Let’s Talk #WeatheringWithYou

Weathering With You is beautifully animated...

...but it is just an OK film.

For a review of Weathering With You, feel free to keep reading. There will be spoilers.

A teenager named Hodaka runs away to Tokyo, which has been enduring nonstop rain. After acquiring a job and living with his boss, who previously saved him, he begins to write an article about the “Sunshine Girl”. He later saves a girl named Hina and finds out she is the aforementioned person who has a special ability to stop the rain and let the sunshine in.

The two, alongside her younger brother Nagasi, make some money off her ability for people who want sunshine for their events. However, Hina’s powers come at a price. She has to sacrifice herself or else the rain will never end. Additionally, when they are outed by the press, the police are on the lookout for all three of them.

The film is from director/writer Makoto Shinkai, who previously worked on Your Name, the most successful anime film of all time at the box office. This film even features cameos from the main leads of Your Name.

Like Your Name, the film is beautifully animated, with its most prominent element being water. Most of the film is set in the rain, with several shots showing downpours and rain drops hitting the ground. Each droplet is animated slightly different from the others and the backgrounds have somewhat of a blue filter. Even the tears are colored with a different hue of blue to differentiate them from the rain, which is especially obvious during the climax.

During the few outdoor sunny sequences, a bright color palette reminiscent of Wolf Children and Sword Art Online is on full display.

This film is unfortunately bogged down by several factors.

The pacing is inconsistent. The first act does a great job setting up the premise, with Hodaka realistically struggling to live in Tokyo and meeting Hina. The second act is where the film begins to fall apart, as it tries to focus not only on Hina and Hodoka but also Keisuke’s struggles with his daughter and Natsumi looking for a job. By the time the third act begins, the film forces itself through four possible endings. The first is Hina sacrificing herself, the second is Hodoka traveling through the gate to save her, the third is Tokyo sinking while he boringly narrates, and the fourth and final time being the prolonged epilogue.

As for the epilogue, it is reminiscent of Your Name by being set after a time skip. It surprisingly shows the consequences of Hodoka saving Hina, with Tokyo now partially submerged. Seeing the two reunite ended the film on a positive note, although some may be disappointed they never kissed.

Most of the film’s characters are fully developed. Keisuke struggles to see his daughter due to her asthma, Natsumi looks for work, and Hina struggles with both her power and being Nagasi’s guardian. Hodoka, on the other hand, is horribly bland. 

His justification for running away in the first place was underwhelming, only saying in the vaguest of terms he didn’t want to go back home. The film never bothers to expand upon his past, leaving him as a whiny Disney knockoff protagonist who just wants more from life. The only difference between him and someone like Ralph or Rapunzel are the cops getting involved.

Another major issue the film had was the music. The songs by RADWIMPS sound great and are enjoyable. Their placement within the film, on the other hand, was mixed. There are several moments where the songs work, but it was difficult to take the climax seriously when the vocals were louder than the dialogue. To put it in comparison, it would be like if Eminem was played over the final battle from Avengers: Endgame.

Weathering With You is an OK film. It has great animation, a good premise, and good supporting characters, but is bogged down by inconsistent pacing, badly placed music, and a bland protagonist. If you liked Your Name or are a fan of romantic fantasies, you might like this film. Otherwise, I can only recommend waiting to see this film either when it is available for rent or streaming.

The film is rated PG-13 and currently in theaters. Check your local theater’s showtimes carefully, as the film is being distributed in both Japanese (with subtitles) and English.

Tenki No Ko - Hodaka’s Choices?

This is the first post I’ve made on tumblr, so forgive me if it’s total crap. Because it most likely would be. Post would probably grow more informal the more I write, please forgive me. I just needed somewhere to vent about Tenki no Ko. There are MAJOR spoilers ahead, so be warned.

Tenki No Ko does a great job showcasing human nature at its finest. The choice that Hodaka makes to literally sacrifice housing in Tokyo is pretty dang good. Yes, bringing Hina back is great and all but there must have been lives destroyed by the flooding and snow.

The cliche is usually that of the hero sacrificing their loved ones for the world, but this time the hero picked the maiden over the world. The choice that Hodaka makes is alone his responsibility and he understands that there will be lives weighing down on his conscience, yet he would do anything to be with Hina even if it means dooming the world.

The audience clearly sees the destruction bringing Hina back is causing yet cannot help but side with Hodaka, because they too understand the feeling Hodaka has or are too deeply invested into both Hodaka and Hina. Hodaka is selfish but that is just how we are built. Humans are selfish creatures intrinsically. The sacrifice of Hina highlights an important point of how far are we willing to go for our loved ones?

I know many who would hurt or even kill for them but are we even able to cause floods and bring property destruction to about half (?) the country? Not many of us would be able to answer that question decisively. 

The audience is shown what Hodaka sees and feels; we can only see things from his perspective. Hodaka also keeps and fires the gun not once but TWO times, both to protect Hina. He’s an extremely loyal person, so to him he’s willing to go to extreme ends to stay with Hina. Tokyo is probably still raining and is already half submerged in water. 

But yet, Hodaka doesn’t have the moral obligation to save tokyo and the other cities and prevent skyrocketing housing prices. Hina might have felt the obligation since she lives there and all. But Hodaka doesn’t and that is what shocks us. We are used to see the hero save the world and shit. So someone choosing not to is a shock and we realise, hey they have a choice too. Is it wrong? Probably. But what can we do about it?

You can only open the door, you can’t force them to walk through it. He doesn’t owe the residents anything. He doesn’t own the world anything. He is just living his life till a girl entered and swept through his world. It just so happened she had weather powers.

Nonetheless, no choice would have been the right choice.

Side note: the food and scenery were great. Nagi too.
