look at her.
“I love it!” He grinned, his feet kicking a little. “Thank you!”
“You look absolutely wonderful.” Elaine smiled in return, giving him a small kiss on the cheek which got a belly giggle from Lucas. “Want to show your father your new look?”
“Yeah!”

Some off the cuff 1k of Skirk & Tartaglia (skirtaru???) hcs before 4.2 proves me wildly wrong, they are very much a dynamic in process to be changed as we see more of them and as I think and consider them more, but I wanna see them interact so BAD.
Anyway. Tartaglia is an idiot who develops a crush, or at least something like a crush, on anyone who can give him a good fight. Obviously there are plenty of people who can just kick his ass- he's ranked at the bottom of the Harbingers. But they all suck, and there's no passion when they fight! They don't appreciate it the way Tartaglia does! So it's not a good fight and those assholes don't count!
So I think little Tartaglia was doomed the second he saw a very very pretty lady with a very very sharp sword and she immediately beat the shit out of him. Like she awakened something in him right then and there, unfortunately for the rest of the world haha
And then! Not only could she beat him one handed! But she took the time to teach him! And this! This was exactly what Tartaglia had wanted when he ran away from home with nothing but some food and his sword! He'd wanted an adventure! He'd wanted something new and different and wild!
And he can have that now, with Skirk and the Abyss! So his crush could have instantly dissolved right there, but it didn't, because Skirk was weird and interesting and Tartaglia adored that.
((Wheezing imagining Tartaglia trying to show off because he wants to impress his shifu, and she genuinely is impressed because Tartaglia progressed so fast, but then she pops his teenage boy ego with a pin and he deflates sjzjnskdkz))
He develops such an endless amount of respect and admiration for her. He's so happy and so proud of himself when he masters the Foul Legacy, because this was a goal laid by his shifu and hell yeah, he blew it out of the water!! And I'd like to think this was when Skirk said those words in his profile-
"You shall ever be the eye of the storm,"
"And the clashing of steel shall ever accompany you."
"The pitch-black memory of stepping into uttermost darkness,"
"Shall, at last, become the strength by which you will overturn this world."
-with Tartaglia knelt before her and her sword at his cheek, as though she were knighting him. And Tartaglia realizes then that oh. He likes it here. He likes being in the Abyss. He likes being with Skirk. He likes hunting and killing and surviving here in the Abyss with Skirk. Morepesok is and will always be home, but it was stagnant there. Too much of the same. No room for growth.
But the Abyss is boundless possibility to explore in every direction, and Skirk has never flinched away from him even once. Tartaglia can be as violent and bloodthirsty as he wants; Skirk is worse. She gives zero shits. She loves to fight and hunt and kill and make things bleed. Tartaglia is free to explore and revel in all of his worst inclinations and instincts and that is what the Abyss and Skirk become to him. Freedom.
And then he falls out of the Abyss just as suddenly as he had fallen into it. He didn't even get to say goodbye.
And it's not all bad or anything. Tartaglia isn't miserable. He's plenty capable of making his own happiness. He brings his own joy everywhere he goes (derogatory, unfortunate for everyone else ndkdjdjkd) and he genuinely likes being around other people. He would have missed a lot of things if he'd been permanently trapped.
But now there is an itch that he can't scratch. And it's driving him nuts. And he misses Skirk. She was fun to be around. He liked her.
He finds himself seeing things in everyday life and wishing he could show her. He pulls out ingredients in the kitchen for dinner and wants her to eat his special dish and show off how good he can cook. He reads through reports about the Abyss and he never finds what he's looking for (a swordswoman, an entrance, anything-), but he wants to ask her her opinions about them. He sees a really nice sword and wonders if she would like it. Little things.
Tartaglia decides he's going to find her. Even if it's just for a chance to thank her. Even if it takes years, decades. He just wants to see her again.
And then, it finally happens! They really do get to reunite! I have no idea what will happen in the archon quest of course, but like. I really like the idea that after things settle down, Skirk decides to stay for a while. She doesn't really want to live here or anything, but she's curious. She wants to see what Teyvat is like. She especially wants to see Snezhnaya, like Tartaglia used to talk about. And Tartaglia decides to go with her, he's an experienced traveler, a man of the world after all! He'll take her wherever she'd like to go.
And I'd love for them to say goodbye to The Traveler and Paimon and depart from Fontaine on a classic will-they-won't-they sort of vibe, where it's obvious that Tartaglia has Some Feelings about Skirk, but it's not clear how Skirk really feels about him yet. But it's the kind of thing where it's hopeful, and you want to root for the guy to get his love interest haha.
(The Traveler and Paimon bump into them a few months later and Paimon chides Tartaglia because Childe have you seriously not confessed yet the hell have you been doing all this time, which he responds to with hey, Skirk is a classy lady, give me time to do it right! and meanwhile The Traveler can see around Tartaglia to where Skirk is sitting at their campfire, manspreading on a fallen log, eating raw meat with blood on her face and dripping down her arms BNSKXJSMKDMD)

my controversial(ish, maybe, idk) take on steddy hands is that two semi-apparently contradictory things have to happen first and they are both along the stizzy axis: 1) stede and izzy have to each recognize the other as competent. this takes more growth in stede’s part bc... look my dears, my loves, perhaps even my beloveds. as endearing as stede is, he still ends s1 as an incompetent pirate. he’s never taken a single ship and he has spent his entire life in the lap of luxury. (for his fuckery, he lets the danish board their ship. they live, but they don’t take any property - which is the entire fucking point of piracy). the boy needs to face a material hardship. it builds character, much like working customer service.
and 2.) izzy needs to accept some mild hedonism. pleasure for the sake of pleasure is gooooooood. anyone who tells you different is selling something. this is the one that takes growth on izzy’s part - he doesn’t see value in pleasure alone and like, god, my man perhaps i wish i vibed with you less but...
if these don’t both happen, i can enjoy it, but i can’t believe it, if you feel me. stede is a man who is insecure bc he doesn’t think that he deserves what he has... and up to this point this has lowkey been true. and izzy is fixated on being needed to the point where imo being wanted doesn’t occur to him. (ed is a whole ‘nother bag of worms and this post is toooooo Fucking Long)
but in the end, they need all need to both want and need each other. i think need comes first, but want shouldn’t be short to follow. the want has staying power.
also you can’t dom someone while also being a total incompetent i didn’t say that yes i did (guess im drunk enough)

Okay so uh, my brain is usually incapable of thinking abt fluff for some reason but after reading and later thinking a bit about @000marie198 's idea of shatterverse variants of Tails just being chaotic siblings I blacked out and hour later this apeared on my phone screen-
__________
× Nine is the Sonic of the squad when Sonic's not around, as in pestering Tails and his two associates to take apropreate breaks and abide by their bedtimes, while also making sure that no forbidden substances such as coffee or energy drinks exist in the workshop's premises
+Tails specifically is extremely annoyed by this, yet fascinated and jealous at the same time, because how can you just?? Put everything down and go to bed???? Not even letting the thought of pulling an all-nighter pass your mind????
+But make no mistake Nine is still the most moraly corrupt of the quatro so he will absolutely be the little demon on Tails's shoulder approving of every single highly deadly invention or upgrade Tails thinks of.
× Thanks to the constant exposure to technology, tools and observing Tails' gadget making, Mangey has become a master disassembler and an uncompromisable threat to everything that's not welded together or a solid slab of matierial in the first place. If he puts his mind to it and no one disturbs him, he will take apart anything you put in his little hands. Tails finds that pretty usefull safety testing. (But also potentially dangerous and annoying when you try to type in your keyboard but all of the buttons are torn out and placed in a pile right next to it like damn ok, oh shit the dawer is aflling apart ah fuck-)
+One night, Mangey discovered a stray screwdriver and the residens of the workshop were for a suprise morning when they rather quickly found out every single hinge on all of the visible doors was undone. (yes even the fridge, Nine nearly got killed by the heavy doors falling on him)
× They sometimes play chess and while Sails prided himself by saying he already knows the rules and game perfectly, without a fail, he always ends up loosing to Nine who only makes sure to rub it in his face. This applies to most table and card games.
+Mangey was trying to eat the chess pieces at first but after observing a feew games and having the rules explained he is actually pretty good at the game??? (He doesn't really know what he's doing either and sometimes a piece or two gets lost to the stomach acids when the others aren't looking but oh well, Sails can always carve out another one)
+Honestly Tails shouldn't have been expecting to have a regular table game with any of the people he knows, especially himself.
× And what ego and pride Sails looses to Nine in board and card games, he gets back in the quite frequent sparing maches he initiates. Because boi is he salty about always loosing, and will he put all that salt on his blade and swing it at Nine all day and any day he sees the edgelord isn't visibly busy or in a bad mood (latter of is suprisingly and plesantly not as often as it once used to be)
+And Nine has tried to pick up a sword multiple times but it's just doesn't mesh well at all with the fighting style he preferred and was used to with his mechanical tails, which only got in the way. He will admit swords are cool and they're even cooler when someone skilled swings them, but he will eat a Chao alive before looking Sails straight in the face and telling him that.
× Something something rock paper scissors becomes a bit of an inside joke to the quatro after Mangey shows a literal rock when they were using this very professional deciding method on "who will clean up the workshop's mess after Tails' rather ambitious last project."
+Sails and Nine protested that it should be Tails alone since he caused the whole mess in the first place, why is he dragging them into this when all they've been doing is braking swords outside and they dutifully clened that mess up each time, but than Tails hit them with the "well I'm the one and only reason any of you exist here rn and also provide a roof over your heads so you go by my rules" anyway Nine lost the rock paper scissors and he absolutely made sure everyone knew he was pissed about it.
+They use rock papers scissors to also decide who gets to spent the most time with sonic and rocks are thrown when results are not exactly favorable. (No one gets seriously hurt I promise)

Sometimes I do wonder if, with my being a vastly powerful shipping machine, if I'm actually just subconsciously "pairing the spares" or maybe I just really, really enjoy shipping. I do think it's gotta be the latter, because it's rare that I ship characters together just to make another couple (or to not intrude on another relationship - which most of you who know me, know I would much sooner poly that shit up). Even if my only reasoning is "I think it would be funny" I still LIKE to explore it.. whether it works out or not.. whether it goes anywhere or fizzles out immediately...
I get really into character dynamics and how people interact with each other in general. I like to ponder the possibilities. I like to put characters in a shaker bottle and listen to the little metal ball mix 'em up. I guess sometimes that does end up like "you get a relationship! and you get a relationship! and YOU get a-" on and on but mostly it's just?? Fun?? It's just fun. I think it's fun.

Beautiful thing happened today: the guy doing headshots had these brilliant nautical tattoos and I, a known ship nerd, pointed them out and said I thought they were brilliant. And he launched into how for 12 years he worked on a tall ship at one point as the captain. He got all excited telling me about it and asked if I was working on any ships. I said no, but I’d love to, have wanted to ever since I was a kid; he asks if I know so-and-so, to call him and even just being a passenger will get you credit with skippers. And at this point I’m grinning and laughing and I really want to talk more about sailing and historical stuff with this guy. He goes “Right tilt your head this way, you wanna look warm and approachable yet tough for any skippers!” Probably the best headshots I’ll ever get, those smiles were sincere. Then he recommended me his favourite book - its 700 pages and it’s 300 years of historical fiction called “We, The Drowned” which I’m checking out asap because it sounds brilliant

the juxtaposition between silver saying that his story is "without relevance" vs him saying that flint knows "all of me that I can bear to be known" like. my guy!! john!! i can't even put into words what i'm thinking right now like. his story has had such a profound impact on him, in such a negative way, that he can't put it into words, he can't bring himself to tell another person, that he's convinced himself that it doesn't matter. not to bring hannibal into it again but like, it reminds me of that scene where he says "nothing happened to me. i happened" characters with no backstory no justifications no nothing god they're so interesting i have to know more but such is the nature of the story that we don't Get to know more because these characters can't bring themselves to tell us god jesus john silver you-
