My Once in a while meeting: One night with a man who writes Chinese poetry (prose )
Tumblr media
When I was living in Tokyo, I changed my boarding house frequently, but I was in Nogata-cho, Nakano-ward for about two years. I thought that I would live in Nogata (means field)because the tiger lives in Nogata, probably because I become a tiger when I drink alcohol (?).(tiger means bad drunken.)
There are many second-hand bookstore in Nogata and Koenji, Suginami-ward, and I also like old books, so I went into Nogata's store and searched for my only book closely.
Suddenly, an old man called out to me. He said, "Your eyes are unusual, wonderful. Would you like to go out with me for a moment?"
The eye light that I was supposed to have ... This could be taken as a Cheeky guy seen from the eyes from a delinquent boy, but in this case, it was good that he called out.
His place of residence is in Koenji, and I lived in Koenji before I moved to Nogata, so it was like a hometown. Hey, I accompanied him.
Guided to my whereabouts, I shared with him each other's identities. He is a poet who writes Chinese poetry, and was introduced to some of the Chinese poetries he actually wrote. He also said, "Hero knows hero."
Sake was served, and I was allowed to eat his hearty food. It was good sake and gastronomy. While doing so, I read aloud Chinese poetry. He seemed happy with my reading.
With such a pleasant exchange, I vomited after drinking a little too much alcohol. He blames it and says, " What is vomiting food? --go out!"
I also left his house in response to the words of quarrel, saying, "If you don't like vomiting, don't bother calling me!" We just drank too much each other. Both were big tigers.
We have never met again since then. But now that I call myself a poet, I sometimes look back on what that encounter was. Does that Chinese poetry become the source of snow in me and support the poetry?
The encounter at that time would be "Ichi-go-ichi-e(一期一会)"(= Once in a while) in the phrase. Not only poetry, but his way of doing household chores and cooking is alive in me now.
(2018.09.23)
(Note: Tigers and big tigers are people who get drunken and become aggressive.)
Later, when I told an elder woman what happened, she said, "You should have apologized to him." I never thought of that, and I was surprised. We shared a good time with each other until I was blamed. The last was "both fighters are bad", and I thought we were both good and bad.
I have no intention of apologizing to him.

Let's Read: A Requiem for Char: The Red Comet of My Youth - Chapter 1
by Shūichi Ikeda
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This post will be an overview of the first chapter, Steps to Becoming an Actor.
Please note this isn't a full summary by any means, just a highlight of parts I found interesting. Very long post under the cut!
Tumblr media
Shūichi Ikeda was born on December 2, 1949 in Numabukuro in Nakano Ward, Tokyo. Growing up in the years after World War II, Ikeda recalls that although the scars of the war still remained here and there, the entire country was filled with an upwards surging momentum that could be described as "hope after a long period of suffering".
In 1958, he was invited by a friend to join Komadori Theater Company (劇団こまどり). Founded in 1948, it was a prestigious children's theater company that later produced many famous actors, including familiar names like Maaya Sakamoto, Daisuke Namikawa, and Ikeda's wife, Sakiko Tamagawa. He passed the entrance exam and started his career as an actor at only eight years old.
Along with movies, radio had a large presence in popular entertainment in those days. The first experience that Ikeda and the other child actors had was with radio dramas, broadcast on NHK radio. In elementary school, it was his daily routine to go to the NHK studio after school. There he co-starred with popular talents of the time.
In a funny side note, Ikeda recalls fond memories of the bento lunches they had at the studio. The rank of the bento changed depending on the rank of the actor with whom he was working. One particular instance he noted was how when the famous Musei Tokugawa starred in a lead role, lunch was eel bento, a rare delicacy back then.
As time went on, TV dramas became more popular, and Ikeda was offered his first role on television only three months after he joined Komadori. It was a simple role - a child crying in the corner in the background of a shot - but he remembers it fondly as a memorable first step into the world of acting.
Tumblr media
In his junior high days, Ikeda starred in Gashintare (がしんたれ), a TV adaptation of the autobiography of playwright Kazuo Kikuta, and the movie Robō no Ishi (路傍の石, "Roadside Stone"), two works that made him seriously consider the job of "actor" for the first time.
In this chapter, Ikeda also talks about his relationship with famed Japanese film actor Yūjirō Ishihara. The two met as co-stars on the TV drama Shi no Hakubutsushi - Chīsaki Tatakai (死の博物誌 – 小さき闘い, The Natural History of Death – A Small Battle). Ikeda says he was immediately struck by his aura the moment he entered the rehearsal room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ikeda recalls how on set, Ishihara jokingly addressed him as “Shū-sensei”, as a nod to the fact Ikeda was much more experienced with TV dramas, despite being much younger.
“Shū-sensei, you're a junior high school student, but you’re more senior than me as a TV actor, aren't you?”
In response, Ikeda replied,
“Well then, I'll call you Yu-sensei. On TV, I may be the sensei, but if I appear in a movie with you, please be the sensei.”
Ikeda fondly remembers him as a star that never faded no matter how much time had passed. Sadly, Ishihara passed away July 17th, 1985, and he never got the chance to film on a movie set with him.
In his words, “Even now, I keep in mind the way of life as an actor that Yujiro-san taught me. And I still call out to him...as Yu-sensei.”
Tumblr media
In the spring of 1964, Ikeda began his role as the star of Jiro Monogatari (次郎物語), a TV drama based on the novel of the same name. The story depicts Japan in the early Shōwa period as seen from the perspective of Jiro Honda, a boy of a former samurai family.
The show was a hit among viewers of all ages, and ended up running as a nationally broadcast drama for two years. However, due to the popularity, from that point forward in his childhood acting career, Ikeda was typecast as a similar character - or as he refers to it, the image of “Jiro Shonen”, “a boy in a kasuri kimono”.
Ikeda was around 24 or 25 years old when Kohei Miyauchi asked him if he would be interested in doing voice-over work. The role was in a one-shot overseas drama for NHK about a group of three train robbers. Ikeda remembers struggling to adjust, thinking it might not be the best fit after all.
Tumblr media
Soon after he was offered a role in André Cayatte's Mourir d'aimer as the dub voice for Bruno Pradal. At first he was hesitant, but accepted after finding out he would be alongside Tomoko Naraoka (dubbing Annie Girardot), whom he had worked with earlier in his career during his time as a child actor.
Ikeda recalls how this experience helped change his perspective on voice over work.
"Rather than trying to match the voice of the actor on the screen or strictly matching the actual lip-syncing, I felt how the actor and director put together the character, and translated that atmosphere into Japanese-style acting."
After appearing as a voice actor in other overseas dramas, a new opportunity arose. The person who approached him was Kazuya Tatekabe, of Doraemon fame. The two became friends and often went drinking with their fellow co-stars after work.
Tumblr media
It was Tatekabe who introduced Ikeda to Noriyoshi Matsuura, who worked as an editor and sound director on various anime. Through some gentle persuading, he convinced Ikeda to give anime a try (while drunk, he admits), specifically the character Radik in Invincible Steel Man Daitarn 3.
However, Ikeda found the speed of the process and inability to preview the material beforehand (like he was used to with film voice overs) overwhelming. He remembers thinking, "this is my first and last anime".
Despite this, Matsuura convinced him to give one more audition a try, with the promise they could go for drinks afterwards. Ikeda agreed, though wasn't enthusiastic about it.
...That audition was for the role of Amuro Ray in the upcoming anime Mobile Suit Gundam.
Tumblr media
~
That's all for Chapter 1! I'll continue with these posts for each chapter as I go. Of course I recommend checking out the book for yourself if possible as I've left out a lot of content here for brevity.

WEEK 16 BLOG
This week I read pages 184 - 215 of the book “Kafka on the Shore” by Harukami Murakami
The most important sentence of the week can be found on page 194 “after the strange incident in the hills of Yamanashi, Nakata went back to school in Tokyo. He regain consciousness and physically was fine, but his memory had been wiped clean, and he never gained the ability to read and write” Here’s why. In this section of the book we start to find out more of Nakatas background history while he’s traveling to Kobe with Hino we find out that Nakata has an older brother who is a department head at a place called Itoh- chew and his youngest brother works at an office called Emiteei. According to him, he’s the only one thats dumb in his family. he doesn’t understand difficult things and can only stay in a Nikano Ward so he doesn’t get lost. He speaks only two cats and eats eel once in a while. after what he did to Johnny Walker, the guy who dismembered cats, he no longer could stay in Nakano anymore. Nakata is headed to Shikoku. While waiting for Hoshino He can see the sea from where he sat, when he was little he and his family had gone to the seaside any number of times, but these memories weren’t clear for him, and felt like it was taken in another world so now he can’t recall seeing the sea at all. This all happened after the incident in the hills of Yamanashi, where he was beat badly by his teacher. After beginning, cautiousness and physically was fine his memory had been wiped clean, and he never gained ability to read and right he wasn’t able to do anything that other student from school can do. He never bothered anyone it would only sit quietly in a corner of the classroom. Although this wasn’t bothering him, being alone made that he can be lost in his own world.
While reading the book, I get more shocked by each time I read. This book starts to get more deep and we learn more about each person being mentioned in the book. The story of Nakata starts to become deeper. We start learning about his background and after the accident in Yamanashi and seems to start connecting with the other story, as he is headed to shikoku where Kafka is staying at. I can predict that sooner or later they will run into each other and I’m most excited to see what happens when they do.

Japan that no one knows. A loser rises in a new land.
A plaque inside the shrine reads as follows
This Inari Shrine is located in the northeastern corner of the 21,000 square meter estate of the Horie family, who were the feudal lords of Nakano Village in the Edo period (1603-1868). Since ancient times, the direction of northeast was regarded as an abhorrent "kimon," or "demon's gate" where ogres and misfortune would enter. For this reason, the Horie family enshrined a deity on their property to ward off the evil spirits. According to the Horie family documents, there is a record of a shrine called Ichigami enshrined in Nakanojuku for the prosperity and safety of the market, and it is thought that this shrine may have been Myotoku Inari. In the Taisho era (1912-1926), the local people took over the Inari Shrine from the Horie family, and it has remained in use to this day. The shrine was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II, However, a carved fox in a water pot dating from 1867 (Keio 3) provides a faint glimpse of a bygone era. In addition to Myotoku Inari, there are two other shrines enshrined here: Akiba Shrine for fire prevention and Haruna Shrine for praying for rain.

Miho Nakano in Princess From the Moon (Kon Ichikawa, 1987)
Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Ayako Wakao, Yasuko Sawaguchi, Koji Ishizaka, Fujio Takita, Jun Hamamura. Screenplay: Shin’ya Hidaka, Kon Ichikawa, Mitsutoshi Ishigama, Ryuzo Kikushima, based on a story by Shikibu Murasaki. Cinematography: Setsuo Kobayashi. Film editing: Chizuko Osada. Music: Kensaku Tanikawa.
In eighth-century Japan, a man (Toshiro Mifune) and his wife (Ayako Wakao) are mourning the death of their 5-year-old daughter, Kaya. They live beside a forest of bamboo, whose stalks the man cuts and turns into baskets and other artifacts, which he sells to make a living. One night they see a bright light and their hut is shaken by a huge tremor. The next morning, when the man goes out to investigate he finds near his daughter's grave a large egg-shaped object. It begins to crack open and as he watches, a baby crawls from it and begins to grow rapidly until it assumes the form of his dead child (Miho Nakano). The man and his wife raise the girl as their daughter, Kaya, and discover that the egg-shaped object from which she emerged is pure gold, so they become rich enough to move into a large house. Kaya swiftly grows into a young woman (Yasuko Sawaguchi) whose beauty attracts high-born suitors. But she has brought with her a small crystal ball that eventually reveals her secret: She is from the moon, the sole survivor when the ship that was carrying her crashed. To ward off her suitors, she proposes impossible tasks to win her hand. And then the ball reveals that at the next full moon, a ship will arrive to carry her home. The entire realm has fallen in love with Kaya, and on the night of the full moon, troops are stationed about the house to shoot down any arriving ships. Up to this point, Kon Ichikawa's Princess From the Moon has been a charmingly magical fantasy film, a smart adaptation of an ancient Japanese folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, with beautiful sets by Shinobu Muraki, costumes by Emi Wada, and color cinematography by Setsuo Kobayashi. But suddenly Ichikawa imposes on the setting a spaceship out of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977), and Kaya is drawn up into it in flowing robes and accompanied by what appear to be glowing cherubs, an image that recalls Renaissance paintings of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, like this one by Rubens:
Tumblr media
It's a startling shift in tone and technique, to say the least, especially when compounded by the insertion of a pop song, "Stay With Me," by Peter Cetera behind the end credits. Critics, too, were jarred by the overlaying of a sci-fi trope on a traditional tale, but audiences seemed to like it. A somewhat more traditional version of the story, The Tale of the Princess Kagya (Isao Takahata, 2013), was produced by Studio Ghibli and was nominated for the animated feature Oscar.
