Dwarf fortress challenge run - new frontiers
The theme
Dwarf fortress is often about getting wealth and resources and trying to win fame and aclaim before the fort collapses, but I felt like something a little different. This challenge is one of trying to hang on despite terrible odds, with failures perhaps paving the way for future... less terrible failures.
The scenario
Fleeing from a disaster, a small number of dwarves attempt to restart their civilisation in an unfamiliar environment and build a haven to attract and shelter the other scattered survivors.
The challenge
The world is 100 years old, with few civilisations and very few sites. Beast levels are very high while savagery is merely high, and resources are frequent.
Starting from a struggling civilisation (which there is likely to be given the world settings) and picking a settlement location as far from the threat that you are running from as possible (given other desired embark location factors), the rules are:
Start with no animals except two mules to pull the wagon and a cat or two - attempting to domesticate the local wildlife is part of the challenge
No home caravans - the fort’s location is too remote and the civilisation’s situation too dire for regular trade
Population cap starts at 10 and goes up by 10 each year - the fort is hard to get to and intentionally hidden so word is slow to spread, and the number of survivors is limited
The goal
I will be posting in character summaries of the events of each year, roughly illustrated with sketches, documenting the dwarves attempting to revive their civilisation where no dwarf has gone before.

Perry is quiet all the way home, not answering any of Rhett’s questions. Rhett can’t help but wonder if he’s to blame for the problems with the Tillersons. Been in a fight with Trevor once or twice, Perry had a knack for always blaming the problems on him. Sure, neither of the two families were particularly happy about the other, but the hate between Trevor and Rhett ran deep.
When they arrive home, Perry quietly walks to the house and right as Rhett reaches him, he could swear that Perry almost looks sad. Now more worried than ever, Rhett sits down at the table opposite his father, taking his hat off before placing it on the table.
“What’s wrong, Pa?”
Royal doesn’t look up right away, just stares into his glass, swirling the whiskey around before he downs it all in one sip. “I have something to tell you, boy, and you’re not gonna like it.” He says, before raising his gaze to meet Rhett’s.
“Wayne Tillerson just informed me that Trevor is to be wedded into a wealthy family.”
Frowning, Rhett doesn’t quite understand what that has to do with them. The only thing going through his mind is whoever the poor girl might be getting hitched to a Tillerson. “But… Why is that important?”
“Dammit, Rhett! Are you stupid?” Royal shouts, before composing himself. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he lets out a heavy sigh, before looking at Rhett again.
“You know they want our land. If that intended betrothal goes through, the Tillerson’s will have quite the fortune at their disposal. Enough to pay off our debts and take over the deed to our farm.”
Rhett falls back into his chair, not really knowing what to say or think. They had to stop this somehow. They can’t just lose the farm like this, especially not to the Tillersons. That’s when Rhett notices how all eyes are on him. How they all stare at him with gloomy eyes.
“Wait. Who’s the girl?”
Tumblr media
Never before had he ridden his horse this fast and hard. Only a faint murmur in the background, he can hardly hear Perry anymore. He’s riding behind him, trying to stop him, so Rhett just pushes Peaches harder. Soon the town comes into view and as he turns down the main road, he nearly rides into deputy Mark. He just rides on, the roars of Mark filling the air.
When he finally finds you, it’s too late. Standing at the station, you’re engaged in a conversation with a woman that can only be your mother. And to Rhett’s horror, your father is shaking hands with Trevor Tillerson.
It’s like all the air is punched out of him and for a minute he can’t breathe. He just watches in horror as Trevor takes your hand in his, placing a soft kiss on the back of your hand, just like Rhett did mere hours ago.
You break into a smile as you give a small curtsy to Trevor, your hand still in his as you walk with him away from the station. Fighting the bile building in his throat, Rhett has to look away. It can’t be, it simply can’t.
Finally caught up with Rhett, Perry brings his horse to a halt just in time to see you walking away with your parents and Trevor. Putting a hand on Rhett’s shoulder, Perry tries to comfort his little brother, knowing full well nothing he could say would help.
“Come on, Rhett. Let’s go home.”
Rhett pulls away from Perry’s hold, turning towards the saloon. He needs a drink, needs something to make him forget what he’s just seen. Jumping off his horse, he walks up the stairs to the saloon, pushing the swinging doors open with such force that every person turns to look at him. Trotting after him, Perry offers a small apology before joining Rhett at the bar.
Placing his hat on the bar, Perry gestures for the barkeep to bring the whiskey over. Next to him Rhett sniffles, his eyes fixedont the bar. When the first glass is poured, he downs it in one go. The next one follows quickly and before an hour has gone, Rhett and Perry are already drunk.
“I was never good enough for her, was I?” Rhett asks sadly, pouring more whiskey into his glass, spilling golden drops onto the wooden surface.
Before Perry can answer, Rhett sucks his teeth, looking at him. “I was only kidding myself. I’ll never be good enough for anyone.”
A pair of slender arms wrap around Rhett, delicate fingers dancing over his chest. Daisy leans in, giving him a kiss on the cheek before flashing her brightest smile.
“You know you’ve always been good enough for me, Rhett.”
“Be gone, Daisy.” Perry hisses through his teeth, batting her away. She just pouts, giving off a little sigh as she walks away. Rhett turns and looks after her, a new wave of sorrow washing over him. Is this his life now? No other woman wants him and the one he had set his eyes on, is beyond his reach. So for now, he drowns his sorrows with Perry at his side.
Until the early hours of the evening, he downs more whiskey than any man should be able to handle. Perry is snoring next to him, passed out over the bar. Rhett just chuckles, downing another shot.
“‘ey John? Johnny? A-another.” he hiccups, swaying in his seat. But John just gently removes the glass, telling Rhett it’s time to go. Bastard. Grabbing his hat, Rhett stands and staggers towards the door. Once out on the porch, he inhales the fresh evening air.
A pair of familiar arms wrap around him once more as Daisy places soft kisses on his cheek. Rhett stops her hand, but she just smiles as she leans in closer to him.
“Come on, Rhett. Please…” she purrs into his ear, her hands roaming his chest, “You know I can make you feel good. Make you forget all about little Miss Miller.”
He shouldn’t. He really shouldn’t, but if can’t have you, maybe he’ll have to settle for Daisy. Anything is better than the despair he’s feeling. He turns around and looks at Daisy, her fake smile wide as she speaks to him, pretending to be in love with him when really all she’s in love with is his money. He doesn’t listen to her words, he doesn’t care anymore.
Crashing his lips to Daisy’s, Rhett pushes her against the wall of the saloon. She breaks away, only to drag him into the alley between the saloon and the neighboring house, claiming his lips once more. She kisses him with vigor, moaning against his lips, yet Rhett barely responds to her touch. He doesn’t want her, but she’s here and she can help him dull the ache in his heart.
He wonders what it would be like if it were you in his arms, you pinned between him and the wall. How his lips would dance over the soft skin of your neck, pulling the sweetest whimpers from you. His lips on yours as he tears open your dress, feeling that soft skin no one else has felt. His mouth would find the swell of your breasts, his tongue playing with your sensitive buds as his fingers find their way under your dress, slipping into your wet heat.
His cock hardens as he sees you in his mind, pretending the feverish touches from Daisy is you. He knows he’s kidding himself, that you’ll never touch him like this, but as Daisy’s hand cups his hard length he imagines her hand is yours.
Daisy makes quick work of his belt and pants, opening them just enough for her to pull out his weeping cock. Rhett groans as she begins working his length, out of pleasure or frustration, he doesn’t know. It’s not you, he thinks as he thrusts into Daisy’s hand, his heart aching. He knows he’ll regret this, but a moment with Daisy is better than feeling lonely.
“Oh Lord…”
Barely breaking away from Daisy, he looks towards the street, ready to tell whoever interrupted them to piss off, but his blood runs cold when he sees you. Standing there in the faint glow from the lights of the saloon, your face is twisted in horror as you take in the sight before you. Stepping away from Daisy, Rhett fumbles with his pants as he walks towards you on unsteady feet.
“Miss Miller, I…” he tries desperately when you take a step backwards. He finally manages to close the last button and waddles towards you, his drunk state making it hard to walk straight. But he manages to catch you by the wrist, stopping you.
“Get your hands off of me, Rhett Abbott!” you hiss, your voice almost breaking. Rhett can see the tears in your eyes and if his heart wasn’t on the verge of breaking before, it certainly is now.
“Please, Miss Miller. Just… listen to me.”
“There are no words that can explain this, Mr. Abbott.” You manage to sob out, before running around the corner. When Rhett moves to run after you, he sees Trevor Tillerson standing at the corner with a huge smirk on his face.
“I knew I could count on you to screw this up yourself.” He grins, before walking away, joining his brothers at the saloon. You are already gone.
Tumblr media
The ride to your house the next day is the longest and hardest Rhett has ever had. He’s not even sure what to say when he reaches you, but he’s gotta at least try to make things right. He can’t lose you before he’s even had the chance to have you.
As your little house comes into view, he sees you sitting on the front porch, book in hand. Images of how he could sit there beside you, having you teach him how to read flashes before his eyes. How you would read to him and in time, maybe him to you. Have you lay there, head in his lap as he would run his fingers through your hair.
When he comes closer, you look up and your bright smile gives away to a frown. Before you can run inside, Rhett jumps off his horse and closes the distance.
“Please, Miss Miller. If I could just-”
“What, Mr. Abbott?!” you pause, looking at him with eyes that make his heart break. He sees how deeply he hurt you as your eyes fill with tears. “I’m not interested in anything you could have to say.”
“I’m in love with you, Miss Miller.” he whispers, his voice fragile.
You stop, your breath hitching in your throat. Turning back to him, Rhett knows it’s now or never. You may belong to another man, but maybe your heart was still his to win?
“If you love me, why were you with… her?”
“When I saw you with Trevor… My heart broke.” He says softly, closing the distance between the two of you. “I thought the only woman I’ve ever felt anything for was gone.”
Stopping mere inches away from you, he looks down into your eyes hoping you can see the sincerity in his eyes. How much he regrets breaking your faith in him. Your heart.
“I was drunk and stupid.”
“Something that’s a regular occurence, if I’m to believe the talk around town.” You bite at him. Your words are nothing he hasn't heard before, but they still sting. But he deserves that.
“That’s true. A drunk that has slept with every willing woman in town and has had his fair share of fist fights.” He counters. You move to go, but he stops you, a gentle hold around your wrist. His thumb rubs soothing circles on your soft skin, more to soothe him than you. “But that was all before you.”
Walking closer, his broad body cages you in, pining you to the wall. Rhett knows it’s a bold move, but this might be his only chance to make you listen.
“I know I’m not good enough for you, but I want you. Now and always. But if your heart hasn't made the same choice, tell me now so I won’t live in the misery of not knowing.”
Leaning his arm against the wall, he brings his face closer to you, lips so close to yours. He aches to taste you, to feel the softness of your lips. His eyes find yours, begging for an answer.
“I think I’ve loved you from the moment I first looked into those deep blue eyes.” you whisper softly.
Rhett cups your cheek, looking deeply into your beautiful eyes like he can see into your soul. Rhett closes the distance, his lips finally meeting yours. For a second, it’s like time stands still. All that exists are your lips against his. Your soft, plumb lips he could kiss for the rest of his days.
Breaking away for air, you give Rhett a smile so soft his heart skips a beat. Right then, he knows he wants to look at that smile forever. He leans forward, capturing your lips once more. It starts off slow and sweet, but soon turns more hungry. Needy. Weeks of want poured into the kiss, as Rhett pulls you even closer, deepening the kiss further.
A small whimper leaves you, causing Rhett to groan in response. His body is already aching for you, wanting you more than any woman ever before. He wants to give in, to take you right here against the wall. Feel your warm heat around his cock.
But he stops himself, knowing he’ll have to prove he’s changed. That you’re not like everyone else. He breaks away, but only a few inches, his hot breath ghosting over your lips. Rhett looks into your eyes, his heart pounding harder than ever before.
“I may not have much, but I'll give you everything I’ve got… Just give me a chance”

Tempestthrift Year 1: The same sodden rats in the same sodden traps
Everyone warned us about the agitated wildlife. Beware the agitated giant frogs they said. But the biggest problems facing the newly founded Tempestthrift were with wildlife that was anything but. Let me explain.
We arrived in a cold and dismal part of the continent, where the river is only fully thawed in summer and the only thing it has going for it is distance from the acursed goblins of The Momentous Lies. Burrowing underground found us mud, mud and more mud, but we eventually hit stone and finally had materials to make things with. Things were looking up.
Tumblr media
a bit of a sorry sight
Summer saw the arrival of a family of three, which caused some concern among the populus as their daughter was 18 and only wanted to play with toys, and none of the advanced party could remember at what age they had ceased playing with toys. The word vampire was whispered in the chapel, but no accusations were made and when the dwarf in question declared she was now a grown peasant in autumn we alll felt very foolish. Her mother has proved a hard working miner so is above suspicion, and her father spent most of a month repeatedly catching the same rat after we accidentally shut the cat outside, so if he’s part of any scheme we don’t have much to worry about.
Then came the rat men, scurrying about all over until one of them ends up in the cage traps set in the hope of catching that giant moose everyone swears they’ve seen about. The rat man is not a useful animal so we let him go. He runs into the trap again. Meanwhile a rat woman has got herself caught in another cage trap, and about six dwarves spend almost a whole season emptying the rat people out of the cages and resetting the traps only for them to go right back in. We can only conclude they enjoyed the experience.
Tumblr media
The rat woman feels smug about being confined
And so the first year ends, with dwarves still grubbing in the mud to get by and little achieved beyond moving some rats around. And the brief and completely disproportionate vampire scare. This is our new definition of excitement I guess.

Walking Amy to school was becoming a regular occurrence. Several times a week Rhett would follow her there, but what he liked most was picking Amy up again. It usually allowed him to steal a few moments of Miss Miller's time, while Amy would play with the Hanson kids.
After a while the conversations gradually turned beyond pleasantries, slowly turning longer and deeper as he learned all about your life back in Laramie. Daughter of a university professor and granddaughter of a politician, you came from a wealthy family, born into the higher society. But your interest had always been books and you soon realised your passion for teaching.
But there had also always been a sense of adventure, wanting to experience more than just the comforts of the big city. Which is how you found yourself here now, in Wabang of all places. It was close enough for your parents to visit, but far enough away for you to get a life of your own. And you already had big dreams, hoping to open a library or bookstore in town one day.
Rhett listens intently as you speak about your love for books, about your favourite authors. He’s putting some of them to memory, hoping one day it’ll come in handy.
“I think that’s mighty impressive. I can barely read.” Rhett says, honestly impressed.
“Would you like me to teach you?”
Rhett looks into your eyes, already seeing the excitement hidden there, followed by that beautiful smile of yours. He didn’t care much if he can read or not, but if teaching him can make you smile like that? Well, that’s a no-brainer.
“Uh, sure. Not really sure if you can, though. I have a record of being a bad student.”
“I bet I could make you wanna learn.” You say, your voice innocent and sweet, but the words make Rhett think anything but innocent thoughts. He’s already certain that sweet voice of yours could make him do anything. Read a few pages? Sure.
He wouldn’t mind having you boss him around. He hates when his Pa tells him what to do, but you? He might just give you the whole world, if you asked.
“Well, if you’re gonna teach me how to read, is… Is there anything I can teach you?”
His voice drops low, his suggestive tone unmistakable. He knows he shouldn’t do this, but you bring it out in him. Oh, the things he could teach you. Something tells him you’re as pure as they get, never felt the touch of a man. He would gladly be the one to teach you about pleasure. Teach you how to use that pretty mouth of yours for other things than just reciting the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. He bets his name would sound exquisite coming from your lips followed by breathy moans.
Clearing his throat, he tries to compose himself, his cock already hardening at the thoughts in his mind. Shifting a little, he tries to hide it, before returning his gaze to you.
“Well… I do think you have something else entirely on your mind, Mr. Abbott,” you say softly, your cheeks turning pink under his gaze, “But I could use help with the woodpile at home. You see, I have no idea how to chop wood.”
“Not what I was thinking of, no.” he admits, licking his lips as they move into a smirk. “But I’ll gladly do whatever work you put before me.”
Unable to speak, maybe perplexed by the whole conversation, you give him a flustered smile. Knowing that he could make you feel this way, makes him proud. Makes him think there might be a chance of winning your heart one day.
“I’ll be there first thing in the morning,” he promises, before he gestures to leave. He really should get Amy home before supper. After a few feet, he turns with a grin, “School’s out on Saturdays, right? I never really went, so I don’t know.”
A small giggle escapes you, the sound making the dormant butterflies in his stomach flutter once more. Right there, he makes a promise to himself. If he’s ever lucky enough to have you as his, he’ll spend the rest of his life making you laugh.
“Yes, Mr. Abbott. School’s out on Saturdays.”
Looking down, you bite your lip softly, that soft rosy pink still on your cheeks. Swallowing hard, Rhett wonders if he’s ever seen anyone as innocent yet alluring as you? Had you been any other woman, he might not have been able to compose himself.
Before he does anything stupid, he bids you farewell and lead Amy home. She talks about her day, but Rhett doesn’t hear a word, his mind filled with your sweet smile and the prospect of a day in your company.
Tumblr media
Looking out into the yard behind your little farmhouse, you’re certain your mother would give you a slap over your hands and teach you a lesson on ladylike behaviour if she could see you right now. Fortunately, she wasn’t here to distract you from the sight that held you captive.
When you mentioned to Mr. Abbott yesterday you didn’t know how to chop firewood, you’d expected him to just teach you quickly, not take over. He was working through the entire pile and the sight was definitely an enjoyable one. Not that you’d ever admit it to anyone. You are a respectable lady. A schoolmistress, no less. You shouldn’t have had any thoughts about Mr. Abbott and how he looked chopping wood.
Standing at the window nearest the woodshed, lip bitten between your teeth and chin resting on your hand as you watch Rhett lift a large log onto his shoulders over to the stump designated for the chopping. He managed to make it look easy, like it didn’t faze him.
He had foregone many of his layers, hat placed on a stump beside him. His usual button-up is slung over the fence, leaving Rhett in his white union suit, indecently unbuttoned, showing off his collarbones and chest. The sleeves are rolled up to his elbows displaying his toned forearms, the muscles working with each swing of the axe. His suspenders dig deliciously into his shoulders and his chest captured fetchingly, the fabric of the undershirt clinging to his body.
Your mother would certainly give you an earful if she’d seen you. It’s unbecoming, not very ladylike and most certainly not decent to watch him with such impure thoughts. How he could easily lift you up over his shoulder. How nice it must feel to be pulled into his strong arms, your cheek against his warm chest. How big his hands look around the handle of the axe and what the muffled grunts are doing to you.
There is just something about the way his shoulders tense as he brings the axe over his head before bringing it down with hard strokes, cleaving the logs with ease. Something about the beads of sweat on his forehead that catches your eye, as you follow one down his nose to his lips.
Rhett Abbott certainly was a whole lot of man. He could capture your attention just by being near you. He was incredibly handsome, but what made him special was his nature. So kind and gentle, he always made sure to look out for others. A great uncle, a devoted son. Every act of service is a sign of his appreciation to his family, to his community.
You can’t stop yourself as your wonder what it would be like, being married to Rhett. To lie beside him on cold nights, those large palms sliding soothingly over your hips, your thighs, your… breasts. You flush at the thought, suddenly feeling warmer. Inhaling sharply, your mind wanders back to his hands wrapped around you, that deep soothing voice rumbling against your skin.
A breathy sigh leaves your lips at the thought, as you see Mr. Abbott cleave yet another log. Muscles working hard under the burning sun, his union suit slowly turning wetter. Clinging to that perfect chest. Shaking your head, you try to tear your eyes away, when suddenly you hear a loud grunt.
Mr. Abbott is cupping his right hand, blood running between the fingers. Quickly you run to him with a cloth, ushering him towards the house.
“Oh, dear, Mr. Abbott. What happened?”
“I just got clumsy, is all.”
He sits down at your small dining table while you find some water. Returning, you take his hand in yours, cleaning the blood away. It’s not very deep, but maybe you should still stitch him up.
“I think I should…” you stop, when you see the way, his eyes search yours. His face soft as he takes you in. Voice caught in your throat, you’re speechless as you stare into those deep blue eyes. Eyes you could easily look into forever.
“You think what, Miss Miller?” he asks softly, leaning in closer, his face now mere inches from yours. He is so close, you can feel his breath on your skin.
“I… I should” you try, but stop when Mr. Abbott comes even closer, his lips almost brushing against yours. Oh, how easy it would be to close the distance and press your lips against his. You feel a hand cup your face, his thumb rubbing circles into your soft cheek.
“Rhett?! You here?!”
His hand drops from your cheek immediately, pulling away from you just in time for his brother to show up at your open door. Taking his hat off, he greets you politely, before addressing Mr. Abbott.
“Pa needs you to come home. There’s a problem with the Tillersons again.”
Muttering curses, Mr. Abbott stands and walks out the door to find his discarded clothes near the woodpile, while his brother tells him about the trouble at home. You don’t listen, knowing it would be impolite, so you just wait patiently for them to finish. Now fully dressed again, much to your dismay, Mr. Abbott approaches you again as he closes the final button.
“I’m sorry, Miss Miller. I have to go. The Tillersons…. Well, it’s a story for another time.” He pauses, putting the bottom of his shirt down his pants. Before you can reign in your thoughts, you wonder what he might be hiding in those trousers.
“Miss Miller?”
Mr. Abbott’s deep, smooth voice pulls you out of yet another daydream. You find it harder and harder to focus around him, feeling things you’ve never felt before. Just these thoughts of late, have never happened before him. Knowing how flustered you may seem, you try to compose yourself, trying to act unaffected by him and his words.
“Yes?”
“I was just saying I’m sorry about the firewood. I can come back and finish another day.” he leans in closer, taking your hand in his, placing a soft kiss on your knuckles. “And I can’t wait for my first lesson.”
