I think Dean Winchester is a good example of the complexity of man. Men, specifically. The way they portrayed his masculinity as a sort of crown to behold, and then hid gentleness behind it.

Like at first they made his baseline personality revolve on being a womanizer, which at the time, was like peak male behavior. The more chicks you ditched, the bigger man you were. It’s obviously just a front he puts up, but the implications of it, the why of it all, is just so much more profound than what the writers meant it to be.

It’s fascinating to me because I feel like I’m watching a picture book on the ideal man, but each frame is painted by a different illustrator with their own art style. Like throughout the series we get to see what being a man means to that specific writer, which for Dean means that he ends up transforming into different versions of perceived toughness and, since each rendition of himself is different, it translates as a sort of lack of identity.

And although men have different notions of what their ideal macho man is, the image of femininity they have seems to be quite stagnant. So when they add a quote on quote “unexpected” depth to him—a moment of softness, of love, of nurture and gentleness that seems more woman than man—it ends up being the only part of his character that is constant because it is drawn from the only part of a woman they know.

AND WHAT THIS MEANS is that the side of him that takes on the role of a mother, shows love, sacrifice, comradery is—in the end—the only part of him that is true. And his character ends up showcasing a sorrowful painting of a man unable to connect with the gentleness at his core.

And it’s soo sad and makes me sooo feral.
