Review: Arts in Motion's 'Shrek: The Musical' offers laughs, heart
Tumblr media
Fiona (Abby Vaughan) and Shrek (Andrew Fournier) get their groove on in Arts in Motion Theater Co.'s production of "Shrek: The Musical." (LISA DUFAULT PHOTO)
CONWAY — Arts in Motion Theater Co.’s production of “Shrek: The Musical,” which is being performed Thursday through Sunday for the next two weeks, except for Saturday, June 18, at the Loynd Auditorium at Kennett High School in North Conway, N.H., is a funny and joyous experience.
Based on the 2001 Dreamworks animated film, which itself was based on a children’s book by William Steig, the musical version adapts all the best scenes from the film while also further expanding the material. The score features a collection of tongue-in-cheek songs that are in tone with the film.
The musical’s book and lyrics are by David Lindsay-Abaire with music by Jeanine Tesori. Lindsay-Abaire, who won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007 for his play “Rabbit Hole,” adds nuance to the relationships between the ogre Shrek (Andrew Fournier), his travel companion Donkey (Will McCarthy) and Princess Fiona (Abbie Vaughan), who Shrek is tasked to rescue for the diminutive Lord Farquaad (Grayson Smith).
Shrek and Fiona inevitably fall in love. This was handled in a montage in the film, but the musical takes more time to establish a real connection between the two characters.

It is revealed in the opening scene that Shrek and Fiona were both abandoned by their parents at the age of 7; Shrek to a swamp and Fiona to a tower guarded by a dragon. The opening number “Big Bright Beautiful World" establishes the shared pain Shrek and Fiona have.
This is further explored in the song “I Think Got You Beat,” in which Shrek and Fiona argue over who had the worst childhood. The song starts with animosity and transitions into understanding before culminating into a farting and burping competition. Fournier and Vaughan beautifully portray the growing connection between Shrek and Fiona.
Shrek and Donkey’s relationship is also given extra shading. On the songs “Don’t Let Me Go” and “The Travel Song,” we are shown how Shrek reluctantly embraces his new best friend. As with Vaughan, Fournier has a natural chemistry with McCarthy.
Even Farquaad is given more background with the song "The Ballad of Farquaad," revealing his parentage in amusing fashion. Smith is hilariously deranged with an impish exuberance as Farquaad, especially on the songs “What's Up, Duloc?" and “The Ballad of Farquaad."

Fournier, despite having an inconsistent Scottish accent, makes Shrek likable, funny and easy to empathize with. While the script is full of big laughs, Fournier also captures the emotion of the character. Shrek hides away from society and puts up a gruff front because he is rejected upon sight. Fournier shows that pain on songs like “Who I'd Be," "When Words Fail," “Build a Wall” and “Beautiful Ain’t Always Pretty." This is all the more impressive since he’s acting through makeup and prosthetics.
Arts in Motion have double cast the roles of Fiona and Donkey. Vaughan and McCarthy are Fiona and Donkey for the first four performances, and Ava Frechette and Quinn Hagarty are Fiona and Donkey for the final four. In the performance I saw, Ava Frechette plays Gingy the Gingerbread Man, the Sugarplum Fairy and other parts and Hagarty plays Pinocchio and other roles. Vaughan and McCarthy will take on these roles when they switch.
Vaughan is tremendous as Fiona. She has a strong voice on songs like “Morning Person” and  brings a huge amount of personality across in both her singing and performance. She makes Fiona an energetic, effervescent goofball while also hinting at her underlying sorrow.
A highlight of the production is "I Know It's Today," which has adult Fiona joined by two younger versions of herself (Chloe Laine and Isabelle Frechette) as they sing about the wait for their fairy tale ending with decreasing optimism. It is well-staged by director Aimee Frechette and the three versions of Fiona work together perfectly.

McCarthy wisely doesn’t attempt to do an Eddie Murphy impression and manages to make Donkey his own. He gives Donkey a flamboyant flare and attitude. He has great energy on the aforementioned songs, as well as “Make a Move.” McCarthy also has impeccable comedic timing.
Hagarty’s Pinocchio is a scene stealer who leads two ensemble numbers featuring the fairy tale creatures who are banished to Shrek’s swamp (“The Goodbye Song" and “Freak Flag"). Ava Frechette similarly shines in her small roles. Gingy has one of the film’s most iconic scenes in the film, and Ava Frechette sells it for all its worth.
Other standout fairy-tale creatures include Nola Bradeen as Mama Bear, Cadence Pomerleau as the Mad Hatter, Seretta Spaulding as Peter Pan and David Spaulding as the Big Bad Wolf.
Another memorable set piece is “Forever," a musical number featuring Dragon (Zoe Daigle) and the skeletons of slain knights as her backup singers and dancers. Dragon is an impressive giant puppet. Each of these ensemble numbers are well choreographed by Aimee Frechette.

Music director Jennifer Bradeen has done good work with a large cast. The ensemble numbers sound tight and the principal actors all give quality vocal performances.
The set designed by Glenn Noble and Aimee Frechette includes several different elements that are moved in as necessary and effectively create the fairy-tale land.
Ashley Gore, Aimee Frechette and Ella Fecteau have put together some great looking costumes, and there’s also a strong lighting design from Kodi Barrows.
“Shrek” is a fun, dynamic production sure to be a crowd pleaser. Tickets are available at artsinmotiontheater.com.

gonna spoil some basic info shit under the cut cause i get cripplingly autistic over this gd cooling gel mattress creature and im a sucker for headcanons... might post more later when my brain isn't leaking out of my ears /aheemheem
mr grumpy was born the youngest of a litter of 7 on march 5th, 1960 at 1:33AM. the rest of his siblings are cringe OCs minus his eldest sibling, mr grumble, who was born March 4th, 1960 at 10:17PM/22:17.
he was born in a rural territory in north conway, new hampshire to a french canadian father and a chilean mother.
he's technically trilingual but finds his chilean and french canadian sides "humiliating", as his first language is english.
he is autistic and wasn't properly diagnosed until he had already earned geezer status (this is a hill i am willing to die on, there's canon "proof", at least in the 2008 show)

Road trip Hangman x reader
Tumblr media
You and your boyfriend Jake were going on a road trip up the east coast. It's so much fun so far!  You guys just got out of Florida and entered Georgia. He is driving right now while you got tasked with looking for places to eat.  He often loves driving, it's a leisure activity to him, just you, the music, and the road, rather than being vigorously pulled down by Gs.
"Oh, babe I found a place we can eat at. And it's a cool museum too." You say looking at your phone.
"What is it, sweetheart ?"He asks.
"World of Coca-Cola. I figured that would be something fun to do and to get a bite to eat. Sound good?" You ask.
"Sounds awesome," he says.
You then play some new music from an artist you like. Jake claims he hates the diva's music, but you know deep down inside he is hiding his love for the smooth beat and sassy melody.  After a few songs of him, eye rolling or just looking at the road. He finally gets carried away by one of the more upbeat songs on the album and starts to sing along. You then smile and turn the music down so he can have his solo moment. He doesn't give in tho. The moment the music turns down he stops singing.
"Ugh, you jerk!" You say to him.
"Ok I'll admit some of her music is good but most of it isn't like this is the  only good song," Jake says defensively.
"Oh ok, babe." You say.
"What I'm serious!"
" And I said ok." You defend.
Further down the road, you guys go to "World of Coca-Cola". You both have so much fun and are happy when food is in your stomach. After getting a few pictures and walking through the museum he has you stand outside the gift shop after you do some shopping so that way he can get you a gift.
You get to the car and he smiles. "What?" You ask.
"Oh, nothin princess." He says.
"Haven't I already told you this Jakey? I'm not a princess I'm a queen." You say then climb over to his lap wrap your arms around his neck then kiss his lips .
" Now what does that make me babe?"
" The hot solider I picked up at a bar." You wink. Then go back to your seat.
That puts some tension in the air, next thing ya know his lips are smashing against yours. He tastes like the fancy cola you guys shared.  And smells like his normal masculine cologne. You guys then break for air and move on your journey to the next state.
By the end of the trip and ride back home to Texas you pull into the driveway and start getting a few things from the car. While doing so you guys talk about your favorite places you went on the trip.
" I don't know babe there were so many good places!" He says trying to answer your question.
" Actually I enjoyed New Jersey the best, that was a super cool boardwalk we went to!" He says with a smile.
"I thought that was gonna be your favorite." You say. This was because he always loved the beach he probably enjoyed that ice cream you guys had looking over the water.
" Oh yeah?" He says.
" Yeah," you smile closing the trunk.
"What was your favorite?" He asks.
" oh, that's so hard."
"See..." He interjects.
"Ok ok probably, North Conway New Hampshire it was cool like a tiny village."
" Yea it was cute kinda like you." He smiles.  He then pulls you in for a hug.
You then rise on your tip toes and whisper into his ear. " Take a picture it will last longer." You giggle.
" Wow and I thought I was the cocky one." He smiles. " Hey let me give you your gifts now," Jake says walking to a few bags. He takes them and gives them to you one by one. First, you take the bag he got from the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. You pull out a set of Mickey earnings that match your birthstone.
" Awwwww Jake these are so cool I like them a lot."  You say
" Open the others!" He rushes.
You then open the bag from the coke store to see a little polar bear stuffy holing a plush Coca-Cola bote.
" Omg, this is so cool thanks babe!" You say hugging the unique teddy."
He then shows you the new pair of sunglasses he got you that match his aviators. You thank him for the gifts he got you and he said thanks again for the ones you got him. You let him see them on the way home because you drove for a bit and he was impatient. And he loved them equally. After that, you guys both called it an early night after eating dinner and talking about how you guys would like to go to some of those states again.
Hope you guys enjoy it thanks to minilpark for helping me with nicknames!

re: new hampshire donut sign: it's not as bleak as it seems. there is a little bit of context missing in the story. billboards are illegal in maine and new hampshire because the people who live there hate the city and don't want maine and new hampshire to look like one. it's a very strongly held opinion in the area that billboards are tacky and make the road look like ass.
meanwhile, the area the sign was painted in, conway, is turning into a circus. when i was in my early twenties, that was where the cool kids from lakes region (southern maine) would go to hang. like, the city itself is turning into some sort of amalgamation of aspen and a mall; you've got the ski resorts, the high end shopping district (gucci, prada, disney store, nike, all of it), etc etc etc
so, yeah, it sounds bad they way they've worded it, and yeah, i'm inclined to say "come on, guys. it's just a mural." but it just so happens that north conway is actually at a crossroads right now and allowing a mural like that would unfortunately allow companies like nike and prada, who are already in the area, to get a foothold in and say "look i know you said no billboards or huge advertisements, BUT. you allowed that one. so." so it's really, unfortunately, more about keeping shitty corporations from taking advantage of a small town because obviously, everyone knows they will.
I didn't really have much of a opinion on that one one way or the other, other than it feeling like the kind of nonsense you get from a HOA when your mailbox is the wrong colour.
There's ways around a lot of those regulations too, surprised nobody has gone and tried to rename the painting and call it a 'community art display' and then every 6-12 months have a community competition to determine what the new display is, keep it something local and current.
May or may not work, but there's always a way around these things using clever wording or something.
I hope they can save the piece even if it can't stay on display, people worked hard on it and it's a shame to see that get destroyed because of petty bureaucracy.
