If this was an uninhabited haunted house, Naru would never stay overnight until he confirmed it was safe. This time, however, there are people currently living here— Even an eight-year-old girl is living here, so I’m sure it’s not that dangerous. So, starting tonight, we’ll be staying overnight.

There were lace curtains, and the room was furnished with a closet, a dresser, a bed, and a small table set. ...Wow, it’s amazing. But I have no idea when I’ll get to sleep in this room. Her slightly puzzled eyes looked like those of a rabbit or something. It was really cute. “Hello~” When I smiled and waved my hand, she grinned happily. Then she picked up her doll that was sitting beside her picture book and came running over to us. It was the antique doll she was holding earlier. French dolls have somewhat scary faces, but this doll is rather pretty. Ayami-chan held out the doll’s right hand to me. “Hello.” I crouched down towards the doll. “How do you do. What’s your name?” “Minnie.” I shook the doll’s tiny hand. “Nice to meet you, Minnie-chan. I’m Mai.” “Nice to meet you, Mai-chan.” After making the doll nod, Ayami-chan smiled. So cute. “Ayami, were you reading a book?” When Noriko-san asked, Ayami-chan’s face stiffened for some reason. She suddenly went quiet and silently shook her head. “Ayami, let’s eat a snack.” For a moment, Ayami-chan was about to nod to Noriko-san’s words, but then she quickly shook her head again. Huuuh? What’s wrong, Ayami-chan? It’s a snack. A cute pink cake! Ayami-chan hung her head silently. ...Weird. I wonder what’s wrong with Ayami-chan all of a sudden…

That night, after dinner, Naru gathered everyone together. Kana-san, Noriko-san, and Ayami-chan. And the housekeeper Shibata-san. Naru-chan made them all sit on the sofa in the drawing room, then turned off the room’s lights. The room went completely dark. “I’d like your time for just a moment.” After he said this, he switched on the light sitting on the table. The white light brightened, then went out like a strobe light. “Please focus on the light.” The white light pulsed through the room. Naru spoke quietly. “Breathe in time with the light. Slowly… release the tension from your shoulders…” Naru’s attempting a light hypnotism on all of them. Actually, something like that can’t be called hypnotism. It’s suggestion. Everyone’s expression flickered in the white light. I could see it slip away with every blink. There’s a poltergeist happening in this house (probably). There are various causes of the phenomena generally lumped together under the word Poltergeist. It’s usually said to be the work of a ghost or demon. In reality, the one responsible for a poltergeist is often human. A person under extreme stress will do it unconsciously. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a trick or something. It’s just a supernatural power. In most cases, the person responsible is either a child in their early teens or a woman with strong spiritual sensitivity. In this case, there’s no one in their early teens. But the possibility still remains that it’s a woman with strong spiritual sensitivity. “Count your breaths to yourself…” Naru quietly repeated his instructions. Naru repeated his instructions for over five minutes, and when everyone was relaxed, he began to state the goal. “Tonight, a vase from the dining room will move… a small, glass vase. Tonight, it will be on top of the table in this room,” he said in a soft and quiet monotonous voice. If there was color in a voice, his would be completely transparent and colorless. “—Very good.” The room’s light abruptly came on. Everyone squinted from the brightness. “Please spend the rest of the day as you like. However, don’t do anything much different than usual. ...Morishita-san.” “Yes?” “May I have the key to this room?” Kana-san handed over the key. Naru, who took the key, was holding a vase in his arms. Everyone’s eyes focused on the vase. For just a moment. It was proof the suggestion was a success. People who fail to be influenced by the suggestion won’t look at the vase. Something like that apparently. Well then, I wonder whether the vase will move tonight. When a human is the culprit, the vase will move according to the suggestion. In other words, if the vase moves, it means someone currently living in the place is the person responsible. And if it doesn’t move… the culprit is something other than a human being.

After they all left looking mystified, I placed the vase in the center of the table and drew a line following its contour with chalk. Naru positioned the camera that would watch the vase. It was a high-sensitivity camera. That’s a camera that can film in dark places. Even under the starlight, it displays like it’s daytime. I connected a VCR to the camera. And after checking the machines, Naru and I went outside the room. In the hall outside, Lin-san was adjusting a complicated instrument. That’s the radar. You know, like what’s on an airplane. That’s that radar. Naru locked the room and sealed the door with paper. Now, no one can enter the drawing room, but if they do the paper will get torn, so we’ll know. It’s a completely sealed room. We’ll monitor the movement of the vase from outside the wall with the radar. If the vase moves even a little, the radar will confirm that and the video recorder inside the room will switch on automatically. ...Amazing, isn’t it? This is what’s called ghost hunting. It’s completely different from a psychic.

When we finished making preparations for the suggestion experiment and returned to the room we’d be using as an investigation room— Naru calls it the base, but I always end up calling it the research lab— Ayako and Bou-san were there chatting idly. “Seems like you have nothing to do,” Naru said sarcastically. Yeah, that’s right. Weren’t you going on and on about an Earth Spirit? Why don’t you hurry up and exorcise it? Bou-san said to Naru, “I will once I see the results of this experiment. I’ve decided to wait to make my move until after it’s confirmed the one responsible for the poltergeist isn't human.” ...Ooh. Bou-san’s wised up a little. Probably because he jumped the gun in the previous case and was humiliated. Yup, yup. It feels pretty good. After all, doesn’t this mean what Naru’s doing is being acknowledged? The time before, Naru’s investigation didn’t seem to have any meaning or value to them. Heheh. Perhaps Naru felt the same thing. “You flatter me,” he sneered sarcastically. Naru, come on, stop smiling like that. Your smile doesn’t reach your eyes. It’s an incredibly disturbing expression. Why can’t you smile more honestly?

It was that night when the first abnormal incident occurred. It was around nine o’clock when Kana-san burst into the research lab… er, base. “Come here!” Kana-san’s face was pale. She looked on the verge of panic. “What’s the matter?” Naru asked calmly. Kana-san grabbed his arm roughly. “Never mind that, come on!” We— four excluding Lin-san— exchanged glances and followed after Kana-san.

Con questo libro concludo le mie letture sugli animali come protagonisti. Non posso più sopportare l’ansia delle vicende in cui sono protagonisti gli animali. Andando avanti con gli anni sono diventata sempre più sensibile a quanto succede agli animali anche nella fiction e non riesco più a tollerare di essere in pensiero per la sorte di cani gatti e tutti gli altri animali che possono popolare una storia. Non so come un tempo sia riuscita a leggere Cujo…

Metto una stella perché come libro non mi ha trasmesso niente, anzi l’unica sensazione è stata proprio l’ansia per la sorte di questi poveri gatti. Per carità sono stati trattati benissimo non è successo loro niente di male e anzi devo fare un plauso a come questa scrittrice se ne è occupata. Mi è piaciuto anche come ha descritto la sua vita con i gatti ma non c’era bisogno che me lo dicesse lei perché è esattamente tutto quello che faccio io tutti i giorni vivendo con quattro gatti.

La storia parte dal fatto che trovano una gatta con dei gattini abbandonati ed ecco che subito mi cresce l’ansia ho paura che succede loro qualcosa il pensiero di questi gattini abbandonati che prendono freddo che rischiano… Mai più non voglio più leggere di queste storie. Già la realtà è crudele con gli animali e devo solo cercare di fare finta che non sia così dato che non posso salvare tutti quanti… Comunque gatta e gattini appena nati vengono salvati e per due mesi vivono a casa della scrittrice. Poi inizia una parte detestabile: devono dare in affidamento quattro gattini… sono in tutto cinque, uno rimane con la madre… ok vivere con sei gatti non è molto fattibile… Ma se nella realtà sarebbe molto difficile nella fiction tutto diventa possibile… Quindi ecco che mi viene lo sconforto da separazione non lo voglio provare io non ho mai trovato una cucciolata e avrei sofferto nel separarmi da qualcuno che ho curato e non mi va di viverlo in un libro… Voglio che invece si rimanga tutti insieme come nella carica dei 101! Perché è forse normale tenersi 101 dalmata? Assolutamente no però è così che deve andare nella fiction, leggendo un libro mi devo sentire meglio non peggio. Ed ecco che allora quattro vengono dati a persone che sono comunque persone e li trattano bene ma non mi piace il concetto di base…

Rimangono la madre e un cucciolo. dopo un po’ di tempo la madre che viveva fuori ogni tanto comincia a scappare e anche lì l’ansia mi assaliva, paura che si faceva male però poi per fortuna è tornata… ed è proprio per questo che io non leggerò mai più libri di animali e questo è stato l’ultimo.

Tra l’altro non l’ho trovato neanche interessante. Si parla di sterilizzazione preparare la cassetta dei gatti dargli da mangiare insomma non c’è niente di più di quello che faccio tutti i giorni infatti alla fine la scrittrice dice questo libro va bene per chi non ha i gatti… mah, di sicuro non va bene per me.

Mi sono anche un po’ preoccupata quando in una nota a pagina 14 c’è scritto che nella tradizione giapponese alcuni animali come volpi procioni e gatti sono considerati magici e si racconta che si possono trasformare in mostri o assumere le sembianze umane. Tutto ciò mi ha fatto anche preoccupare ulteriormente perché se tu per tradizione hai l’idea malsana che un gatto diventa un mostro… Come ti rapporti a lui? Sappiamo che nonostante la tecnologia le tradizioni sono ben piantate nella mente di molti… Quindi questo libro per esempio avrebbe potuto enfatizzare il fatto che sono tutte cazzate, non ci sono mostri negati! Allora mi preoccupo di dirlo io, non ci sono mostri nei gatti ma solo nelle persone! Chiaro?!

A pagina 49 c’è questo dialogo tra Kura e la scrittrice:

“Si racconta che ogni cucciolo di gatto abbia sei angeli“ disse Kura.

“Beh allora qui adesso c’è un assembramento di 30 angeli!” Risi io

Certo è tenero questo fatto che per ogni gatto ci sono sei angeli… ma il soprannaturale che si insinua così nelle discussioni mi fa preoccupare… la potenza delle credenze è sconcertante e fa spesso molti danni.

Stiamo parlando di gatti che non ne sanno niente di angeli e mostri e queste “favole” che si inventano intorno a loro non le trovo salutari. Dunque con questo libro posso concludere la mia letteratura animale che se un tempo era la mia preferita ora mi è diventata insopportabile ma solo perché amo gli animali. La parte più bella di questo libro sono state le foto dei gatti, un motivo in più Per cui avrei voluto leggere che se li aveva tenuti tutti quanti!
