Guess I was that ready to just let him leave the story.

Considering that none of the original series staff stayed in the writing team, they were too.

Since it's soon been a year and we're reaching the end of act 2, I can confidently say this is like, my favourite Pokémon series. Alongside Sun & Moon. And both are favs for wholely different reasons, as in, love Sun & Moon for tackling mature topics and for having wonderful humor, alongside good world building and nice focus on family theme. While Horizons I love the story focus shift from normal, cast that is super enjoyable and a take on a found family type of group, new original villains that I've come to like a lot, etc etc.

I love how different both shows are. I love how both dare to try new things out in different way. Liko is one of THE most relatable characters to me, and I love the whole entire cast to bits. I even adore the Explorers, esp. Sango is slowly making a hole in my heart that wants me to call myself a fan of hers. Yes. She's been that enjoyable to me. Even Amethio's grown on me immensely, I like how his character works, and excited to see his role this upcoming ep.

At the start Roy felt a tad bit too alike to Satoshi, and at times I can see that similar type of "forget about a skill and then do the skill" writing from Satoshi era is thrown on him, but he's still mostly his own character. But that is probably why I'm more drawn to the likes of Liko, Dot, Friede, Amethio and Sango, because their fighting styles are so refreshing for me. I even like how Onyx and Sango pairing works, with Onyx fitting Sango's oni-speaking pattern (srsly wtf that must have been intended and now I want to know if dub has ANYTHING to match this speaking pattern with.)

There's been clear growth, clear character progression, much much slower team progress than whatever the fuck JN did (not jabbing at anyone who likes JN but I won't deny that I really hate how fucking fast most Pokémon evolved there. It seems Horizons knows not to rush things).

Act 1 suffered from pacing issue where stuff happens in one episode and then the next ep sort of shrugs it off and continues the plot in a really weird tone-shift, but I don't think act 2 had that, which I liked. But act 2 also had more fill-ins compared to the action-packed act 1. But imo, it was good to have a more slower, calming pace for a while. It helped build on the characters more, and show how the Rising Volt Tacklers exactly live like. Which makes the Brave Asagi breaking in recent episode ever so more heartbreaking aaaaaaaaah-

I'm also kinda glad I was wrong on the "only a one year long series", because so far I'm quite attached to the cast and definitely wouldn't have felt happy to see them go yet. So knowing that Horizons seems to follow the usual 3 year pace (maybe 2, maybe 4, who knows) makes me happy. And I totally look forward to act 3 that is definitely caused by the Brave Asagi needing long, long time for repairs.

So um yeh. This was a weird ramble lol. But like, love Horizons, don't exactly miss old show as I felt it told whatever it wanted to and had the danger of just, butchering characters further from what I enjoyed it for. Sometimes it's better to let go. Fanfics and fanarts will still exists for a long long time, I'm sure. But my enjoyment on Horizons has definitely caused me to not miss the old days at all. And I'm glad.

(Do I want Satoshi to return? Honestly? No. 26 years is long enough for me.)

Thoughts after rewatching Episode 4

Okay, so I took a couple of days to get over the excruciating cringeworthyness of a few many moments in episode 4 and have just finished rewatching it.

And I have to say thank goodness for whatever it is in the human brain that allows us to adapt! lol No, but srsly, I found it a much easier watch the second time, and its definitely keeping up the trend of the first three episodes of being something I can enjoy more the second time than the first.

So, my now somewhat less instant reaction thoughts:

I hadn’t noticed that it’s Sylvie that initiates the hand holding on Lamentis 1.  And I think I prefer this.  One thing I can’t stand is romance in TV or film where it’s all about the guy winning over the girl, like she’s clearly not interested, but somehow by the end of the movie she’s in love.  Okay, that’s a bit harsh, sometimes it’s done well, but it’s a convention that gets my hackles up and gets me all defensive, so I think I was taking some of this into the episode with me.

Interestingly, now that I’m thinking of it, I think this moment and the moment Sylvie asks if Loki is okay while they’re being escorted by the guards are the only moments I can recall where she showed any form of affection for him. *shrugs* 

Poor boy also seems so surprised at this.  And uncertain how to respond.  And I can’t help but see this in relation to the scene in Thor 1 where the frost giant grabs his forearm...  :’(

I also think another part of the reason I so disliked the romance on my first watch is that it was just another example of Loki over-doing the emotion thing in comparison to his previous characterisation. He certainly looks more into it than Sylvie, and this just bugs me, because again I think the way Sylvie is acting here is what I would have expected from Loki based on the films.

In the time prison, while I still don’t like the getting kicked in the crotch gimmick, I do like that they showed us Loki attempting to get out of the situation in what seems quite a reasonable way.  He explains the situation to Sif and asks for her help to escape.  I thought it was quite interesting, because we see his first instinct is to use his skills of persuasion and try to escape. Firstly because it’s an instance where he’s trying to plot an escape, not just avoiding her or fighting her. I like that he seems to have some hope that this is possible and isn’t just 100% resigned to the TVA being all-powerful.  And secondly, he speaks to Sif as a person, he doesn’t just treat her like some sort of solid hologram and try and knock her out, or stand by the door to make a surprise attack.  It doesn’t work, of course, and we’re supposed to find that funny, but at least he tried in a plausible way onscreen. unlike IW  And he asks her to trust him.  Which I found interesting because if he’s asking this then he must think there’s some chance that she will, which means there’s at least some level of respect between them.  And I like that.  I know I’m reading way too much into this that the writers certainly didn’t intend, but let me play over here.

I still don’t like the narcissist line.  But I think I can buy Loki exaggerating in his confession to get her to stop.  He doesn’t seem to be really particularly bothered by what he’s saying.  But when she walks out and says he will always be alone, even after what he’s just said, that seems to have an impact on him.

I do love this image though. He looks so smol. So sweet.

When Mobius retrieves Loki from the time prison after the first time, I can see after a second watch that Mobius is actually a little angry/disappointed that Loki ran off after the variant in Roxxcart.  Its subtle well subtler than Loki’s reactions so I hadn’t noticed.

I still dislike the way they did the romance thing.  The interrogation scene where Loki’s all “eww no, I don’t like her!” and then has this realisation that perhaps he does.  I felt like I was being beaten around the head with it.  Like teenagers teasing someone for liking someone else. smh

I’m also reminded that the English language really isn’t very good when it comes to words for ‘liking’ someone. I mean the UK seems to have ‘to fancy’ which would be more accurate, but gotta say I’m glad they didn’t use that here.

I still hate that Loki seems utterly unable to keep a secret or hide his emotions. To me this was a fundamental part of his character, and yet here we have Mobius calling him out because he can’t help but have this pained expression on his face and can’t keep his voice steady.  Black Widow wouldn’t have had to spend more than a minute with this variant of Loki.

Mobius: “What are you doing?”

Loki: “Passing the time.”

This line made me laugh this time.  Sassy Loki!

I still like the slightly veiled way Mobius apologises to Loki for saying he’s only destined to be the villain to make other people better. Nice, not too over the top. Makes Loki smile.

That animatronic timekeeper stuff was just weird.  There better be some good payoff for this in the next two episodes.

And now to the bit I hated the most on my first watch – that super cringey interrupted confession of feelings.

Looking at this again with fresh eyes I wonder if Loki was about to explain Mobius’s theory that their moment on Lamentis 1 might be able to destroy the TVA.  It just got awkward because to explain that he’d have to explain how he feels.  And I think they exaggerated that to make the impact of the pruning bigger.  

First he says “then who created the TVA?”  Then he turns away and he seems to be looking around for inspiration, and I think he’s actually thinking about this.  It wasn’t just rhetorical. We can see the moment he realises something, and he doesn’t seem particularly happy about it, and then he turns back to Sylvie.

“Sylvie, I have to tell you something.”

“We will figure this out.” I think this is an aside after he’s taken in how upset she is about this. And it’s true that if they take down the TVA then they probably have to learn who’s in charge eventually. And then he gets back to his original point.

“Because… er… back on Lamentis…” I think here he’s trying to find a way to explain that their moment caused the nexus event, and a big one at that, but he’s struggling to do so in a way that doesn’t make him completely vulnerable by telling her how he feels. But it’s not possible to talk about it so clinically, so he hesitates, “This is new for me…”  he realises he doesn’t actually know quite how to put this.

Now, if I can rationalise it in this way as being an important piece of information he needed to tell her that would help them bring down the TVA then I can be more okay with this than if it was just a poorly timed romantic confession (which is certainly what it appeared to be on first watch). Again, I’m probably clutching at straws here, but it helps me not want to gag while watching this. lol

I mean I still think it’s just a cringey awful scene and it’s so very cliche to interrupt someone before they can say ‘I love you’. But this is a way I can rationalise his actions and I’ll stick with this till proven otherwise, presumably in the next episode. Ha!

I can’t help but give a nod to another beautiful example of Tom’s eyes matching his shirt in the mid-credits scene. <3

I also think that what I’m experiencing watching each episode the first time is much more from Loki’s point of view.  Like I’m more personally invested in him doing well, him not being embarrassed, him looking good to others.  And so since the story is actually giving him a hell of a time I’m experiencing a lot of negative feelings on his behalf.  And this is because it’s unfolding in real time in front of me and in that moment it could go anywhere! So it feels more real perhaps??  On a second watch I know what’s coming and I’m able to watch it with an eye for the storytelling as a whole, not just as the real events of Loki’s life.  I don’t think I’ve been this much of a fan of any character in recent times to have experienced this before.  So it’s a fascinating thing to learn about being a fan. *shrugs*

Anyway, in summary, much more bearable on second watch.  Some good stuff in there, and I can ignore a good amount of the stuff I didn’t like – at least until next week.

So again I’m sorta somewhere in between loving and hating this show.

So I have a charcater who really overshares, and is so proud about her family. But I’ve seen people say about info dumping and how bad it is. Even though it’s part of my charcaters main personality traits alongside with too trusting, sensitive, chatty, charismatic, overthinks but gets carried away when chatting and ends up blurting out her thoughts when comfortable, with a deep fear of failure and shame from childhood. Is it ok? Or would it come across OTT?

Ooh, this is a good question!

A lot of folks who have autism, ADHD, social anxiety (some shut down, while others never shut up) and other similar neurodivergencies, do this sort of thing. (I know, I'm one of 'em, lol.) Some people will definitely get annoyed by it, but other people genuinely enjoy infodumps...up to a point. There is a valid concern that it might get to be too much.

However...keep in mind that Laurell K. Hamilton wrote one of her Meredith Gentry books where it was literally just people in a room talking to each other. The whole time. For, like, 2 hours' worth of reading, they just talked. In a room.

I mean, srsly, if that's not an infodump, what is?? But she managed to pull it off, make it interesting enough that I kept reading, despite the lack of location change, the lack of action scenes, etc.

Anyway...

The trick is to intersperse other things. This can be actions, location changes, etc, but often includes commentary from other people--dialogue, not just diatribe, ideally--so on and so forth.

Additionally, is this the main character? A secondary character (close to the main character, interacts with them a lot), or a tertiary character (on the periphery of the story)? That can help you to tailor how much they "take over the story-telling" as it were.

How do the people around this character react to them? You mention that when she gets carried away and blurts out her thoughts when comfortable...do the other characters around her realize she is comfortable in their presence? Do they realize it's a sort of honor that she is this comfortable in their presence, even if the chattiness and thought-blurting may be A Bit Much?

(Keeping in mind that their reaction depends on their own interest in the subjects being discussed, their own reactions to what is being said, their own thoughts / feelings / reactions to her as a person overall, and of course their current mood, etc, naturally.)

What kind of story is it? Is this mostly an action-driven story? Or a character-driven story? In the latter, we writers can get away with a lot more dialogue & infodumping when that infodumping helps us not only to learn about a character, but to watch them grow and learn as the story progresses.

Chatty characters who are going through a period of learning, growth, attitude changes, etc, can be quite interesting and even compelling in those types of stories, because of this factor: The reader is being taken through these changes, too.

Now, if the character's growth and change isn't the focus of the story, that's perfectly fine, too! If they're a secondary character and their main role is to be the Infodumper™, that's completely legit. What you can do with these types of characters plot-wise is to have them occasionally bring up information that will be useful either right in that moment, or in just a little bit later, or have them re-bring-up that information much later, reminding the main characters of such-and-such plot point which will be something that "saves the day" in some way.

This can literally be done as a reminder of "but don't forget about this tidbit" OR it can be done like, "huh...I wonder if anyone ever realized that Count Rathbach is from Lithuania just like Sara Gilovich is... I know Lithuania is a pretty big country, but I wonder if they ever knew each other back home--it sure would explain a few things!" And BOOM! Your characters, who were chatting with Sara thinking she was friendly, suddenly realize who fed the Evil Count all the information needed to infiltrate the whatever-it-was and spoil their original plans.

We have a bad habit of assuming those that don't talk must therefore think deeply, and those that talk too much must therefore never think at all, or at least never think deeply. Feel free to break these stereotypes with your chatty thoughtful character. The movie Legally Blonde showcased a chatty vivacious character who was still incredibly smart.

This could be a feature of your chatty character, one that people don't realize right at the start is very smart. (This happens because we dismiss overly chatty people due to misogyny, toxic masculinity, patriarchy, & other toxic beliefs over who "gets" to be chatty versus who "should" be closed-mouthed / laconic.)

One last thing, if this character is the main character, or one of the main characters...definitely do what you can to show her thoughts versus her words. If she's going to feel comfortable among Certain People Only...perhaps she could think, I know some things you don't know, Mr. Count!! But I'm not gonna say a word otherwise to you! I don't trust you!

Also, what she says as a chatty person around Certain People can be a good clue as to who she considers trustworthy. People have been masking in terms of what information they share with which people for countless generations--to Count Rathbach, she might come across as A Chatty Shallow Ditz who only ever speaks about puppies and food and the county faire...but among the trusted central protagonists, she could actually be showcasing her brilliance at putting things together, like Sara maybe knowing the Count, 'cause it would just explain so very much...

There is nothing wrong with a chatty character, whether they're the main character, the infodumper, an important-connections-maker, the Reminder-er, et cetera. Just try to tailor how much they chatter to the situation and their role in the story--more for a main or major character, less for a side character, etc.

Above all, try not to have everyone disparaging her chattiness. Why? Because it is associated with many types of neurodivergencies and/or illnesses, such as anxiety, ADHD, etc. It's not always a case of those things, but it is associated with them.

What we read, we absorb, internalize, and reflect back out to the world. It's important not to villify neurodivergencies as well as physical divergencies--whether or not chattiness is stemming from these divergencies, it is often seen as some sort of "deficiency" and often shamed socially, like "--Can't you ever shut up?? What are you, (R word)??"

Remember the lesson of Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore. Eeyore is very obviously clinically depressed, yet his friends always offer to include him in various activities, even when he turns them down repeatedly. In the case of a perennially chatty character, show her friends and story companions accepting (or coming to accept) her chatty ways, and to appreciate her for her thoughts, insights, and willingness to share them with those she trusts--hell, have ‘em going to her deliberately to learn all the good gossip and/or get her thoughts on a specific subject matter!

By showing the other characters accepting and even appreciating her chattiness, this helps your readers absorb, internalise, and reflect back out into the world an appreciation and acceptance for that chattiness in others.

Out of all the OM! characters I feel like Satan is the most interested in foreign languages so if you need someone to help you with a new language, don't be afraid to ask for his assistance. He owns a lot of books that he'd love to translate into another language. Of course he could ask one of his brothers to help him out with those (since unlike him they've all been born as angels and it's most likely that they're able to speak any language naturally) but there's something very calming about teaching you and working on your own translated book together.

Mammon will test your patience permantly, but since you get along well with kids you may be able to get along with him as well. He can be a handful ngl but at the end of the day he just wants some genuine attention! It's similar with Asmodeus tbh, but that's no new news considering he's the avatar of lust and a very attention demanding individual.

Beelzebub doesn't share a lot of similarities with you, which doesn't stop you from hanging out with him of course. He's generally very accepting and easy to get along with.

Levi probably has a small crush on you, which doesn't come as a big surprise. Due to his tendency to stay inside his room all day long he rarely meets new people, let alone people that share his hobbies. He realizes that losing every game against him doesn’t have the best impact on your mood/patience as soon as the first controller went flying out of your hands in a fit of rage. There’ll be  a bit of an awkward silence between you two for a moment. He’s not mad or anything but then again wtf did you just do? Both of you probably just laugh it off after a moment but it kinda left a hint for him to start getting a bit more considerate about how he spends his time with you.

Belphegor is definitely surprised by how easily you can lose your temper over small things and usually finds it quite amusing when you get angry. Mostly because it's nothing compared to what his own anger can do, if he were to let it run free that is. Prob will laugh at you should you ever get angry at him. I'd gently sock him for that but that's up to you!

At first the person I wanted to ship you with was Lucifer, but the more I thought about it the more I felt like his pride would get in the way of a healthy relationship between you two. I don't think he'd treat his s/o too softly, at least not in front of other people. Once he gets close to someone in a romantic way he can get quite possessive which, combined with his general need to be in control, wouldn't help with any insecurities or negative experiences you had so far at all.

When I was reading through your matchup request I already thought "Wow, this girl really needs someone to appreciate her!" Someone who adores your clumsyness, enjoys the things you talk about and makes you feel good about your happyness. I mean, who'd be better than this than a literal angel?? Although it might take him a while to realize the severity of his feelings towards you, once he does he's not afraid to hold back his affections and let you know how important you are to him. He's very attentive and definitely notices even small things about you that others would look past . There's a good chance Luke also grows fond of you, since the smaller angel follows Simeon everywhere like a puppy. Don't treat him like child though, he'll get all pouty at and complain to Simeon who just sweatdrops at the whole scene. At the end of the day Luke does have a fond opinion about you though no matter how much you tease him.

Barbatos would definitely catch interest in this human/angel affair as well and given his power he might even play a bigger part in how well all of it turns out. It'd be wise to get on his good side.

Back to Simeon though. He’s a very balanced person. You wanna talk for hours about something? His attention is all yours. Don’t feel like talking today? No problem he’s got you covered with years & years of knowledge. Archeology/History? Simeon is your personal guide through ancient times, there’s so many stories he could tell you and he sure isn’t above using his powers to let you witness a piece of history. (Srsly why is no one talking about the angles/demons & what kinda powers they could/should have? Just imagine! Memory reliving/memory projection! That'd be such a intense way to bond with each other)

I feel like angels of the Obey Me! Universe don’t have a very close connection to the human world since the Great Celestial War happened (maybe they’re even forbidden to go there without strict orders) so Simeon is also genuinely interested in (and a bit clueless about) current human cultures/technology

star wars spoilers under the cut for my hot steaming rotting carcass of an oPiNiOn

Okay so it was... an okay movie. It moved too fast and tried to do too much and introduce too many brand new characters that could have been used better, but. The parts I liked, I LOVED. The parts I didn’t... well let’s just say that Star Wars will be Star Wars, and there’s nothing I can do about that other than cherry-pick what I like and leave the rest for the vultures.

The number one thing that bothers me is mostly just... It’s kind of been a calling card of Star Wars that

1. villains can never survive their arc, and

2. any villain with a redemption arc (whatever THAT is) has to die at the end of it regardless.

The exceptions being Big Bad Clones Of the Big Bad, which might survive their first arc but ultimately all die in the end, What A Twist. That’s just... how Star Wars does things. That and its penchant for insisting that physical deformity or disability somehow always implies an inclination towards evil, and that is just utter fucking bullshit and it needs to STOP. With that and the villain death thing - mostly the villain death - it’s been like that since the OT, since the EU, since the RPGs and the comics and the novels and the video games. There’s been like, maybe two or three exceptions to the rule, and most of those are in the video games and the RPGs and so are ultimately up to user choice, but mostly those choices are often not the “official” “canon” ones anyway.

and it really bothers me, and it always has. It’s the number one reason I write fanfic, to fix the bullshit like this that they keep putting in Star Wars. Just... honestly would it have KILLED THEM to forcibly haul Hux away kicking and screaming so he could Face Justice or some other rationalizing bullshit you KNOW Poe and/or Finn is totally capable of, only for Hux to be awkwardly hanging around the perimeter of all the Celebratory Festivities at the end? That would have been liquid GOLD.

And would it have KILLED THEM to have Force Healing, like, I dunno, NOT be some sort of zero sum bullshit? That’s not how it works! That’s not how any of this works! Both Rey AND REN should have survived! It’s drawing on the Force Itself, on the entire galaxy, not just your own personal life energy! *headdesk*

But I mean. I don’t want to focus only on the shit that bothered me. There’s lots I enjoyed.

THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP oh my god I love the Finn/Poe/Rey dynamic they are PRECIOUS I honestly could watch a nine hour movie of nothing but banter and shenanigans and couch cuddles and I’d be so motherfucking HAPPY. Bonus points if Rose and Hux and Ren can just. Join in. I need a peoplepile STAT

3. TINY NEW DROID BABY oh no it’s cute

4. Finn’s hair is so fucking hot, y’all. I just. *fans self* is it warm in here?

8. I really. really. enjoyed the atmosphere on Exegol. I am also an Edgelord DramaDarkerton and fuck if the vibes on that world didn’t give me shivers. I love it. I love everything about it. The foggy barren landscape, the giant stark monoliths, the depths of (not quite) abandoned temples and monuments, the jagged throne, the chanting hooded figures, even the flashing lightning that threatened to trigger a seizure BUT IT DIDN’T SO I WIN AHAHAHA *cough* so yeah I love all of that and I really wanted more more moremoremoremoreMORE GIMME *grabbyhands*

9. They didn’t do much but just the fact that the Knights of Ren were there made me happy. Kinda wished they’d been more like a Ride Or Die honor guard, so WELP I guess that’s what they are now in Sarc’s Canon and that’s the only canon that mAtTeRs lolololol

Anyway. It was a much better movie than The Last Jedi, imo, but there’s still a LOT that needs cherrypicking. So I’m just blithely going to say this is What Actually Happened, In The Star Wars According To Sarc:

Hux gets dragged along with Poe/Finn/Rey, whining and complaining the entire time, on a bum leg, because you KNOW Poe shot him in the leg anyway even if he planned on taking Hux with him. Because why not, right? the dickwad asked for it, after all.

Snap goes EV because he ejected at the last possible second and ends up shaken and battered but otherwise alright DO NOT TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME TOO

The Knights of Ren recognized Ren as their rightful leader and were properly Ride Or Die with him, a man needs his honor guard after all

Ren’s Force Healing does the trick but since it’s drawing on the power of the Force itself, and not some zero-sum personal life energy shenanigans, it doesn’t make him mysteriously keel over and Die For No Reason. He just passes out and Rey has to haul his heavy ass back to the ship by herself. He doesn’t hear the end of it for months.

Reunions are both full of celebration, relief, and grief for those who have fallen, and also full of lots of awkwardness and uncomfortable glances at some of our Intrepid Villains suddenly being thrust in with all the Good Guysᵗᵐ and trying to cope. But they make it out okay in the end. Our new group of Awkward Friends hold a vigil for Luke, Leia, and Han before leaving Ajan Kloss.

And the Millennium Falcon launches out with a crew of seven. Rey, Poe, Finn, Rose, Ben, Hux, and Chewie - not quite yet entirely comfortable with each other but learning that sometimes the unlikeliest of friendships can blossom even from within the most bitter of enemies.

The end ah yes that was a good movie glad I can ignore this weird thing called canon lalalala (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

Are they supportive? that’s. a hard one. she IS technically supportive but that’s only when she recognizes how much the thing means to the other person and she’s honestly rlly bad at reading these kinds of situations, so it’s rare that she actually does. she’ll kinda be like wtf but if she doesn’t recognize the other person is genuinely excited and invested in the thing she’ll do her best to give her own brand of awkward support

How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?difficult she’s a bit of a critical person. she’s also not the most tactful when it comes to emotional intelligence related situations so ppl will likely find out she does see those flaws in them if they stick around long enough

How do they feel about children? kids are? good? she likes kids. as for having them, she’s considered it some and she thinks she might like to. at the same time, she also thinks she’d make a terrible parent- too harsh, bad w comfort, easily stressed. in all reality, she’d be better than most ppl as one esp after gaining a bit of confidence

Spain Works a little bit like a federation… except not really. The different Spanish regions are called “Autonomous Communities” and are semi-self-governing territories that were established following cultural and historical reasons, almost 40 years ago.

This has brought some problems, but also a lot of hilarity, because the rivalry between some of the regions created a ton of funny jokes and stereotypes.

There are 17 Autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities.

So there’s no such thing as one and only, defined, version of Spain and Spanish people, rather Spain is a sum of all its differences. Like a real person, our country is polyfacetic, complex, and often contradictory in its behavior, preferences and personality. But at the core, there’s just something that we all have in common and that sets us apart.

I prepared a little, humorous piece on each region, highlighting its traits and most common stereotypes. Of course, this is oriented towards writers that want to make their character representation richer and more extensive.

You can use any of the following for Antonio and combine them at your like:

THE AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES 

Aragón: Legend has it, that not long ago the people from the aragonese Pyrenees still communicated with each other by yelling over the mountains. Whether that’s true or not, Aragón is considered the land of loud and headstrong people. And when I say headstrong I mean so stubborn that they will rather change the laws of physics than admit that they were wrong about something.

Their capital is Zaragoza and the cold is manufactured in its train&bus station. Seriously, its manufactured there and then exported to the rest of the world, I shit you not!

C. Valenciana: If orange trees disappeared from the face of the earth Valencia would cease to exist.

It’s the birth land of the paella and they won’t let you go until you’ve understood that. They are known for their corrupt politicians and have more metrosexuals for square meter than a gay gym. Speak catalan but call it “valenciano” and demand it to be treated like a completely different language. Collectively healthy and well-groomed. Valencian people are carefree, a little bit arrogant, and enjoy living the good life.

They also adore gunpowder; whether it’s a wedding or a funeral – there’s gonna be fireworks!

Asturias: “Spain is Asturias and the rest is reconquered land” and no Astur will ever let you forget that. They consider themselves the reason Spain exists in the first place and love reminding it to the rest of the country, whether it’s in the parliament or heavy metal songs.  They really love their land, carry an Asturian flag everywhere they go, take pride in their history, landscapes, nature and… milk.

Anyway, their superiority complex is legendary and the worst part is that you can’t even pick on them for that because it’s all mostly true.  

La Rioja: If you’ve got a wine mom, have ever been in the alcohol section of any supermarket, or studied the wine selection in a restaurant menu out of boredom, you probably know the word Rioja. It’s one of the most famous Designations of Origin in the world, which often leads to the assumption that Riojanos are drunk 90% of the time. Wrong. They are only drunk 70% of the time. They’ve also got a festival that is just like one giant water battle… but with wine instead.

Okay, jokes apart. Rioja has a lot more than just wine; its people will take you in with open arms no matter where you are from and make sure you never want to leave. 

Andalucía: What the rest of the world thinks is Spain. Every stereotype you can think of? Surprise! Turns out it’s only applicable to Andalucía. Flamenco, frilly dresses and women called Carmen come from there. Sadly, they are often treated like a joke by the rest of the country, but to give them credit: take it really well.

Although in the rest of Spain we are convinced that the religious devotion is actually an excuse for huge parties and let’s be fair – you’d also siesta if the temperature outside got to 50ºC in summer afternoons.  Andalusians are also everywhere; wherever you go you’ll find hordes of them and recognize them by their funny accent.

Galicia: Other countries have china-town. We have one giant Ireland-town and it takes up this entire region. Galicia is extremely beautiful, has a lot of forests and a very unique culture, not to mention a very sticky accent and their own language; which is so closely related to Portuguese it’s difficult to tell them apart.

Now, the Galicians are the human form of “to be or not to be”; or alternatively the object of Katy Perry’s “hot’n’cold” song. You won’t find more indecisive bunch on the face of the earth. They’ve also got collective “morriña” which nobody is really sure what it means but it’s sort of a good-melancholic feeling.

Cantabria: In Cantabria, one in every four habitants is a cow. Also, the last time something metal happened there, it was in the times of the Roman invasion.

They have the best anchovies and will not tolerate any offense against them. Apart from that, they are fine people that may be a little bit cold but talk in sing-song and work very hard and a lot. A little bit hard to crack maybe, or that might just have been my former housemate.

C. de Madrid: So… turns out there’s an entire Autonomous Community surrounding the capital. Although, to be fair, the city takes up most of it.

The Madrileños are always stressed out, always! They are always rushing everywhere like devil’s got their pants on fire and still get there too late. In an eternal competition with Barcelona about literally everything. They are also really prideful, but I’ve said that just about any region till now. Also, it’s the capital, they are supposed to believe themselves the shit xDDD

País Vasco/Euskadi: The special snowflake of Spain and the entire Europe now that we are at it. Actually rumored to be aliens. Their language doesn’t come from indo-european, their genetic code is different, there’s a hereditary disease similar to chronic insomnia that only affects Basques…  What even are these creatures?

It doesn’t matter; we still love their pinchos, and making jokes about their brute strength. Because believe me when I tell you: there’re no humans on earth as BRUTE as the Basques.  Yes, I also thought that was an exaggeration, until I started sharing an apartment with one.  

Navarra: Are they actually Basques? Are Basques actually Navarros? We might never know. The truth is that the Kingdom of Navarra was one of the cool territories during medieval Iberia and now they are famous for their Asparagus.

Okay that was mean. Navarra is actually a beautiful place (with fiscal privileges) full of history and people that might never win a subtlety and delicacy contest, but party like no-one else on the face of the earth!

Murcia: When Spanish kids are little and learning the Autonomous Communities they always forget one while counting on their fingers. That one is always Murcia. Nobody knows why it’s even a region on its own. Maybe it’s because of the language? Although make no mistake, they don’t have another language, they speak Castilian… probably, but nobody understands them anyway.

I know I’m being quite rough, but my former step-dad, the man that raised me, was originally from Murcia. They are admirably good at making jokes on their own expense. Let’s give them credit for that, at least.

Islas Baleares: *currently under the occupation of German tourists*

There’s not much to say about the Balearic Islands. As any overly-touristic place, they’ve lost a bit their essence, but some charm still remains. They are also paradisaically beautiful. I remember Formentera looking like a real-life movie poster with see-through water and marine animals swimming between your feet.

But if you really want to learn about Spain, our culture and people – don’t choose Mallorca for your vacation. I’m sure at this point the locals will thank you for that too.

Castilla-León: The buffer between the green north and the barren south. Those scholars that are trying to discredit the “Duero Desert” theory obviously never had to drive through the area itself for hours. It is still pretty much a desert full of wheat and olive trees. And the occasional city from time to time. 

Now, that region is old Spain, Valladolid used to be the capital before it got shifted to Madrid, as León was before that. If you want a lungful of history – just visit any town in that region, it’s bursting with it. Also they are supposed to have the most perfect, correct Spanish and its people love visitors.

Castilla-La Mancha: Even more wheat fields… wheat fields as far as the eye can see. Finally, after days of wheat fields you see a town on the top of a hill, it’s surrounded by a medieval wall and in its heart a castle stands tall and mighty. You climb the hill and enter the city. Everyone is carrying a sword.

You stand there thinking whether you are hallucinating from the heat or just time travelled. Until a fuckboy with a Vespa almost runs you over. Turns out that’s only their aesthetic™ and you haven’t left civilization at all. Enjoy your stay, it’s f*cking magical. (srsly tho: I really want to visit Toledo again)

Extremadura: I don’t know what’s in the water in Extremadura but its natives are always ready for battle. Seriously, almost all the famous (and universally despised) Spanish conquerors in history were from Extremadura.  They are direct, opinionated and blame Portugal’s entire existence for not having a beach.

I mean it, never cross an extremeño, but having one as a friend is probably the best investment you can make. They also work the earth a lot, remain unusually religious and have a weird obsession with making dick jokes about their own region’s name. Oh, and they also make ham!!

Islas Canarias: Their days last 23 hours, shipping companies ignore them, the magazines are more expensive, and you never know how to find them on a map. No, I mean they are pretty visible on a map of Spain, there down in a small square shape reserved only for them. But try to find them on a world map, I dare you…

Anyway, they officially have the best climate on earth, receive loads of tourism, and grow the famous “plátanos” ­– Spanish-branded bananas, and I’m pretty sure also that weird bunch-y shape on the top of Toño’s bangs – along with many other things. The highest mountain in Spain is there and it’s a volcano.

Cataluña: Saving the best for last. And if that sentence is not the epitome of Catalan character then I don’t know what is. Seriously, my dearest home region needs to chill and a lesson in humility, but we are not that bad. The bit about us being hard workers is relatively true, as well as the stingy bit. We’ve got 99 problems but a lack of imagination is not one of them, for better or worse.  Hipsters be here.

And finally; we like taking risks, as evidenced by our “castellers”: human towers as high as possible and on the top, 15m from the ground – a four year old kid with a bike helmet.

THE AUTONOMOUS CITIES

Ceuta and Melilla: Established like at VII B.C. by the Phoenicians, they passed through a lot of hands.

Melilla became Spanish in the latest stage of La Reconquista, in 1497. Since it used to be a Visigoth territory too, it was symbolically important for the Catholic Monarchs to take particularly that one city, and so they did. 

But the custody of Ceuta was won in the divorce from Portugal. When in 1640 Portugal decided that the Iberian Union sucked, Ceuta, a formerly Portuguese territory, demanded to stay with Spain. Aww, such a cutie!

So this is it! I hope you enjoyed this wild ride. Aren’t we just a lovely bunch? xDD Anyway, as I already said – you can combine and extrapolate from any of these to form your preferred version of Spain.  Just don’t forget that they are still only stereotypes! ;)

ok so. first some sci-fi! 

The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov -- basically one of my ultimate faves, i’ve read it like 15 times in three diferent languages lmao. idk why it’s stuck with me, but i somehow find new things with every re-read. i used to be a huge fan of the second part, but as i grew older the third part somehow became a new favourite. (it also contains one of my favourite quotes, which is apparently a quote from Schiller originally, "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.") basically it’s about the dying Earth and a parallel universe that seems to be extending a helping hand (such boring summary i’m sorry lmao).

Nemesis by Isaac Asimov -- a habitable planet is found, but something is not quite all it seems with the planet dun-dun-duuuunnn~

Nightfall by Asimov again lmao (see a trend here?) and Robert Silverberg -- it is set on a planet that has six suns and is always illuminated, and no one has ever seen a night. so what happens when they do? (i think it’s not only enjoyable to read, it’s also inspiring!)

basically i'd recommend Asimov’s stand-alone books, as it feels like he tends to lose focus with his long series? the series aren’t bad at all, either, but the stand-alones are excellent.

Solaris by Stanislaw Lem -- is really good too. Solaris is a planet that’s covered by an ocean that appears to have a mind of its own, impossible for the scientists to understand. attempts at communication end up just taking a toll on their sanity.

okay let’s abandon scifi and move to fantasy, i’ll keep this shorter i promise.

The Death Gate Cycle -series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman -- it's got seven parts, and i just recently re-read the entire series. i just love the characters in it, how they develop and grow, and form friendships. that's always what makes or breaks a book (or a movie) for me.

The Tales of Alvin Maker -series by Orson Scott Card -- it's partly alternate history, partly fantasy, and i'm so bummed that the series hasn't been finished LET ALONE BEEN TRANSLATED TO FINNISH GODDAMN, they haven't translated the latest book and i doubt they ever will. ANYHOW it's good.

i love fantasy as a genre in general, i’ve read so many good ones, but i’m trying to limit myself here lmao.

then the historical (more or less) novels

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas -- let me tell you i LOVE this book?? i’ve read it a dozen times, again in three different languages lmao, and it never ges old. most of my friends think it’s boring but i find it absolutely delightful.

The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas -- again, delightful. i love this novel.

The Etruscan by Mika Waltari -- i made a book report on this when i was 16 lmao, but i’ve re-read it since and it’s still one of my favourites. it mixes actual historical events with fiction.

actually I’d recommend ANYthING by Mika Waltari. sadly, not all of his works have been translated (the english-speaking world missing out on his crime novels is atrocious), but he is fabulous.

Ivory Carver trilogy by Sue Harrison -- the series focuses on prehistoric Aleut tribes and I think I've read it again like... six times? i'm currently reading Harrison's other trilogy (the Storyteller trilogy) and it's really good too, though I prefer the aforementioned one.

Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott is charming and one of my childhood favourites that i still revisit sometimes.

The Judge Dee mysteries by Robert van Gulik are sort of a breath of fresh air among the traditional murder mysteries? idek i enjoyed them a lot.
