Qotd: what have you worked hardest for? . AOTD: for me, it was being a mother. Took years and a lot of pain and loss to finally have my rainbow babies. . In 1900 Sardinia, a young woman’s remarkable talent with a needle earns her a position as a seamstress with a wealthy family. Inside this privileged world far different from her own humble beginnings, the skilled sewer quietly takes measurements, sketches designs, mends hems—and in the silence, hears whispered secrets and stories of all those around her. Through the watchful young seamstress’s eyes, this small Italian city and its residents emerge in all their vitality, vanity, and fragility—flawed yet congenial people who are not quite what they pretend to be. "This feminist fairy tale is sure to be a book-club favorite and will appeal to fans of Laura Esquivel, Adriana Trigiani, and Elena Ferrante." — Booklist . Written in what I like to think of as narrative stream of consciousness, #theseamstressofsardinia is a stark but beautiful story of female strength. . #oliveinfluencer thanks @harperperennial for my copy! #bookstagram #italy #bookreview #booklover #booklovers #instabook #bookrecommendations #booknerd #bookworm #bookwormlife #bookphotography #bookpics #bookish #bookaddict #bibliophile #booklife #novel #bookaddict #booklove #bookstagrammer #prettybooks #instabookstagram #booksaremylife #harperperennial #booksbooksbooks #bookaholic #bookgram #bookphoto #bookclub (at Columbus, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnkkBeUvcDn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Twist of a Knife is a masterfully crafted, vintage-style whodunit that never fails to deliver the unexpected. This captivating novel consistently offers delightful entertainment, skillfully blending Horowitz's own theatrical expertise to infuse the story with a perfect balance of bittersweet intrigue.

The Rosewood Hunt, Mackenzie Reed (10/31)
It feels like we've gotten to see a lot of stories that involve a death & a huge fortune, made kinda popular from Knives Out & The Inheritance Games trilogy. I've been loving this genre (sub genre?) for a long time - it started with the Professor Layton games on Nintendo DS! So of course I'm a sucker and want to read anything that falls in this category
Not to mention, a new Professor Layton game recently got announced for the Switch 👀
Despite being about death & a massive fortune, the author stated that this book focuses more on "friendships that bloom during an unexpected journey," and there's definitely more emphasis on those friendships than anything else.
The mystery itself feels pretty simple, and if you read enough books like this you'll likely guess the "twist" early on. The hunt really served to bring people together more than anything else.
I'm left wanting a more complex hunt, but I like what I read. This was an easy read, even if it wasn't particularly twisty, but I would be interested in seeing what the author writes next.
Until then, I'll be dreaming about Professor Layton & the New World of Steam!
[Thank you @netgalley for the #gifted e-arc]
Would you ever join a hunt to inherit a family legacy?

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to share another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Rainesford Stauffer’s essay collection An Ordinary Age discusses themes such as work culture, dating and what it means to belong, all of which influence how the digital generation contemplate and plan their lives.
The book places a variety of voices that represent the digital generation at the center of the conversation, as Stauffer examines the age group that has determined the outward appearance of success based upon limited, and frequently unrealistic expectations. The required internships that result in an ideal job, network of friends, and photographs on social media accounts are evidence of a life well lived. The reality is that the world is insisting upon more from the digital generation than ever before, and feelings of isolation and thoughts of failure are all too common. The digital generation is not being given the space and time to ask the larger questions as to who they want to be and what makes their lives feel meaningful.
What I appreciated most about this book was the reminder to be more mindful of the moments in time that are often overlooked, seeking out and supporting genuine human beings, practicing self-care, and owning one’s place in the world regardless of things such as job titles and filters on photographs.

Do you like epistolary novels? I love them! There’s always something special and intimate about reading a story told in letters, texts, emails, etc. I feel like you get to know the characters really fast. When You Read This by @adkinsmary is a romantic comedy-drama and the synopsis sounds really interesting! It was released in 2019 but this new paperback came out recently and it’s such a pretty cover!⠀ .⠀ Big thank you @harperperennial for providing me with a copy!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #whenyoureadthis #oliveinfluencer #bookstagram #newbook #romanticcomedy #romcom #romance #romancebooks #contemporaryfiction #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bookish #bookcommunity #tbr #amreading #readings #books #booknerd #bookblogger#beautybookcorner https://www.instagram.com/p/B9knbIpAjOE/?igshid=1wh82my73nwis

QOTD: What's the paranormal subgenre you just love? . AOTD: I can't get enough of witches. . From the author of A Taste of Sage comes another charming and engrossing novel in which a young woman must navigate her family’s expectations, the demands of her job, a new love, and a secret about her magical identity. Larimar Cintrón works hard at three things: her job as brand manager for Beacon Café, a New York based corporate bakery chain; taking care of her parents and her abuela; and hiding that she’s a ciguapa—a mythical creature of Dominican folklore with long, straight hair and backward feet. Larimar may be a ciguapa only during full moons, but she feels like an outsider in her family the rest of the month too. Her love of ’90s punk rock music and style further sets her apart. But when her best friend introduces her to Ray, a bakery owner and fellow punk rock lover, Larimar thinks she may have finally found someone with whom she can be her true self. As Beacon Café's brand manager, Larimar oversees all new location openings, including its newest in New Jersey, which could be the project that finally lands her a coveted promotion. But when she discovers the location is right across from Ray’s bakery, Larimar is torn between impressing her boss and saving Ray’s business. As she continues to grow closer to Ray, and as the new store’s opening looms, she struggles to hide the truth about herself and her job. But embracing her magical nature may be the only way Larimar can have everything she wants. . #booksofinstagram #readingtime #amreading #bdloves #folklore #coolgirlsread #reading #books #booklover #betterwithbooks #booksconnectus #readholic #booksparks #booksonbooks #mybookfeatures #shelfiesunday #tbrpile #bookaholic #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookobsessed #ilovereading #nakedbooks #bookwormlife #booksandbeans #toberead #oliveinfluencer #unitedbookstagram #booksandbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks (at Columbus, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpfxY3crnZl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

QOTD: Has life ever forced you to make a quick decision? How did it turn out? . I binge read book 1 of this series and am halfway through book 2. I plan to dive into book 3 as soon as I can. I love hearing the different points of view, hearing from voices outside of my own, but also feeling the combined experience of growing and being a woman. So glad to feature @jayneallen in my Women's Voices's tribute for Women's History month. Got any ladies you think I should check out or you would like to see featured? Drop them in the comments. . In this final installment in the acclaimed Black Girls Must Die Exhausted trilogy, Tabitha is juggling work, relationships, and a newborn baby—but will she find the happy ending she’s always wanted After a whirlwind year, Tabitha Walker’s carefully organized plan to achieve the life she wanted—perfect job, dream husband, and stylish home—has gone off the rails. Her checklist now consists of diapers changed (infinite), showers taken (zero), tears cried (buckets), and hours of sleep (what’s that). QOTD: Have you ever read a book that defied genre? what book was that. . Can I just tell you how much I am enjoying Ms. Demeanor??? I don't know if its the fact that I'm a lawyer or the absolutely iconic set up for this story, but so far it's giving me everything. Entering as hell. . From one of America's most beloved contemporary novelists, a delicious and witty story about love under house arrest Jane Morgan is a valued member of her law firm--or was, until a prudish neighbor, binoculars poised, observes her having sex on the roof of her NYC apartment building. Police are summoned, and a punishing judge sentences her to six months of home confinement. With Jane now jobless and rootless, trapped at home, life looks bleak. Yes, her twin sister provides support and advice, but mostly of the unwelcome kind. When a doorman lets slip that Jane isn't the only resident wearing an ankle monitor, she strikes up a friendship with fellow white-collar felon Perry Salisbury. As she tries to adapt to life within her apartment walls, she discovers she hasn't heard the end of that tattletale neighbor--whose past isn't as decorous as her 9-1-1 snitching would suggest. Why are police knocking on Jane's door again? Can her house arrest have a silver lining? Can two wrongs make a right? . #bookishaesthetic #booksarelove #bookpicture #cozyreads #bookbuying #readingtime #epicreads #readingisfundamental #readmore #bookhoarder #bookstagrammers #booksarelife #bookishlove #bookstack #becauseofreading #booklover #bookstagram #unitedbookstagram #booksandbooks #booksofinsta #toberead #booksaremylife #bookslovers #booksy #lawyersofinstagram #ilovereading #booksofinstagram #booknerdigans #nakedbooks #oliveinfluencer (at Columbus, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpOvayNrsJ-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello again, everyone! I’m thrilled to share yet another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Co-authors and partners Joseph Fink and Meg Bashwiner’s memoir The First Ten Years reflects upon their first ten years as a couple, each narrating their perspective without having discussed it with the other.
The year was 2009, and Fink had recently moved to New York City, where he was working odd jobs to pay rent and volunteering for a theatre company in the East Village just to receive free tickets to their shows. Quite the opposite, Bashwiner was living with her parents in New Jersey, working a predictable desk job, and commuting to an internship at the same East Village theatre company. The twenty-two year olds crossed paths while selling tickets in the small box office. Readers will learn about everything from their first kiss to their hopes for the future, as well as their experiences with fame, touring, mental illness, and death in the family.
What I appreciated most about this book was the comical, realistic, and distinct perspectives of two different human beings navigating their way to adulthood while learning what it means to be in a relationship.

Hello, everyone! The month of March is well underway, and I’m delighted to share another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Co-written with The New Yorker’s Ariel Levy, actress Demi Moore published the memoir Inside Out that details the challenging relationship she had with her mother, Ginny, three marriages, a successful career in film, raising a dynamic family, and the continual practice of communicating with an open heart.      While becoming a well-known actress in Hollywood, Moore was also attempting to transcend her unsettling past—addiction, body image issues, and family trauma—for many years. The prologue of the memoir poses the personal yet relatable question: How did I get here? She also questioned whether or not she belonged in the limelight, if she had the qualities of a good mother and actress, and if she was simply good enough at all. Of course, professional and personal struggles always lead to a variety of epiphanies. The epilogue asserts that she learned to surrender and own her story, with the awareness that all human beings struggle, triumph, and choose how we hold or release the experience of fully being in the world.      What I appreciated most about this book was being reminded about the importance of not only owning our stories, but that we really are interconnected.

Hello, everyone. I’m ending the eleventh day of February with another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Creator of the well-known webcomic Barely Functional Adult, Meichi Ng recently published a collection of illustrated short stories that details the best and worst moments in her adult life—underlay with the happiness, fear, love, and loss that comes with experience—with topics such as imposter syndrome, first loves, letting go of exes, friendship, therapy, aging, family, and trying to find her true purpose in life.      Ng’s vulnerable depictions about feeling isolated in this world, as well as her eventual epiphany that we are all connected, is familiar and necessary in the best ways. The book features the search for an emotionally independent aquatic pet, a prolonged attachment to gum, and a visit to Lam Tsuen, a seven-hundred-year-old village in Tai Po, Hong Kong, to see a banyan wishing tree, and so much more.      What I appreciated most about this book was learning more about how to differentiate between what we think we should be doing, and what we want to be doing with our lives.

Hello, everyone. I’m honored to start off the new year with another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Artist and author of Goodbye, Again (coming March 2021), Jonny Sun has written a collection of personal essays, short stories, and observations— interspersed with his distinctive illustrations—exploring topics such as mental health, happiness, and a sense of belonging.
Sun’s sincere writing about his difficulties with feeling like a productive human being, as well as his frequent struggles with depression and anxiety, are relatable and a source of encouragement for anyone and everyone intending to create in a turbulent world. The book features a multitude of beautiful moments including variations of a recipe for scrambled eggs, a connection with German Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer by way of pillows, and the feeling of hope that grows after purchasing a peperomia plant, and so much more.
What I appreciated most about this book was not only learning more about the connection between experience and personal growth, but the timely reminder that change is inevitable.

Hello, everyone! I’m returning to social media to share another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Pop culture journalist and author of American Cheese: An Indulgent Odyssey Through the Artisan Cheese World, Joe Berkowitz knew very little about cheese, other than that he usually indulged in too much pepper jack. After participating in an artisanal tasting at an upscale cheese shop in New York, he had an appetite for more.
It was that moment that served as his first glimpse into Dairy Narnia—a subculture of elite cheesemakers, competitive sellers, cave-dwelling affineurs, dairy scientists, and mixologists. Unbeknownst to many, this lively cheese scene had been active in the United States of America too, the country known around the world for producing generic yellow singles. Inspired, he set forth on the food adventure of a lifetime, and spent one year exploring the artisan cheese world.
His advancement from amateur to connoisseur parallels that of American cheese on the world stage. He followed along with Team USA at an international cheesemonger competition, made cheeses in experimental vats at the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, viewed the Cheeselandia exhibit at the 2019 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, met a maker who was ready to represent the United States of America at the World Cheese Awards, and so much more. An unexpected culture of passionate cheesemakers was discovered, along with the extraordinary impact of the delicious dairy product.
What I appreciated most about this book was not only learning more about cheese, but that culture exists in many forms. Maybe it is time to carpe caseus (seize the cheese)!

The summer solstice is well underway, and the days are oddly similar. However, I do feel especially grateful to share another post about a book sent to me by Harper Perennial (@harperperennial). Nearly a decade after the publication of How to Be a Woman, Caitlin Moran’s follow-up book More Than a Woman (coming September 2020) is an updated manifesto for change that continues to address critical issues such as feminism, marriage, motherhood, friendship, aging, and everyday life.
Since the publication of How to Be a Woman, women everywhere are speaking up about the importance of gender equality by way of voting, upholding political offices, and facilitating large and small businesses. More women are openly discussing their reproductive rights, sexuality, making art, earning money, and have an education. The progress is encouraging yet limited, as women around the world are still encountering oppression and discrimination on a daily basis.
What I appreciated most about this book was the personal perspective of a middle-aged modern woman, which was often direct, honest, comical, and necessary as a way of encouraging change.
