National Macadamia Nut Day
Enjoy a healthy, wholesome, but incredibly tasty snack of roasted macademia nuts, generally imported from Australia, on Macadamia Nut Day.
Australia is famous for many things, mostly its unusual array of beasts that are beautiful and deadly in equal measure. Guests every year dream of seeing the Kangaroo, the Koala, and even the unusual yet beautiful platypus in their natural habitat. Few know, however, that the humble and glorious macadamia nut finds its home here. National Macadamia Nut Day raises awareness of this delicious tree nut and its long and interesting history.
History of National Macadamia Nut Day
Macadamia trees are native to Australia, and are a genus of trees that comprises for separate species, each producing a delicious and edible nut. Known also as the Hawaii nut (more on that later), the maroochi nut, Queensland nut, and even the curiously named bauple nut, it has spread all over the world from its humble origins down under. These days it is one of the most highly sought after nuts, most famous for being the crowning feature of the White chocolate macadamia nut cookie, arguably one of the best cookies to come into existence since the chocolate chip cookie.
The nut itself was first discovered (at least among Europeans) by Allan Cunningham in 1828, but it took another 29 years for it to be named. It was named by Ferdinand von Mueller, a German-Australian Chemist and botanist, after his good friend John Macadam. In 1882 the trees were cultivated in Hawaii to help protect sugar cane, but they didn’t come into agricultural cultivation until 1888. From there it has consistently exploded into popularity, and has become a mainstay of the nut industry.
How to celebrate National Macadamia Nut Day
We suggest getting yourself a big old container of roasted macadamia nuts and snacking away as a solid and healthy start to your celebrations. Then you can take the time to indulge in as many white chocolate macadamia nuts as you can consume. Take no shame, we know there’s nothing in the world that makes National Macadamia Nut Day a joy to experience than reveling in the gluttonous consumption of mass quantities of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies. If you’re really feeling adventurous, make some yourself!

FFXIV Write, Day 28 - Blunt
Minti does a drug. Ryssthota observes - for science.
CW: Drugs, Hallucinations, Mental Health.
Logbook:
Documentation of the inhalation of one (1) crushed Morbol root, using "rolling papers" provided by the subject.
Intent: Determine if Blue Mage crystal ownership, combined with inhalation of root from a wild morbol root, will grant the inhaler the ability "Bad Breath."
Hypothesis: Morbol root inhalation will not produce new magical abilities in test subject. A hostile encounter is required for absorbing the morbol's aether.
Background: The Encyclopedia Eorzea tells us that "The morbol is a terrible beast that moves upon its slime-covered vines and roots. Highly aggressive, it kills both animals and plants with a combination of its noxious breath and ceaselessly flailing tendrils." (Manne 279) Of importance today is the "sweet-smelling gas" the seedkin produces, which Manne, in her Eorzea Geographic article "Morbol Physiology" (1565) says induces sleep by inhalation.
Blue Mages are spellcasters of infamous reputation, recently introduced to Eorzea and her sister nations by the supposed Mage "Martyn." Observers report that wielders of this magic, found outside the opposites of black and white magic, draw on aether from wild creatures. This enables them to, say, cast Shiva's icy bow attack, or dash forward as aggressively as Ifrit. The practice has become so popular that Ul'dah has opened a Masked Carnivale, a series of challenges for anyone interested in solving puzzling battle scenarios.
Test Subject: Our test subject for today is one Miss Minti Chocolate, a rava viera employed by Gage Acquisitions. She reports to be a semi-accomplished blue mage. "Something to do when I get beast tribe jobs," she told me before the experiment.
Method: Miss Chocolate will be seated in a colorful environment (the basement of Gage Acquisition's headquarters), given a "blunt" seasoned with crushed morbol root, and observed for five hours. Snacks and enrichment through a live aquarium will be provided as requested by the test subject.
-----
Hour One: Subject has fully inhaled the morbol root sample. Early reactions include repeated coughing; feelings of elation; lightheadedness; and repeated staring into the observer's eyes.
Subject comments: "You are so nice. I like your hair. Why is your hair short? It is moving back and forth. *sings* 'Back- and forth. Back- and forth. Our love goooooes-"
Hour 2: Coughing has not stopped, although there is a pause of five minutes in between bouts. Subject is fixated on the live aquarium, and is attempting to feed the "fish with Thancred's face" some of the provided snacks, specifically the bowl of peanuts.
Subject comments: "Nuts. Nuts. Macadamia nuts. Pistachios. Why do nuts taste like nuts? Nuts are nutty nut nuts. NUTKIN! Thancred has a nutkin. NUTS." (Attempting to relay the subject's emphasis on certain words.)
Hour 3: Subject is attempting to show me what a grenade's Self Destruct looks like. Gently redirecting her by asking to see a physical copy of her blue mage spellbook.
Subject comments: "Did, did, did you know you can *Self Destruct* in Kugane, and and and a *white mage* can resurrect you on that lamppost, you don't even need to climb the Tower-"
Hour 4 1/2: Subject has abruptly passed out on the floor. Help from Nyx and Apple Silverberg requested, to raise subject from floor and move them to their private quarters.
Subject comments: Subject is currently incapable of producing speech.
Conclusions: Will have to wait until Miss Chocolate wakes up. I am feeling quite lightheaded myself, and fear that I will begin to see Thancred Waters' face everywhere I look. Not that I would mind, but.
(Miss Chocolate put me up to this. This is partly scientific intent, partly for our mutual amusement.)

made some more stuff for my food world-building today! These two things are from the nation Betii in Qedrah (which doesn't have anything to do with Seafoam I've just had this idea for this soup for a while now and wanted to try it). Something about Qedrah is that the different cultures have a lot of brightly colored vegetarian/vegan dishes because of their connection to the earth through their magic (no, not earth-bending). Most everything in Qedrah is very saturated both with color and nutrients, so they're able to get by without eating a lot of meat (which is usually reserved for the well-to-do or royals).
So this would be a simple meal made and shared by the traveling tribes of Betii, usually made on the day that they settle in a new location after a long day of riding or walking because it's easy to throw together.
Tumblr media
this is a purple sweet potato soup seasoned with a spice blend with a bit of heat and cooled down with a touch of coconut milk and an avocado cilantro lime crema
Tumblr media
this is a sweet honey bread that has toasted macadamia nuts, dried mango, golden raisins, dates kneaded into four of the six strands of the plait. It can be made without the fruits and nuts, but they're usually added to eat while traveling to make the plaited buns (yes I know this is an entire loaf) heartier and stick with them until they can stop for the night

大家好! I tried falafel for the first time with soup noodles as well congee and veggies (refer to the previous post where I bought them and tau kwa - firm tofu - for meals at home). Because they're not meat and thus, not fatty, the texture was a little dry, but the flavour was yummy and, when paired with moist noodles and congee, they're actually pretty good! I've started eating them and tau kwa for breakfast and dinner at home. Still, it's nice to dine out for breakfast sometimes because dim sum is divine.

Speaking of dim sum, that's what SW and I ate when we caught up. I had truffle har gow and siew mai (prawn and pork dumplings), fu pi (tofu skin) rolls with different stuffings and a serving of veggies; SW chose her own items. The meal was yummy and very filling. More importantly, it was lovely seeing my dear friend again and catching up on each other's lives. The next time we'll meet again is probably in 2 - 3 months, thus, this get together felt extra special.

Besides Din Tai Fung, other restaurants now offer healthier menus for health-conscious and elderly customers. I brought Pa to 1 of these restaurants for a meal. Collagen soup with fish maw was served first with rice, followed by ginseng chicken along with our pu er cha (Pu Erh tea), steamed fish slices (VERY fresh and delicious) and finally, stirfried lotus root, sweet peas, celery, hei mu er (tree ear mushrooms), water chestnuts as well as macadamia nuts. Healthier menus are great; I feel assured that Pa is eating well when we dine out together. I'll look out for more of these, as well as vegetarian and vegan cafes to bring him to!

Lots of delicious goodness during a gathering, including loads of tasty carbs, steamed fish and veggies. There was enough food for the 8 of us and, most importantly, we had fun! Pa was glad that I'm much more relaxed than I'd been for a very long while. Prolonged heavy stress isn't good for health, no matter how nutritiously we eat or how regularly we exercise. I'm in a better place mentally and emotionally than I was a few weeks ago.

The last time I ate fastfood was at Pizza Hut on 4 July; time flies, it's been over a month! Also, in a few days, we celebrate our National Day 🇸🇬 My beloved country is even dearer to me after we weathered the covid pandemic together. As we teeter on the edge of a global recession, I wish our nation the resilience to weather the storm if it should come, the strength to withstand pressure no matter how tough, the compassion to maintain friendships and trust with others and the wisdom to make the best choices for us. 下次见!
