As the Autumn Equinox approaches, I am reminded of the myth of Persephone, who while out gathering flowers with her mother Demeter, was kidnapped by Hades and imprisoned in the underworld. A distraught Demeter abandoned her duties as goddess of the grain and harvest, so the crops withered horribly in Persephone's absence. Ultimately, Demeter begged Zeus to intervene, who decided that since Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds while in the underworld, there she must spend 6 months of each year. The Autumn Equinox marks Persephone's annual return to the underworld, and the beginning of the more barren months caused by Demeter's heartbreak. Fiery petrified wood captures the essence of the underworld, while faceted garnets evoke the pomegranate seeds that sealed Persephone's fate. 14k gold fill crescent moons flank the garnets, echoing a triple moon and recalling the seasonal cycles of life and death, waxing and waning. I am so thrilled to have finally captured my Descent of Persephone theme in earring form. In ancient times, tribal archers affixed turquoise to their bows to ensure their arrows reached the intended target. It was also believed that to look at turquoise directly after gazing at the moon in a particular phase would bring luck and prosperity. The Shoot for the Moon Pendant is inspired by the union of these narratives. A deep blue, mystical piece of incredibly collectible and rare Bisbee turquoise, with signature reddish brown matrix, sits atop a handmade sterling crescent moon adorned with arrows and intricate details. It hangs long and low on 30 inches of sterling chain, and will be available in my next shop update on Thursday at 8pm est. I've missed this classic design of mine and am excited to bring it back into regular rotation, along with a few new variations of it.
